Abstract:The study aims to investigate the status quo of non-English major postgraduate students' autonomous English learning via computer and network.In light of the questionnaire survey,it is found that although the subjects hold positive attitudes towards computer-and network-assisted English learning,they do not effectively make use of the new technologies and equipments.Students' selfperception of English proficiency and time spent on out-of-class study are found to exert significant impact on their actual autonomous English learning.

Abstract:Firstly, this study is to obtain the first-hand information of non-English major college students' autonomous learning in the process of foreign language learning through questionnaire survey. Secondly, through the analysis of the collected data, find out the students' performance in eight aspects of independent learning, and compare their slightly strong and slightly weak items. The results of the study put forward feasible suggestions and elucidate the implications for English teaching, and provide a practical basis for the subsequent research on autonomous learning.
Motivation and Its Impact on Language Achievement: Sustainable Development of Ethnic Minority Students’ Second Language Learning

Abstract:This study examined the English learning motivation of Chinese ethnic university students. A sample of 776 undergraduates from three representative ethnic universities participated in this research. The findings indicated four types of English learning motivation: intrinsic interest, learning situation, personal development, and international communication. There were statistically significant differences between ethnic minority and Han students, and between male and female students. Moreover, the intrinsic interest motivation of Han students was significantly higher than that of ethnic minority students, and female students’ overall motivation and personal development motivation were significantly higher than those of male students. Intrinsic interest motivation had a significantly positive impact on English achievement, whereas learning situation motivation had a significantly negative impact. These findings highlight the improvement of the learning situation and encouragement of intrinsic interest to enhance minority students’ second language learning and sustainable development. Further research on English as a second language should consider the influence of family and ethnic background.
Analysis of Learning Motivation in Foreign Language Acquisiton How Do Non-English Majors' Motivation Impacts Learning Outcome?

Abstract:Learning motivation has been a hot issue in the sphere of foreign language acquisition for years. Studies proved that motivational factors are critical to the achievement of language learning. In order to have a better understanding of students' English learning motivation and how their motivation impact learning outcome, a survey is conducted among 100 non-English majors in Qingdao Agricultural University by using a self-designed questionnaire. The results show that 68% of the participants prefer instrumental motivation in English learning; students who prefer integrative and intrinsic motivation achieve better in CET-4 and CET-6. Based on the research findings, transforming students' learning motivation and building a harmonious learning atmosphere are suggested so as to enhance students' learning proficiency.

Abstract:The present study,through a questionnaire survey,investigates the development of learner autonomy in Chinese non-English major students in College English teaching.Three areas are explored,i.e.,English learning motivation,English learning strategies and the role of teachers in developing students' learner autonomy.The study shows that,to help develop students' learner autonomy,efforts must be made in stimulating their learning motivation,developing and optimizing their learning strategies and changing the role of teachers in College English teaching.

Abstract:Existing literature indicates that motivation is the most powerful determining factor that influences the rate and success of second language learning (Jiang, 2016; Kramsch & Yin, 2018; Li & Edwards, 2017; Liu et al., 2016; Liu, 2016; You & Dörnyei, 2016; Zhi & Wang, 2019). Currently, there is a growing body of empirical research indicating the changes in second language learning motivation at different school levels at the same or different schools (Chambers, 1999; Kim, 2011, 2012a, b; Lamb, 2007; Williams et al., 2002). The findings of previous studies have mostly shown that student second language learning motivation increases with increasing school levels. Do ̈rnyei (2000) suggested that concentrating on the time dimension of second language motivation is crucial for comprehending the second language motivation of students. However, the temporal variations of second language motivation, particularly motivational changes at different Chinese secondary school levels, have not been emphasized by second language motivation researchers, therefore, this quantitative research investigated the changes in Chinese secondary school students’ English learning motivation from junior high to high school. An English learning motivation questionnaire was used and administered to 3000 students from Grades 7 to 12 in public secondary schools across Mainland China, and employed the reliability analysis and analysis of variance to analyze quantitative data. The statistical results revealed that Chinese high school students ranked highest in English learning motivation, followed by junior high school students. Furthermore, the college entrance examination had a positive impact on high school students' motivation to learn English.
Modeling and verification of the structure of College English learning motivation within educational context

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the internal structure of College English learning motivation in educational context,based on Drnyei’s (1994) framework of L2 motivation.Statistical analyses were performed on the survey data collected from 2,489 non-English major undergraduates from eight tertiary institutions in China.Results show that the English learning motivation of Chinese college students is comprised of 8 components at 3 levels: L2 deep value,L2 surface value,and L2 vitality at the language level;self-efficacy,attribution,and language learning attitudes and beliefs at the learner level;and learning situation attitudes and L2 use anxiety at the learning situation level.Motivations at the language level affect those at the learner level,which in turn affect motivations at the learning situation level.Results also indicate that L2 deep value and language learning attitudes and beliefs are respectively the most important components of motivations at the language level and the learner level.

Abstract:The article begins with the concept of learning autonomy. On the basis of a series of investigations, the author finds a lot of problems in Chinese college students’ self-learning. To solve these problems, suggestions are proposed to cultivate the ability of self-learning. In terms of cognitive and metacognitive, the author demonstrates how to improve students’ learning autonomy before class, during the process of teaching and as well as how to monitor the effects of self-learning after class.

Abstract:Motivation is considered as a key feature in the success of language learning and has great effect on the efficiency and productivity of English language teaching. And a lot of considerable researches and investigations have been done on Chinese college students’ motivation to learn English. Most researches like to value instrumental aspects as the major type for college students’ learning English in Chinese context while integrative motivation is often neglected. In this study, 300 college students are employed to further explore students’ instrumental motivation and integrative motivation and the data analysis of the study somehow shows difference from others, supporting that college students do have expectation and strong integrative motivation toward English language learning and recommendations are offered to the teachers to develop college students’ integrative motivation in English language teaching, suggesting focusing on cultural education in particular.

Abstract:This study examined the motivation of Chinese mature students toward learning English. The participants in the study were ten Chinese mature learners, of whom four were English majors and six were non-English majors. Each underwent a semi-structured interview. Their responses were then coded and analyzed based on Matsuzaka-Carreira’s motivation framework. Furthermore, the Keyword Extraction and Link Terms techniques of PolyAnalystTM were used for further analysis. The results showed that English majors tended to be goal-oriented, and non-English majors were more likely to be means-oriented. English majors were identified as having additional integrative motivation. The factors influencing the motivation of English majors were more diverse than those influencing their non-English major counterparts. The obvious distinction between the two groups was their attitude towards the target language and culture. These findings suggest that instruction for adults should be aligned with mature learners’ practical needs and individual characteristics.

Abstract:Learning is no longer confined to the four walls of the classroom but can happen at any time and place as learners wish. Thus, promoting learner autonomy – the ability of learners to navigate their own learning - has been regarded as the focus of education because it promises successful lifelong learning. However, students' level of learner autonomy, their difficulties when regulating their own learning, and solutions for those problems are the factors that educators usually believe are out of their control. In order to promote non-English major students' learner autonomy, the current research explores those often neglected concerns. The collected quantitative data from the survey answers of 279 non-English majors at a public university in Ho Chi Minh City was analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The findings showed that the students are not very confident with their learner autonomy, and they have a lot of difficulties when conducting their learning on their own outside the classroom. The solutions to promote learner autonomy from their perspectives are improving their self-regulating skills, strengthening their interactions with teachers and friends, and receiving more support from society. These findings present some pedagogical implications to help students study more effectively outside the classroom.

Abstract:The present study examined the status quo of Chinese non-English major undergraduates' out-of-class computer-and network-assisted autonomous English learning(AEL)and tried to present a clear picture of their autonomous learning situation.345 non-English major undergraduates were asked to report their computer-and network-assisted AEL attitude and behavior via a questionnaire.The findings revealed that non-English major undergraduates generally held very positive attitude but exhibited only moderate frequency of computer-and network-assisted AEL behavior outside of class.Their attitude and behavior were significantly and positively correlated,but the correlation was not very high.Suggestions on enhancing students' autonomy in college English teaching were subsequently discussed.

Abstract:This study was undertaken to investigate the general state of affairs of the non-English majors' English autonomous learning in Yangzhou university,exploring the differences between freshmen and non-freshmen in terms of their autonomy in English learning and analyzing the underlying factors responsible for the present state of such affairs.The study shows most non-English majors try to learn autonomously,but they are unable to combine theory with practice because of their unsystematic knowledge of autonomous learning,the lack of intrinsic motivation and the insufficient professional training of strategies.Freshmen and non-freshmen show differences in their understanding of autonomous learning,in their choice of strategies and in their attitude toward SACs.
Questionnaire and Digital Portfolios: the Current Situation of the Autonomous English Learning among Non-English Major Freshmen: ——Exemplified by a local normal university in the mainland China

Abstract:The previous papers took their research sample from the top universities, but this paper took the study sample from a local normal university in which there are 296 non-English major freshmen lack of good English-learning basis. By dint of the SPSS 25.0 analysis of the questionnaire based on the 5-point Likert scale and the digital portfolios produced by MosoTeach online teaching platform, the present study has explored the current situation of the autonomous English learning among the sample of 296 students. The findings revealed that these college freshmen exhibited the medium level of autonomous English learning (AEL) with the mean score 3.1034, which cannot be regarded as good AEL ability or bad one. As for the gender difference, there was a significant disparity between the male students’ AEL and the female students’. The mean in AEL of the female (3.1902) was superior to that of the male (2.9383). The correlation between Section 1 (self-management ability and psychology of autonomous English learning) and Section 2 (autonomous learning behaviour) in the AELS was significantly high in a positive direction with the correlation coefficient R being 0.747 and the regression model between them was established as, Y=-0.41+0.89X. However, there existed a big gap between their ability and psychology of AEL and their AEL behaviour. Meanwhile, the moderate level of AEL for these students was also testified by the digital portfolios in the MosoTeach platform. Finally, towards the situation of these students’ AEL, the countermeasure and suggestions were put forward subsequently. It is anticipated that the paper can provide implications for future studies on promoting learner autonomy in college English teaching.
