Abstract:In this paper, we propose an asynchronous multi-channel MAC (AM-MAC) protocol for cooperative network, which keeps nodes aware of all the state information and introduce cooperative transmission into asynchronous multi-channel environment. This Multi-channel MAC design adds a helper-confirm phase in channel negotiation process and also different information tables and learning methods. As we analyzed the properly designed MAC frames and handshake schemes make it perfect in data channel selection and helper confirmation. Simulations have shown that the network throughput of AM-MAC is much higher than none-cooperative multi-channel MAC protocol when causing less dropped packets.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA-PON) has being considered as a promising solution for next generation PONs due to its high spectral efficiency and flexible bandwidth allocation scheme. In order to take full advantage of these merits of OFDMA-PON, a high-efficiency medium access control (MAC) dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) scheme is needed. In this paper, we propose two DBA algorithms which can act on two different stages of a resource allocation process. To achieve higher bandwidth utilization and ensure the equity of ONUs, we propose a DBA algorithm based on frame structure for the stage of physical layer mapping. Targeting the global quality of service (QoS) of OFDMA-PON, we propose a full-range DBA algorithm with service level agreement (SLA) and class of service (CoS) for the stage of bandwidth allocation arbitration. The performance of the proposed MAC DBA scheme containing these two algorithms is evaluated using numerical simulations. Simulations of a 15Gbps network with 1024 sub-carriers and 32 ONUs demonstrate the maximum network throughput of 14.87Gbps and the maximum packet delay of 1.45ms for the highest priority CoS under high load condition.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an important technique to support high speed transmission of broadband traffic in wireless networks, especially broadband wireless local area networks (LANs). Based on OFDM, a new multiple access scheme, called OFDM-TDMA with subcarrier allocation (OFDM-TDMA/SA), is proposed in this paper. It provides more flexibility in resource allocation than other multiple access schemes such as OFDM-TDMA, OFDM-frequency division multiple access (OFDM-FDMA), and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). With OFDM-TDMA/SA, a medium access control (MAC) is designed for broadband wireless LANs. It optimizes bit allocation in subcarriers so that maximum bits are transmitted in each OFDM symbol under a frequency selective fading environment. The OFDM-TDMA/SA MAC protocol also supports three classes of traffic such as guaranteed, controlled-load, and best effort services. Based on the optimum subcarrier bit-allocation algorithm and considering heterogeneous QoS constraints of multimedia traffic, a hierarchical scheduling scheme is proposed to determine the subcarriers and time slots in which a mobile terminal can transmit packets. In such a way, the OFDM-TDMA/SA MAC protocol significantly increases system throughput in a frequency selective fading environment and guarantees QoS of multimedia traffic. Computer simulation is carried out to evaluate the performance of the OFDM-TDMA/SA MAC protocol. Results show that the new MAC protocol outperforms other MAC protocols for OFDM-based wireless LANs.

Abstract:We propose two dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithms by considering three dimensions, i.e., time slot, subcarrier, and bit allocation, to minimize the transmitting power of optical network units (ONUs) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access passive optical networks (OFDMA-PONs). In the first proposed algorithm, we make use of the three-dimensional DBA algorithm from wireless OFDM, modify it according to the characteristics of the fiber channel, and apply it to upstream access in OFDMA-PONs to reduce the transmitting power of ONUs. In order to further minimize the total transmitting power, we propose the second algorithm by allocating the subcarrier and bit in the same procedure. The complexity of the two proposed algorithms was evaluated by polynomial time. From simulation results, the transmitting power of ONUs under a certain bit error rate is reduced by similar to 30% and similar to 50% using the first and the second proposed algorithms, respectively, compared with the traditional two-dimensional DBA algorithm in OFDMA-PONs.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel architecture for the SSB-ADM-based OFDM-PON system.Its downlink transmission is based on 10 Gbit/s SSB-based OFDM-4-QAM modulation,while the uplink transmission is based on 2.5 Gbit/s ASK modulation in the Time Division Multiple Access(TDMA) mode by using the other sideband retained in the downlink signals.This architecture can perfectly overcome the Rayleigh backscattering effect in the bidirectional transmission.When the backscattering effect is considered,the power penalty will be <0.8 dB for downlink signals and <1.8 dB for uplink signals.

Abstract:An energy-efficient optical access network scheme based on sub-band grouping and allocating is proposed and studied for the digital filter multiple access adopted passive optical network (DFMA-PON). In this scheme, sub-bands generated in digital sdomain are grouped as band groups and properly allocated for optical network unit (ONU) transmissions to reduce the transmission time. Based on this, longer sleeping time can be provided to each ONU, and some more energy can be saved. Numerical evaluations indicate that comparing with basic DFMA-PON, significant energy is saved by the proposed scheme, and a promoted energy saving performance can be achieved by properly arranging the number of sub-bands assigned in a band group. Furthermore, the technology improvement and its impact on the performance of the scheme are also investigated. It is demonstrated that comparing with the conventional network, the proposed scheme possesses prominent energy saving potential. It can be considered as a potential solution for future energy-efficient optical access network.

Abstract:Recently orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) has been proposed in the passive optical network (PON) for downstream and upstream transmissions. Due to its powerful digital signal processing and high flexibility, OFDMA-PON has emerged as a promising candidate for the next-generation optical access networks. In this letter, we propose a cost-effective upstream scheme based on the interleaved frequency-division multiple access (IFDMA), which is a modified form of OFDMA. The IFDMA has lower peak-to-average power ratio and lower computation complexity at the transmitter, which is cost-effective for the optical network unit. Upstream IFDMA transmission is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new scheme to reduce the energy consumption of optical network units (ONUs) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical networks (OFDM PONs) by using time-domain interleaved OFDM (TI-OFDM) technique. In a conventional OFDM PON, each ONU has to process the complete downstream broadcast OFDM signal with a high sampling rate and a large FFT size to retrieve its required data, even if it employs a portion of OFDM subcarriers. However, in our scheme, the ONU only needs to sample and process one data group from the downlink TI-OFDM signal, effectively reducing the sampling rate and the FFT size of the ONU. Thus, the energy efficiency of ONUs in OFDM PONs can be greatly improved. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme. Compared to the conventional OFDM PON, our proposal can save 17.1% and 26.7% energy consumption of ONUs by halving and quartering the sampling rate and the FFT size of ONUs with the use of the TI-OFDM technology. Abstract:The introduction of OFDM into PON networks is to leverage the merits of OFDM to provide the flexibility and reduce the cost. In this paper, we present our latest works on OFDM-PON. Firstly, we propose and demonstrate a novel OFDM-PON upstream transmission architecture with traffic aggregation by orthogonal band multiplexing. The multiplexed 10Gb/s OFDM signal is collectively received. We also conduct a proof-of-concept experiment to verify the architecture. Secondly, we propose and experimentally demonstrate wavelet packet transform based OFDM (WPT-OFDM) using real-valued transforms, which enables the cost-effective intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD). Unlike conventional FFT-based OFDM, the need for cyclic prefix is eliminated due to the time-frequency localization properties of the wavelet.

Abstract:As the bitrate of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON) system is continuously increasing, how to effectively allocate the system bandwidth among the huge number of optical network units (ONUs) is one of the key problems before OFDM-PON can be practical deployed. Unlike traditional bandwidth allocation scheme, in this paper, the transmission performance of single ONU is for the first time taken into consideration and optimized. To reduce the manufacturing complexity and fully utilize the processing ability of the receivers, the system bandwidth is equally distributed to the ONUs. Bit loading is used to allocate the total transmission capacity, and power loading is used to guarantee the ONUs have balanced transmission performance even if they operate at different bitrate. In this way, a dynamic and balanced capacity allocation scheme with uniform bandwidth for OFDM-PON systems can be realized. At last, an experimental system is established to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme, and the influence that the scheme brings to the whole system is also analyzed.

Abstract:In this paper, a new architecture of the networks based on the proposed optical CDMA based on PON (OCDMA-PON) is presented, the design of the Optical Line Terminator (OLT) and the Optical Network Unit (ONU) for the OCDMA-PON are studied. The performance of networks based on the OCDMA-PON is analyzed in detail. Its bit error rate (BER) performance, networks scalability and transmission performance of such a system are studied under consideration of the multiple user interference (MUI) and the difference noise contributions. As shown in the study, the number of ONU/ONT, the channel link length, the number of available codes and the optical component characteristics deeply impact both the scalability and the transmission performance of such a system. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is feasible and that the novel design can improve the scalability and transmission performance of the optical access networks.

Abstract:In order to efficiently deliver peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic in an orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing based passive optical network (OFDM-PON) system, the NC technology has been proposed to encode P2P traffic, thus reducing the P2P traffic loads. On the other hand, different ONUs may have different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) to the OLT in the OFDM-PON system, and so applying NC to encode and delivery the P2P traffic between a high-SNR ONU and a low-SNR ONU may reduce the capacity of the link between the OLT and the high-SNR ONU. That is, the high-SNR ONU, which can apply a higher-order modulation format to receive data from the OLT, has to compromise on the low-SNR ONU to use a lower-order modulation format. In order to improve the network capacity and bandwidth utilization, hierarchical modulation (HM) is proposed to be integrated into the NC based OFDM-PON system, where the high-SNR ONU can apply a higher-order modulation format without degrading the performance of the low-SNR ONU in receiving its P2P traffic from the OLT. The NC and HM based OFDM-PON system structure in both uplink and downlink is illustrated. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed system. Also, the relation between power ratio of HM and the system performance under different network settings is discussed and analyzed via the simulations.

Abstract:This paper presents a hybrid media access control (MAC) protocol for underwater optical wireless networks (UOWNs). A new request packet is designed to dynamically allocate time slots and spreading codes based on the content of the request packet to further improve the time slot efficiency and reduce the number of handshakes. Then, a time synchronization scheme is proposed to facilitate the practical implementation of the proposed hybrid MAC protocol with respect to the clock frequency drift induced time offsets between each node and the optical access point (OAP). Numerical results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed hybrid MAC protocol compared to conventional MAC protocols in terms of average throughput and delay.
Performance Evaluation for QoS Oriented Cross Layer Optimization in OFDMA Networks

Abstract:Utility based cross layer optimization is a promising tool for wireless resource management in next generation wireless networks, which has been recently studied extensively. Numerous types of utility functions have been proposed and examined in the corresponding literature. However, the majority of the known utility functions only take a fixed mathematical form or are just based on simple combining, which can not fully exploit available network information. In this paper, we focus on a framework of QoS oriented cross layer optimization based on Adaptively Weighted Utility Functions (AWUF) in OFDMA networks. Under this framework, a sub-optimal solution is proposed, which has a potential ability to update control parameters in real-time and accommodate instantaneous QoS constrains. The simulation results revealed that the AUWF based algorithm not only achieved higher throughput, but also simultaneously reduced average queue length and packet delay under unsymmetrical traffic loads among multiple users.

Abstract:Ethernet-based Passive optical network (E-PON) is the key for next generation access networks. It must have the property of high efficiency, low cost, and support quality of service (QoS). We present a novel media access control (MAC) protocol that maximizes network efficiency by using dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm suitable for E-PON. This protocol minimizes packet delay and delay variation for high priority traffic to ensure QoS. Simulation results show excellent network throughput. Simulation results also show low packet delay and packet delay variation for high priority traffic compare with traditional MAC protocol of E-PON. When the network performs ranging, this protocol ensures zero interruption of high priority traffic, such as audio or video applications.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to improve the energy efficiency of wavelength division multiplexing - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing - passive optical networks (WDM-OFDM-PONs). By using an N × M opto-mechanic switch in optical line terminal (OLT), an OFDM modulation module is shared by several channels to deliver data to multiple users with low traffic demands during non-peak hours of the day, thus greatly reducing the number of operating devices and minimizing the energy consumption of the OLT. An experiment utilizing one OFDM modulation module to serve three optical network units (ONUs) in a WDM-OFDM-PON is performed to verify the feasibility of our proposal. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation show that the proposed scheme can achieve a saving of 23.6% in the energy consumption of the OFDM modulation modules compared to conventional WDM-OFDM-PON.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to reduce the energy consumption of optical line terminal (OLT) in wavelength division multiplexing - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-OFDM-PONs). In our scheme, a wireless communication technique, termed layered modulation, is introduced to maximize the transmission capacity of OFDM modulation module in the OLT by multiplexing data from different ONU groups with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) margins onto the same subcarriers. With adaptive and dynamic subcarrier and layer allocation, several ONU groups with low traffic demands can share one OFDM modulation module to deliver their data during non-peak hours of a day, thus greatly reducing the number of running devices and minimizing the energy consumption of the OLT. Numerical calculation shows that an energy efficiency improvement of 28.3% in the OLT can be achieved by using proposed scheme compared to the conventional WDM-OFDM-PON.
