Abstract:Double-slit imaging is widely used for verifying the resolution of high-resolution and super-resolution microscopies. However, due to the fabrication limits, the slit width is generally non-negligible, which can affect the claimed resolution. In this paper we theoretically calculate the electromagnetic field distribution inside and near the metallic double slit using waveguide mode expansion method and acquire the far-field image by vectorial Fourier optics. We find that the slit width has minimal influence when the illuminating light is polarized parallel to the slits. In this case, the claimed resolution should be based on the center-to-center distance of the double-slit.

Abstract:The invention of the optical microscope is significant to the development of many aspects of science and technology,including novel materials,life sciences and medicine,for its superiorities in resolving fine structures.But,restrained by the Abbe diffraction limit,the best-resolving capability that can be obtained by conven-tional linear optical microscopy is～200 nm laterally and～500 nm axially using an objective lens(numerical aperture=1.4)at 550 nm wavelength.Over the past decades,to break the resolution limit and meet the increasing demand for super-resolution ability,numerous attempts were made,and fruitful developments emerged[1-8].Among all the approaches,one significant class is based on the integrated spatial frequency engineering to extend the collectable spatial frequency region via spatial frequency shift(SFS)method[3-13].Through the combination of SFS with spe-cially designed photonic chips,highly sophisticated optical sys-tems in traditional super-resolution instruments are moved out.

Abstract:Optical microscopy is an essential tool for exploring the structures and activities of cells and tissues. To break the limit of resolution caused by diffraction, researchers have made continuous advances and innovations to improve the resolution of optical microscopy since the 1990s. These contributions, however, still make sub-10 nm imaging an obstacle. Here, we name a series of technologies as modulated illumination localization microscopy (MILM), which makes ultrahigh-resolution imaging practical. Besides, we review the recent progress since 2017 when MINFLUX was proposed and became the inspiration and foundation for the follow-up development of MILM. This review divides MILM into two types: point-scanning and wide-field. The schematics, principles and future research directions of MILM are discussed elaborately.

Abstract:The diffraction limit substantially impedes the resolution of the conventional optical microscope. CAN MAXWELL'S FISH EYE LENS REALLY GIVE PERFECT IMAGING? PART III. A CAREFUL RECONSIDERATION OF THE ``EVIDENCE FOR SUBWAVELENGTH IMAGING WITH POSITIVE REFRACTION''

Abstract:Many scientists do not believe that Maxwell's fish eye mirror (MFEM) can provide perfect imaging even if there is a drain array around the imaging points. However, one microwave experiment found a case where a 0.2 lambda resolution could be achieved in an MFEM experiment [1]. In this paper, we show that the MFEM cannot resolve two imaging points at such a subwavelength resolution in most cases even in the presence of a drain array, and an extraordinary case of subwavelength imaging requires a particular phase difference between two coherent sources. Both numerical simulations and experimental results show that the phase difference of two subwavelength-distanced coherent sources greatly influences the field distribution around the drain array. In very few cases (when the phase difference of the two sources is chosen to be a very specific value), we might resolve the image points in the drain array under the assumption that the power absorbed by the scanning cable on the left side of the drain array should be symmetric to that on the right side of the drain array [1]. However, in most cases, we cannot obtain a super-resolution imaging, as other drains around the image points will greatly influence the imaging. We also note that the experiment assumed that the power absorbed by the scanning cable on the left and the right sides of the drain array is symmetric is not correct for the experiment reported in [1], as the drain array itself is not symmetric. The highly non-symmetric distribution of the absorbed power is also verified by our simulation and experimental results. The experimental "result" of resolving two image peaks could potentially be recovered using only a single image peak, which demonstrates the wrong assumption of mirror symmetry. Comparisons and comments on perfect passive drains, "super-resolution" in a spherical geodesic waveguide, and time reverse imaging are also given.

Abstract:Fluorescence emission difference microscopy (FED) obtains resolution-enhanced images by subtracting acquired solid and doughnut confocal images. Because of the mismatch of the outer contours of the two subtraction components, negative values are inevitable in the conventional FED method, giving rise to deformations. In this study, by using a saturation effect, we obtain imaging results with a profile-extended solid and center-shrunken doughnut point spread function. Owing to the nonlinear effect, two better-matched saturated images not only eliminate the deformations, but also enhance the resolving ability and signal to noise ratio compared to conventional FED. Simulations based on the saturated model of rhodamine 6G, as well as experiments on biological samples, are presented to verify the capability of the proposed concept, while experimental results show the unprecedented resolving ability of the saturated FED method.

Abstract:Fluorescence emission diffraction microscopy (FED) has proven to be an effective sub-diffraction-limited imaging method. In this paper, we theoretically propose a method to further enhance the resolving capability of FED. Using a coated mirror and only one objective lens, this method achieves not only the same axial resolution as 4Pi microscopy but also a higher lateral resolution. The point spread function (PSF) of our method is isotropic. According to calculations, the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the isotropic FED’s PSF is 0.17λ along all three spatial directions. Compared with confocal microscopy, the lateral resolution is improved 0.7-fold, and the axial resolution is improved 3.1-fold. Simulation tests also demonstrate this method’s advantage over traditional microscopy techniques.

Abstract:Optical microscope has been giving impetus to the development of modern technology. As the advancement of these techniques, high resolution microscopy becomes crucial in biological and material researches. However, the diffraction limit restricts the resolution of conventional microscopy. In 1968, confocal microscopy, the first pointwise scanning superresolution method, appeared. It improves the imaging resolution, enhances the contrast, and thus breaks through the diffraction limit. Since then many superresolution methods have come into being, among which the pointwise scanning superresolution method earns reputation for its high imaging resolution and contrast. The stimulated emission depletion microscopy becomes the most prominent method with an achievable resolution of about 2.4 nm and then widely used. Besides, the newly developed fluorescence emission difference microscopy (FED) and the saturated absorption competition microscopy (SAC) have their advantages of non-constraint on fluorescent dyes, low saturated beam power, simplified optical setups, while they achieve a resolution of lower than /6. Further explorations of FED will be keen on vivo biological observations by using it, while that of SAC can concentrate on enhancing the resolution on a nanoscale and reducing the signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, the Airyscan technique in which a detector array is used for image acquisition, can serve as a complementary tool to further enhance the imaging quality of pointwise scanning superresolution method. The detector-array enables both the narrowed size of pinhole and the increasing of the acquired signal intensity by 1.84 folds. The other methods, e.g. superoscillation lens and high-index resolution enhancement by scattering, have the potentialities to obtain superresolved image in material science or deep tissues. After being developed in the past three decades, the superresolution methods now encounter a new bottleneck. Further improvement of the current methods is aimed at imaging depth, and being used more practically and diversely. In this review, we detailedly describe the above pointwise scanning superresolution methods, and explain their principles and techniques. In addition, the deficiencies and potentialities of these methods are presented in this review. Finally, we compare the existing methods and envision the next generation of the pointwise scanning superresolution methods.
On subwavelength imaging of Maxwell's fish eye lens

Abstract:Both explicit analysis and FEM numerical simulation are used to analyze the field distribution of a line current in the so-called Maxwell's fish eye lens [bounded with a perfectly electrical conductor (PEC) boundary]. We show that such a 2D Maxwell's fish eye lens cannot give perfect imaging due to the fact that high order modes of the object field can hardly reach the image point in Maxwell's fish eye lens. If only zeroth order mode is excited, a subwavelength image of a sharp object may be achieved in some cases, however, its spot-size is larger than the spot size of the initial object field. The image resolution is determined by the field spot size of the image corresponding to the zeroth order component of the object field. Our explicit analysis consists very well with the FEM results for a fish eye lens. Time-domain simulation is also given to verify our conclusion. Multi-point imaging for a single object point is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We use both FEM (finite element method) and FDTD (finite difference time domain method) to simulate the field distribution in Maxwell's fish eye lens with one or more passive drains around the image point. We use the same Maxwell's fish eye lens structure as the one used in recent microwave experiment [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1007.2530" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1007.2530">arXiv:1007.2530</a>]: Maxwell's fish eye lens bounded by PEC (perfect electric conductor) is inserted between two parallel PEC plates (as a waveguide structure). Our simulation results indicate that if one uses an active coaxial cable as the object and set an array of passive drains around the image region, what one obtains is not an image of the object but only multiple spots resembling the array of passive drains. The resolution of Maxwell's fish eye is finite even with such passive drains at the image locations. We also found that the subwavelength spot around the passive drain is due to the local field enhancement of the metal tip of the drain rather than the fish eye medium or the ability of the drain in extracting waves.

Abstract:It has been shown that negative refraction makes a perfect lens. However, with little loss, the imaging functionality will be strongly compromised. Later on, it was proved that positive refraction from Maxwell's fish-eye lens can also makes a perfect lens. However, strong debating happens on the introduced drain problem at the imaging position. In this work, we for the first time find that a solid immersion Maxwell's fish-eye lens could be used for super-resolution imaging. We find that it is due to the perfect focusing and total reflection at the outer interface, such that a super-resolution image is formed at the required position in the air background. This simple mechanism will also be valid for other absolute instruments and more versatile super-imaging systems will be anticipated.

Elastic wave imaging with Maxwell's fish-eye lens

Abstract:In this paper, a modified Maxwell's fish-eye lens is proposed in order to achieve super-resolution imaging. This lens possesses elevated refractive index profile compared with the traditional Maxwell's fish-eye lens. The refractive index profile is achieved with variable thickness configuration defined in a sheet plate structure, to realise desired changes in refractive indices. The wave propagation behaviours and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) are obtained from numerical simulations and experimental studies at the focal region of the lens. Super-resolution imaging is observed in a broadband frequency scope, with the FWHM around 0.2{\lambda} from 5 to 10 kHz. This work provides a straightforward and flexible approach to the engineering of the MFEL imaging characteristics and energy distributions for related applications.

Abstract:Mirror-closed dielectric lenses such as Maxwell's fisheye lens have been recently discussed to have unique light focusing capacity. The key issue for this lens is to make a perfect deep subwavelength drain which is able to absorb the entire wavefronts emitted by the source. In this work the authors proposed two methods to solve this problem and designed small size drains using time reversed scattering and transformation optics. At the image position, deep subwavelength focusing spots were achieved in a closed dielectric-embedded lens by these drains. The transformed drain could work at arbitrary wavelength and polarization. Our results showed the critical role of an attenuating drain in the imaging process of a Maxwell fisheye lens and gave technical approaches for their implementation. The general methods developed here may serve to design other interesting electromagnetic devices.

Abstract:The theoretical foundations of superresolution imaging of nanoscale objects with the Veselago/Pendry Superlens are reviewed from a microwave engineering viewpoint. Insights into the dynamic response of the Superlens, gained from both theoretical and numerical studies, are presented. The results provide new perspectives on the physics of evanescent field transmission and the key factors that limit the resolution of such a lens even in the absence of losses and nonlinearities. The proposed spectral waveguide model greatly simplifies the analysis-both theoretical and numerical-as well as the design of superresolution imaging systems. Full-wave electromagnetic simulations of evanescent wave transmission by the lens, performed with the waveguide model in both time and frequency domains, are validated against theoretical and computational predictions found in the literature.

Abstract:On the basis of narrow-band filtered annular light-cone illumination with high numerical aperture, a new far-field super-resolution optical microscopic imaging method is proposed, and its physical model is established. Using the scalar diffraction theory, the formula of diffraction intensity in the image plane is derived for annular light-cone illumination and imaging under different numerical apertures. The diffraction patterns are further simulated through the Matlab program, which demonstrates that such a method may significantly increase the microscopic imaging resolution. Experiments have been carried out on a self-build microscopic system, showing that a resolution can be achieved to be better than 150 nm under 450 nm light wavelength and 1.125-1.25 annular numerical apertures. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions, thus proving the feasibility of this microscopic imaging method.

Abstract:In this paper, a Maxwell fisheye lens (MFL) for spin waves (SWs) focusing on a ferromagnetic film was presented via micromagnetic simulation. The Maxwell fisheye lens with graded refractive index distribution, achieved with gradient saturation magnetization, is designed to manipulate the wavefront of spin waves. The simulation results show that sub-wavelength focusing can be achieved by means of MFL with appropriate chosen parameters. Furthermore, simulation results also prove that the focusing properties of MFL can be tuned by external magnetic field. The MFL would be promising device for SWs focusing and wavefront manipulation.

Abstract:Lightweight, miniaturized optical imaging systems are vastly anticipated in these fields of aerospace exploration, industrial vision, consumer electronics, and medical imaging. However, conventional optical techniques are intricate to downscale as refractive lenses mostly rely on phase accumulation. Metalens, composed of subwavelength nanostructures that locally control light waves, offers a disruptive path for small-scale imaging systems. Recent advances in the design and nanofabrication of dielectric metalenses have led to some high-performance practical optical systems. This review outlines the exciting developments in the aforementioned area whilst highlighting the challenges of using dielectric metalenses to replace conventional optics in miniature optical systems. After a brief introduction to the fundamental physics of dielectric metalenses, the progress and challenges in terms of the typical performances are introduced. The supplementary discussion on the common challenges hindering further development is also presented, including the limitations of the conventional design methods, difficulties in scaling up, and device integration. Furthermore, the potential approaches to address the existing challenges are also deliberated.

Abstract:Abstract The far‐field resolution of traditional optical imaging systems is restricted by the Abbe diffraction limit, a direct result of the wave nature of light. To break this limit, one applicable approach is to reduce the effective size of the point‐spread‐function (PSF). In the past decades, great endeavors have been made to produce an effective super‐resolution PSF by exploiting different mechanisms, including optical nonlinearities and structured light illumination. However, it is difficult to apply these methods to objects at far distance miles away. Here, the study proposes a new approach to achieving super‐resolution imaging for far‐distance objects by utilizing angular magnification. To this end, a new class of metalenses with angular magnification is first theoretically and experimentally validated and demonstrated. Both theoretical and experimental results have demonstrated a more than twofold enhancement beyond the traditional angular‐resolution limit. The proposed approach is of promising potential in the applications of super‐resolution telescopes and remote sensing.
