Abstract:Based on the study results of the structure conceptual design, the mechanics analysis and the structural performance tests of a scale model, a light?weight conceptual design of the fuselage structures of a novel manned spacecraft was presented. The flexible composite membranes were em?ployed to construct the large?area thermal protect structure of the manned spacecraft fuselage. A spa?tial truss structural system and a novel joint connection form were used to design the light-weight bearing structure of the manned spacecraft fuselage. An integrated scheme including the rigid bars and the flexible cables was proposed to design the connection system between the manned spacecraft fuselage and the fuel tank. The design scheme was analyzed with FEM software ANSYS, and the mechanical properties of the structure were evaluated. The scale model of the bearing structure of the manned spacecraft fuselage was developed for the structural performance tests, and the FEM analysis model and results were validated. The research achievements may provide a design reference for the light?weight fuselage structures of a novel manned spacecraft.

Abstract:This article uses the connector terminal’s three-dimensional entity as the model, and then imports it into 3D finite element analysis software-SolidWorks, the feasible stamping process plans and the multistage progressive die design are proposed by using the plug-in Logopress 3.The processing of the mold parts simulation and NC programming Steps are simulated by using the SolidCAM.Aiming at the problems of complex edge shape, large number of process stages and low overall design efficiency of terminal multistage progressive die.The application provides a reference for subsequent die design and die manufacturing.

Abstract:The thin-walled reinforced structure is important for achieving structural lightweight in spacecraft. With the rapid development of additive manufacturing technology, large-size, thin-walled, stiffened structures with complex structural forms can be manufactured. However, topology optimization considering manufacturing constraints has always been difficult in this field. This paper proposes a design method for reinforced structures that enables control over structural connectivity based on the Moving Morphable Components (MMC) method, which uses reinforced components with explicit geometrical parameters as primitives for topology optimization. The proposed method solves the challenges of rapidly designing complex geometric reinforcements, forming clear force transfer paths, and effectively reduces the structural topology optimization challenges caused by process constraints associated with the arc start/quench process of wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). This method was used to design a core load-bearing structure of a large satellite, i.e., the 3.5-meter tank supporting structure, which was fabricated by the WAAM process for the first time in the spacecraft field. The structure passed the mechanical test and eventually achieved a weight reduction of 31.6%.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the side mounting plate and the connecting plate of the swing arm type polar plate suction device in the upper plate mechanism of the battery pack machine are thick, Solidworks is used to optimize the structure of the upper plate mechanism, and Ansys finite element analysis software is used to carry out multi-objective optimization on the optimized side mounting plate and the connecting plate. The results show that adding two chamfers to the side mounting and adding a round corner to the corner of the connecting plate not only effectively reduces the weight and maximum equivalent stress of the plate suction device and solves the problem of stress concentration, but also obviously improves the working precision and production efficiency of the lead-acid battery pack machine.

Abstract:The Rigid Clamp Band Connection Device (RCBCD) is a novel satellite-rocket connection method adapted to the heavy lift trend of the launch vehicle. The static analysis model for the Rigid Clamp Band (RCB) and the Docking Ring (DR) under preloading state is established, and the structural strength and connection stiffness characteristics under the axial loading are analyzed, and the axisymmetric equivalent and parametric modeling techniques are combined to optimize the section shape parameter, which improves the overall connection performance. The results show that the structural stress concentrated on the "line-to-face" contact position between RCB and DR. Increasing the axial dimension of RCB, reducing the V-type angle and deepening the occlusion depth of RCB and DR can effectively improve the connection rigidity of RCB. By optimizing the section shape, the connection performance of RCBCD can be improved by above 70% under the structural strength and mass constraints.

Abstract:In this study, a new type of cable-strut tensioned antenna mechanism is proposed and subjected to multi-objective optimization. First, a series of new cable-strut tension element configurations is proposed, and the optimal configurations are optimized on the basis of six topological characteristics of stable spatial cable-strut tensioned structures. Second, the mathematical surrogate models between configuration parameters, structural parameters, and fundamental frequencies of antenna mechanisms are established with the response surface method. Third, the optimization of the antenna mechanism synthesis is established, and the antenna configuration with optimal stiffness and mass synthesis is obtained with a genetic algorithm. Finally, the correctness and rationality of the proposed structural configuration is verified by developing a 2 m caliber prototype and conducting a dynamic characteristic test. The results should serve as a useful reference for the design of large caliber satellite antennas in aerospace engineering.

Abstract:The lightweight and displacement-stable design of the mechanical support structure within the APTS (Acquisition, Pointing, and Tracking System) is crucial for enhancing the payload capacity of remote sensing, satellite communication, and laser systems, while still meeting specified functional requirements. This paper adopts the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method to investigate the structural topology optimization of the L-shaped bracket in the APTS, aiming to minimize structural compliance while using volume, key point displacement, and maximum stress as constraints. In the optimization model, differences in the topology of the L-shaped bracket structure are explored to minimize structural compliance, which was performed under volume, key point displacement, and stress constraints, and the results are compared with the initial reinforced structure. The innovative L-shaped bracket structure obtained through topology optimization uses significantly less material than the initial reinforced design, while still meeting the displacement and stress constraints. After smoothing, rounding, and finite element analysis, the displacement and stress performance of the optimized L-shaped bracket structure satisfies the set constraints. The method proposed in this paper offers an innovative solution for the lightweight design of mechanical support structures in APTS, with significant engineering application potential.

Abstract:Connectors are a crucial part of multi-modular floating platforms.Reasonable stiffness con-figuration of connectors may improve the safety and stability of the platforms.In this study,an optimi-zation scheme is employed to determine the stiffness configuration of hinge connectors of a simplified small model of a two-module semi-submersible-type VLFS deployed in South China Sea.The optimi-zation model is built on the objective functions of connector loads,relative displacements of connec-tion points and the CG displacements of modules.The stiffness configuration of connectors is opti-mized by assigning weights for various scenarios of engineering concerns on loads,responses and dif-ferent constraints of the relative displacements.As a result,two types of stiffness configurations of con-nectors are suggested for the Scientific Research&Demonstration Platform(SRDP).In the design phase,structural stiffness analysis for hinge-type connectors of the SRDP is conducted by using finite element method to check the rationality of the stiffness design of the actual connection in the guidance of the optimal results.

Abstract:Optimization of large structures of multiple components is essential to many industries for minimizing mass, especially the design of aerospace vehicles. Optimizing a single primary load member independently of all other primary structures is an incomplete process, due to the redistribution of internal loads, as the stiffness distribution changes. That is, optimizing a component changes joint loads, which then calls for a new optimization - changing internal loads changes the optimum. This is particularly evident under buckling (stability) constraints. The goal is to develop a finite element-based optimization approach which can be used to optimize each component of a large, primary structure assembly. The optimization objective function will be to minimize mass for the system, and the constraints will be both stress constraints as well as buckling constraints. The research aims to improve both the solution and practical usability of these models. The system of interest is a spacecraft fuselage, of which the member components are panels throughout the structure. We present analyses of several main optimization methods, and define a new algorithm to solve this problem, eigenOpt.

Research into the Integrative Application of Damped Flexible Connector in Spacecraft Structures

Abstract:Thermal deformation is a main source affecting the pointing accuracy of the optical system on a satellite.For solving the thermal deformation problem of a satellite under developing,a damped flexible connection design is proposed which can simultaneously attenuate the on-orbit jitter,which deteriorates the quality of images,and the vibration during launch,which is harmful to the safety of the payloads.The damped flexible connector is made of metallic rubber(MR) which has non-linear stiffness and high damping ratio.Numerical results show that the damped flexible connection design can have satisfied performance in simultaneously decreasing the thermal deformation,suppressing the on-orbit jitter and attenuating the vibration during launch.

Abstract:Thin-walled stiffened structures are ubiquitous in aerospace vehicles. The analysis and optimization of these structures is a recurrent theme in structural engineering. Performing this task through combination of commercial softwares rather than home-made codes will broaden the applicability and capability of computer-aided engineering for real purpose designs. We present an integrated strategy to carry out structural analysis and optimization by combining MSC. Nastran and Hyperworks. The overall structure was modeled and analyzed in MSC. NASTRAN. The stiffened ribs were isolated from the overall structure and performed a refined topology optimization in Hyperworks by enforcing displacement boundary conditions extracted from NASTRAN analysis. The powerfullness of structral analysis of NASTRAN and structural optimization of Hyperworks is thus merged to give this integrated approach. A long stiffened cylinder with longitudinal ribs were chosen as an example to detail the procedure, but the approach is versatile and can be developed for more complicated aerospace structures.

Abstract:Aerodynamic contour dimensional accuracy is very important for the stable and safe flight of aerospace vehicles. Nevertheless, due to the influence of various factors such as material properties, machining and manufacturing deviations, and assembly and installation deviations, key structural geometric dimensions are frequently exceeded. Therefore, this paper investigates a data-driven combined vector loop method (VLM)–Skin Model Shapes (SMS) method to realize aerospace vehicle structural geometric accuracy analysis; assembly optimization targeting contour deviation is also achieved. Tests are carried out on a typical aerospace vehicle's underconstrained structural workpieces to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The structures of Small Waterplane Area Twin Hulls are usually complicated and need to reduce the structural weight by efficient optimum tools. This paper details the application of size, shape and topology optimization techniques to the structural design of a SWATH ship by using software Altair.OptiStruct, Msc.Nastran and iSIGHT.The optimization is based on the results of linear static analysis obtained from the optimum tools' integrated FEA codes. The objective function is defined as structural mass and the constraint function is the maximum nominal stress of structures.The results indicate that these optimal tools are practical and reliable in application, but the key problem is the definition of loads, design spaces and variables which is associated with engineer's design knowledge and experiences.
Numerical Modeling and Optimization on Micro‐d Electrical Connector

Abstract:Micro‐D electrical connectors are extremely crucial, highly reliable industrial devices in the fields of aerospace, military, and medicine. The geometry and size of the twisted wire contacts of micro‐D electrical connector are vital for its mechanical properties and structural stability. In this investigation, dynamics modeling, numerical simulation and experimental tests of the insertion‐extraction processes were applied on the twisted wire contacts of micro‐D electrical connector. The computer aided design and engineering (CAD‐CAE) parameterized models of the twisted‐wire contacts were developed, and the theoretical models were also built on the basis of the mechanics of the materials. Nonlinear dynamics simulation was performed by ANSYS/LS‐DYNA finite element software to analyze the force and stress distribution of the insertion‐extraction processes. The results showed that the insertion force (~0.34 N) was higher than the extraction force (~0.32 N), and the stress concentration occurred on the clamping end and the convex hull of the pin. The mechanical model and numerical simulation were then verified by the experimental tests. By the orthogonal test and the sequential quadratic programming optimization method, the insertion‐extraction forces could be reduced to obtain the optimal contacts structural parameters. This theoretical study will help researchers in the design, manufacture, and employment of micro‐D electrical connectors.
Structural Optimization of the Cable-Pipe Assembly for a Lithography Stage Based on the Finite Element Method

Abstract:The stage is the key subsystem in a lithography machine. The cable-pipe assembly transmits the motor coil signal, power and coolant in stage systems. However, disturbances generated by the cable-pipe assembly reduce the ultra-precision of the stage. Therefore, the disturbances need to be reduced to improve the stage positioning accuracy. The cable-pipe assembly and its disturbance characteristics are analyzed to develop a simplified finite element model of the cable-pipe system. Then, the main structural parameters of the assembly are optimized with design guidelines for future cable-pipe assembly designs. Tests show that the finite element model is accurate with a first order frequency error of less than 10％. Simulations show that the disturbance amplitude of the L-direction is reduced by 80％relative to that without optimization.
Topology Optimization Procedure of Aircraft Mechanical Components Based on Computer-Aided Design, Multibody Dynamics, and Finite Element Analysis

Abstract:In mechanical engineering, the optimization process is time-consuming because of the lack of communication between design, simulation, and analysis software. In the case of single productions or small quantities, this possibility is not taken into account. In the case of serial productions, on the other hand, the optimization of the design time is of paramount importance due to the large amount of money that can be saved. To address these challenges, this investigation proposes a topological optimization procedure for mechanical parts that have complex geometric shapes using the integration of CAD, MBD, and FEA software. The theory of linear elastodynamics is the basic approach used for the integration process carried out in this paper. In particular, the components analyzed in this work belong to the closing system of the ATR 42/72 cargo door. To explain the software integration procedure devised in the paper using SOLIDWORKS, MSC ADAMS, and ANSYS, a slider-crank mechanism is employed first as a demonstrative example. Subsequently, this computational procedure is applied to a flexible component of the latching system of the door whose loading conditions were previously obtained considering the entire opening mechanism modeled as a rigid multibody system. Finally, the topological optimization of the mechanical part is carried out and a consequential reduction in the amount of material to use is performed. The results obtained are considered significant since they led to considerable advantages in the door opening and closing system as well as a reduction of the total weight of the entire airplane.

Abstract:The composite tape-spring hinge (CTSH) is a lightweight structural connector widely employed in space structures, including spacecraft and satellites, due to its high specific strength and stiffness. Introducing cutouts enables CTSH to possess folding and deployment capability, while optimizing the cutouts finely to optimize the performance of CTSH. However, the interaction between cutout size and the dynamic deployment of CTSH is a novel topic. To address this, a multi-objective optimization problem is formulated, aiming to minimize both the maximum overshoot angle and deployment time while considering mass constraints. An accelerated size optimization is achieved by integrating data-driven surrogate modeling and size optimization. The optimized CTSH design exhibits a significant improvement in performance, with a 26.3% reduction in the maximum overshoot angle and a 12.6% reduction in the deployment time compared to the initial design. The proposed optimization strategy is highly adaptable and can be applied to various optimization problems, offering valuable insights for future designing space deployable structures with desirable performance.

Abstract:This paper is to design a new type of auxetic metamaterial-inspired structural architectures to innovate coronary stents under hemodynamics via a topological optimization method. The new architectures will low the occurrence of stent thrombosis (ST) and in-stent restenosis (ISR) associated with the mechanical factors and the adverse hemodynamics. A multiscale level-set approach with the numerical homogenization method and computational fluid dynamics is applied to implement auxetic microarchitectures and stenting structure. A homogenized effective modified fluid permeability (MFP) is proposed to efficiently connect design variables with motions of blood flow around the stent, and a Darcy-Stokes system is used to describe the coupling behavior of the stent structure and fluid. The optimization is formulated to include three objectives from different scales: MFP and auxetic property in the microscale and stenting stiffness in the macroscale. The design is numerically validated in the commercial software MATLAB and ANSYS, respectively. The simulation results show that the new design can not only supply desired auxetic behavior to benefit the deliverability and reduce incidence of the mechanical failure but also improve wall shear stress distribution to low the induced adverse hemodynamic changes. Hence, the proposed stenting architectures can help improve safety in stent implantation, to facilitate design of new generation of stents.
