Abstract:We present and numerically characterize a closed-form multi-core holey fiber based plasmonic sensor. The coupling properties of the specific modes are investigated comprehensively by the finite element method. It is found that not only phase matching but also loss matching plays a key role in the coupling process between the fundamental mode and plasmonic mode. The coupling transforms from incomplete coupling to complete coupling with increasing analyte RI. An average sensitivity of 2929.39 nm/RIU in the sensing range 1.33-1.42, and 9231.27 nm/RIU in 1.43-1.53 with high linearity is obtained. The dynamic sensing range is the largest among the reported holey fiber based plasmonic sensors, to the best of our knowledge.

The SCHF structure can facilitate analyte filling and enhance the overlapping area of the core mode and surface plasmon polariton（SPP） mode. The coupling properties of the sensor are analyzed by numerical simulation.The maximum sensitivity of 5000 nm/RIU in an RI range of 1.33–1.44, and the average sensitivity of 9295 nm/RIU in an RI range from 1.44 to 1.54 can be obtained.

Abstract:We proposed a closed-form all-in-fiber SCHF-SPR sensor. Using the dual-core directional microstructure for reference, we add a metal layer in the left core to directly enhance the overlapping area of the core mode and plasmonic mode. A theoretical analysis is carried out to simulate the resonant wavelength shift corresponding to RI. An average sensitivity of 2390.91nm/RIU in the RI range 1.33-1.43, and 9294.55nm/RIU in 1.44-1.54 with high linearity and sensitivity is achieved. This SCHF-SPR sensor has a good sensing performance on RI among the existing RI sensors.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-core microchannel-based fiber sensor is studied by using finite element method in the visible and near-infrared bands. Plasmonic material gold (Au) is deposited in microchannel to generate the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, so that sensor can detect the change in RI of its surrounding analyte. Simulation results show that the maximum wavelength sensitivity and resolution are 33600 nm/RIU and 2.97 × 10 −6 RIU for y polarization in the RI range of 1.33 to 1.44, respectively. The highest figure of merit (FOM) of the sensor is 961 for y polarization. In addition, we study the effects brought by the structural changes of the fiber sensor, and the results show that the design of “microchannel coating” dramatically improves the refractive index (RI) detection ability of the sensor. The D-shaped dual-core microchannel-based photonic crystal fiber sensor proposed in this paper has a simple structure, low manufacturing complexity, and high sensitivity. Combined with external sensing technology, this sensor has great application potential in the fields of biotechnology, medical diagnosis, and environmental protection.

Abstract:A novel plasmonic sensor, which is composed of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide and a coupled split-square-ring resonator, is proposed and investigated by utilizing the two-dimensional (2D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The optimized results demonstrate that the proposed sensor is highly sensitive to variations of refractive index (RI) and temperature, i.e. the RI and temperature sensitivities are up to 2040 nm RIU−1 and −1.2 nm/°C, respectively. Numerical simulations reveal that the sensing performance can still be further improved via optimization of the structure. This research may open up new schemes in realizing high-sensitive biosensors with compact configurations.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel plasmon refractive index nanosensor structure based on Fano resonance. The structure comprises a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with an inverted rectangular cavity and a circle minus a small internal circle plus a rectangular cavity (CMSICPRC). This study employs the finite element method (FEM) to analyze the sensing characteristics of the structure. The results demonstrate that the geometrical parameters of specific structures exert a considerable influence on the sensing characteristics. Simulated experimental data show that the maximum sensitivity of this structure is 3240 nm/RIU, with a figure of merit (FOM) of 52.25. Additionally, the sensor can be used in biology, for example, to detect the concentration of hemoglobin in blood. The sensitivity of the sensor in this application, according to our calculations, can be 0.82 nm∙g/L.

Abstract:A surface plasmon resonance refractive index sensor based on a liquid-core photonic crystal fiber is proposed and numerically investigated through the finite element method. The effects of the central metallic analyte channel diameter, the cladding air hole diameter and the liquid-core diameter on the resonant spectrum are studied. A single-resonance and highly sensitive feature of the fundamental mode are utilized to perform the sensing, and a resolution of 2.7x10(-6) RIU is achieved. The results show that the sensor is rather sensitive to the structural parameters and the resonant wavelength can be tuned to a desired value.

Abstract:A surface plasmon resonance biosensor based on three-hole photonic crystal fiber is analyzed. The holes of the three-hole photonic crystal fiber are coated with a lower index calcium fluoride layer and a nanoscale gold layer. Three relatively large size holes should facilitate the fabrication of the inclusions and the infiltration of the analyte. Numerical results indicate that the excitation of the plasmon mode is sensitive to the change of the thickness of the gold layer, calcium fluoride layer and the refractive index of adjacent analyte. The excellent resolution of the biosensor is achieved with spectral-based and amplitude-based method. Especially, the amplitude sensitivity of the biosensor is demonstrated to be as low as 5×10−6RIU, where RIU means refractive index unit.

Abstract:A newly designed photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based plasmonic sensor is proposed for label free biological analyte detection applications. A advanced designing approach is proposed by introducing scaled down air holes to form a light leakage channel when the core is at fiber center. Gold film and an overlayer of high refractive index TiO 2 films are coated in nanoscale regime outside the fiber periphery for efficient sensing response. By analyzing modal characteristics numerically by using finite element method (FEM), the wavelength sensitivity is found to be varied nonlinearly up to 30,000 nm/RIU within the analyte detection range from 1.320 to 1.375 RIU (refractive index unit) and minimum reported sensitivity is 4000 nm/RIU. Moreover, the minimum measurable deviation of the sensor lies of the order of 10 −6 with a high figure of merit (FOM) up to 550 RIU −1 representing an overall good sensing performance. The proposed fiber has good specificity, environmental stability, small size and feasible optical sensing properties which enables its suitability to be an optical component of biosensor.

Abstract:A pure silica core photonic crystal fiber with multicoating layers for high refractive index (RI) sensing is proposed. Au is used as the active plasmonic material. Tantalum pentoxide is deposited on Au in order to prevent the oxidation and further enhance the evanescent field. The simulation was preformed through the full-vector finite element method (FEM), and the results show that the proposed fiber sensor can obtain the average wavelength sensitivity of 9180 nm/RIU with the analyte RI range of 1.40-1.44, corresponding to the resolution of 1.09 × 10-5 RIU. Moreover, the maximum amplitude sensitivity of 1739.26 RIU-1 with resolution of 5.75 × 10-6 RIU are also obtained. The designed sensor can be a potential candidate for microfluidic analyte detecting.

Abstract:We propose a susceptible multichannel plasmonic sensor for sensing refractive index (RI) and temperature media working in the visible to near-infrared range. The proposed structure's resonator consists of an elliptical-shaped ring with two stubs at two sides and four metal nanorods side-coupled to two separated metal–insulator–metal waveguides. The optical responses of the structure, including transmittance spectra and magnetic and electric field distributions, are investigated using the finite element method (FEM) to obtain the optimal structural parameters. The designed structure supports five channels of Fano resonance modes because of the interaction between the narrowband mode of the elliptical-shaped ring resonator and the broadband mode of two separated MIM WGs. The maximum sensitivity values can reach 4500 nm/RIU for RI sensing, and the temperature sensitivity can get 1.00 nm/°C. The designed device exhibits excellent sensing performance and could pave the way for sensing devices with significantly higher sensitivity.

Abstract:A multifunctional biosensor composed of a dual-channel photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is presented to measure dynamic changes in the magnetic field, temperature, and analyte refractive index at mid-infrared wavelengths. The finite-element method (FEM) is used to model and determine the sensing properties of the sensor. The flat dual-channel surface is coated with a gold film, and two nanowires are put on the fan-shaped openings to create directional resonance coupling to detect the analyte refractive index and temperature. By utilizing that the refractive index (RI) of the filled magnetic fluid (MF) is sensitive to the external magnetic field and temperature, a sensor with multi-physical detection functions is obtained. For refractive indexes ranging from 1.47 to 1.52, the maximum sensitivity is as high as 31,000 nm/RIU, with a resolution of 3.22 × 10−6 RIU. The maximum sensitivities for the magnetic field and temperature are 1970 pm/Oe and −5500 pm/°C, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and numerically characterize a design for a photonic crystal fiber based surface plasmonic resonance sensor for an aqueous environment. The coupling properties of the plasmonic modes and core-guided mode are investigated comprehensively by the finite element method. The sensor consists of selectively filled with silver nanowires analyte channels, which enhance the phase matching between the core-guided mode and plasmonic mode. Compared with the entirely filled structure, the selectively filled sensor design demonstrates lower transmission loss and better sensitivity, which is 2800nm/RIU (refractive index unit). Moreover, the resonance wavelength has an increase with the analyte index increase, and the increasing trend of wavelength separation with index change is linear.

Abstract:We investigate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, D-type photonic crystal fiber-based refractive index microbiosensor that works on surface plasmon resonance. We study the performance of the proposed sensor using the finite element method. Further, we analyze the influence of various materials, namely, gold, silver, and indium tin oxide that are deposited on the D-type fiber surface. Of these metals, gold has been examined to be advantageous owing to its enhanced sensitivity and greater chemical stability. The proposed microbiosensor exhibits a high wavelength sensitivity of 19,000 nm/RIU in the sensing range of 1.40-1.41, and its wavelength interrogation resolution is 5.26 x 10(-6) RIU. Besides, this novel scheme provides a high amplitude sensitivity of 569 RIU-1 with the corresponding resolution of 2.63 x 10(-6) RIU. Further, the linearity of the proposed microbiosensor, R-2, is 0.9745 in the sensing environment of the refractive index ranging between 1.31 and 1.40. Finally, optimizing the metal coating thickness, diameter of the air-hole, and the lattice pitch of the proposed sensor have been conducted systematically, in order to augment the sensing performance of the proposed sensor. We foresee that the proposed microbiosensor would turn out to be an appropriate candidate in sensing the analyzes of high refractive index. (C) 2021 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A three-core photonic crystal fiber refractive index sensor based on the surface plasmon resonance effect is proposed. The three cores of this sensor are symmetrical about the center. The gold film deposited outside the fiber structure makes this sensor contact with the analyte directly, which not only reduces the complexity of the fabrication but also makes the limiting loss very low. The sensing performance of the proposed sensor is investigated by using the finite element method. Numerical results show that the loss spectra of the x-polarized core mode are consistent with the y-polarized core mode. The sensor realizes the sensing detection of the analyte refractive index ranging from 1.37 to 1.42. When the analyte's refractive index is 1.42, the maximum wavelength sensitivity of 2427 nm/RIU for x and y polarization, the corresponding maximum resolution can reach 4.12 x 10(-5) RIU.

Abstract:A dual-core and dual D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with silver and aluminum nitride (AlN) films is designed. The distribution characteristics of the electromagnetic fields of core and plasmon modes, as well as the sensing properties, are numerically studied by finite element method (FEM). The structure parameters of the designed sensor are optimized by the optical loss spectrum. The results show the resonance wavelength variation of 489 nm for the refractive index (RI) range of 1.36 ~ 1.42. In addition, a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 13,400 nm/RIU with the corresponding RI resolution of 7.46 × 10 −6 RIU is obtained in the RI range of 1.41 ~ 1.42. The proposed sensor with the merits of high sensitivity, low cost, and simple structure has a wide application in the fields of RI sensing, such as hazardous gas detection, environmental monitoring, and biochemical analysis.

Abstract:A high sensitivity refractive index sensor based on local surface plasmon resonance in hollow-core anti-resonance fiber with wide detection range and high linearity is proposed. Gold nanowires are filled in two symmetric cladding tubes of the hollow-core anti-resonance fiber, and analyte is filled in the fiber core area. A full vectorial finite element method is used to design and analyze the hollow-core anti-resonance fiber sensor based on local surface plasmon resonance. High average wavelength sensitivity around 14996.81 nm/RIU is achieved in a wide refractive index detection range of 1.28–1.44 with high linearity of 0.99991. The maximum figure of merits of the sensor reaches 139.78 RIU −1 . This separate filling of analyte and sensitive material opens up convenience applications for microfluidic detection. Due to its high sensitivity, wide detection range and high linearity of response, the proposed refractive index sensor also has potential applications in environmental protection, food safety and biosensing.

Abstract:A highly sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is composed of a quasi D-shape ten-fold photonic quasi-crystal fiber (PQF) and indium tin oxide (ITO) film. The quasi D-shape and eccentric core structure strengthen coupling between the core mode and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode to enhance the sensing sensitivity, while the mechanical strength of the PQF is preserved. The properties of the sensor are determined numerically and optimized by the finite element method. In the RI range of 1.40–1.44, the maximum wavelength sensitivity and average wavelength sensitivity are 62,000 nm/RIU and 26,500 nm/RIU, respectively. Meanwhile, the loss spectra show smaller full-width at half-maximum and maximum FOM of 542.5 RIU−1. This novel sensor which boasts ultra-high-sensitivity and excellent FOM has large potential in the determination of liquid RIs.

Abstract:A plasmonic refractive index (RI) sensor based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with concentric double rings resonator (CDRR) is proposed and investigated numerically. Utilizing the novel supermodes of the CDRR, the FWHM of the resonant wavelength can be modulated, and a sensitivity of 1060 nm/RIU with high figure of merit (FOM) 203.8 is realized in the near-infrared region. The unordinary modes, as well as the influence of structure parameters on the sensing performance, are also discussed. Such plasmonic sensor with simple framework and high optical resolution could be applied to on-chip sensing systems and integrated optical circuits. Besides, the special cases of bio-sensing and triple rings are also discussed.
