Abstract:The authors investigate the lasing modes in fully chaotic polymer microstadiums under optical pumping. The lasing modes are regularly spaced in frequency, and their amplitudes oscillate with frequency. The numerical simulations reveal that the lasing modes are multiorbit scar modes. The interference of partial waves propagating along the constituent orbits results in local maxima of quality factor at certain frequencies. The observed modulation of lasing mode amplitude with frequency results from the variation of quality factor, which provides the direct evidence of wave interference effect in open chaotic microcavities.

Abstract:Electrically tunable random laser action has been demonstrated in a cavity-free structure. The scattering structure was shaped by the treatment of AC, and a polymer network structure is introduced to fix it. The fluorescence of the laser dye is scattered internally and selectively amplified at the band-edge of the photonic crystal, due to the concentrate of the photonic density of state. As the electric field increased, the deformation of the polymer network causes the cholesteric liquid crystal pitch to form a gradient distribution, resulting in the widening of the bandgap, and the random laser wavelength changes accordingly. This random laser with a broad tuning range (similar to 100 nm) opens new possibilities for the design of highly efficient incoherent light source in a large area with a thickness of micron level.
Adaptive pumping for spectral control of random lasers

Abstract:A laser is not necessarily a sophisticated device: Pumping energy into an amplifying medium randomly filled with scatterers, a powder for instance, makes a perfect "random laser." In such a laser, the absence of mirrors greatly simplifies laser design, but control over emission directionality or frequency tunability is lost, seriously hindering prospects for this otherwise simple laser. Lately, we proposed a novel approach to harness random lasers, inspired by spatial shaping methods recently employed for coherent light control in complex media. Here, we experimentally implement this method in an optofluidic random laser where scattering is weak and modes extend spatially and strongly overlap, making individual selection a priori impossible. We show that control over laser emission can indeed be regained even in this extreme case by actively shaping the spatial profile of the optical pump. This unique degree of freedom, which has never been exploited, allows selection of any desired wavelength and shaping of lasing modes, without prior knowledge of their spatial distribution. Mode selection is achieved with spectral selectivity down to 0.06nm and more than 10dB side-lobe rejection. This experimental method paves the way towards fully tunable and controlled random lasers and can be transferred to other class of lasers.

Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber lasers are wavelength-agile light sources for various scientific and medical applications. Pulse pumping is an efficient way to generate a high power ultrafast Raman fiber laser, which however requires real-time synchronization between the pump pulses and laser cavity. A pulse pumped Raman fiber laser with random distributed feedback is investigated. Under repetitive pulse pumping, compound cavities based on distributed Rayleigh scattering are formed automatically to synchronize with the pump pulse train. In a proof of principle experiment, self-synchronization is observed and a stable picosecond pulsed random laser is generated at 1120 nm with an average power of 170 mW. Raman gain and random distributed feedback are spatially separated in the present pulse pumped laser configuration. This allows a direct characterization of the random distributed feedback and a comparison between random lasing and amplified spontaneous emission, which is not possible in previous continuous wave pumped random Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband tunable cascaded Raman random fiber laser pumped by a tunable (1020-1080 nm) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is investigated. By continuously adjusting the pump laser wavelength, the Raman random laser tunes accordingly due to the Raman gain competition. By increasing the pump power, up to the 5th order Raman random laser is achieved. As a result, 300 nm of continuous wavelength tuning from 1070 to 1370 nm is achieved by adjusting the pump wavelength and power altogether. The highest output power is 1.8 W at 1360 nm with an optical efficiency of 15% from 1080 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest wavelength tuning range reported for a random fiber laser so far. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Here we report electric-field-induced, wavelength-tunable random lasing action in a liquid-crystal infiltrated disordered planar microcavity. With the increasing of external voltage from 0 V to 30 V, the emission wavelength of the random laser was continuously tuned from 648 run to 597 nm. Abstract:Random lasers are a type of lasers that lack typical resonator structures, offering benefits such as easy integration, low cost, and low spatial coherence. These features make them popular for speckle-free imaging and random number generation. However, due to their high threshold and phase instability, the production of picosecond random lasers has still been a challenge. In this work, we have developed three dyes incorporating polymer optical fibers doped with various scattering nanoparticles to produce short-pulsed random fiber lasers. Notably, stable picosecond random laser emission lasting600 ps is observed at a low pump energy of 50 μJ, indicating the gain-switching mechanism. Population inversion and gain undergo an abrupt surge as the intensity of the continuously pumped light nears the threshold level. When the intensity of the continuously pumped light reaches a specific value, the number of inversion populations in the “scattering cavity”surpasses the threshold rapidly. Simulation results based on a model that considers power-dependent gain saturation confirmed the above phenomenon. This research helps expand the understanding of the dynamics behind random medium-stimulated emission in random lasers and opens up possibilities for mode locking in these systems.

Abstract:Linewidth-tunable lasers have great application requirements in the fields of high-resolution spectroscopy, optical communications and other industry and scientific research. Here, the switchable plasmonic scattering of the metal particles with plenty of nanogaps is proposed as an effective method to achieve linewidth-tunable random lasers. By using the nonlinear optical effect of the environment medium, the metal particles demonstrate the transition from local scattering of nanogaps with high spatial frequency to traditional Mie scattering free from detail information with increasing the pump power density. Based on these two scattering processes, random lasers can be continuously driven from a narrow-linewidth configuration exhibiting nanogap effect dominated resonances to a broad-linewidth regime of collectively coupling oscillating among nanowires (or nanoflowers), demonstrating the dynamic range of linewidth exceeds two orders of magnitude. This phenomenon may provide a platform for further studying of the conclusive mechanism of random lasing and supply a new approach to tune the linewidth of random lasers for further applications in high-illumination imaging and biology detection.

Abstract:Abstract Ever since the mid-1960’s, locking the phases of modes enabled the generation of laser pulses of duration limited only by the uncertainty principle, opening the field of ultrafast science. In contrast to conventional lasers, mode spacing in random lasers is ill-defined because optical feedback comes from scattering centres at random positions, making it hard to use mode locking in transform limited pulse generation. Here the generation of sub-nanosecond transform-limited pulses from a mode-locked random fibre laser is reported. Rayleigh backscattering from decimetre-long sections of telecom fibre serves as laser feedback, providing narrow spectral selectivity to the Fourier limit. The laser is adjustable in pulse duration (0.34–20 ns), repetition rate (0.714–1.22 MHz) and can be temperature tuned. The high spectral-efficiency pulses are applied in distributed temperature sensing with 9.0 cm and 3.3 × 10 −3 K resolution, exemplifying how the results can drive advances in the fields of spectroscopy, telecommunications, and sensing.

Abstract:This paper presents a chip-scale random lasing action utilizing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) wrinkles with random periods as disordered medium. Nanoscale wrinkles with long range disorder structures are formed on the oxidized surface of a PDMS slab and confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Light multiply scattered at each PDMS wrinkle-dye interfaces is optically amplified in the presence of pump gain. The shift of laser emission wavelength when pumping at different regions indicates the randomness of the winkle period. In addition, a relatively low threshold of about 27 μJ/mm2 is realized, which is comparable with traditional optofluidic dye laser. This is due to the unique sinusoidal Bragg-grating-like random structure. Contrast to conventional microfluidic dye laser that inevitably requires the accurate design and implementation of microcavity to provide optical feedback, the convenience in both fabrication and operation makes PDMS wrinkle based random laser a promising underlying element in lab-on-a-chip systems and integrated microfluidic networks.

Abstract:Random lasing with special structured light field has broad application prospects in various fields. However, the complex spatial modes of random lasing increase the difficulty of light field regulation and limit its practical application. Here, a vortex random lasing with dynamically tunable wavelength and orbital angular momentum is proposed based on the microfluidic channel. Different color random lasers are integrated into the same microfluidic channel for coarse control of the emission wavelengths from 462 to 685 nm by dynamically controlling the liquid flow. A special-shape cavity with a variable size of a gain region is further constructed to finely manipulate the emission wavelengths. Moreover, the vortex random lasing with tunable orbital angular momentum mode from −50 to 50 is realized. The results provide an outstanding strategy for generating the partially coherent vortex beams and may promote the practical applications of random lasers in the fields of sensing, imaging, and communication.

Abstract:Synthetic dimensions in photonic structures provide unique opportunities for actively manipulating light in multiple degrees of freedom. Here, we theoretically explore a dispersive waveguide under the dynamic phase modulation that supports single pulse manipulations in the synthetic (2+1) dimensions. Compared with the counterpart of the conventional (2+1) space-time, we explore temporal diffraction and frequency conversion in a synthetic time-frequency space while the pulse evolves along the spatial dimension. By introducing the effective gauge potential well for photons in the synthetic time-frequency space with the control of the modulation phase, we show that a rich set of pulse propagation behaviors can be achieved, including confined pulse propagation, fast/slow light, and pulse compression. With the additional nonlinear oscillation subject to the effective force along the frequency axis of light, we provide an exotic approach for actively manipulating the single pulse in both temporal and spectral domains, which shows the great promise for applications of the pulse processing and optical communications in integrated photonics.

Abstract:Amplified spontaneous emission and random lasing are investigated in random systems with dye-doped nematic liquid crystals. And that temporal stability of random lasing is analyzed. The influence of pumping polarization as well as the multiple scattering and reflection between boundaries on the emission behavior and the formation of coherent feedback is investigated in detail. For freely suspended samples, certain emission wavelength can be obtained by changing the pump wavelength. This feature is useful in making wavelength-tunable lasers. Moreover, as the pumping thickness of wedge sample increases, the emission spectrum is red shifted and the average spacing of adjacent spikes decreases. This property can be applied in laser mode selection, i.e., the number of modes within certain wavelength range can be chosen.
Laser Wakefield Driven Generation of Isolated Carrier-Envelope-Phase Tunable Intense Subcycle Pulses

Abstract:Sources of intense, ultrashort electromagnetic pulses enable applications such as attosecond pulse generation, control of electron motion in solids, and the observation of reaction dynamics at the electronic level. For such applications, both high intensity and carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) tunability are beneficial, yet hard to obtain with current methods. In this Letter, we present a new scheme for generation of isolated CEP tunable intense subcycle pulses with central frequencies that range from the midinfrared to the ultraviolet. It utilizes an intense laser pulse that drives a wake in a plasma, copropagating with a long-wavelength seed pulse. The moving electron density spike of the wake amplifies the seed and forms a subcycle pulse. Controlling the CEP of the seed pulse or the delay between driver and seed leads to CEP tunability, while frequency tunability can be achieved by adjusting the laser and plasma parameters. Our 2D and 3D particle-in-cell simulations predict laser-to-subcycle-pulse conversion efficiencies up to 1%, resulting in relativistically intense subcycle pulses.

Abstract:By numerically solving Maxwell’s equations and rate equations, a comprehensive calculation on spectrum intensity and spectral widths of three localized modes via different pumping rates in one-dimensional (1D) disordered medium is investigated, in which pumping rate is described by a time function with duration of 80 fs. The spectral intensities varying with the peak value of femtosecond (fs) pumping pulse are calculated in the same disordered medium, and the calculated spectral intensities are compared with those with fixed pumping (simulation time is 6 ps). These results show that excited modes with fs pulse pumping rates are only slightly different from those with fixed pumping (picosecond (ps) pulse), which suggests the excited modes largely depend on the medium rather than the pumping rate at least for those of which pumping rates are fs and ps. At last, lifetimes of three excited modes are calculated. It is found that there is a certain corresponding relation between the mode’s lifetime and its threshold-pumping rate, which is the longer lifetime with lower threshold.

Abstract:Manipulating light dynamics in optical microcavities has been made mainly either in real or momentum space. Here we report a phase-space tailoring scheme, simultaneously incorporating spatial and momentum dimensions, to enable deterministic and in situ regulation of photon transport in a chaotic microcavity. In the time domain, the chaotic photon transport to the leaky region can be suppressed, and the cavity resonant modes show stronger temporal confinement with quality factors being improved by more than 1 order of magnitude. In the spatial domain, the emission direction of the cavity field is controlled on demand through rerouting chaotic photons to a desired channel, which is verified experimentally by the far-field pattern of a quantum-dot microlaser. This work paves a way to in situ study of chaotic physics and promoting advanced applications such as arbitrary light routing, ultrafast random bit generation, and multifunctional on-chip lasers.
