Abstract:<p>Under investigation in this letter is a time fractional nonlinear heat conduction equation which usually appears in mathematics physics, integrable system, fluid mechanics and nonlinear areas, by means of applying the fractional symmetry group method with the sense of Riemann–Liouville (R-L)fractional derivative. First of all, we use the fractional symmetry group method to obtain symmetries of the time fractional nonlinear heat conduction equation. Second, according to the above find symmetries, this equation can be reduced to a fractional ordinary differential equation. Moreover, invariant solutions of the time fractional nonlinear heat conduction equation are yielded. Finally, with the aid of the Ibragimov theorem, the conservation laws are also find to the time fractional nonlinear heat conduction equation. These new results are an effective complement to existing knowledge.</p>

Abstract:A fractional diffusion equation based on Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives is solved exactly. The initial values are given as fractional integrals. The solution is obtained in terms of $H$-functions. It differs from the known solution of fractional diffusion equations based on fractional integrals. The solution of fractional diffusion based on a Riemann-Liouville fractional time derivative does not admit a probabilistic interpretation in contrast with fractional diffusion based on fractional integrals. While the fractional initial value problem is well defined and the solution finite at all times its values for $t\to 0$ are divergent.

Abstract:We build a fractional dual-phase-lag model and the corresponding bioheat transfer equation, which we use to interpret the experiment results for processed meat that have been explained by applying the hyperbolic conduction. Analytical solutions expressed by H-functions are obtained by using the Laplace and Fourier transforms method. The inverse fractional dual-phase-lag heat conduction problem for the simultaneous estimation of two relaxation times and orders of fractionality is solved by applying the nonlinear least-square method. The estimated model parameters are given. Finally, the measured and the calculated temperatures versus time are compared and discussed. Some numerical examples are also given and discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents the numerical solution of the heat conduction model with a fractional derivative of the Riemann–Liouville type with respect to the spatial variable. The considered mathematical model assumes the dependence on temperature of the material parameters (such as specific heat, density, and thermal conductivity) of the model. In the paper, the boundary conditions of the first and second types are considered. If the heat flux equal to zero is assumed on the left boundary, then the thermal symmetry is obtained, which results in a simplification of the problem and the possibility of considering only half the area. The numerical examples presented in the paper illustrate the effectiveness and convergence of the discussed computational method.

Abstract:Purpose – Academic and industrial researches on nanoscale flows and heat transfers are an area of increasing global interest, where fascinating phenomena are always observed, e.g. admirable water or air permeation and remarkable thermal conductivity. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the phenomena by the fractional calculus. Design/methodology/approach – This paper begins with the continuum assumption in conventional theories, and then the fractional Gauss’ divergence theorems are used to derive fractional differential equations in fractal media. Fractional derivatives are introduced heuristically by the variational iteration method, and fractal derivatives are explained geometrically. Some effective analytical approaches to fractional differential equations, e.g. the variational iteration method, the homotopy perturbation method and the fractional complex transform, are outlined and the main solution processes are given. Findings – Heat conduction in silk cocoon and ground water flow are modeled by the local fractional calculus, the solutions can explain well experimental observations. Originality/value – Particular attention is paid throughout the paper to giving an intuitive grasp for fractional calculus. Most cited references are within last five years, catching the most frontier of the research. Some ideas on this review paper are first appeared.

Abstract:A quasi-static uncoupled theory of thermoelasticity based on the heat conduction equation with a time-fractional derivative of order α is proposed. Because the heat conduction equation in the case 1≤α≤2 interpolates the parabolic equation (α = 1) and the wave equation (α = 2), the proposed theory interpolates a classical thermoelasticity and a thermoelasticity without energy dissipation introduced by Green and Naghdi. The Caputo fractional derivative is used. The stresses corresponding to the fundamental solutions of a Cauchy problem for the fractional heat conduction equation are found in one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases.

Abstract:This paper describes reconstruction of the heat transfer coefficient occurring in the boundary condition of the third kind for the time fractional heat conduction equation. Fractional derivative with respect to time, occurring in considered equation, is defined as the Caputo derivative. Additional information for the considered inverse problem is given by the temperature measurements at selected points of the domain. The direct problem is solved by using the implicit finite difference method. To minimize functional defining the error of approximate solution the Nelder-Mead algorithm is used. The paper presents results of computational examples to illustrate the accuracy and stability of the presented algorithm.

Abstract:By introducing the fractional derivative in the sense of Caputo and combining the pretreatment technique to deal with long nonlinear items, the generalized two-dimensional differential transform method is proposed for solving the time-fractional Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV equation and coupled MKdV equation. The presented method is a numerical method based on the generalized Taylor series expansion which constructs an analytical solution in the form of a polynomial. The numerical results show that the generalized two-dimensional differential transform method is very effective for the fractional coupled equations.

Abstract:A novel distributed order time fractional model is constructed to solve heat conduction, anomalous diffusion and viscoelastic flow problems. Solutions of the formulated governing equation are obtained by the numerical discretization method that the mid-point quadrature rule is applied to approach the distributed order integrals and the L1-formula and L2-formula are used to discrete the time fractional derivatives. The stability and convergence of difference scheme with zero boundary conditions are studied and proven. In the end, three numerical examples are given. By employing an optimization algorithm, we obtain a good fitting result between the computational data with our model and heat conduction experimental data, which validates the effectiveness of the proposed model. Based on the background of the anomalous diffusion of volatile organic compound (VOC) adsorbed on building materials, the second example analyses the error and the convergence order by comparing the discrete solution with the exact solution, which validates the accuracy of the numerical difference method. Based on the solutions by using the difference method, the last example studies the unidirectional flows of generalized Oldroyd-B fluid driven by the moving plate or the pressure gradient and the effects of involved parameters on the velocity distribution are discussed graphically.

Approximate Solutions to Fractional Subdiffusion Equations: The heat-balance integral method

Abstract:The work presents integral solutions of the fractional subdiffusion equation by an integral method, as an alternative approach to the solutions employing hypergeometric functions. The integral solution suggests a preliminary defined profile with unknown coefficients and the concept of penetration (boundary layer). The prescribed profile satisfies the boundary conditions imposed by the boundary layer that allows its coefficients to be expressed through its depth as unique parameter. The integral approach to the fractional subdiffusion equation suggests a replacement of the real distribution function by the approximate profile. The solution was performed with Riemann -Liouville time-fractional derivative since the integral approach avoids the definition of the initial value of the time-derivative required by the Laplace transformed equations and leading to a transition to Caputo derivatives. The method is demonstrated by solutions to two simple fractional subdiffusion equations (Dirichlet problems): 1) Time-Fractional Diffusion Equation, and 2) Time-Fractional Drift Equation, both of them having fundamental solutions expressed through the M-Write function. The solutions demonstrate some basic issues of the suggested integral approach, among them: a) Choice of the profile, b) Integration problem emerging when the distribution (profile) is replaced by a prescribed one with unknown coefficients; c) Optimization of the profile in view to minimize the average error of approximations; d) Numerical results allowing comparisons to the known solutions expressed to the M-Write function and error estimations.

Abstract:In the present paper, we utilized fractional reduced differential transform method (FRDTM) to get the better optimal solution of space-time fractional order heat-like and wave-like partial differential equations (PDEs). One of the distinguishing practical features of this technique is its implementation on space-time fractional order linear and nonlinear PDEs without using discretization and linearization. The advantage of this method to other existing methods such as HAM, HPM etc. is that no prescribed assumptions are required, and the huge computational exertion is reduced and round-off errors are also evaded. To show the capability, usefulness and consistency of the proposed scheme, a few examples have been given to enlightening its efficiency, accuracy and simplicity. Hence, it is a powerful method for solving general space-time fractional order PDEs used in the field of engineering, physics and other disciplines.

Abstract:This study is concerned with numerical approximations of time-fractional stochastic heat-type equations driven by multiplicative noise, which can be used to model the anomalous diffusion in porous media with random effects with thermal memory. A standard finite element approximation is used in space as well as a spatial-temporal discretization which is achieved by a new algorithm in time direction. The strong convergence error estimates for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes in a semigroup framework are proved, which are based on the error estimates for the corresponding deterministic equations, and together with the optimal regularity results of mild solutions to the time-fractional SPDEs. Numerical results are finally reported to confirm our theoretical findings.

Abstract:In the current paper, the numerical solutions for a class of fractional advection–diffusion equations with a kind of new generalized time-fractional derivative proposed last year are discussed in a bounded domain. The fractional derivative is defined in the Caputo type. The numerical solutions are obtained by using the finite difference method. The stability of numerical scheme is also investigated. Numerical examples are solved with different fractional orders and step sizes, which illustrate that the numerical scheme is stable, simple and effective for solving the generalized advection–diffusion equations. The order of convergence of the numerical scheme is evaluated numerically, and the first-order convergence rate has been observed.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with an alternative analytical solution of time-fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation and nonlinear coupled Schrodinger equation obtained by employing fractional reduced differential transform method. The proposed solutions are obtained in series form, converges to the exact solution very rapidly. These results are agreed well with the results obtained by using differential transform method, homotopy perturbation method, homotopy analysis method and Adomian decomposition method. However, the computations shows that the described method is easy to apply, and it needs small size of computation contrary to the existing above said methods.

The study of exact solutions of fractional differential equations helps to understand these complex physical phenomena and dynamic processes. The results show that the method is simple and clear. In addition, with the help of MAPL, we provide some 3D maps with accurate solutions.

Fractional-order Heat Conduction Models from Generalized Boltzmann Transport Equation

Abstract:The relationship between fractional-order heat conduction models and Boltzmann transport equations (BTEs) lacks a detailed investigation. In this paper, the continuity, constitutive and governing equations of heat conduction are derived based on fractional-order phonon BTEs. The underlying microscopic regimes of the generalized Cattaneo equation are thereafter presented. The effective thermal conductivityκeffconverges in the subdiffusive regime and diverges in the superdiffusive regime. A connection between the divergence and mean-square displacement 〈|Δx|2〉 ∼ tγis established, namely,κeff ∼ tγ−1, which coincides with the linear response theory. Entropic concepts, including the entropy density, entropy flux and entropy production rate, are studied likewise. Two non-trivial behaviours are observed, including the fractional-order expression of entropy flux and initial effects on the entropy production rate. In contrast with the continuous time random walk model, the results involve the non-classical continuity equations and entropic concepts.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Advanced materials modelling via fractional calculus: challenges and perspectives’.
Fractional diffusion model generalised by the distributed-order operator involving variable diffusion coefficients

Abstract:The diffusion process plays a crucial role in various fields, such as fluid dynamics, microorganisms, heat conduction and food processing. Since molecular diffusion usually takes place in complex materials and disordered media, there still exist many challenges in describing the diffusion process in the real world. Fractional calculus is a powerful tool for modelling complex physical processes due to its non-local property. This research generalises a fractional diffusion model by using the distributed-order operator in time and the Riesz fractional derivative in space. Moreover, variable diffusion coefficients are introduced to better capture the diffusion complexity. The fractional diffusion model is discretised by the finite element method in space. The approximation of the distributed-order operator is implemented by Simpson’s rule and the L2-1σ formula. A numerical example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed numerical methods.
