Abstract:There are two methods to calculate soil-water pressure in low permeability clay,soil-water pressure calculated jointly and soil-water pressure calculated separately.Which one to be taken to apply in engineering is controversial in academic and engineering circles.The two methods can only consider the extreme case,and the results are quite different.This is mainly because both methods do not fully take into account different physical properties of soils.A unified water-soil calculation formula considering the permeability of soils is proposed.This method is appropriate for most kinds of soils from sandy soil to clays and it ensures the continuity of earth pressure calculation.The concept of the method is very clear and the calculation can be used widely.Finally,the proposed method is validated by an example.
A Method for Determining Critical Thickness of Base Soil of Foundation Pit Subjected to Confined Water

Abstract:The change of pore water pressure and soil effective stress in foundation pit base, subjected to fast increase of confined water pressure due to sudden rise of the influent river during flood peak, have been analyzed. Based on soil permeability and its two damage mechanisms (i.e. tensile failure and shear failure), a new method for determining critical thickness of base plate of foundation pit is presented based on elastic theory. The new method is compared with traditional method to calculate the critical thickness of base soil of foundation pit by case study. Results show that the new method considering indices c(u), phi(u), and the size of foundation pit base, is more reasonable than the traditional method. However, the results calculated by the method in this paper reduce to the results by traditional method as for highly permeable soil like sand.

Abstract:Analytical solutions are developed for one-dimensional consolidation of double-layered saturated soil subjected to groundwater fluctuations. The solutions are derived by an explicit mathematical procedure using Duhamel's theorem in conjunction with a Fourier series, when groundwater fluctuation is described by a general time-dependent function and assumed to be the pore water pressure variations at the upper boundary. Taking as an example the harmonic groundwater fluctuation, the relevant response of the excess pore water pressure is discussed in detail, and the main influencing factors of the excess pore pressure distribution are analyzed. A dimensionless parameter.. has been introduced because it significantly affects the phase and the amplitude of excess pore pressures. The influences of the coefficients of permeability and compressibility of soil on the excess pore pressure distribution are different and cannot be incorporated into the coefficient of consolidation in double-layered soil. The relative permeability ratio of two clayey soils also plays an important role on the curves of the distributions of the excess pore pressures. The effects of the thickness of the soil layer on the excess pore pressure distribution should be considered together with the dimensionless parameter.. and the permeability and compressibility of the double-layered soil system.
Study on Influence of Dissipation of Negative Pore Water Pressure on Heave of Pit Base

Abstract:Excavation will induce negative excess pore water pressure in soft soil. In this work, the dissipation rule of negative excess pore water pressure was studied. Analytical formulas for calculating the negative excess pore water pressure and the heave of pit base were derived based on one-dimensional consolidation theory and Terzaghis effective stress principle. Finally, the influence of the permeability coefficient and the stiffness of soil mass on the heave of pit base was analyzed through a numerical example. The calculated result showed that the dissipation of the negative pore water pressure causes the decrease of effective stress and the heave of pit base.

Abstract:Based on the nonlinear relationship of permeability velocity and hydraulic gradient,four non-Darcy seepage models were summarized to investigate the permeability behavior of soft soil under consolidation pressure.The consolidation-permeability combined test was performed on Xiaoshan clay sample using GDS advanced consolidation testing system, including several stages of constant head test.The behavior parameters of four non-Darcy seepage models were obtained by analyzing the permeability velocity and hydraulic gradient.Fitting results of three non-Darcy seepage models including three-parameter model,power exponent model and two-section model were pretty good,and broken-line model could be simplified to the forms of linear permeability model and Darcy model.All the four models are suitable for describing the non-Darcy seepage behavior of Xiaoshan clay.

Abstract:Pore water and earth pressures acting on retaining structures are investigated using an efficient coastal double-layered excavation model to determine offshore excavation responses to groundwater fluctuations outside foundation pits. Total pore water pressure includes excess pore water pressure (due to groundwater fluctuations) and steady pore water pressure (due to steady seepage) determined using one-dimensional consolidation theory of double-layered soil and one-dimensional steady-state flow theory, respectively. Rankine's active and passive earth pressures are obtained from pore water pressure. This method is applicable to arbitrary groundwater fluctuation conditions. How physical parameters affect pore water pressure is numerically investigated using examples, demonstrating the method's practicality for calculating pore water and earth pressures.

Abstract:Based on Boit's theory, the soil-structure interaction in a pressure tunnel filled with water in saturated soil is investigated with analytical method and the coupled poro-mechanical model. It is assumed that the lining and saturated soil are porous materials and that soil and structure completely contact each other. The analytical solutions of stress, displacement and pore pressure are derived in the Laplace transform domain. The solutions in time domain are obtained by inverting Laplace transform. Numerical examples indicate that the coupled poro-mechanical model can reveal the time-dependent process of stress and deformation in the interaction of soil-structure in a pressure tunnel, and the relative rigidity of soil and structure exerts remarkably influence on the computational result of pressure tunnel.

Abstract:In this paper, a horizontal homogeneous soil layer subjected to rainfall infiltration is adopted to study the influence of some hydraulic parameters on the pore-water distributions systematically. The pore water pressure profiles are calculated using a published analytical solution. The results from the study demonstrates that the influence of desaturation coefficient of the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is the most significant, followed by the saturated permeability and the difference between saturated and residual volumetric water contents.

Abstract:A multi-exponential function (ME) is proposed to depict the highly nonlinear soil water retention curve and hydraulic conductivity function. Then, semi-analytical solution of pore-water pressure in an unsaturated infinite slope at steady state is derived using ME to depict soil hydraulic properties. The solution is verified with experimental and numerical results. It is found that ME can better describe the highly nonlinear hydraulic properties of soil than the single exponential function (SE), which is commonly-used previously. At steady state, the adoption of SE results in overestimating negative pore-water pressure (PWP; i.e., matric suction) by about 25 kPa and slope's factor of safety (FOS) by 100% under rainfall, but underestimating negative PWP by about 50 kPa under evaporation. The difference between PWP and FOS calculated by using SE and ME becomes more significant for soil with bimodal hydraulic conductivity function than that with unimodal one. This difference reduces at a larger slope angle and deeper depth. Moreover, this difference generally increases at a lower SME/ SSE, where SME and SSE represent the suction at which the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity expressed by ME and SE equals the applied rainfall intensity or evaporation rate, respectively. When SME/SSE is greater than 0.1, the difference basically diminishes.

Abstract:This study developed a new method to simultaneously measure gas dispersion coefficient and gas coefficient of permeability (GCP) of an unsaturated soils with due theoretical consideration of steady-state gas transport mechanisms. Correspondingly, a soil column apparatus was developed. Based on the proposed method, gas mixture containing air (with a volumetric concentration >90%) and tracer gas were applied to the column base. The gas dispersion coefficient was estimated based on a measured steady-state tracer gas concentration gradient and a dispersive flux of the tracer gas, the latter of which was determined based on mass conservation of the tracer gas. On the other hand, the GCP was determined based on the total flux of gas mixture and gas pressure gradient following Darcy's law. The new method has the following advantages over existing methods: (1) has an ability to determine gas dispersion coefficient and GCP at any soil depth rather than an average value of a test region; (2) measures the two transport properties at varying soil moisture conditions rather than being limited by uniform moisture distribution; and (3) requires only a simple hand-calculation method to estimate the gas dispersion coefficient without the need to apply nonlinear regression on a gas breakthrough curve. The proposed method to determine GCP and gas dispersion coefficient of a silty sand was verified by independent element tests.(c) 2022 American Society of Civil Engineers.
New Method for Calculation of Water-Earth Pressure on Foundation Pit Considering Groundwater Seepage

Abstract:Nonconsideration of groundwater seepage is one of the main reasons why measured values of water-earth pressure on supporting structures are generally very different from those calculated with classic earth pressure theories.Mechanical effects of groundwater seepage on earth pressure were studied and the viscous drag force and seepage force were considered together.By setting up differential coefficient equations and constructing a set of entire new calculation expressions on the foundation pit were presented with consideration of groundwater seepage.It was proved that the viscous drag force and the water pressure around the earth are in equilibrium with the water weight.The results calculated with the new expressions were very close to the measured water-earth pressure values.This calculation method is universally applicable to excavation engineering and the stability analysis of earth slopes.

Abstract:The classical earth pressure theory assumes a semi-infinite soil behind the wall, which is no longer applicable to the problem of earth pressure in the case of finite soil. A field study was conducted to investigate the earth pressure of finite soil at different excavation depths. The earth pressure cells were used to measure the change in earth pressure along the depth, and the measured earth pressures were compared with the calculation results for finite soil. Moreover, the influence of the width-to-depth ratio, cohesion, and internal friction angle on the earth pressure of finite soil was also analyzed based on the theoretical calculation method. The research results show that compared with the Rankine active earth pressure, the active earth pressure of finite soil was more suitable for the calculation of earth pressure for a finite soil situation. The difference in the earth pressure of finite soil under different width-to-depth ratios would increase with depth, while the cohesion and internal friction angle had little effect on the earth pressure of finite soil.

Abstract:To improve the understanding of the influence of hydraulic properties and rainfall conditions on rainfall infiltration mechanism and hence on the pore-water pressure distributions in single and two-layer unsaturated soil systems, an analytical parametric study has been carried out. Parameters considered in this study include saturated permeability (ks), desaturation coefficient (α), water storage capacity (θs-θr), and antecedent and subsequent rainfall infiltration rate (qA and qB). Moreover, the influence of soil profile heterogeneity is also investigated. The calculated results demonstrate that the infiltration process and pore-water pressure response are primarily controlled by both qα/ks and ks/α. Generally the larger the value of qα/ks , the greater the reduction of negative pore-water pressure in shallow soil layer. Effect of temporal and spatial variation of pore water pressure induced by confined groundwater on slope stability

Abstract:The present simulation of confined groundwater effect in slope stability analysis was too simplified to guarantee an appropriate analysis mode. Considering the problems above, this thesis proposed a concept of using pore water pressure near the slip surface to indicate this effect, and then analyzing the temporal and spatial variation laws of pore water pressure induced by confined groundwater and the consequent influence on slope stability caused by this variation. According to the analysis of slope stability results under different permeability conditions, the concept of seepage coefficient ratio was proposed, and the spatial distribution of pore water pressure in dry season with various seepage coefficient ratios was analyzed, and then the variation laws of slope stability corresponding to different seepage coefficient ratio was obtained. Under two conditions including the permeable layer blockage condition and non-block condition at front edge in wet season, the temporal and spatial variation laws of pore water pressure and effect on the slop stability factor caused by the variation with different rainfall duration were analyzed. Engineering practice was analyzed, the results show that the displacement of slope in wet season lags behind the rainfall and the variation of confined groundwater.
Seepage test and empirical models for soils based on GDS apparatus

Abstract:In order to reveal the seepage characteristics of Ningbo marine soft clay under various hydraulic gradient,confining pressure and void ratio,eight series of constant head seepage tests were performed on both undisturbed and remolded soil samples utilizing the GDS apparatus.Fitting study of the widely used seepage models in academic field was conducted by the test results.It is shown that seepage coefficients of test samples decrease nonlinearly with decreasing void ratio,which behave more obviously on remolded soil samples.Similar seepage behaviors were obtained from both remolded and undisturbed soils as well,and the test results agreed well with fitting lines of the four existing seepage models.A new nonlinear empirical model was proposed,and test data of ten kinds of soils were collected to investigate its rationality and applicability.The comparison research on fitting results shows that the new model is better used than four existing seepage models,and the application of this new model turns to worth further research.

Abstract:In order to study the permeability characteristics of cohesive soil in the consolidation process more accurately, in this work, the pores occupied by the combined water were defined as invalid pores, and the effective pores and ineffective pores were decoupled to study the relationship between effective pores and permeability coefficient. The widely used empirical formulas of the permeability coefficient were modified, and the empirical formulas of the permeability coefficient suitable for the consolidation process of cohesive soil were obtained. Combined with the e − lg σ relationships of normally consolidated soil, underconsolidated soil, and overconsolidated soil, the formulas of permeability coefficient, which considering the influence of initial consolidation state and consolidation stress, in the consolidation process of cohesive soil, were proposed. Finally, the rationality of the new formulas proposed in this paper was analyzed by indoor consolidation-permeability test and existing research. The results showed that the permeability coefficient of cohesive soil in the consolidation process predicted by the new formulas were more consistent with the measured average value. This study possesses practical engineering significance to solve the problem of foundation consolidation settlement.

Numerical and Experimental Study on the Movement of Unsaturated Soil-Water in High Compacted Loess

Abstract:For loess whose compacted degree is above 90%, the relationship between matric suction and vo- lumetric water content under different compaction conditions is studied by filter paper method, and the relationship between Soil water diffusivity and volumetric water content under different compaction conditions is studied by horizontal infiltration method. The capillary water upward law is studied by vertical tube method, and is simulated by GeoStudio. Results of the experiment and the simulation show that the soil pore structure characteristics are changed due to the differ- ent degree of compaction, and influence soil retention ability. Two factors including volumetric water content and density must be considered simultaneously in determining matrix suction and unsaturated soil hydraulic conductivity. With increasing soil compacted degree, the speed of ca- pillarity water movement is decreased. After 105 days, the rising heights of capillary water in soil column are 74 cm, 80 cm and 94 cm in the condition of compacted degree 98%, 95% and 93%, and GeoStudio could be used to simulate capillary water rise.

Abstract:On the basis of the distribution of soil macropores obtained by the CT scanning, the soil water retention curves obtained by the centrifugal machine, the saturated hydraulic conductivity and dispersivity of the soil matrix and macropores obtained by calculation, the transport of water and Br~- in the undisturbed soil was simulated using a proposed method, and the simulated results were compared and analyzed and the figure of Br~- transport in the undisturbed soil at different times were obtained. The influence of the macropores on the movement of water and solute in the soil and the pollution to the groundwater was also quantitatively analyzed.
