Abstract:In this study, a temperature imaging method based on a magnetic nanoparticle thermometer is proposed and evaluated. We first constructed a new model for finding the single temperature of magnetic nanoparticles with core size distribution. Specifically, we employed an air-core coil as a magnetic probe, which measured the magnetization of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). We then constructed a relation between the output signal of an air-core coil in the direction of the geometric center axis and the magnetization of the MNPs in a 2-D imaging area based on the magnetic dipole theory. Once this was achieved, we established a temperature imaging model by utilizing Green function as the convolution kernel, which describes the distance relationship between MNPs and the geometric center axis of the air-cored coil. After this, we calculated the harmonic distribution by a deconvolution algorithm and determined the temperature of the MNPs at different positions based on the model of harmonic amplitude and temperature, resulting in the 2-D temperature distribution. The simulation proved that the model and method of 2-D temperature distribution measurement could theoretically be acceptable. In the experiment, the 2-D temperature distribution of multi-chip power LEDs was measured accurately by a homemade system, thus demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed method for temperature imaging. This method is expected to provide a new solution for measuring the internal temperature distribution of opaque objects under extreme conditions.

Abstract:Real-time measurement of temperature field is an important but very difficult problem in metallurgy, welding and various hot working process. The authors proposed a colorimetric method for measuring temperature field with ICCD as sensor. Two filters with different wavelength are mounted on a high speed rotating disk in front of the ICCD, so that two images can be taken by ICCD quickly and successively for the colorimetric estimation. Temperature range which can be detected by the designed device is 1100 approximately 1600 K. The measuring time for one field is less than 120 ms. Due to the inherent law of the method, the distance between the object and device has no effect on the measured results, therefore it does not need calibration for measurement at different position, which is one of the great advantages of the proposed method.

Abstract:Temperature distribution is an important process parameter of steel plates during electromagnetic induction heating treatment. This study uses the digital image correlation method to develop an effective non-contact temperature measurement that allows obtaining valuable information about the temperature value of a high temperature steel plate specimen and analyzing its temperature distribution. A principle of thermal radiation temperature measurement based on the color chagre couled device (CCD) technology was introduced. The image processing system encapsulates the image update module, form mode module, image event module and temperature analysis module. The error analysis and temperature calibration were carried out to make sure the error deviation of the measurement system was within a small range. The temperature distribution of B1500HS at high temperature was analyzed by the designed measurement system which was in good agreement with the result from Raynger 3i Plus temperature gun, indicating that the measurement system based on image processing basically meets the requirements of temperature distribution measurement of a high temperature steel plate, and provides an important reference for a high temperature steel plate in non-contact temperature distribution measurement.

Abstract:The visible light radiated by some high temperature objects (less than 1200 degrees C) almost lies in the red and infrared waves. It will interfere with structured light projected on a forging surface if phase measurement profilometry (PMP) is used to measure the shapes of objects. In order to obtain a clear deformed pattern image, a 3D measurement method based on blue sinusoidal structured light is proposed in this present work. Moreover, a method for filtering deformed pattern images is presented for correction of the unwrapping phase. Blue sinusoidal phase-shifting fringe pattern images are projected on the surface by a digital light processing (DLP) projector, and then the deformed patterns are captured by a 3-CCD camera. The deformed pattern images are separated into R, G and B color components by the software. The B color images filtered by a low-pass filter are used to calculate the fringe order. Consequently, the 3D shape of a high temperature object is obtained by the unwrapping phase and the calibration parameter matrixes of the DLP projector and 3-CCD camera. The experimental results show that the unwrapping phase is completely corrected with the filtering method by removing the high frequency noise from the first harmonic of the B color images. The measurement system can complete the measurement in a few seconds with a relative error of less than 1 : 1000.

Abstract:The measurement performance of a CCD-based pyrometer system using a three-color method was evaluated for scientific and engineering metrology. The relationships between the system parameters (exposure time and sensor gain) and the intensity measurements in an integrating sphere experiment were determined for a specific CCD sensor. The pyrometer system uses the three-color method based on the intensity ratio without geometry calibrations. The field measurement characteristics and the effectiveness of coupling the three-color channels were investigated in terms of the temperature measurement uniformity, temperature sensitivity and temperature range of the pyrometer system in standard blackbody tests. The results showed that the temperature non-uniformity is not proportional to the intensity non-uniformity and is in the range of 0.13–2.14%. The relative temperature sensitivities of intensity ratios for different channel combinations are different, which may provide a way to improve the measurement results. The temperature range bandwidth for object with a non-uniform temperature distribution varies from 190 to 270K for this specific CCD-based pyrometer. The performance evaluation conclusions for the system with this specific CCD sensor are general and applicable for pyrometer systems using other CCD sensors.

Abstract:Spectral emissivity is one of the most critical thermophysical properties of a material for heat design and analysis. Especially in the traditional radiation thermometry, normal spectral emissivity is very important. We developed a prototype instrument based upon an integral blackbody method to measure material's spectral emissivity at elevated temperatures. An optimized commercial variable-high-temperature blackbody, a high speed linear actuator, a linear pyrometer, and an in-house designed synchronization circuit was used to implemented the system. A sample was placed in a crucible at the bottom of the blackbody furnace, by which the sample and the tube formed a simulated reference blackbody which had an effective total emissivity greater than 0.985. During the measurement, a pneumatic cylinder pushed a graphite rode and then the sample crucible to the cold opening within hundreds of microseconds. The linear pyrometer was used to monitor the brightness temperature of the sample surface, and the corresponding opto-converted voltage was fed and recorded by a digital multimeter. To evaluate the temperature drop of the sample along the pushing process, a physical model was proposed. The tube was discretized into several isothermal cylindrical rings, and the temperature of each ring was measurement. View factors between sample and rings were utilized. Then, the actual surface temperature of the sample at the end opening was obtained. Taking advantages of the above measured voltage signal and the calculated actual temperature, normal spectral emissivity under the that temperature point was obtained. Graphite sample at 1300 degrees C was measured to prove the validity of the method.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple methodology to perform a high temperature coupled thermo-mechanical test using ultra-high temperature ceramic material specimens (UHTCs), which are equipped with chemical composition gratings sensors (CCGs). The methodology also considers the presence of coupled loading within the response provided by the CCG sensors. The theoretical strain of the UHTCs specimens calculated with this technique shows a maximum relative error of 2.15% between the analytical and experimental data. To further verify the validity of the results from the tests, a Finite Element (FE) model has been developed to simulate the temperature, stress and strain fields within the UHTC structure equipped with the CCG. The results show that the compressive stress exceeds the material strength at the bonding area, and this originates a failure by fracture of the supporting structure in the hot environment. The results related to the strain fields show that the relative error with the experimental data decrease with an increase of temperature. The relative error is less than 15% when the temperature is higher than 200 °C, and only 6.71% at 695 °C.

Abstract:A method to simultaneously measure two-dimensional temperature and emissivity distributions on high-temperature diffuse surfaces is developed using an auxiliary light source. The high-temperature diffuse surface is irradiated from the hemispherical space with the auxiliary light source switched “on” or “off.” Two images of the effective radiation intensity are obtained in quick succession for the two states to determine the temperature and emissivity distributions. The measurement method and uncertainty models show that the effect of the unknown emissivity on the accuracy of the temperature field measurement can be eliminated. The optical pyrometer is a color charge coupled device (CCD) sensor with a quartz lamp array used as the auxiliary light source to illustrate the measurement method. An oxidized W–Ni–Fe alloy sample is heated at high temperatures of 600–1000 °C by a 700 W induction-heating device. The distributions of the effective radiation intensities from the sample surface during the “on” and “off” states of the lamp array are measured in the three color channels (R, G, and B channels) to calculate the temperature and emissivity distributions. The temperature measurement uncertainties are less than 4 °C for a temperature range of 600–900 °C. The temperature measurements are experimentally validated by the thermocouple method only with a small temperature difference. The emissivities calculated from the three color channels are very close with a range of 0.855–0.957. The relative uncertainties in the emissivities for channels R and G are less than 2.0%, while the relative uncertainty for channel B data was higher at 2.8% and 7.5% due to lower measurement signals in channel B. This analysis may provide a useful method for measuring the temperatures of high-temperature diffuse surfaces by successfully compensating for the effects of unknown or changing emissivities.

Abstract:The principle of bicolorimetric method and the calibration method of Color-CCD(Charge Coupled Device)Temperature- Measurement System based on Image Processing are presented in this paper.According to the experimental results,the optimal CCD- setting is chosen.The relation between bicolorimetric-method coefficient and gray,monochromatic radiant intensity and brightness are established separately.Two methods are employed to calculate temperature.The calculated results show that the relative errors are small by these methods.It is a fundamental work for the flame temperature measurement.

Abstract:With the development of aerospace and fusion engineering, understanding the mechanical behavior of materials under high-temperature conditions has become increasingly important. However, few studies are devoted to the ultra-high temperature range of 2000-3000 degrees C. In this study, with the aim of developing non-contact measuring techniques of mechanical deformation under ultra-high temperature, a high heat flux (similar to 300 MW) comprehensive experimental platform is established, which includes a vacuum chamber, a three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) system, infrared radiation thermometers and an electron beam heating system. Using the electron beam heating technique, the tungsten specimen can be heated to over 3000 degrees C. Owing to the use of a vacuum chamber, the thermally induced airflow disturbance at high temperature can be completely removed. Tantalum carbide (TaC) powder is chosen as the speckle material and speckle fabrication technology is developed to adapt ultra-high temperatures under vacuum conditions. In order to suppress the blackbody radiation at high temperature, three schemes based on blue light sources, self-radiating light sources and a dual wavelength optical filter technique are designed for three temperature ranges from room temperature to 3067 degrees C. Afterwards, full-field thermal deformation of the tungsten specimen above 3000 degrees C was determined based on the above strategies using the 3D-DIC technique. The feasibility and accuracy of the proposed methods are verified by comparing the measurement results with the thermal expansion strain data and model from available databases and literature. The standard deviations in different temperature intervals are 50 mu epsilon for 25-1200 degrees C, 100-200 mu epsilon for 1200-1800 degrees C and less than 500 mu epsilon for 1800-3067 degrees C. The proposed methods and technologies are expected to lay a foundation for further developments in strain field measurements at ultra-high temperature.

Abstract:The radiation temperature measurement system was constructed by color camera and multispectral camera. The blackbody furnace was used to conduct the temperature calibration experiment, and the calibration data were used to obtain a temperature measurement model based on BP neural networks. The reliability of the temperature measurement model was verified by the temperature measurement experiment of a candle flame, and the results showed that the accuracy of the multispectral imaging temperature measurement system was higher than the color camera temperature measurement system. For the problem of insufficient spatial resolution of conventional radiometric temperature measurement system, a microscopic temperature measurement system was established using a hot stage microscope (HSM) and a multispectral imaging camera. The combustion process of single petroleum coke particles inside the high-temperature hot stage was recorded. The temperature distribution on the surface of petroleum coke particles and the temperature change process with time were obtained.

Abstract:Many advances in the thermal sciences depend on accurate determination of three-dimensional temperature distribution. Previous measurements by thermocouples and pyrometers were mainly restricted to time-average "point" measurements of temperature. In this paper, a model to measure the three-dimensional temperature distribution according to the flame image captured by CCD camera is studied numerically. The formation of the flame image is considered as two stages: radiation transfer in the participating medium and the optical imaging process through the lens of the camera. The inverse analysis based on Monte Carlo method and the optical model of the flame image are introduced to describe these two stages respectively. The flame of the pulverized coal is considered as a three-dimensional, absorbing, emitting, anisotropically scattering medium and full Of CO2, N-2 and carbon particles. In the temperature reconstruction case, eight CCD cameras are located on the front, back, left and right surfaces of the cube with 0.4mx0.4mx0.4m size. The temperature reconstruction equations are ill-posed linear system of equations. LSQR (Least Square QR-factorization) and damping LSQR have been used for solving the ill-posed equations. For an assumed temperature profile, the numerical simulation results show the reconstruction errors are maintained at the lower levels under different measurement errors and temperature near the center of the cube can be reconstructed well even under large measurement errors.

Abstract:In this article, we reviewed several existing techniques that were capable of detecting local temperatures in the range of 2000–3500 K in a contact manner. These techniques included several non-standard thermocouples, Seger cones and ultrasonic meters. In particular, ultrasonic meters made of tungsten (W) wires were proven to be working well in nuclear plant for detecting the central temperature of reaction zone. We also presented two alternative approaches. One of them was a kind of single-metal-based thermal sensor made from W, Mo and Ta wires, which utilized the size effect of Seebeck coefficient and theoretically applicable in contact mode measurement up to 3500 K. The other was a kind of detectors with micro-/nano-patterns, which utilized the size effect of surface melting point of bulky materials. This work should shed light on measurement approaches for ultrahigh temperatures in a variety of practical applications. Graphical abstract

Abstract:Synchronous measurement of temperature and deformation at elevated temperatures is highly critical, yet challenging in evaluating mechanical properties of thermal protection systems. An ultraviolet (UV) imaging system is proposed to obtain noncontact, in situ, synchronous, and full-field temperature and deformation. The established system consists of a monochromatic UV illumination with a bandpass filter for radiation suppressing, a UV CCD camera for image capturing, and an infrared pyrometer for temperature recording. Additionally, an improved monochromatic radiation pyrometry method is proposed, while a deformation measuring method using the UV digital image correlation (UV-DIC) and natural textures-generated speckle is introduced. Furthermore, through camera calibration at room temperature and real-time exposure time adjusted at elevated temperatures, the influence of reflection on radiation pyrometry and unfiltered radiation on DIC analysis is eliminated. Synchronous temperature and deformation fields of C/SiC subjected to flame heating are experimentally measured with a temperature range of 500°C-1500°C, and results demonstrate the efficacy and potential of the proposed system and method. Finally, the importance of exposure time on balancing the light intensity of radiation and reflection is also discussed.

Measuring Arc Temperature Distribution and Its Time-Evolution Based on Relative Intensity Method

Abstract:Temperature distribution and its time evolution are fundamental physics of arcs occurring during breaking process in electro-mechanic devices, which largely determine contact erosion. Aimed to the highly fluctuating switching arc, we implemented an optical system based on relatively strength of two individual spectrum emitted by the same excited atoms inside the plasma. Light emitted from arc is firstly split into two same beams by using a triangular prism. Then, the beams pass through two narrow-band optical filters with different central wavelengths. Finally, the filtered arcs are projected to the CMOS sensor of a high-speed camera. An algorithm based on relative intensity of two spectrum is developed to calculate the temperature on each pixels after image correction. Test results for typical arcs are also shown.

Abstract:A sapphire optical fiber blackbody radiation sensor based on the high-temperature multilayer structure of wolfram and aluminum oxide has been developed. Through the analysis of Planck's law, the linear relationship between the temperature and the square root of the voltage is theoretically deduced. Radio frequency magnetron sputtering method is used to sputter and deposit high-temperature wolfram metal film and aluminum oxide film on sapphire fiber. In order to meet the needs of real-time temperature measurement, an online acquisition system of optical signals is designed to complete the demodulation and storage of signals. The high-temperature experiment results show that the temperature response sensitivity is 0.00113 V-1/2/degrees C between 300 degrees C and 1750 degrees C, and it can work stably for more than 10 h. The sensor is calibrated in the metrology institute, where a maximum quoted error of 0.84% within a range between 900 degrees C and 1600 degrees C is proven. Compared with the traditional high-temperature measurement method, the sensor has the advantages of compact structure, antielectromagnetic interference, large measuring range, and good linearity, which can be widely used in the sensing and measurement of extreme high-temperature environments, such as aeroengine tail injection temperature monitoring and combustion chamber temperature monitoring of aeroengine simulation test benches.

Abstract:Continuous casting process is used for the solidification of molten steel into semi-finished shapes. Due to lack of reliable sensors online, manual monitoring was often essential to cooling control, which was time consuming and inefficient. This paper proposes an approach to automatically monitor high-temperature casting strand based on radiation thermometry, with the help of CCD (charge coupled device) camera and digital image processing technology. The bicolorimetric temperature measurement method is introduced in detail, as well as the working principle of CCD. Programs developed by Visual C++ 6.0 complete the acquisition, processing, calculation and visualization of casting strand image data. Besides, some experiment of temperature test was carried out for bloom casting (section size of 260 mm×300 mm) in a domestic steel plant so as to verify the monitoring model. Consequently, the purpose for monitoring casting strand is achieved, which is beneficial to cooling control in the process of continuous casting.
