The Influence of FeCoCrNi HEA Porous Coating on Dynamic Wetting and Spreading Behaviors of Al Si Alloy on Steel Substrate by Laser Irradiation

Abstract:Aluminum alloys (Al) and steels are significantly differences in the thermophysical properties. This characteristic obstructs their high-quality joining by fusion welding or brazing. To improve the metallurgical bond between Al and steel, introducing transitional interlayers (coatings) on the substrate surface is one of the effective methods. In this study, porous FeCoNiCr high entropy (HEA) alloy coatings were prepared on steel substrates via vacuum sintering. The laser-induced dynamic wetting and spreading behaviors of Al12Si alloy over HEA porous-coated steel and uncoated steel substrates were comparatively studied. By combining the analysis of spreading dynamics and interfacial microstructures, the mechanism of spread was revealed. In terms of wettability, in both Al/uncoated steel and Al/ HEA porous-coated steel systems, the final contact angle decreases with increasing laser power. In terms of spreadability, the spreading behaviors for the Al/uncoated steel system, the dominant factor changed from the control of reaction product to atomic diffusion reactions. However, with the introduction of the HEA porous coating, the spreading behavior of the Al/HEA porous-coated steel system was improved, presumably because of the combination of control of the reactive and capillary forces. In the case of the uncoated steel substrate, the microstructure at the interface was composed of FeAl3, Al7.2Fe1.8Si, and Fe2(Al,Si)5, while it changed to AlNi and Al5FeNi which embedded in the HEA skeletons in the case of coated steel substrate. This paper elucidates the mechanism behind the effect of HEA porous coating on Al/steel wetting and can provide some guidance for HEA, porous coating, laser welding, and many other fields, and serve as a reference for the wetting research on other reactive systems.
