Abstract:AbstractEfficient host–guest complexation and interesting self‐assembled structures formed between two crown ether‐based cryptands and a 1,2‐bis(4‐pyridinium)ethane derivative 3 are reported. By self‐assembly of cis‐dibenzo‐24‐crown‐8‐based cryptand 1 and guest 3, a [3]pseudorotaxane was formed in solution, which further formed a supramolecular poly[3]pseudorotaxane structure in the solid state driven by π‐π stacking interactions. Meanwhile, a [2]pseudorotaxane, obtained from self‐assembly of a bis(m‐phenylene)‐32‐crown‐10‐based cryptand 2 and guest 3, can form a supramolecular poly[2]pseudorotaxane structure in the solid state. This difference in the binding model reflects the diversity of host–guest chemistry of crown ether‐based cryptands. Furthermore, these host–guest recognition processes and self‐assembled structures were fully characterized by 1H NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single‐crystal X‐ray analysis. Interestingly, formation of the [3]pseudorotaxane between cryptand 1 and guest 3 can be reversibly controlled by adding and removing potassium cations in acetone. This reversible complexation process provides a simple on/off mechanism that can be used in the construction of controllable molecular switches.

Abstract:The first cryptand/monopyridinium [2]pseudorotaxanes were prepared from five bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10- and one bis(m-phenylene)-26-crown-8-based cryptand hosts and three monopyridinium guests. These pseudorotaxanes were studied by proton NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. Association constants ranged from 141M−1 to 1.86×104M−1 in 1:1 acetone: chloroform at 22°C.

Abstract:Bis-p-phenylene-34-crown-10 derivatives 1 and 2, bearing one and two dibenzo[24]crown-8 units, respectively, and 4,4′-dipyridinium derivatives of 3·3PF6 and of 4·4PF6, bearing one and two ammonium groups, respectively, have been synthesized from readily available starting materials. 1H NMR and UV–vis studies reveal that in polar acetonitrile 1 binds 3·3PF6 to produce pseudo[2]rotaxane 1·3·3PF6 by making use of one donor–acceptor and one electrostatic interaction, whereas 2 binds 4·4PF6 to form pseudo[2]rotaxane 2·4·4PF6 through one donor–acceptor and two electrostatic interactions. The association constants of the two pseudorotaxanes have been determined by the UV–vis titration method to be 9.1 (±1.0)×103M−1 and 6.5 (±0.7)×105M−1, respectively. The high stability of the new pseudo[2]rotaxanes has been ascribed to the cooperative interaction of the two different non-covalent forces.

Abstract:Host-guest complexation between two crown ether-based cryptands and two vinylogous viologens has been studied. Formation of [2]pseudorotaxanes from a dibenzo-24-crown-8-based cryptand and these vinylogous viologens can be reversibly controlled by adding and removing potassium cation in acetone. Furthermore, the complexation between a bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptand and a vinylogous viologen exhibits a high association constant, 1.18 × 10(6) M(-1) in acetone, and leads to the formation of a supramolecular poly[2]pseudorotaxane in the solid state.

Abstract:A new cryptand, bis(1,3,5-phenylene)tri(1,4,7,10-tetraoxadecyl) (3a), has been synthesized in good yield from bis(5-hydroxy-1,3-phenylene)-26-crown-8 (2a) and tri(ethylene glycol) ditosylate using pseudo-high dilution conditions. 3a forms a strong 1:1 complex with paraquat (1) in acetone solution with a high apparent association constant, 1.4 x 10(4) M(-)(1). A stoichiometry of 1:1 was also observed by mass spectrometry in the gaseous state. However, in the solid state, as determined by X-ray crystallography, the two complexes of 3a and the previously reported homologous cryptand, bis(1,3,5-phenylene)tri(1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxatridecyl) (3b), with paraquat (1) have 2:1 stoichiometry. A unique feature of these trimolecular pseudorotaxane-like complexes is that the guest occupies parts of the cavities of two cryptand molecules. For the first time it was found that in cryptand-based complexes, different stoichiometries are possible for the same host-guest pair.

Abstract:A pseudocryptand-type [2]pseudorotaxane was formed via the self-assembly of a dipyridyl bis(meta-phenylene)-32-crown-10 (BMP32C10) derivative and a paraquat derivative. Due to the basicity of the pyridyl group, which forms the third pseudo-bridge of the pseudocryptand, this pseudorotaxane possesses two finite acid–base adjustable association constants.

Abstract:By condensation reactions of pillar[5]arene derivatives and alkylenediamines with different lengths of alkyl chains, self-locked dipillar[5]arene-based pseudo[1] rotaxanes and bispseudo[1]-rotaxanes were obtained, which were characterized via 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and X-ray analyses. It was found that the lengths of alkyl chains of alkylenediamines played crucial roles in forming these self-lockedmolecules.

Abstract:A series of poly(hydroquinone ether)s containing propanetriol units were prepared from hydroquinone and epoxy chloropropane in good yields. The oligomers can self-assemble into a novel pseudorotaxane with π-electron-deficient bipyridinium cyclophane(CPQT) via π-π stacking interaction and weak interaction. The partial temperature-dependent 1H NMR spectra of pseudorotaxane between poly(hydroquinone ether) and CPQT showed that the chemical shift changes of different aromatic rings in the 1∶1 complex formed between ether chain and CPQT were different. However, the chemical shift changes of different aromatic rings in the 1∶2 complex or 1∶3 complex formed between ether chain and CPQT were the same. They can become molecular device which may be controlled at a molecular level.

Abstract:Crown ether-based cryptands have attracted much attention not only because of their 3D spatial architectures but also due to their good application prospects. In recent years, our group has prepared a series of supramolecular assemblies containing bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptands. Firstly, by attaching a bisthiotetrathiafulvalene (STTFS) unit to the third arm of the cryptand, a redox-switchable cryptand was synthesized successfully. It was found that the dethreading-rethreading processes between this cryptand and the guests could be well-controlled in different redox states owing to the specific redox-active properties of the STTFS unit. Secondly, two types of cryptand-based host-guest complexes were also constructed successfully, in which P=O functional groups were located at the different positions of the third arms. These two new cryptands were capable of forming [2] pseudorotaxanes with the paraquat guest both in solution and in the solid state. Moreover, the generated [2] pseudorotaxanes could further self-assemble into supramolecular poly[2] pseudorotaxanes in the solid state. Interestingly, it was found that two different types of supramolecular poly[2] pseudorotaxanes were formed in almost linear and zigzag shapes in the solid state. Thirdly, a pillar[5] arene-fused cryptand with two different cavities was also synthesized successfully. The cavity of BMP32C10-based cryptand in this tricyclic host molecule could selectively interact with the paraquat guest. The complexation behaviours between host and two different guest species were selective, and more importantly, in an orthogonal fashion. And based on this orthogonal self-assembly of two host-guest interactions, a novel type of supramolecular polymer was constructed easily and conveniently. These above researches of cryptands will provide the diverse motifs for the constructions of molecular devices and supramolecular materials.

Abstract:Three novel hetero[3]rotaxanes, which comprise one neutral tetraamide cyclophane, one tetracationic cyclophane, and one linear component, have been assembled by utilizing hydrogen-bonding and donor-acceptor interactions, through three neutral [2]rotaxanes as intermediates. Three tetracationic [2]rotaxanes are also prepared for property comparison. For all three linear components, diamide subunits, the hydrogen-bonding templating moieties, are introduced at the center of the molecules, while the electron-rich hydrogquinone subunits, the donor-acceptor interaction templates, are incorporated between the diamides and the triphenylmethyl stoppers. Compared with the reported [3]rotaxanes, the novel hetero[3]rotaxanes exhibit remarkably intensified spatial interaction between the two ring components, which had been proved by (1)H NMR and UV study. For the first time, inter-ring NOEs are observed for interlocked [3]rotaxanes.

Abstract:We report novel pseudorotaxanes based on the complexation between pillar[4]arene[1]quinone and 1,10-dibromodecane. The complexation is found to have a 1:1 host–guest complexation stoichiometry in chloroform but a 2:1 host–guest complexation stoichiometry in the solid state. From single crystal X-ray diffraction, the linear guest molecules thread into cyclic pillar[4]arene[1]quinone host molecules in the solid state, stabilized by CH∙∙∙π interactions and hydrogen bonds. The bromine atoms at the periphery of the guest molecule provide convenience for the further capping of the pseudorotaxanes to construct rotaxanes.
