Abstract:The organic-inorganic hybrid (BEDT-TTF)3[Cu2(m-C2O4)3]·2CH3CH2OH (I)was synthesized using the electrocrystallization method. It composes q21-phase organic donor layer and an inorganic antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with the Jahn-Teller distortion. The disordered solvent molecules CH3CH2OH are present within the cavities of the honeycomb lattice. The formal charge of donor molecules was assigned to +2/3 based on bond lengths in TTF core and corresponded to Raman spectra. Jahn-Teller effect on conductivity and magnetization is studied. It is a semiconductor with srt = 0.04 S/cm and Ea = 40 meV. No long-range ordering is observed above 2 K from zero-field cooling/field cooling magnetization and confirmed by specific heat measurement. The spin frustration with f > 10 from the antiferromagnetic copper-oxalate-framework was observed. It is a candidate for quantum spin liquid.

Abstract:Abstract This month's cover picture results from Professor Bin Zhang's collaborative work between Chinese Academy of Sciences and Peking University (China). Since the discovery of high‐temperature superconductors for hole doping on parent antiferromagnetic compound La2CuO4, the antiferromagnetic molecular crystal with a (4,4) grid copper‐formate framework Cu(HCOO)2(H2O)4 and its deuterated compound (Cu(DCOO)2(D2O)4) have been studied extensively for supposed dual‐functional molecular crystals. The cover picture shows the ideal situation by replacing intercalated H2O with an organic donor. The organic–inorganic hybrid (BEDT‐TTF)2Cu2(HCOO)5 is obtained through the electrochemical oxidation of neutral BEDT‐TTF in the presence of an ammonium salt of the 1D copper‐formate framework [(C2H5)3NH]2Cu2(HCOO)5 in a C6H5Cl‐C2H5OH solution. Abstract:The organic-inorganic hybrid charge-transfer salt of BETS and a two-dimensional oxalate-metalate: BETS3[Cu-2(C2O4)(3)](CH3OH)(2) (1) was obtained by the electrochemical oxidation of neutral BETS in the presence of [(C2H5)(3)NH](2)Cu(C2O4)(2) in a C6H5Cl-CH3OH solution. 1 crystallizes in a triclinic crystal system with cell parameters: a = 8.7716(3) angstrom, b = 16.9903(6) angstrom, c = 20.5716(7) angstrom, alpha = 104.794(2)degrees,beta = 102.209(2)degrees, gamma = 92.243(2)degrees, V = 2883.1(2) angstrom(3) and P1 in 293 K. Donor layers and Jahn-Teller distorted honeycomb anions stack alternatively along the c axis in 1. The crystal structure of 1 is similar to the reported compound [BEDT-TTF](3)[Cu-2(C2O4)(3)](CH3OH)(2) (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylene-dithio) tetrathiafulvalene, ET). Compared with the BEDT-TTF salt, the c axis expands by 2.3% at room temperature, the shorter interaction between the donor molecules increases, the room temperature conductivity increases from 4 S cm(-1) to 140 S cm(-1) and the antiferromagnetic interaction between the metal atoms with Jahn-Teller distortion through the oxalato-bridge enhances.

Abstract:Nowadays, ferroelectric organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite represents a crucial issue since it exhibits a huge potential to enhance solar cell efficiency significantly. Furthermore, introducing magnetism into the polar organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites can open up new possibilities for designing novel multiferroic materials and expanding their practical applications. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of the prototypical CH3NH3MnBr3 using first-principles calculations. Our findings suggest that this material is a promising organic-inorganic hybrid multiferroic, exhibiting ferroelectricity and G-type antiferromagnetism simultaneously. The estimate of the polarization for the orthorhombic phase is similar to 22.11 mu C cm(-2). The contributions of the polar MA cations and MnBr3 inorganic framework to the polarization are disentangled to be around 32 and 68% for MA cations and the MnBr3 inorganic framework, respectively. The interplay between them is analyzed in terms of energy and electronic structure, suggesting possible routes for the transition between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric states and the polarization switching path.

Abstract:Two polymorphic hybrid organic-inorganic bilayered magnetic conductors (BEDT-TTF)(3)(FeCl4)(2) (I and II) (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene) were obtained by the diffusion method. I crystallizes in a monoclinic system with cell parameters: a = 55.9187(7) angstrom, b = 6.7424(1) angstrom, c = 14.9057(3) angstrom, beta = 10 1.056(1)degrees, 5515.5(2) angstrom(3), Z = 4, and C2/c at 290 K, and it transforms to a triclinic system at 220 K: a = 13.4440(2) angstrom, b = 14.6761(2) angstrom, c = 28.1529(5) angstrom, alpha = 100.738(1)degrees, beta = 96.875(1)degrees, gamma = 90.017(1)degrees, V = 5416.8(2) angstrom(3), Z = 4 and P (1) over bar which is stable to 110 K. II crystallizes in a triclinic system with cell parameters: a = 6.7396(3) angstrom, b = 9.9640(5) angstrom, c = 21.132(1) angstrom, alpha = 79.536(2)degrees, beta = 81.032(2)degrees, gamma = 81.066(3)degrees, V = 1367.3(1) angstrom(3), Z = 1, and P (1) over bar 290 K. They both contain two donor layers having formal charge of BEDT-TTF+0.5 in layer-A and BEDT-TTF+1.0 in layer-B. The donor arrangements in layer-A are delta-type in I and beta'-type in II, while the donor arrangements in layer-B and anion arrangements in I and II are also different. Layer-A is separated from layer-B by FeCl4-. The energy band calculation indicates a Peierls-like metal-insulator transition in the transverse direction at 220 K in I (sigma(300K) = 120 S.cm(-1)), and a Mott insulating state in II (sigma(300K) = 10(-2) S.cm(-1) and E-alpha = 0.2 eV). The presence of pi-d interactions between donors and anions results in the magnetic anomalies observed at 4.8 K in I and 2.7 K in II.

Abstract:Great attention has been paid to organic-inorganic hybrids in searching for single-phase multiferroics because of their flexible structure design. Here, a new [CuCl4](2-) based organic-inorganic hybrid, (bix)CuCl4 center dot H2O (bix = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene), is synthesized via a simple solution method. Different from most [CuCl4](2-) based organic-inorganic hybrids, tetrahedral [CuCl4](2-) units in (bix)CuCl4 center dot H2O are connected to each other through water molecules and form one dimensional chains. The coexistence of ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic ordering in (bix)CuCl4 center dot H2O is demonstrated. Its spontaneous polarization and coercive field at room temperature are 2.03 mu C cm(-2) and 0.32 kV cm(-1), respectively. Furthermore, (bix)CuCl4 center dot H2O films with high quality can be easily prepared, which makes them suitable for application in device fabrication.

Abstract:The electronic structure and magnetic properties of the moleculer-based magnet [Cu(mu-cbdca)(H2O)](n) (cbdca=cyclobutanedicarboxylate) compound with copper ions as the metallic magnetic center were studied using the FP_LAPW(first-principle full-potential linearized augmented plane wave) method of first-principles, based on density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) method and local spin density approximation (LSDA) method. The total energies of the ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic. and non-magnetic phases of organic-inorganic metal phosphonoacetate [Cu(mu-cbdca)(H2O)](n) were calculated. The calculations revealed that the compound [Cu(mu-cbdca)(H2O)](n) had a stable metal-ferromagnetic ground state, which was in agreement with the experimental result. There were large and positive spin populations on copper (II) ions, small and positive populations on the oxygen and carbon atoms of the bidentate ligand, which connected to the copper ions.

Abstract:Hydrothermal synthesis method of an organic-inorganic hybrid coordination polymer, Cu3(BTC)2, was explored. The feasible synthesis conditions for Cu3(BTC)2 were the copper nitrate/trimesic acid molar ratio of 0.6-3.0, the ethanol/water molar ratio of 0.440-0.146, 373 K and crystallization time of 3 d. The hydrogen storage properties of Cu3(BTC)2 were studied. It is proved that the hydrogen storage of Cu3(BTC)2 could be 2.10% (mass fraction) at 77 K in the pressure of 1.41 MPa, which was 0.50% more than that of typical aluminosilicate zeolites, being a kind of hydrogen adsorption materials of great worth.
Ferromagnetic Negative Charge-Transfer Insulator: from Theoretical Proposal to Material Realization

Abstract: Here we propose another type of ferromagnetic semiconductors: ferromagnetic negative charge-transfer insulator (FNCTI). In FNCTI, the negative charge-transfer states strongly enhance the ferromagnetic (FM) exchange interactions and the orbital hybridization gap permits the magnetic molecular orbitals as the underlying magnetic units rather than local atomic orbitals. Thus the FM exchange interactions are rather strong and decay slowly due to the large spearding of magnetic molecular orbitals. This is distinct from the superexchange mechanism where FM exchange interactions are quite weak as summarized in the well-known Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson semi-empirical rules.Through first-principle calculations with the hybrid functional, PbO-type CrAs monolayer is mapped out to be a FNCTI, which possesses a band gap $\sim$ 0.35 eV, FM nearest-/next-nearest-neighbor exchange coupling strength $\sim$ 57/40 meV, and a high $T_c$ $\sim$ 1500 K respectively. It is believed that the existence of FNCTI validates the long-pending hypothesis by D. I. Khomskii and G. A. Sawatzky in 1997 [Solid State Commun. 102, 87 (1997)].

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric materials have attracted attention from researchers as promising candidates for functional materials, because they combine high performance and low cost. Herein, a new organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric material (C4H10N)6[InBr6][InBr4]3·H2O (1) was synthesized and characterized. The compound undergoes a paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition at TC = 232 K, which is investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dielectric measurements and variable-temperature structural analyses. Crystal structure analyses indicated that the disorder-order transition of Br atoms in [InBr4]- anions depending on temperature was the main factor driving the phase transition from Pbcn to Pna21. This finding will open up a new direction to probe the organic-inorganic hybrid molecular ferroelectric phase transition materials.

Abstract:A 3D organic-inorganic hybrid compound based on the Lindqvist-type polyoxometalate, [{Cu(phen)}3{Cu(μ2-ox)3}{Mo6O19}] (1) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, ox = oxalate), has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, PXRD, XPS, UV-vis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In compound 1, three C2O4(2-) ligands bridge one Cu atom and three Cu(phen) fragments to form a tetra-nuclear copper(II) coordination complex [{Cu(phen)}3{Cu(μ2-ox)3}](2+) unit. The six-node [Mo6O19](2-) clusters are interweaved by the 6-connected tetranuclear copper(II) complex units into an intricate 3D network structure, exhibiting a 4(12)·6(3)-nbo (sodium chloride-type) topology. Compound 1 exhibits the highest connectivity of Lindqvist-type POM hybrid materials. The electrochemical behavior of 1-CPE has been investigated in detail. Furthermore, a diffuse reflectivity spectrum of 1 reveals the presence of an optical band gap and the nature of semiconductivity with a large energy gap. A magnetic susceptibility study reveals predominant antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu(II) bridge units.

Abstract:Low dimensional (LD) organic metal halide hybrids (OMHHs) have recently emerged as new generation functional materials with exceptional structural and property tunability. Despite the remarkable advances in the development of LD OMHHs, optical properties have been the major functionality extensively investigated for most of LD OMHHs developed to date, while other properties, such as magnetic and electronic properties, remain significantly under-explored. Here, we report for the first time the characterization of the magnetic and electronic properties of a 1D OMHH, organic-copper (II) chloride hybrid (C8H22N2)Cu2Cl6. Owing to the antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu atoms through chloride bridges in 1D [Cu2Cl6 2-]∞ chains, (C8H22N2)Cu2Cl6 is found to exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of 24 K. The two-terminal (2T) electrical measurement on a (C8H22N2)Cu2Cl6 single crystal reveals its insulating nature. This work shows the potential of LD OMHHs as a highly tunable quantum material platform for spintronics.

Abstract:A new 2-D inorganic-organic hybrid constructed from mixed-valence Cu(I/II) ions and mixed ligands, [(Cu4CuII)-Cu-I(sip)(2)(bipy)(4)(H2O)(2)](n) (H(3)sip = 5-sulfoisophthalic acid, bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine), has been synthesized and characterized by IR, TGA, XPS, EPR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Two different kinds of chains in the compound constructed from [CuO4] planar squares and [CuN2O] triangulars, respectively, further interconnect together to give rise to an interesting 2-D layer framework. Abstract:Two new molecule-based organic–inorganic hybrid compounds, (H 2 dabco)[M(H 2 O) 6 ][SiF 6 ] 2 (dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane, M = Mn 2+ & Cu 2+ ), affected by the different metal ions and Jahn–Teller effect of Cu 2+ , exhibit metal ion-dependent structural phase transitions, large dielectric response, second harmonic generation (based on Mn 2+ ) and ferroelasticity (based on Cu 2+ ). Abstract:The synthesis and physico-chemical characterization of an organic-inorganic hybrid material, (N, N'-bi-n-butyl-4,4′-bipyridinium tetrabromocuprate, has been reported. This hybrid has been characterized using IR, thermogravimetric and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. In the title salt, (C18H26N2)[CuBr4], the CuBr42− ion shows distorted tetrahedral geometry. The tetrabromocuprate and N, N'-bi-n-butyl-4,4′-bipyridiniums are held together via non-classical CH⋯Br hydrogen bond to form a 3-D hybrid structure. The percentages of hydrogen bonding interactions are analyzed by fingerprint plots of Hirshfeld surface. The XPS spectrum exhibits the signals of coexistence of CuI and CuII ions. However, the hybrid shows EPR silent behavior at room temperature and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility displays an isolation of CuII feature with C=0.46emuK mol−1 and θ approximate to −0.06K in 2–K as well. Such a novel nature is further analyzed and discussed.
