Abstract:An improved finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed for predicting transient responses of coaxial cables which are placed in an electrically large metallic cabin with arbitrary slots and circular windows on its wall. By integrating nodal analysis, multi-conductor transmission line (MTL) equation and FDTD method, we are able to accurately capture electromagnetic interference (EMI) effects on the cables. Our developed algorithm is verified by calculating frequency-dependent transfer impedance of coaxial cables together with induced currents. Numerical calculations are further performed to show the near-end coupled current responses of braided and tubular cables, respectively, and the effects of incident directions and polarizations of the illuminated electromagnetic pulse are both taken into account. Abstract:An efficient analytical model for the transfer impedance and admittance of a noncoaxial/twinax braided-shielded cable with apertures on its sheath is proposed by generalizing the old Vance's and Kley's formulas, and it is derived using the complex analyses with an appropriate conformal mapping. Therefore, such a noncoaxial cable is converted into a coaxial one which can be studied using the traditional multiconductor transmission line method. It is shown that the aperture inductance is related to the position of the inner conductor and the radial position of each aperture on its sheath. In addition, the modal domain analysis is performed to obtain the common-mode (CM) and differential-mode (DM) transfer impedance/admittance of the twinax braided-shielded cable, with CM and DM currents inside the inner conductors examined. The proposed model is validated by comparing the results with that obtained by the method of moments (MoM)-based commercial software FEKO. It is found that the uniform distribution of the apertures on the sheath reduces the induced DM current significantly

Abstract:Accurate evaluation of transmission line model at high frequencies for characterizing field-to-wire coupling of coated twisted wire pair (TWP) with a grounded conductor is performed in this paper. We derive the main steps to solve the TWP problem. Further, such coated TWP with a ground conductor is simulated for different geometrical parameters of the TWP, and different incident wave frequencies, directions and polarization angles. In particular, the approximation condition of TLM model is examined in detail, and most results calculated by the TLM model are beyond 1GHz but below 5GHz. The captured common mode and differential mode currents are compared with that of commercial software FEKO, but the cost for TLM model simulation is very low.

Abstract:Diagnostic methods for fault location in cable insulation have become increasingly vital with the development of long-distance cables. This article presents an improved method for fault location based on the complex reflection coefficient spectrum (CRCS). First, a mathematical model for a long high-voltage cable line with consideration of a distribution-parameter circuit of cable joints is established in the frequency domain, and the CRCS of the cable with joints is analyzed. Next, based on the principle of frequency domain reflectometry (FDR), an algorithm in time-frequency conversion which uses the CRCS as the analysis spectrum is proposed. And the positioning sensitivity of the method is improved by implementing a data process adopting a Chebyshev window function which is controllable and reduces the sidelobe effect effectively. Furthermore, the improved method is evaluated by performing the simulations and two field verification tests. In a field test for a 5.1-km-long 110 kV cable, the multiple cable joints could be located effectively, and the relative error is between 0.14% and 1.49%. Then, the method was conducted for the positioning of a high-resistance fault and multiple joints on a 2.7-km-long 110 kV cable and the relative error is 0.37%. It is worth noting that the cross-bonding links of both cable tests were artificially replaced with temporary links straight across each joint. For the cross-bonded cable system, the test result shows that an obvious reflection is found at the cross-bonding point, which can reduce the reliability and accuracy of the present method.
Time Domain Reflectometry Property of Defective Coaxial Cable and Its Applications

Abstract:Based upon the application of the time domain reflectometry(TDR) in the monitoring of the defective coaxial cable, a calculation model of TDR system was presented to study the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic wave in defective coaxial cable system. The propagation characteristics of electromagnetic wave in three types of sheared coaxial cables were tested. The influences of coaxial cable's shear deformation on the characteristic impedance of coaxial cable and the TDR signal were analyzed. The theoretical and experimental results show that the ratio of the impedance of a coaxial cable to its shear deformation is almost a constant, which depends on the type of the cable; and that the spike of reflection wave increases with the shear deformation. Therefore, it is applicable to monitor the slope stability by observing the reflection signal of TDR system.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved high-frequency equivalent circuit model is developed to represent the joint high-frequency behavior for the time and frequency-domain analyses. The model is based on improved high-order multiple-T sections. Considering the shape variation in axial direction, the cable joint can be approximated as series-connected uniform line pieces, each of which can be equivalent as several high-order T sections. By using vector fitting (VF) method, the equivalent circuit parameters are extracted from calculated impedance and admittance in unit length which are obtained through measured geometrical dimensions and material properties. The parameters of circuit model parameters are easy to obtain with robustness. The model can be efficiently implemented in the time domain simulation of PD propagation characteristics and precisely PD locating in power cable system.

Abstract:Cable fault location is generally much more difficult if cable defect has not reached the level of serious breakdown. Traditional methods such as time domain reflectometry (TDR) and partial discharge detection cannot solve this problem well due to their low sensitivity. This paper proposes a new non-destructive detection method based on the impedance spectroscopy (IS), which can effectively locate soft faults in the cable. In this paper, a numerical model for cable with distributed parameters is established firstly. Based on this model, cable faults are extracted from the imaginary part of impedance spectrum with Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The Chebyshev window is introduced to suppress interference and enhance signal-to-noise ratio, which improves the sensitivity and accuracy of fault location significantly. Experiments and simulations show that this method can well locate multi-segment defects in cables with good accuracy. The window function successfully amplifies the normalized amplitude of faults and improves the positioning accuracy. Compared with other method, this method reduces distortion points effectively. The fault location error is within 0.53%, which has great potential for field application.

Abstract:Soft faults in cables may trigger short circuits and open circuits in time, in that they ought to be detected and thus eliminated at the earliest possible stage, as to ensure safe and stable operation of the cables. A method called the time-reversal multiple signal classification (TR-MUSIC) had been proposed in the literature, which has been demonstrated to be an effective technique for locating soft faults in cables, due to its high resolution and excellent noise robustness. However, traditional TR-MUSIC relies on a vector network analyzer (VNA) for measuring the scattering matrix of cables, which adds cost and complexity to its implementation. In this regard, a new way of acquiring the desired scattering parameters is here proposed. An arbitrary function generator is used to inject incident signals into the cable under test (CUT), and an oscilloscope is used to collect the reflected signals. After postprocessing, the phase of scattering parameters can be obtained. There is another key issue in the image of the detection results, and ghost traces caused by the periodicity of Green's function severely impact the vision saliency of the actual fault location, which limits the performance of the fault location. A step frequency variant of TR-MUSIC has been proposed, therefore, to mitigate ghost traces. Experimental results show that the fault location error of the proposed approach is smaller than 0.33% for a 51-m long coaxial cable. Moreover, in the case of introducing noise, the proposed approach can operate in situations with signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) as low as -6 dB.

Abstract:The incipient fault in the underground cable is an intermittent arcing fault with short duration from 1/4 cycle to 4 cycles and can be cleared by itself. It always reoccurs for many times before a permanent fault. The detection and location of incipient faults can help to prevent a permanent fault and enhance power supply reliability. However, accurate incipient fault location is a difficult problem because of its short duration and the non-linearity of the arc model. In this paper, a new idea for accurate underground cable incipient fault location using two-terminal synchronized zero-sequence waveforms is proposed. The two-terminal zero-sequence differential equation is built for fault distance estimation. The proposed algorithm can be applied to locate both sub-cycle and multi-cycle incipient faults. More importantly, an accurate arc model is not required for fault distance estimation. A large number of simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:Frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) is an effective, non-destructive, and fast method for cable defect location. It obtains the position information of local defects by algorithmic processing of impedance spectrum data. However, the conventional algorithm based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is generally implemented by substituting the empirical wave velocity of the tested cable into calculation. And in practice, empirical wave velocities tend to be inaccurate and the empirical wave velocities of many types of cables are unknown, which will result in restricted location accuracy and application scenarios of this method. In order to solve the problem, a wave velocity correction algorithm is proposed in this paper to improve the conventional location method based on FFT. The improved method extracts the frequency-dependent wave velocity from the cable impedance spectrum, then establishes the mapping of wave velocity from frequency domain to time domain, and finally obtains the position information of cable defects by the infinitesimal element method. The simulation and experimental results show that the improved method can reduce defect location errors to 0.19% and effectively improve positioning accuracy compared to the conventional method. At the same time, the improved method can be used in cables with unknown empirical wave velocity, expanding the applicability of conventional FDR methods.

Abstract:Fault detection of railroad signal cable is of great significance to the safety of railroad system. We propose an improved frequency-domain reflection (FDR) method based on simultaneous sampling of signal and noise for locating high-resistance faults, which is the most common fault in railroad signal cables. First, the return signal of the intact cable core and the inductive signal of the twisted pair are obtained by two-channel simultaneous sampling, and the two signals are Fourier transformed into spatial-domain waveforms. Second, the spatial-domain waveforms of the two signals have ambient noise and noise generated by multiple reflections at the transitions. We calculate the proportionality between the two spatial-domain waveforms by the least square method (LSM), denoted as the transmission factor. Finally, the fault line and its twisted pair are sampled synchronously during subsequent cable fault measurements. The fault line signal is subtracted from the product of the transmission factor and the twisted pair signal. The noise generated by the ambient noise and multiple reflections at the transfer is actively eliminated, highlighting the location of the fault and improving the localization effect of the original FDR method. A hardware system was designed based on this algorithm. The hardware system can transmit a 100-kHz–5-MHz frequency sweep signal to the cable, and the return signal required by the active noise reduction algorithm is collected by two-channel synchronized sampling and intermediate frequency (IF) sampling, and the data processing is subsequently carried out in the host computer. The improved algorithm proposed in this article achieves fault location for high impedance faults in cables below 1000 m, with a maximum resistance of 0.5 M . However, the traditional FDR methods cannot obtain effective positioning results, which verifies the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

An Improved Algorithm of Cable Fault Diagnosis Considering Signal Attenuation Compensation

Abstract:The traveling wave along the long-distance cable system exhibits significant attenuation characteristics in the high-frequency region, resulting in severe peak distortion of positioning curves based on the traditional frequency domain reflection (FDR), especially for the faults which is far from the signal injection end. This phenomenon often leads to misjudgment of cable fault severity. In this paper, the attenuation principle of swept frequency signal along the cable and its influence on the FDR positioning result is analyzed in detail. Based on the traveling wave's attenuation characteristics, to address the above issue, an attenuation compensation function is proposed to improve the FDR algorithm, enabling accurate evaluation of cable's fault severity. Simulation and actual tests on the communication cable and power cable demonstrate that the positioning peaks of the same fault type at the different locations are nearly identical for the optimized FDR positioning curve, with difference less than 3%, which verifies the validation of the improved algorithm.

Abstract:An accurate time domain algorithm for fault location using one-terminal data is presented. The algorithm is based on the modal analysis and the R–L model of transmission lines, and utilizes the fault-superimposed components effectively. In the algorithm, the differential equations of fault condition networks and pure-fault networks are combined to determine the fault distance. The fault distance, fault resistance and source parameters at the remote end are solved as the unknown variables of a second-order system by finite difference method. This algorithm eliminates influence of the fault resistance and the opposite source parameters on the fault location accuracy, which have been the main source of error for conventional one-terminal approaches. In addition, the paper discusses manipulations of equations to solvable form and the minimum number of equations required. By the analysis to the correlation of measurement equations and the analytic solution of the fault current and voltage in time domain, the paper demonstrates that one-terminal algorithm has the same precision as two-terminal algorithm in theory. The EMTP simulation results show the validity and high accuracy of the new algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we first build the 3D model of coaxial TSV(CTSV), RDL, and bump of the CTSV interconnect, and extract the equivalent circuit model of each part. Then, we get the S-parameters of the 3D and equivalent circuit model of the CTSV interconnect structure; the validity of the equivalent circuit model is verified by comparing the consistency of the S-parameters. The simulation results show that the maximum errors for the S11 and S21 parameters are 0.4% and 0.18%, respectively, which proves the validity of the equivalent circuit modeling in this paper. Finally, parametric analysis is performed to investigate the effect of different model parameters on the signal-transmission characteristics of the CTSV interconnect.

Abstract:Impedance spectroscopy is widely used as a cable fault location technique with high sensitivity, however, due to interference among multiple fault points, signal attenuation, and complex operating environment, there are some misjudged location points in the obtained location curves. In this paper, the localization of cable defects is achieved by impedance spectroscopy and Fourier transform, and the location of fault points is further obtained by training and testing a series of localization curves obtained by SVM and verified by field data. The results show that SVM can classify the points on the localization curves and realize the intelligent identification of fault points, which reduces the impact of misjudged peaks in the impedance spectrum, obtains better localization results, effectively improves the accuracy of cable fault location.
A Novel Method for Identifying Cable Defect and Improving Location Accuracy Based on Frequency Domain Reflectometry

Abstract:Power cables in the urban power supply system are laid in cable trenches or directly buried underground, and the insulation is susceptible to corrosion and penetration, causing local insulation aging or abrasion. Early detection of soft faults helps prevent power system faults from occurring. This paper proposes a method that can detect cable multi-point soft faults and distinguish fault types based on Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR). Firstly, we establish a numerical calculation model of distributed parameters to analyze the impedance spectroscopy characteristics of different types of defects and the positioning methods and errors. Next, a simulation study was carried out for different characteristics of aging and damage, which means different types of soft faults were successfully distinguished. Then, based on the results of the simulation, experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the positioning algorithm and the feasibility of distinguishing defect types. Simulation and experiment show that the positioning error is within 0.5% and 1% simultaneously. Compared with traditional location methods, the defect location method proposed in this paper can determine the type and severity of the defect while locating multiple defects. The experimental results show that the defect identification method proposed in this paper has great potential for field application.

Abstract:Due to the electrical, thermal, and mechanical stress, the insulating materials of cable undergo a slow aging process in service, which leads to the decline of insulation performance. Besides, friction frequently occurs when the cable is moving or vibrating, which will easily cause mechanical damage including frays and chafes. Both aging and damage will cause the characteristic impedance to change. Therefore, it is of great significance for the safe operation of the cable to analyze the variations of characteristic impedance and to make an effective diagnosis. In this article, a two-dimensional model of the cable containing defects is first built, and the characteristic impedance of the model is calculated by the finite-element method (FEM). Meanwhile, a quantitative analysis of the characteristic impedance under two defect types is carried out. Second, combining the space-time focusing of time-reversal and the time-frequency characteristics of reflectometry, the time-reversal time-frequency domain reflectometry (TRTFDR) is proposed to diagnose the cable faults. Based on the distributed parameters calculated by the FEM, the TRTFDR simulation model is established to study the judgment of different faults. Finally, the validity of this method is verified by experiments.

Fault Identification and Localization of a Time-Frequency Domain Joint Impedance Spectrum of Cables Based on Deep Belief Networks

Abstract:To improve the accuracy of shallow neural networks in processing complex signals and cable fault diagnosis, and to overcome the shortage of manual dependency and cable fault feature extraction, a deep learning method is introduced, and a time-frequency domain joint impedance spectrum is proposed for cable fault identification and localization based on a deep belief network (DBN). Firstly, based on the distribution parameter model of power cables, we model and analyze the cables under normal operation and different fault types, and we obtain the headend input impedance spectrum and the headend input time-frequency domain impedance spectrum of cables under various operating conditions. The headend input impedance amplitude and phase of normal operation and different fault cables are extracted as the original input samples of the cable fault type identification model; the real part of the headend input time-frequency domain impedance of the fault cables is extracted as the original input samples of the cable fault location model. Then, the unsupervised pre-training and supervised inverse fine-tuning methods are used for automatically learning, training, and extracting the cable fault state features from the original input samples, and the DBN-based cable fault type recognition model and location model are constructed and used to realize the type recognition and location of cable faults. Finally, the proposed method is validated by simulation, and the results show that the method has good fault feature extraction capability and high fault type recognition and localization accuracy.

Abstract:To enhance the precision and efficacy in detecting defects of instrumentation and control (I&C) cables within nuclear power plants, this study proposes a model. This model, used in tandem with the time–frequency domain reflectometry method, creates a quantitative association between the severities of a defect and its time–frequency properties. To verify correctness, the proposed model was established on transmission lines to concentrate on their time–frequency response utilizing MATLAB. Besides, the experiment was conducted on multi-core I&C cables with varying severities of external shielding damage. The results indicate that tiny damage to the shielding marginally modifies the characteristic impedance, rendering time-domain reflection signals almost undetectable to the human eye. However, the time–frequency analysis effectively highlights the signature of defects. From the experimental results, the experimental outcomes support the simulation results, confirming the reliability of proposed model. This technique demonstrates superior sensitivity and accuracy in identifying such defects, suggesting that the severity of external shielding damage correlates directly with the peak magnitude in the time–frequency domain cross-correlation. This method augments the capacity to extract detailed defect information during cable maintenance, aiding in the formulation of more comprehensive maintenance strategies.
