Abstract:Jensen’s inequality and extended Jensen’s inequality are two important integral inequalities when problems of stability analysis and controller synthesis for time-delay systems are considered. The extended Jensen’s inequality introduces two additional free matrices and is generally regarded to be less conservative than Jensen’s inequality. The equivalence between Jensen’s inequality and extended Jensen’s inequality in bounding the quadratic term −h∫t−htẋT(s)Zẋ(s)ds in Lyapunov functional of time-delay systems is presented and theoretically proved. It is shown that the extended Jensen’s inequality does not decrease the lower bound of this quadratic term obtained using Jensen’s inequality, and then it does not reduce the conservativeness though two additional free matrices M1 and M2 are involved.

Abstract:This paper studies the optimum design of antennas. The objective function to be maximized is the ratio of gain to quality factor $(Q)$ (i.e., the product of gain and bandwidth) in a specified direction. The theoretical upper bounds for the ratio of gain to $Q$ are first rederived by using the IEEE standard definition of antenna $Q$ . The ratio of gain to $Q$ in a specified direction may be considered as a linear functional of the current distribution, and once it is maximized, an eigenvalue equation can be obtained from the variational principle. This eigenvalue equation can then be solved, yielding an optimum current distribution that maximizes the ratio of gain to $Q$ in the specified direction. A number of numerical examples for small antennas have been presented to demonstrate how the theoretical upper bounds for the ratio of gain to $Q$ can be approached by optimizing the current distributions as well as antenna geometries.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the Mill's ratio estimation problem and get two new inequalities. Compared to the well known results obtained by Gordon, they becomes tighter. Furthermore, we also discuss the inverse Q-function approximation problem and present some useful results on the inverse solution. Numerical results confirm the validness of our theoretical analysis. In addition, we also present a conjecture on the bounds of inverse solution on Q-function.

Abstract:This letter investigates a power allocation problem in a downlink single-input single-output non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. Our goal is to maximize the sum rate of users subject to minimum user rate requirements. We rigorously prove the optimal user decoding order, and show that the sum rate maximization problem is convex, which guarantees the globally optimal solution. Numerical results validate the performance gain by the proposed NOMA compared with conventional schemes.

Abstract:We derive a tight, single-term, purely exponential, lower bound on the Gaussian <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$Q$ </tex-math></inline-formula>-function, along with a method to optimize its tightness and a fast iterative method for its inversion. To illustrate its application, we show that it enables the accurate, analytical estimation of the signal-to-noise ratio penalty and the laser linewidth tolerance of coherent optical communication systems, without any time-consuming simulations.

Abstract:In the current study, we compute some upper bounds for the remainder term of Boole's quadrature rule involving convex mappings. First, we build a new identity for first-order differentiable mapping, an auxiliary result to establish our required estimates. We provide several upper bounds by utilizing the identity, convexity property, and bounded property of mappings and some well-known inequalities. Moreover, based on our primary findings, we deliver applications to the means, quadrature rule, special mappings, and non-linear analysis by developing a novel iterative scheme with cubic order of convergence. To the best of our knowledge, the current study is the first attempt to derive upper bounds for Boole's scheme involving convex mappings.

Abstract:Achievability in information theory refers to demonstrating a coding strategy that accomplishes a prescribed performance benchmark for the underlying task. In quantum information theory, the crafted Hayashi-Nagaoka operator inequality is an essential technique in proving a wealth of one-shot achievability bounds since it effectively resembles a union bound in various problems. In this work, we show that the pretty-good measurement naturally plays a role as the union bound as well. A judicious application of it considerably simplifies the derivation of one-shot achievability for classical-quantum (c-q) channel coding via an elegant three-line proof. The proposed analysis enjoys the following favorable features. (i) The established one-shot bound admits a closed-form expression as in the celebrated Holevo-Helstrom Theorem. Namely, the error probability of sending $M$ messages through a c-q channel is upper bounded by the minimum error of distinguishing the joint channel input-output state against $(M-1)$ decoupled products states. (ii) Our bound directly yields asymptotic results in the large deviation, small deviation, and moderate deviation regimes in a unified manner. (iii) The coefficients incurred in applying the Hayashi-Nagaoka operator inequality are no longer needed. Hence, the derived one-shot bound sharpens existing results relying on the Hayashi-Nagaoka operator inequality. In particular, we obtain the tightest achievable $\epsilon$-one-shot capacity for c-q channel coding heretofore, improving the third-order coding rate in the asymptotic scenario. (iv) Our result holds for infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. (v) The proposed method applies to deriving one-shot achievability for classical data compression with quantum side information, entanglement-assisted classical communication over quantum channels, and various quantum network information-processing protocols.

Abstract:This paper is a revisit of the work [Ladevèze and Pelle, Int. J. Numer. Methods Engrg. 28 (1989)] where the goal here is to acquire guaranteed, accurate and computable bounds of eigenfrequencies through post-processing of conventional finite element results. To this end, a new theoretical quotient is introduced and thereafter, a practical way to deal with the new quotient is developed where the constitutive relation error estimation featured with guaranteed bounding property acts as a key role. Academic numerical examples are performed to check the accuracy of the bounds.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the monotonicity and log-concavity of the generalized Marcum and Nuttall Q-functions. More precisely, a simple probabilistic method is first given to prove the monotonicity of these two functions. Then, the log-concavity of the generalized Marcum Q-function and its deformations is established with respect to each of the three parameters. Since the Nuttall Q-function has similar probabilistic interpretations as the generalized Marcum Q-function, we deduce the log-concavity of the Nuttall Q-function. By exploiting the log-concavity of these two functions, we propose new tight lower and upper bounds for the generalized Marcum and Nuttall Q-functions. Our proposed bounds are much tighter than the existing bounds in the literature in most of the cases. The relative errors of our proposed bounds converge to 0 as b -> infinity. The numerical results show that the absolute relative errors of the proposed bounds are less than 5% in most of the cases. The proposed bounds can be effectively applied to the outage probability analysis of interference-limited systems such as cognitive radio and wireless sensor network, in the study of error performance of various wireless communication systems operating over fading channels and extracting the log-likelihood ratio for differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals.

Abstract:For any positive integer $q\geq 2$ and any real number $\delta\in(0,1)$, let $\alpha_q(n,\delta n)$ denote the maximum size of a subset of $\mathbb{Z}_q^n$ with minimum Hamming distance at least $\delta n$, where $\mathbb{Z}_q=\{0,1,\dotsc,q-1\}$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$. The asymptotic rate function is defined by $ R_q(\delta) = \limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{1}{n}\log_q\alpha_q(n,\delta n).$ The famous $q$-ary asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov bound, obtained in the 1950s, states that \[ R_q(\delta) \geq 1 - \delta\log_q(q-1)-\delta\log_q\frac{1}{\delta}-(1-\delta)\log_q\frac{1}{1-\delta} \stackrel{\mathrm{def}}{=}R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q) \] for all positive integers $q\geq 2$ and $0<\delta<1-q^{-1}$. In the case that $q$ is an even power of a prime with $q\geq 49$, the $q$-ary Gilbert-Varshamov bound was firstly improved by using algebraic geometry codes in the works of Tsfasman, Vladut, and Zink and of Ihara in the 1980s. These algebraic geometry codes have been modified to improve the $q$-ary Gilbert-Varshamov bound $R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q)$ at a specific tangent point $\delta=\delta_0\in (0,1)$ of the curve $R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q)$ for each given integer $q\geq 46$. However, the $q$-ary Gilbert-Varshamov bound $R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q)$ at $\delta=1/2$, i.e., $R_\mathrm{GV}(1/2,q)$, remains the largest known lower bound of $R_q(1/2)$ for infinitely many positive integers $q$ which is a generic prime and which is a generic non-prime-power integer. In this paper, by using codes from geometry of numbers introduced by Lenstra in the 1980s, we prove that the $q$-ary Gilbert-Varshamov bound $R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q)$ with $\delta\in(0,1)$ can be improved for all but finitely many positive integers $q$. It is shown that the growth defined by $\eta(\delta)= \liminf_{q\rightarrow\infty}\frac{1}{\log q}\log[1-\delta-R_q(\delta)]^{-1}$ for every $\delta\in(0,1)$ has actually a nontrivial lower bound.
