Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of optical buffer with a fairly large Bandwidth-Delay Product(BDP),which is based on a single micro-ring resonator and an OFDM transmitter.The large BDP is gained by distributing data over the subcarriers of the OFDM system via the resonator.We build a numerical model for the entire system and achieve a large BDP with only five subcarriers considered in the simulation.

Abstract:We fabricate a microfiber knot-type ring resonator with a Sagnac loop reflector, and control the light velocity using the device. In this structure, light is reflected by the Sagnac loop and passes through the ring resonator twice. Thus, it possesses doubled transmission and group delay comparing with the microfiber ring resonator without the Sagnac loop. We experimentally demonstrate pulse advancement in an under-coupled microfiber knot-type ring resonator with a Sagnac loop reflector. In the experiment, a maximum of similar to 25 ps pulse advancement was achieved for a 5-Gb/s RZ signal. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A long optically controlled delay line enhanced by ring configuration is demonstrated by using the group-velocity control of signal pulses based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. In experiment, two optical fibre ring cavities are used: one is used as the Brillouin laser, providing single-mode Stokes wave as probe wave; the other is used as the Brillouin amplifier, working as slow light medium. We achieve a maximum time delay of 215 ns using the ring Brillouin amplifier, five times larger than the input probe pulse width of 40 ns. In the meantime, a considerable pulse broadening is observed, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on linear theory.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optically tunable buffer in a nano-scale silicon microring resonator with a 20-mu m radius. The delay-tuning mechanism is based on the red shift of the resonance induced by the thermal nonlinear effect. We use a non-retum-to-zero (NRZ) pseudo random bit sequence (PRBS) signal with different data rates as the probe signal, and investigate its delay performance under different pump powers.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to expand the inherent limit in the product of the optical delay and the transmission bandwidth in resonator-based delay lines, with the optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) technique. The optical group delay properties of a single ring resonator were theoretically studied, and double-carrier OOFDM signals were transmitted through such a device in the experiment, where the subcarrier-frequencies matched those of the resonant modes in the device. The results show that, although the delay-bandwidth product (DBP) is limited in the order of 50ps×10Gb/s for signals on each of the sub-carriers, the total DBP of the system is doubled to 2×50ps×10Gb/s due to the double-carrier transmission.

Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate the transmittion spectra and dispersion characteristics based on the electromagnetically induced transparency like effect in the nested fiber double-ring resonator with the transfer matrix theory; the system which are connected by three directional couplers consists of two inner rings, one outer ring and one straight waveguide. The simulation results show that the tunable group delay can be realized by changing the coupling coefficients. In the NDRR coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer system, we obtained fast light and slow light simultaneously. By adjusting appropriate parameters, we can archive flat band group delay curve that has a profound application in optical interferometer, optical buffer, optical filter, optical modulator, dynamic or static optical sensing field.

Abstract:Buffers represent one of the most important components in a communications router. The device must be able to store data packets for a substantial period of time and release the data within an acceptable delay when the switch is clear. Optical buffers—devices that store optically transmitted data—are considered key elements to achieve synchronized and contention-free traffic in the design of all-light-based communication networks. Conventional buffers use optical fiber delay lines, but since the delay is for a fixed amount of time, they are unable to guarantee contention-free connections in the switch or through a network. Hence, research on tunable optical delay lines is generating significant interest, especially with optical communications now gearing up for large-scale integration. Advances in silicon technology are making this material a choice candidate for future integrated photonics. On-chip delay lines based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonic wire waveguides were recently demonstrated, consisting of up to 100 microring resonators cascaded in either coupled-resonator or all-pass filter (APF) configurations with error-free operation up to 5Gbps.1 This demonstration was a major milestone in the development of all-optical buffers for interconnects. Tunable delays in an SOI planar waveguide based on slow light induced by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) have also been reported,2 as well as intensity-tunable group delays in siliconmicroresonators enhanced by SRS.3 The functional mechanism of a ring resonator-based optical delay line can be described as follows: When a probe beam is injected into a ring with a frequency matching the resonance of the ring, light is forced to circle multiple times, lengthening the delay. If beam frequency deviates from resonance, it will bypass the ring and no delay will occur. When a pump light, whose frequency is of a different resonance, is injected into the microring resonator, the absorbed energy is eventually converted to therFigure 1. Abstract:A hybrid optical fiber delayer based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) slow light is proposed for dual-channel systems. It features two rings as delay lines, where one is an active ring with a Brillouin amplifier and the other is a passive ring. It combines SBS slow light delay with linear transmission delay, which extends the delay range in a great amount. A maximum SBS slow light delay of 468 ns and the capability for tunable delay of over 10 µs for pulses of nanoseconds are demonstrated.
Broadband Brillouin Slow Light Based on Multifrequency Phase Modulation in Optical Fibers

Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using multiple equal-amplitude spectral lines generated by multifrequency phase modulation, The theoretical analysis shows that 4n-1 equal-amplitude spectral lines can be obtained if the modulation signal comprises the fundamental frequency and the odd harmonic waves, where n denotes the number of frequency components in the modulation signal. In experiment, 7 and 11 equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained and Brillouin bandwidths of 340 and 570 MHz are gained, respectively. The experimental results also indicate that the slope of the broadening factor for the delayed signal decreases in the case of broad and flattened Brillouin gain spectrum. Abstract:Buffers are essential components of any packet switch for resolving contentions among arriving packets. Currently, optical buffers are composed of fiber delay lines (FDL), whose blocking and delay behavior differ drastically from that of conventional RAM at least two-fold: 1) only multiples of discrete time delays can be offered to arriving packets; 2) a packet must be dropped if the maximum delay provided by optical buffer is not sufficient to avoid contention, this property is called balking. As a result, optical buffers only have finite time resolution, which may lead to excess load and prolong the packet delay. In this paper, a novel queueing model of optical buffer is proposed, and the closed-form expressions of blocking probability and mean delay are derived to explore the tradeoff between buffer performance and system parameters, such as the length of the optical buffer, the time granularity of FDLs, and to evaluate the overall impact of packet length distribution on the buffer performance.

Abstract:The lack of optical buffer is still one of the main problems that hinder the development of all optical networks. One approach to this problem is to emulate the behavior of optical buffers by using optical switches and fiber delay lines (SDL). Current works on this topic have demonstrated the feasibility of constructing SDL-based First In First Out (FIFO) buffer, Priority buffer, etc. The Last In First Out (LIFO) buffer is another important network component for congestion control and QoS guarantee, and parallel and cascade architectures have been peoposed for the efficient design of such optical buffer. The recent work in showed that it is possible to use M fiber delay lines (FDLs) to construct a LIFO buffer of size B = (3/2) · 2M/2 - 1 and B = 2(M+1)/2 - 1 when M is even and odd, respectively. In this paper, we improve the work in [3] by providing a more efficient construction of SDL-based optical LIFO buffer. We first show that with a single stage feedback structure consisted of one (M + 1) × (M + 1) crossbar switch and M FDLs connecting M outputs of the crossbar back to M its inputs, we are able to construct a LIFO buffer of size B = 2 · 2M/2 - 2 and B = (3/2) · 2(M+1)/2 - 2 when M is even and odd, respectively. This is achieved through adopting a properly delay length setting for each FDL and a careful packets scheduling among FDLs, as well as exploiting the nice function of simultaneous packet reading and witting a FDL can support. We further show that if we adopt a cascade of smaller switches rather than a single (M+1)×(M+1) big switch, the new LIFO design can be implemented with much lower complexity in terms of the total number of basic 2 × 2 switch elements.

These works have demonstrated the feasibility of FDL-based emulation for many kinds of optical buffers, like the First In First Out (FIFO) buffer, Priority buffer, etc. The Last In First Out (LIFO) buffer is another basic network component for congestion control and QoS guarantee. Recently, Huang et al. [1] introduced a recursive construction for the LIFO buffer, which requires no less than 9 log(2) B FDLs to build such a buffer of size B. In this paper, we first show that by a proper FDL grouping and a suitable FDL length assignment for each FDL-group, we need approximately 3 log(2) B FDLs to emulate a LIFO buffer of size B. We then demonstrate that if a careful packet scheduling among FDL-groups is adopted, this number of FDLs can be further reduced to 2 log(2) B.

Abstract:Tunable stimulated-Brillouin-scattering (SBS)-based slow-light in optical fibers has potential applications in optical buffering in the future all-optical router commutation systems. However, due to the low SBS threshold and relatively high realistic signal power, the gain in the usual SBS systems is limited at ∼30 dB. This paper presents a high-gain SBS scheme to realize large delay slow-light, which benefits from avoiding the depletion of the pump power in a short fiber as SBS media. The experiment demonstrates that, up to 50 dB non-saturated gain has been observed in the single-stage 591.8 m fiber SBS amplification. The slow-light delay can be obtained 52 ns, and the fractional delay can exceed 1.
Control of Slow Light in A Ring-Out-Ring Structure

Abstract:This paper proposes a ring-out-ring structure of coupled optical resonators to yield coupled-resonator-induced transparency (CRIT). Considering the insertion loss of the coupler, it theoretically deduces the transmission and the effective phase shift. The influences of the insertion loss of the coupler on the transmittance, the effective phase shift, the group index and the CRIT linewidth are fully studied. We find that the increase in multiple m can effectively enhance the normal dispersion and the group index of the proposed structure. Moreover, the specific expression of the group index at resonance is theoretically deduced and discussed for the proposed structure with two rings. The result shows that the multiple m between the lengths of ring 1 and ring 2 can enhance the group index to m times that of the structure with two equal-sized rings at resonance. The control of slow light in the proposed structure is important for applications of highly sensitivity gyroscopes, optical delay lines and optical buffers, etc.

Abstract:We have observed the fast and slow light propagation in a single fiber ring resonator simultaneously. The two outputs of this structure behave different transmission characteristics that result in opposite dispersion performance. The transmission spectral and group delay of two outputs are demonstrated experimentally and theoretically.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of dispersion transition from abnormal dispersion (fast light) to normal dispersion (slow light) in a side-coupled ring resonator. We reveal that the transition from fast light to slow light can occur, when the tuned loss of the resonator results in the experience from the undercoupled regime to the overcoupled regime. Also, we experimentally fabricate the fiber side-coupled ring resonator, and measure the group delay of the resonator by coupling the resonator to a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The measured experimental results demonstrate the dispersion transition, and are in good agreement with the corresponding theoretical results. The side-coupled resonator with the tunable dispersion (group delay) can exploited for optical storage devices, slow light Fourier transform (FT) interferometric spectrometers, white light cavities (WLCs), optical switches, optical routers, and optical sensors.
