Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an improved Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) architecture supporting bandwidth-scalable physical layer local area network (LAN) emulation. Due to the use of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technology for the LAN traffic transmission, there is no need to change the existing EPON architecture. Only one receiver at each optical network unit (ONU) is required to detect both LAN traffic and EPON downstream traffic, which makes the proposed system simple and cost-effective. Moreover, flexible assignment of LAN traffic bandwidth is realized by allocating different number of subcarriers or using different modulation formats. The 250 Mb/s 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (4-QAM) and 500 Mb/s 16-QAM OFDM LAN traffic are successfully emulated with the EPON traffic in our experiment. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA-PON) has being considered as a promising solution for next generation PONs due to its high spectral efficiency and flexible bandwidth allocation scheme. In order to take full advantage of these merits of OFDMA-PON, a high-efficiency medium access control (MAC) dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) scheme is needed. In this paper, we propose two DBA algorithms which can act on two different stages of a resource allocation process. To achieve higher bandwidth utilization and ensure the equity of ONUs, we propose a DBA algorithm based on frame structure for the stage of physical layer mapping. Targeting the global quality of service (QoS) of OFDMA-PON, we propose a full-range DBA algorithm with service level agreement (SLA) and class of service (CoS) for the stage of bandwidth allocation arbitration. The performance of the proposed MAC DBA scheme containing these two algorithms is evaluated using numerical simulations. Simulations of a 15Gbps network with 1024 sub-carriers and 32 ONUs demonstrate the maximum network throughput of 14.87Gbps and the maximum packet delay of 1.45ms for the highest priority CoS under high load condition.

Abstract:Ethernet-based Passive optical network (E-PON) is the key for next generation access networks. It must have the property of high efficiency, low cost, and support quality of service (QoS). We present a novel media access control (MAC) protocol that maximizes network efficiency by using dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm suitable for E-PON. This protocol minimizes packet delay and delay variation for high priority traffic to ensure QoS. Simulation results show excellent network throughput. Simulation results also show low packet delay and packet delay variation for high priority traffic compare with traditional MAC protocol of E-PON. When the network performs ranging, this protocol ensures zero interruption of high priority traffic, such as audio or video applications.

Abstract:For WLANs, the efficiency of MAC protocol is related to throughput and power saving, which is an important item for wireless communication with limited bandwidth. Much research work has been carried out and some of the proposed schemes are effective. However, most proposals were ether based on contention mode or schedule mode and neither possessed both good characters of two methods. In this paper, we propose a MAC protocol named OSRAP that Scheduled Random access Protocol for one hop WLAN. OSRAP works in two modes, i.e., schedule and contention mode, which is able to dynamically adapt to traffic load and achieves high throughput which is close to transmission capacity in saturated case. Unlike conventional hybrid protocols, every node does not have to intentionally reset any parameter according to the changing traffic load except its queue length. A distinguishing feature of this scheme is the novel way of allowing nodes to work with low delay, as in the contention-based mode, and achieve a high throughput, as in the schedule-based mode, without complicated on-line estimation required in previous schemes. This makes OSRAP simpler and more reliable. Through our analysis results, we show that our scheme can greatly improve the probability of successful transmission which means a high throughput and low delay.

Abstract:ATM based passive optical networks can provide broadband services as defined by the international telecommunication union. The medium access control protocol is of great importance to the access scheme as it controls the flow of traffic in the access network. This paper presents a novel MAC protocol with the ability of traffic profile distortions control for APON system at low cost of bandwidth consumption. We evaluate the protocol performance in the term of cell transfer delay and cell delay variation at different traffic load by computer simulations, which approve the validity of the protocol and the bandwidth allocation algorithm.

Abstract:Recently orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) has been proposed in the passive optical network (PON) for downstream and upstream transmissions. Due to its powerful digital signal processing and high flexibility, OFDMA-PON has emerged as a promising candidate for the next-generation optical access networks. In this letter, we propose a cost-effective upstream scheme based on the interleaved frequency-division multiple access (IFDMA), which is a modified form of OFDMA. The IFDMA has lower peak-to-average power ratio and lower computation complexity at the transmitter, which is cost-effective for the optical network unit. Upstream IFDMA transmission is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:With the progress in optical transmission technology, the photonization of access network is possible. The ATM based passive optical network (APON) is an ideal optical access-network solution that combines the ability of ATM supporting multi-rate, multi-service and the transparent broad-bandwidth transmission ability of the passive optical network. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed multi-level MAC protocol called DMSP, in which both OLT and ONU take part in the permit distribution procedure. The proposed MAC protocol supports diverse ATM service classes, such as CBF, rt-VBR, nrt-VBR, ABR, and UBR traffics and provides multi-priority. The result of computer simulation shows that the proposed MAC protocol is better than the normal priority control protocol in term of CDV performance.

Abstract:The introduction of OFDM into PON networks is to leverage the merits of OFDM to provide the flexibility and reduce the cost. In this paper, we present our latest works on OFDM-PON. Firstly, we propose and demonstrate a novel OFDM-PON upstream transmission architecture with traffic aggregation by orthogonal band multiplexing. The multiplexed 10Gb/s OFDM signal is collectively received. We also conduct a proof-of-concept experiment to verify the architecture. Secondly, we propose and experimentally demonstrate wavelet packet transform based OFDM (WPT-OFDM) using real-valued transforms, which enables the cost-effective intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD). Unlike conventional FFT-based OFDM, the need for cyclic prefix is eliminated due to the time-frequency localization properties of the wavelet.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an important technique to support high speed transmission of broadband traffic in wireless networks, especially broadband wireless local area networks (LANs). Based on OFDM, a new multiple access scheme, called OFDM-TDMA with subcarrier allocation (OFDM-TDMA/SA), is proposed in this paper. It provides more flexibility in resource allocation than other multiple access schemes such as OFDM-TDMA, OFDM-frequency division multiple access (OFDM-FDMA), and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). With OFDM-TDMA/SA, a medium access control (MAC) is designed for broadband wireless LANs. It optimizes bit allocation in subcarriers so that maximum bits are transmitted in each OFDM symbol under a frequency selective fading environment. The OFDM-TDMA/SA MAC protocol also supports three classes of traffic such as guaranteed, controlled-load, and best effort services. Based on the optimum subcarrier bit-allocation algorithm and considering heterogeneous QoS constraints of multimedia traffic, a hierarchical scheduling scheme is proposed to determine the subcarriers and time slots in which a mobile terminal can transmit packets. In such a way, the OFDM-TDMA/SA MAC protocol significantly increases system throughput in a frequency selective fading environment and guarantees QoS of multimedia traffic. Computer simulation is carried out to evaluate the performance of the OFDM-TDMA/SA MAC protocol. Results show that the new MAC protocol outperforms other MAC protocols for OFDM-based wireless LANs.

Abstract:With rapid growth of Internet applications, supporting differentiated service and enlarging system capacity have been new tasks for next generation access system. In recent years, research in OFDMA Passive Optical Networks (PON) has experienced extraordinary development as for its large capacity and flexibility in scheduling. Although much work has been done to solve hardware layer obstacles for OFDMA PON, scheduling algorithm on OFDMA PON system is still under primary discussion. In order to support QoS service on OFDMA PON system, a novel dynamic wavelength bandwidth allocation (DWBA) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Per-stream QoS service is supported in this algorithm. Through simulation, we proved our bandwidth allocation algorithm performs better in bandwidth utilization and differentiate service support.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme to realize high-capacity long-reach orthogonal frequency division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA PON) with cost-effective electro-absorption modulator (EAM). In our scheme, the subcarriers in downstream OFDM signal are properly allocated to the optical network units (ONUs) with different fiber transmission lengths. By this means, the detrimental influence of power fading induced by dispersion and chirp can be avoided, thus all OFDM subcarriers can be modulated with high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format, leading to a high transmission capacity. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed, in which three ONUs with transmission distances of 25, 50, and 100 km are assigned with different subcarriers, respectively. By using distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation technique, an OFDM signal of 34.5 Gb/s is successfully delivered to the ONUs with a bit error ratio (BER) lower than 2 × 10(-3).

Abstract:Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) technology can improve the throughput of wireless networks, and many Media Access Control (MAC) protocols have been proposed to support simultaneous transmissions. But there also exist some limitations or drawbacks in those MAC protocols. They can not utilize the communication resources efficiently, such as MIMA-MAC, PRP-MAC, etc. In this paper, we propose a MAC protocol based on dynamically adjusting the waiting time of CTS packets in MIMO ad hoc networks called DACW-MAC. It can allocate the antenna resources optimally by dynamically adjusting the priority of CTS. The shorter the waiting time of CTS is, the higher the priority of CTS is. We analyze the performance of DACW-MAC and evaluate it through extensive simulations. The simulation results show that DACW-MAC can enhance the throughput of wireless networks compared with PRP-MAC.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a Throughput-aimed MAC Protocol with Quality of Service (QoS) provision (T-MAC) for cognitive Ad Hoc networks. This protocol operates based on the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) slot assignments and the power control mechanism, which can improve the QoS provision and network throughput. Our simulation results show that the T-MAC protocol can efficiently increase the network throughput and reduce the access delay.

Abstract:A passive optical network (PON) scheme based on optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) for the downstream traffics is proposed and analyzed in detail. In the PON, the downstream traffics are broadcasted by OCDM technology to guarantee the security, while the upstream traffics pass through the same optical fiber by the common time division multiple access (TDMA) technology to decrease the cost. This schemes is denoted as OCDM/TDMA-PON, which can be applied to an optical access network (OAN) with full services on demand, such as Internet protocol, video on demand, tele-presence and high quality audio. The proposed OCDM/TDMA-PON scheme combines advantages of PON, TDMA, and OCDM technology. Simulation results indicate that the designed scheme improves the OAN performance, and enhances flexibility and scalability of the system.

Abstract:The Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) has become a dominant piece of technology to carry wireless traffic for Internet of Things (IoT). The next-generation high-density WLAN scenario is very suitable for the development trend of the industrial wireless sensor network. However, in the high-density deployed WLAN scenarios, the access efficiency is low due to severe collisions, and the interference is diffused due to the scattered locations of the parallel access stations (STAs), which results in low area throughput, i.e., low spatial reuse gain. A spatial group-based multi-user full-duplex orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) (GFDO) multiple access control (MAC) protocol is proposed. Firstly, the STAs in the network are divided into several spatial groups according to the neighbor channel sensing ability. Secondly, a two-level buffer state report (BSR) information collection mechanism based on P-probability is designed. Initially, intra-group STAs report their BSR information to the group header using low transmission power. After that, group headers report both their BSR information collected from their members and inter-group interference information to the access point (AP). Finally, AP schedules two spatial groups without mutual interference to carry on multi-user full duplex transmission on the subchannels in cascading mode. The closed-form formulas are theoretically derived, including the number of uplink STAs successfully collected by AP, the network throughput and area throughput under saturated traffic. The simulation results show that the theoretical analysis coincide with the simulation results. The system throughput of the GFDO protocol is 16.8% higher than that of EnFD-OMAX protocol.

Abstract:This paper proposed an architecture and design of the core MAC controller for the Ethernet PON, integrating both the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) hardware and the embedded software applications on a System on Chip (SoC). Most control operations including encryption, authentication, classification and arbitration are implemented with FPGA, while particular scheduling tasks such as registration and dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) are performed on an embedded Linux platform. To achieve the network efficiency and improve the QoS performance of the EPON system, a novel DBA algorithm based on sliding window mechanism was presented. The proposed scheme is demonstrated to be fitted in a relatively low cost FPGA, which provides valuable experiences for MAC controller development.
