Abstract:Broadband switching functionality realized by an ultra-compact W2 photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) is demonstrated with an integrated titanium/aluminum microheater on its surface. Due to the enhanced coupling between the defect modes in W2 PCW, switching functionality with bandwidth up to 24 nm is achieved by the PCW with footprint of only 8 μm × 17.6 μm, while the extinction ratio is in excess of 15 dB over the entire bandwidth. Moreover, the switching speed is measured by alternating current modulation. Response time for this thermo-optic switch is 11.0 ± 3.0 μs for rise time and 40.3 ± 5.3 μs for fall time, respectively.

Abstract:Broadband thermo-optic switch based on an ultra-compact W2 photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) is demonstrated with an integrated titanium/aluminum microheater on its surface. The operating principle relies on shifting a transmission-dip caused by the enhanced coupling between the defect modes in W2 PCW. As a result, broadband switching functionality with larger extinction ratio can be attained. Moreover, microheaters with different width are evaluated by the power consumptions and heating transfer efficiency, and an optimized slab microheater is utilized. Finally, switching functionality with bandwidth up to 24 nm (1557 similar to 1581 nm) is measured by the PCW with footprint of only 8. mx17.6 mu m, while the extinction ratio is in excess of 15 dB over the entire bandwidth. What's more, the switching speed is obtained by the measurement of alternating current modulation. Response time for this thermo-optic switch is 11.0 +/- 3.0 mu s for rise time and 40.3 +/- 5.3 mu s for fall time, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact and broadband 1 × 4 optical switch based on W2 photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs). The footprint of the W2 PCW is only 17.6 μm × 8 μm. An operation bandwidth of 15 nm ± 1 nm is implemented with an extinction ratio over 15 dB in each channel. By introducing the thermal insulation trench, the tuning efficiency is enhanced at least 77% in experiment. The experimental results indicate the potential of the proposed broadband thermo-optic switch in silicon on-chip interconnects.

Abstract:A traveling wave GaAs heterostructure BOA type optical switch is designed.The characteristic of planar microstrip structure (PMS) is analyzed with spectrum domain method.The relations between extinction ratio,half wave voltage and electrode structure are analyzed and calculated with transfer matrix theory and effective index method.The following conclusions have been made:3 dB bandwidth of 20 GHz can be obtained by using PMS.The symmetry of electrode is crucial for the extinction ratio.The technology proposed in this paper can be used to get lower extinction ratio -40 dB.

Abstract:A tunable photonic crystal switch based on two-mode-interference directional coupler is investigated. By modulating the central row of the rods of the coupler to change the real part of the refractive index, the bar-cross switch is obtained. Finite difference time-domain method (FDTD) is employed to predict the characterization of the switch, with crosstalk <-30dB and extinction ratio > 30dB.

Abstract:Optical switch based on an ultra-compact double-slot photonic crystal waveguide (DS-PCWG) with a titanium/aluminum microheater is demonstrated. The operating principle relies on shifting a transmission-dip caused by the defect mode coupling in photonic band gap (PBG). Based on the unique mode coupling in PBG, low switching power of 9.2 mW and high extinction ratio of 17 dB are achieved experimentally while the length of DS-PCWG is only 16 μm.

Abstract:A thermooptic switch With a symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure was demonstrated with silicon photonic-crystal-slab line-defect waveguides. The device size was as small as 160 x 65 mu m. The optic switch operated at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and an extinction ratio greater than 30 dB was obtained by 120-mW heating (switching) power over the wavelength range of 15 nm. The switching ON-OFF response times were about 120 mu s.

Abstract:We demonstrated and fabricated a 20μm-long ultra-compact variable optical attenuator based on thermo-optical effect with slow light photonic crystal waveguide (PCWG). In simulation, we optimize the line-defect width and radius/period ratio (r/a) of the PCWG for deep photonic band gap and large slope photonic band edge. An r/a=140nm/410nm W1 PCWG is selected for its -60dB depth and 36dB variable attenuation range when the tunable refractive index change is 0.01. We also study different shapes of micro-heaters for low power consumption and high heat transfer efficiency. A 24.6mW and 75.9% heat transfer efficiency are achieved in a 2μm-wide right-angle-shaped micro-heater. In experiment, A 4.6nm red shift at the cutoff wavelength of the fundamental mode and a 10dB tunable attenuation range are achieved through tuning the temperature of the W1 PCWG by an 4.7μm-wide aluminum micro-heater with a maximum power consumption as low as 30.7mW.

Abstract:A compact thermo-optic switch based on the cutoff effect of slow-light mode of a tapered W1 photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) is demonstrated with an integrated microheater. Due to the low-group-index taper, the coupling loss of the slow-light PCW is reduced, and a high switching extinction ratio (ER) is attained. Moreover, three types of microheaters are evaluated for the power consumptions, heating transfer efficiency, and temperature uniformities, and an optimized slab microheater is utilized. As a result, low switching power of 8.9 mW and high ER of 23.5 dB are achieved experimentally, while the length of W1 PCW is only 16.8 μm.

Abstract:A broadband thermo-optic 2 x 2 Mach-Zehnder switch that can control two spatial modes simultaneously on a silicon chip is demonstrated in this Letter. A broadband multimode 3 dB coupler is first realized based on symmetrically coupled waveguides with a sub-wavelength structure. The length of the coupler is only 24.2 mu m. By employing such a multimode 3 dB coupler together with symmetrical delay arms, an optical switching functionality is realized experimentally with excess losses less than 1.3 dB and crosstalks less than -15 dB over a 60 nm bandwidth for the two spatial modes. An arbitrary splitting ratio at two output ports for the two modes simultaneously is also demonstrated when applying different currents on the heater. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Three single-mode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are put together closely to construct three PCWs directional coupler (3PCWDC). It is found that the coupling coefficient of two even modes excited by the input field symmetrically entering 3PCWDC may be increased dramatically by reducing the size scales of dielectric rods between the neighbouring PCWs. The coupling length in this structure can be much shorter than that in conventional PCWs within the frequency range of interest. The application of this feature to an ultracompact, wide bandwidth and high-transmission power splitter is addressed. The simulation results by using the finite-difference time-domain method show that the structure exhibits new interesting characteristics.

Abstract:Consecutive wavelength switching characteristics of a simple, compact, and digitally wavelength-switchable laser based on V-coupled cavities are reported. Wavelength switching through thermal and carrier injection effects is examined. Without using band gap engineering for the tuning section, 26- and 9-channel wavelength switching schemes are achieved via thermal and carrier injection effects, respectively. The performances of these two tuning schemes are then compared.

Abstract:In this article, a design of integrated flexible-grid mode- and wavelength-selective switch consisting of silicon-based symmetric Y-junctions and double-series coupled microring resonators with interferometric couplers is introduced in detail. Using thermal tuning, the described device is capable of routing each mode and wavelength signal from the input port to any output port flexibly and independently, forming different bandwidths as needed. For fixed field coupling coefficients, the device can support multiple different wavelength-channel spacings. A silicon-based flexible-grid 1 x 6 mode- and wavelength-selective switch is carefully designed and analyzed as an example. The designed device works for two mode channels and three wavelength channels. The wavelength-channel spacing can vary from 0.10 to 0.80 nm and the 3-dB bandwidth changes from 0.08 to 2.00 nm. When the wavelength-channel spacing is set to be 0.80 nm, the extinction ratio is greater than 50.90 dB and the crosstalk is less than -15.36 dB.
Ultra-compact and wide-spectrum-range thermo-optic switch based on silicon coupled photonic crystal microcavities

Abstract:We design, fabricate, and experimentally demonstrate a compact thermo-optic gate switch comprising a 3.78 um-long coupled L0-type photonic crystalmicrocavities on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. A nanohole is inserted in the center of each individual L0 photonic crystalmicrocavity. Coupling between identical microcavities gives rise to bonding and anti-bonding states of the coupled photonic molecules. The coupled photonic crystalmicrocavities are numerically simulated and experimentally verified with a 6 nm-wide flat-bottom resonance in its transmission spectrum, which enables wider operational spectrum range than microring resonators. An integrated micro-heater is in direct contact with the silicon core to efficiently drive the device. The thermo-optic switch is measured with an optical extinction ratio of 20 dB, an on-off switching power of 18.2 mW, a thermo-optic tuning efficiency of 0.63 nm/mW, a rise time of 14.8 us, and a fall time of 18.5 us. The measured on-chip loss on the transmission band is as low as 1 dB.

Abstract:A non-volatile flexible-grid wavelength-selective switch (NVFGWSS) based on subwavelength-grating-Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST)-assisted silicon microring resonators (MRRs) is proposed. By controlling the state of the subwavelength grating GST and the phase shifter, the transmission spectra of the designed subwavelength-grating-GST-assisted silicon MRRs are combined, and thus tunable bandwidths (BWs) are generated as required. A comprehensive analysis of the presented subwavelength-grating-GST-assisted silicon MRRs and the corresponding NVFGWSS is given. Numerical simulations reveal that, for the designed module comprising a subwavelength-grating-GST-assisted silicon MMR and an ellipse-based crossing waveguide, its maximum crosstalk (CT) and insertion loss are -18.08 and 0.50 dB, respectively. For the designed NVFGWSS, as the channel spacing is 0.8 nm, the in-band ripple and CT are <0.895 and -13.006 dB, respectively, and the 3-dB BW changes from 0.51 to 3.2 nm.

Abstract:We fabricated various microscopic optical devices using photonic crystal slab and Si-wire waveguides and demonstrated their fundamental characteristics. We demonstrated a channel-dropping filter with a photonic crystal slab point-defect optical cavity. Wavelength resolution of less than 1.5 nm and signal dropping efficiency of more than 90 % were obtained for a 20-gm-square device. We also demonstrated an optical add/drop multiplexer with Bragg grating reflectors made from Si-wire waveguides. Its dropping wavelength bandwidth was less than 2 run, and the center wavelength of the dropped optical signal could be tuned by thenno-optic control using a microheater formed on the Bragg reflector. Using Si-wire waveguide, we also demonstrated thermo-optic switches by forming a micro heater on a branch of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer constructed from the waveguides. In this switching operation, we observed an extinction ratio of more than 30 dB, switching power of less than 100 mW, and switching response speed of less than 100 las using a 1 x 2 optical switch with an 85 x 30 mu m(2) footprint. Using the 1 x 2 optical switch elements, we also fabricated a compact 1 x 4 optical switch and demonstrated its fundamental operation.

Abstract:The 2 mu m waveband, specifically near 1.9 mu m, is an imperative resource that could possibly be exploited in future communications systems. This is due to the promising infrastructural developments at the wavelength region (hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber, thulium-doped fiber amplifier) near 1.9 mu m. In this work, we report the 1 x N selector switch based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers operating near the 1.9 mu m wavelength region. As an elementary cell ( N = 2), an insertion loss as low as 1.1 dB, P-pi of 23 mW, 10-90% switching time of lower than 38 mu s and a crosstalk of lower than -25 dB from 1880 to 1955 nm has been determined. In order to prove scalability, the 1 x 8 switch ( N = 8) is demonstrated, indicating crosstalk as low as -21 dB, considering all possible switching configurations across the abovementioned wavelength region. Insertion loss levels are examined.
Switchable Reflective Point Design for Ultrabroadband Microwave Absorber

Abstract:This paper presents an effective method for significantly expanding the bandwidth of a microwave absorber. The method is achieved by inserting a special switchable layer into the absorber already designed. This layer reconstructs and modulates the reflective properties of the original lower grounded dielectric layer, thus eliminating the bandwidth limitations imposed by its total reflection points. In addition, the absorption bandwidth can be further extended to below 1 GHz by switching the varactors loaded on the switchable layer. The final measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation, demonstrating a switchable -10 dB absorption bandwidth covering 0.66- 5.89 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, a micro-electro-mechanical system-based cantilever is integrated as a line defect on a photonic crystal silicon slab for optical switching applications. The elliptical holes are etched in the photonic crystal waveguide that result in wide transmission bandwidth of 56 nm in comparison to etched circular holes in the structure with a footprint of only ${12.5}\,\,{\unicode{x00B5}{\rm m}} \times {8}\,\,{\unicode{x00B5}{\rm m}}$12.5µm×8µm. The device is optimized for variation in height, the lattice constant, and semi-major and semi-minor axes in the optical range of the S-C-L band. It is shown that the response rise time of the device is 21 µs with very high extinction ratio of 30.4 dB and low insertion loss of 0.32 dB.
