Abstract:A reconfigurable dual-channel all-optical logic gate is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide for polarization encoding signals. Six logic functions, XNOR, AND, NOR, XOR, AB¯, and A¯B are implemented at two different wavelength channels by adjusting the polarization states of two 10 Gb/s non-return-to-zero polarization-shift keying (NRZ-PolSK) signals modulated by 10-bit on-off keying (OOK) sequences. The eye diagrams of the logic signals are clearly observed, and the logic functions are well demonstrated as the two incident NRZ-PolSK signals are both modulated by the OOK sequences, which originate from 2(31)-1 pseudo-random binary sequences.

Abstract:The frequency-sensitive optical response due to two-photon resonance of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a tunable band structure of an EIT-based layered medium is considered. The unit cells of this periodic layered structure are composed of dielectric (e.g., GaAs) and EIT atomic vapor. The frequency-sensitive behavior of controllable reflectance and transmittance depending on the external control field can be applicable to new device design (e.g., it can serve as the fundamental working mechanism for photonic switches and photonic logic gates). Some two-input logic gates (e.g., OR and NAND gates) are designed based on the present effect of sensitive switching control that results from the two-photon resonance.

Abstract:By using overlapping-imaging characteristic of the multimode interference (MMI) and the area modulation method, this paper presents a three-wavelength 3×3 rearrangeable switch, which consists of the two cascaded building blocks: a 2×2 tunable splitter and a full shuffle 1×3 switch with only one compound modulation region. Its operation characteristics are analyzed by utilizing 2-D BPM simulation. The simulated extinction ratio is higher than 30dB for all operating wavelengths 1545 nm, 1550 nm and 1555 nm. Good 3-D performances can be expected after optimization and improved fabrication.

Abstract:Vortex beams with optical orbital angular momentum have broad prospects in future high-speed and large-capacity optical communication. In this investigation of materials science, we found that low-dimensional materials have feasibility and reliability in the development of optical logic gates in all-optical signal processing and computing technology. We found that spatial self-phase modulation patterns through the MoS2 dispersions can be modulated by the initial intensity, phase, and topological charge of a Gauss vortex superposition interference beam. We utilized these three degrees of freedom as the input signals of the optical logic gate, and the intensity of a selected checkpoint on spatial self-phase modulation patterns as the output signal. By setting appropriate thresholds as logic codes 0 and 1, two sets of novel optical logic gates, including AND, OR, and NOT gates, were implemented. These optical logic gates are expected to have great potential in optical logic operations, all-optical networks, and all-optical signal processing.

Abstract:Optical logic gate, especially exclusive-or (XOR) gate, plays important role in accomplishing photonic computing and various network functionalities in future optical networks. On the other hand, optical multicast is another indispensable functionality to efficiently deliver information in optical networks. In this paper, for the first time, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a flexible optical three-input XOR gate scheme for multiple input phase-modulated signals with a 1-to-2 multicast functionality for each XOR operation using four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in single piece of highly-nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Through FWM in HNLF, all of the possible XOR operations among input signals could be simultaneously realized by sharing a single piece of HNLF. By selecting the obtained XOR components using a followed wavelength selective component, the number of XOR gates and the participant light in XOR operations could be flexibly configured. The re-configurability of the proposed XOR gate and the function integration of the optical logic gate and multicast in single device offer the flexibility in network design and improve the network efficiency. We experimentally demonstrate flexible 3-input XOR gate for four 10-Gbaud binary phase-shift keying signals with a multicast scale of 2. Error-free operations for the obtained XOR results are achieved. Potential application of the integrated XOR and multicast function in network coding is also discussed.

Abstract:AbstractAn on‐chip dual‐mode all‐optical multifunctional logic operation unit including four AND and two OR logic gates is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is realized using multiple intra‐mode four‐wave mixing (FWM) processes in a multimode silicon waveguide for 2 × 10 Gbit/s non‐return‐to‐zero on–off‐keying (NRZ‐OOK) mode‐division multiplexing signals. The AND logic operation is realized via the non‐degenerate FWM processes, and the OR logic operation is realized by overlapping the two degenerate FWM idlers in frequency domain via appropriately selecting the dual‐mode pump wavelength. The two OR and four AND logic sequences are verified with NRZ‐OOK sequences for both TE0 and TE1 modes.

Abstract:All-optical NOR, OR, and AND logic gates are experimentally demonstrated at a bit rate of 100 Gb/s with single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) associated with careful optical filtering. Correct logic results and clear eye openings are achieved by all the logic gates. These three different logic gates are easily reconfigurable by deploying continuous wave light at the input of the SOA and changing the parameters of the filter at the output of the SOA. We also propose an enhanced method of construction for higher quality OR logic gates by deploying and combining blue- and red-shift filtering simultaneously with phase modulation.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:A scheme for realizing all-optical logic AND and NOR gates simultaneously for nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying signals is proposed and demonstrated based on a delayed interferometer and two semiconductor optical amplifiers. Experimental demonstration at 20 Gb/s verifies the logic integrity of this scheme. The final results are derived in the ON-OFF keying format with clear open eyes and extinction ratios over 10 dB. The proposed scheme can be expanded to realize arbitrary logic gate.

Abstract:Electro-optical hybrid logic is a potential solution to implement both electrical and optical signal processing, which receives analog or digital, electrical or optical signals and produces logic signals in a desired manner. In light of the transfer matrix theory, we found that one can steer light into different output ports of a multimode interference coupler by controlling the phases in a multivalued manner on the image-extended arms. This implementation acts as an analog-to-digital convertor from electric domain to optical domain. Abstract:We demonstrate an invertible all-optical gate on chip, with the roles of control and signal switchable by slightly adjusting their relative arrival time at the gate. It is based on quantum Zeno blockade driven by sum-frequency generation in a periodic-poled lithium niobate microring resonator. For two nearly-identical nanosecond pulses, the later arriving pulse is modulated by the earlier arriving one, resulting in 2.4 and 3.9 power extinction between the two, respectively, when their peak power is 1 mW and 2 mW. Our results, while to be improved and enriched, herald a new paradigm of logical gates and circuits for exotic applications.

Abstract:The theory optical logic coder based on multimode interference self-imaging principle is demonstrated.We concretely design a 1-D 2~3 bit optical logic coder using partial phase modulation method.According to beam propagation method,the simulation results obtained by Beamprop software are discussed and some input parameters are optimized.Different modulation methods produce different Boolean logic states with the extinction ratio higher than 11 dB.

Abstract:The authors have proposed and experimentally demonstrated all-optical logic gates using a single SOA and delay interference filtering that enable simultaneous logic functions of OR and NOR at 40 Gbits/s. The proposed scheme, which utilizes the combinative filtering profile of a delay interferometer and an optical bandpass filter, has great merits for use in generating logic outputs with high quality in terms of pulse shape, extinction ratio, and eye diagram. Abstract:In this paper, we have designed and simulated all-optical logic gates with multi-functionalities based on two-dimensional photonic crystals. All-optical logic gates such as AND, OR, XOR, NOR and NAND are designed, simulated and optimized at 1550 nm wavelength. The operations of the proposed logic gates are based on the phenomenon of interference of optical waves and resonance in the cavity and analyzed with performance parameters such as contrast ratio, transmittance ratio and insertion loss. Based on the identical scheme of photonic crystal structure, multi-functionalities can be realized through tuning refractive index induced by applying voltage or manipulating the initial phase of the input optical wave signals. As a result, the proposed all-optical logic gates with multi-functionalities may contribute to the design of advanced photonic integrated devices.
