Abstract:AbstractEfficient host–guest complexation and interesting self‐assembled structures formed between two crown ether‐based cryptands and a 1,2‐bis(4‐pyridinium)ethane derivative 3 are reported. By self‐assembly of cis‐dibenzo‐24‐crown‐8‐based cryptand 1 and guest 3, a [3]pseudorotaxane was formed in solution, which further formed a supramolecular poly[3]pseudorotaxane structure in the solid state driven by π‐π stacking interactions. Meanwhile, a [2]pseudorotaxane, obtained from self‐assembly of a bis(m‐phenylene)‐32‐crown‐10‐based cryptand 2 and guest 3, can form a supramolecular poly[2]pseudorotaxane structure in the solid state. This difference in the binding model reflects the diversity of host–guest chemistry of crown ether‐based cryptands. Furthermore, these host–guest recognition processes and self‐assembled structures were fully characterized by 1H NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single‐crystal X‐ray analysis. Interestingly, formation of the [3]pseudorotaxane between cryptand 1 and guest 3 can be reversibly controlled by adding and removing potassium cations in acetone. This reversible complexation process provides a simple on/off mechanism that can be used in the construction of controllable molecular switches.

Abstract:A series of poly(hydroquinone ether)s containing propanetriol units were prepared from hydroquinone and epoxy chloropropane in good yields. The oligomers can self-assemble into a novel pseudorotaxane with π-electron-deficient bipyridinium cyclophane(CPQT) via π-π stacking interaction and weak interaction. The partial temperature-dependent 1H NMR spectra of pseudorotaxane between poly(hydroquinone ether) and CPQT showed that the chemical shift changes of different aromatic rings in the 1∶1 complex formed between ether chain and CPQT were different. However, the chemical shift changes of different aromatic rings in the 1∶2 complex or 1∶3 complex formed between ether chain and CPQT were the same. They can become molecular device which may be controlled at a molecular level.

Abstract:The structural complexity of mechanically interlocked molecules are very attractive to chemists owing to the challenges they present. In this article, novel mechanically interlocked molecules with a daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]rotaxane motif were efficiently synthesized. In addition, a novel integrative self-sorting strategy is demonstrated, involving an ABB-type (A for host, dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8), and B for guest, ammonium salt sites) monomer and a macrocycle host, benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7), in which the assembled species in hydrogen-bonding-supported solvent only includes a novel daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]pseudorotaxane. The found self-sorting process involves the integrative recognition between B21C7 macrocycles and carefully designed components simultaneously containing two types of secondary ammonium ions and a host molecule, DB24C8 crown ether. The self-sorting strategy is integrative to undertake self-recognition behavior to form one single species of pseudorotaxane compared with the previous report. This self-sorting system can be used for the efficient one-pot synthesis of a daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]rotaxane in a good yield. The structure of hetero[4]rotaxane was confirmed by (HNMR)-H-1 spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization (HR-ESI) mass spectrometry.

Abstract:Self-assembly of polypseudorotaxanes in high-polar organic solvents is difficult due to remarkably weak interactions between macrocycles and axles. Reported here is a novel metal-coordinated poly[2]pseudorotaxane constructed by pillar[5]arene, 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl pyridinium)butane, and [PdCl2(PhCN)2] in highly polar organic solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Utilizing a combination of 1H NMR, NOESY, DOSY, DLS, SEM, and viscosity measurements, the formation of polypseudorotaxane was shown to be dependent on the concentration of [2]pseudorotaxanes/[PdCl2(PhCN)2] and temperature. Furthermore, a temperature-responsive supramolecular gel with reversibly gel–sol transformation was obtained via spontaneous assembly of the polypseudorotaxanes at high concentrations.

Abstract:A new cryptand, bis(1,3,5-phenylene)tri(1,4,7,10-tetraoxadecyl) (3a), has been synthesized in good yield from bis(5-hydroxy-1,3-phenylene)-26-crown-8 (2a) and tri(ethylene glycol) ditosylate using pseudo-high dilution conditions. 3a forms a strong 1:1 complex with paraquat (1) in acetone solution with a high apparent association constant, 1.4 x 10(4) M(-)(1). A stoichiometry of 1:1 was also observed by mass spectrometry in the gaseous state. However, in the solid state, as determined by X-ray crystallography, the two complexes of 3a and the previously reported homologous cryptand, bis(1,3,5-phenylene)tri(1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxatridecyl) (3b), with paraquat (1) have 2:1 stoichiometry. A unique feature of these trimolecular pseudorotaxane-like complexes is that the guest occupies parts of the cavities of two cryptand molecules. For the first time it was found that in cryptand-based complexes, different stoichiometries are possible for the same host-guest pair.

Abstract:Crown ether-based cryptands have attracted much attention not only because of their 3D spatial architectures but also due to their good application prospects. In recent years, our group has prepared a series of supramolecular assemblies containing bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptands. Firstly, by attaching a bisthiotetrathiafulvalene (STTFS) unit to the third arm of the cryptand, a redox-switchable cryptand was synthesized successfully. It was found that the dethreading-rethreading processes between this cryptand and the guests could be well-controlled in different redox states owing to the specific redox-active properties of the STTFS unit. Secondly, two types of cryptand-based host-guest complexes were also constructed successfully, in which P=O functional groups were located at the different positions of the third arms. These two new cryptands were capable of forming [2] pseudorotaxanes with the paraquat guest both in solution and in the solid state. Moreover, the generated [2] pseudorotaxanes could further self-assemble into supramolecular poly[2] pseudorotaxanes in the solid state. Interestingly, it was found that two different types of supramolecular poly[2] pseudorotaxanes were formed in almost linear and zigzag shapes in the solid state. Thirdly, a pillar[5] arene-fused cryptand with two different cavities was also synthesized successfully. The cavity of BMP32C10-based cryptand in this tricyclic host molecule could selectively interact with the paraquat guest. The complexation behaviours between host and two different guest species were selective, and more importantly, in an orthogonal fashion. And based on this orthogonal self-assembly of two host-guest interactions, a novel type of supramolecular polymer was constructed easily and conveniently. These above researches of cryptands will provide the diverse motifs for the constructions of molecular devices and supramolecular materials.

Abstract:A bis-urea-functionalized pillar[5]arene has been synthesized and shown to form [2]pseudorotaxanes spontaneously with linear alkyl dicarboxylates in highly polar solvent DMSO, in which the hydrogen bonding interactions between the bis-urea hydrogens and dicarboxylate oxygens play an important role in stabilizing the novel [2]pseudorotaxanes alongside C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

Abstract:The first cryptand/monopyridinium salt [3]pseudorotaxanes were prepared from two cryptand hosts and two bispyridinium guests as confirmed by proton NMR characterization, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray analysis. Abstract:A kind of pseudopolyrotaxanes was prepared by supramolecular self-assembly of poly (4-vinyl-N-n-butylpyridinium bromide) (P4VBuBr 2) with cucurbituril[6] (CB[6]) in water at room temperature. The chemical structure of pseudopolyrotaxanes was confirmed by H-1-NMR, IR spectras and elemental analysis: CB[6] beads are localized aliphatic chain in side-chain of 2, and combine N+ by non-covalent bonds. Molar ratio of CB[6] to the repeat unit of 2 is 0.28 : 1, 0.2 : 1 and 0.1 : L The properties of these pseudopolyrotaxanes were studied by thermogravimetry analysis(TGA), UV-Vis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements and adding NaBr to the solution of the pesodupolyrotaxanes. The results show that pseudopolyrotaxanes have higher thermal stability, stronger absorption band and higher crystallizability than the parent polymers. The thermal decomposition temperature of pesudopolyrotaxanes increases with increasing the amount of CB [6] threaded on the polymer. NaBr is a good precipitating agent for the pesudopolyrotaxanes.

Abstract:By the self-assembly of a bis(meta-phenylene)-32-crown-10 bearing two electron-donating groups (carbazoles) with electron-accepting paraquat derivatives, the first [2]pseudorotaxane and the first pseudocryptand-type poly[2]pseudorotaxane based on bis(meta-phenylene)-32-crown-10 were isolated as crystalline solids as shown by X-ray analyses.

Abstract:Supramolecular copolymers with complex architectures and emergent functions constitute a class of challenging but enticing synthetic targets in polymer science. Individual building blocks can be tailored to endow a resulting supramolecular copolymer with increased structural and functional complexity. Herein, we describe the construction of a linear supramolecular copolymer comprising mechanically interlocked segments with hydrogen-bonding metallorhomboidal units. Specifically, a hierarchical supramolecular polymerization of a crown ether-based [2]rotaxane and a discrete organoplatinum(II) metallacycle driven by 2-ureido-4-pyrimidinone (UPy) quadruple hydrogen bonding provides the impetus for its formation. This system demonstrates enhanced structural complexity accessed by the unification of orthogonal noncovalent interactions: metal coordination, host-guest chemistry, and multiple hydrogen bonding interfaces.
