Abstract:The startup error of fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) in north-seeking is the error caused by the zero-bias drift of FOG caused by drastic change of the temperature in the starting process. The start-up error significantly increases north-seeking error during the cold startup phase compared to the stable phase, which prolongs the effective north-seeking time. Through the analysis of the factors affecting the temperature drift of FOG, the mul-ti-parameter linear model was established by empirical mode decomposition (EMD), autoregressive-moving average (ARMA) modeling and Kalman filtering to realize a temperature drift compensation method applied to FOG north-seeking. The experimental results show that the method can reduce the north-seeking startup error by nearly 80%, so that the startup north-seeking precision is equivalent to the stable phase and the effective north-seeking time is shortened.

Abstract:As the angle measuring error of fiber optic gyroscope increases cumulatively under the condition of long-term operation,a new error calibration method is proposed for fiber optic sensor.The method is based on the principle of optical triangulation distance measurement,using data acquired by two laser displacement sensors to realize the real-time angular measurement,and the experimental verification of the measurement system is carried out on the high-precision turntable.Experimental results show that the range of angle measurement can be up to ± 10°,while the error is about ±0.005° through compensating the error by least square fitting method,which provides the basis for exact estimate of angle measuring precision of gyro.The non-contact optical measurement method used has no damage to the sur face to be measured.

Abstract:A new development in the dynamic angle measurement based on fiber optic gyro is described, in which a tilt sensor using for accurate measurement of the inclination angle is added to the dynamic goniometer, aiming to eliminating the misalignment angle and improving precision. The principle of the method to eliminate the misalignment angle is introduced in detail. A series of experiments have been carried out to verify this method. Experimental results show the measurement error of the goniometer is better than 2″ and the standard deviation is nearly 0.2″ by this method. It indicates that the method is effective for reducing the misalignment angle and improving the precision of the dynamic goniometer.

Abstract:The fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) has been widely used in the field of dynamic angle measurement due to its characteristics of wide dynamic range and high precision. Considering the change of the installation state of the FOG and the inconvenience of the calibration of the scale factor in engineering, an error compensation of the angle measurement using FOG, which is based on the tilt sensor, is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the principle of the angle measurement based on the FOG and the principle of the tilt sensor are introduced and the error compensation model based on tilt sensor is established. Secondly, simulation analysis and error analysis are performed and the compensation scheme is designed. Finally, according to the compensation scheme, the instrument prototype is built and the experiments are carried out. The experimental results show that although the error is not completely eliminated after adopting compensation scheme, the angle measurement deviation of the FOG can be greatly reduced and limited within 5 '' when the tilt state changes within a small range (the output of the tilt sensor is less than 0.3 degrees). It indicates that the compensation scheme is effective and feasible. More importantly, it is easier to realize in engineering in contrast with other compensation methods.

Abstract:We present an enhanced multiposition method (EMM) to suppress the north finding error caused by bias drift with fiber optic gyroscopes (FOGs). The new proposal is a static method to find the true north, and it employs a differential strategy and a rotation scheme of increasing step angle. Using the noise model of Allan variance, we analyze the north finding errors caused by angle random walk (ARW), rate random walk (RRW), and rate ramp (RR) theoretically, where RRW and RR are two main noise sources of bias drift, and ARW is the rate white noise. Theoretical analysis indicates that, in the traditional multiposition method (TMM), as the position number increases, the error caused by ARW decreases while that by bias drift increases. Therefore, the suppressions of ARW and bias drift are conflicted with each other. The north finding accuracy is limited by bias drift. In contrast, in EMM, both errors caused by ARW and bias drift will decrease as the position number increases. Experimental results with two specific FOGs verify our theoretical analysis. In our experiments, we study the effect of position number and step angle on the north finding accuracy. Utilizing the proposed EMM, for FOG-1, the north finding error has been reduced by 76.60%, and for FOG-2, a 36.33% reduction has been achieved. Our proposal provides a more effective and stable way to find true north, and it can also be applied to other rate gyroscopes. (c) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An orthogonal magnetic field vertical to the light propagating direction will initiate a nonreciprocal phase drift in a depolarized interferometric fiber-optic gyroscope (D-IFOG). This drift appears a linear correlation to the magnitude of the orthogonal magnetic field. We proposed a software-compensation method by attaching two differential Hall sensors to the D-IFOG to sample the magnetic field in real time and the experimental results showed a notable improvement to the magnetic stability.

Abstract:Characteristic testing technology of three-axis diagonal integration of fiber-optic gyro is an important part of high precision intertial navigation.The original calibration method of the scale fator and resolution of three-axis diagonal integration of fiber-optic gyro depends on the tooling and tests the gyro one by one based on the theoretical testing model.The testing time of original method is long and the method is strict in precision of tooling,Aiming at the above problems,put forward a new method that calibrates the scale factor and resolution by measuring installation error and calculating rotation matirx.The experiment proves that the new method can calibrates the scale factor and resolution of all gyro of three-axis diagonal integration of fiber-optic gyro quickly and accurately.The new method has solved the problems of original testing technology for three-axis diagonal integration of fiber-optic gyro being complicated,time-consuming,strict in clamping.

Abstract:Based on the theory of the radial magnetic error (RME) in depolarized interference fiber optic gyroscopes (D-IFOGs) under magnetic field, a new optical method is proposed to decrease the RME by adding a suppressing section fiber (SSF) in D-IFOGs. A related theoretical model is established, and the solutions of the parameters of the SSF are obtained with numerical calculations. Then the results of the suppressed RME are simulated. An experimental system is set up to verify the theory and simulation, and the experimental results prove that the RME can be suppressed effectively with a SSF added in the D-IFOG. The magnitude of the RME can be reduced to one-tenth of the original.

Abstract:The fiber strapdown inertial navigation system (INS) has been widely utilized in aircraft, autonomous driving, robotics, and other fields due to the rapid growth of fiber technology. The core components of INS, the fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) and quartz flexible accelerometer (QFA), are prone to affected by the environmental temperature variation. The traditional temperature drift compensation method requires a considerable time to calibrate each inertial sensor individually. But after the six inertial sensors are integrated, the temperature environment inside the INS will become more complex. As a result, this device-level method has an unsatisfactory effect in the practical application of INS. Furthermore, the traditional method ignores the fact that the temperature drift characteristics of FOG are not the same at different working states. To solve the above problems, we propose a novel temperature drift compensation method of INS based on gravitational search algorithm (GSA) tuning support vector regression (SVR). The startup state and stable working state are modeled independently based on the FOG's features. Without adding additional thermometers to the inertial sensors, the temperature field is constructed by making full use of the information provided by the built-in thermometer of six inertial sensors. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of our method during different working states. And compared with the traditional polynomial fitting method, our method has better performance in the navigation experiment, the navigation accuracy increased by more than 50%.

Abstract:This paper presents an accurate calibration method for drift of fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) in multi-position north-seeking phase. To avoid the effect of the rate of change of accelerometer bias on the drift estimate of FOG, north-seeking by coarse-alignment is performed in multi positions and the north-seeking results are used to compute the drift of FOG. The laboratory test results prove that the proposed method can not only achieve multi-position north-seeking, but also accurately calibrate the drift of FOG. The comparison with the traditional method highlights the superior performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:Self-localization is an essential technology for autonomous vehicles. Building robust odometry in a GPS-denied environment is still challenging, especially when LiDAR and camera are uninformative. In this paper, We propose a learning-based approach to cure the drift of gyroscope for vehicle localization. For consumer-level MEMS gyroscope (stability ~10° /h), our GyroNet can estimate the error of each measurement. For high-precision Fiber optics Gyroscope (stability ~0.05° /h), we build a FoGNet which can obtain its drift by observing data in a long time window. We perform comparative experiments on publicly available datasets. The results demonstrate that our GyroNet can get higher precision angular velocity than traditional digital filters and static initialization methods. In the vehicle localization, the FoGNet can effectively correct the small drift of the Fiber optics Gyroscope (FoG) and can achieve better results than the state-of-the-art method.

Abstract:The broadband source-driven resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG), as a new type of gyroscope, demonstrates impressive advantages in both detection sensitivity and long-term bias stability. To further improve the system performance, this paper investigates the factors affecting the detection sensitivity and long-term bias stability of the broadband source-driven RFOG. Two mathematical models are developed to analyze the relationship between the fiber-optic ring resonator (FRR) parameters and the detection sensitivity, as well as the error induced by imperfect modulation signals. The analysis shows that the detection sensitivity can be improved by optimizing the coupling coefficients of the FRR. Meanwhile, the bias error at the output of the gyroscope caused by imperfect modulation can be effectively suppressed by improving the harmonic suppression ratio of the modulation signal and compensating the phase difference between the first and second harmonics. Finally, after using the optimized FRR and suppressing the error due to imperfect modulation, the experimental results show that the bias stability is in the range of 1°/h to 450μ°/h for different cavity lengths.

Abstract:We study the relationship between the step angles and the accuracy of north finding with fiber optic gyroscopes. A north-finding method with optimized step angles is proposed to reduce the errors caused by rate random walk (RRW). Based on this method, the errors caused by both angle random walk and RRW are reduced by increasing the number of positions. For when the number of positions is even, we proposed a north-finding method with symmetric step angles that can reduce the error caused by RRW and is not affected by the azimuth angles. Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional north-finding method, the proposed methods with the optimized step angles and the symmetric step angles can reduce the north-finding errors by 67.5% and 62.5%, respectively. The method with symmetric step angles is not affected by the azimuth angles and can offer consistent high accuracy for any azimuth angles.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the principles of static and dynamic north-finding methods by measuring the projection of the Earth’s rotation rate with a fiber optic gyroscope. For a comprehensive comparison of the two methods, the influence of a closed-loop feedback mechanism of a servo motor in a turntable is taken into consideration. Thus, we proposed the static and dynamic north-finding experimental implementations according to the different impact of the motor jitters and the different seeking times. Experimental results show that the dynamic method can reduce the north-finding bias error and instability by 60.1% and 54.6%, respectively, in the seeking time of 360 s, while the reduced proportions are 81.3% and 82.5%, respectively, in the seeking time of 120 s, compared with the static method under the jittering effect of the turntable. Therefore, it can be concluded that the dynamic method is more accurate and robust to the jittering effect.

Abstract:Fiber optic gyroscope (FOG)-based north finding is extensively applied in navigation, positioning, and various fields. In dynamic north finding, an accelerated turntable speed shortens the time required for north finding, resulting in a rapid north-finding response. However, with an increase in turntable speed, the turntable's jitter contributes to signal contamination in the FOG, leading to a deterioration in north-finding accuracy. This paper introduces a divide-and-conquer algorithm, the segmented cross-correlation algorithm, designed to mitigate the impact of turntable speed jitter. A model for north-finding error is established and analyzed, incorporating FOG's self-noise and the turntable's speed jitter. To validate the feasibility of our method, we implemented the algorithm on a FOG. The simulation and experimental results exhibited a strong concordance, affirming the validity of our proposed north-finding error model. The experimental findings indicate that, at a turntable speed of 180°/s, the north-finding bias error within a 360 s duration is 0.052°, representing a 64% improvement over the traditional algorithm. These results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in mitigating the impact of unstable turntable speeds, offering a solution for north finding with both prompt response and enhanced accuracy.

Abstract:We analyze the north finding error caused by temperature dependency of scale factor theoretically in measurement-while-drilling surveying utilizing single-axis fiber optic gyroscope (FOG). Theoretical analysis indicates that the error will increase as the inclination angle increases, and it reaches the maximum when the sensitive axis of FOG points to the east or the west. To suppress the temperature dependency, we first employ a polynomial model to compensate the system error of scale factor. And then we give a formula to estimate the optimal calibration value of scale factor, which can reduce the north finding error caused by the random error of scale factor. Experiments with a specific single-axis FOG demonstrate that, with our method, the north finding error can be reduced from 3.966deg to 1.050deg.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. The existence of various noises, including the nonreciprocal noises such as the polarization noise and the Kerr noise as well as the reciprocal circuit noise, limits the performance improvement of the RFOG. An improved scheme by inserting two in-line polarizers in the polarization maintaining fiber transmission-type resonator has been proposed to suppress the polarization-fluctuation induced drift. Furthermore, the adoption of the air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) offers a novel solution to reduce the optical Kerr effect. In addition, A digital signal processor is designed to reduce the reciprocal noises and detect the rotation information. A minimum actual rotation of 0.001°/s is achieved. The dynamic range is improved by a factor of 7 and the scale factor nonlinearity is decreased by a factor of 60.
