Abstract:Given the superior thermal stability and electromagnetic features, continuous Si-B-(C)-N ceramic fibers have displayed great potential to fulfill the increasing demand for the high-temperature structural and functional materials. Manufacture of such ceramic fibers depends heavily upon the design of processable polymer precursors. Herein, a class of polyborosilazanes (PBSZs) with high spinnability were created through a facile one-pot synthesis. The trade-off between spinnability and ceramic yield of PBSZs was overcome by using heptamethyldisilazane and hexamethyldisilazane as the co-condensing agents to polymerize silicon and boron chloride monomers. The optimal PBSZs can fabricate continuous Si-B-C-N fibers with homogeneous diameter of 7.9 ± 0.5 μm and high ceramic yield of 80 wt%. Experimental characterization and quantum chemical computation revealed the mechanistic pictures of the impact of pendant groups on the polycondensation, melt spinning, and pyrolyzing process. These insights improve our understanding of spinnable pre-ceramic polymers for exploiting high-performance nitride ceramic fibers.

Abstract:To increase the content of boron in soluble polyborosilazanes (PBSZs) (the Si/B ratio should be less than 3), we introduce a successful one-pot synthesis method of a precursor by reaction with tris(dichloromethylsilylethyl)borane (TDSB), boron trichloride (BTC) and hexamethyldisilazane (HDMS) that satisfies the above conditions. The precursor was successfully transformed to SiBCN fibers by electrospinning technology. The resulting SiBCN ceramic material produced by the new route has high performance and high-temperature resistance against crystallization. Furthermore, we have analyzed the mechanism of the synthesis and ceramization of the new soluble precursor by NMR, FT- IR and TG- MS, and the high- temperature stability of the resulting SiBCN powder has been analyzed a by DTA, XRD and SEM.

Abstract:The high-temperature durability of SiBCN ceramics is significantly influenced by the boron concentration and synthesis methods. Although single-source synthetic routes allow one to obtain homogeneous ceramics at the atomic level, the content of the boron element therein is limited by borane (BH3). In this study, the synthesis of carborane-substituted polyborosilazanes was performed via a simple one-pot reaction of polysilazanes with alkyne bonds on the main chain and decaborododecahydrodiacetonitrile complexes with different molar ratios. This enabled one to vary the boron content from ∼0 to 40.00 wt %. The ceramic yields were in the range of 50.92-90.81 wt %. Independently of the borane concentration, SiBCN ceramics started to crystallize at 1200 °C, and B4C appeared as a new crystalline phase with increasing boron content. The introduction of boron inhibited the crystallization of Si3N4 and increased the crystallization temperature of SiC. The presence of the B4C phase improved both thermal stability and functional properties such as neutron-shielding characteristics of the ceramics. Therefore, this research opens up new prospects for the design of novel polyborosilanzes with great application potential.

Abstract:In this paper, we have discussed the synthesis of nanoscale silicoboron carbonitride (SiBCN) nanofibers by electrospinning of novel polyborosilazane precursor solutions, which were synthesized from boron trichloride, tris(dichloromethylsilylethyl)borane and hexamethyldisilazane using a one-pot method, followed by pyrolysis at 1000 °C under nitrogen atmosphere. The influence of the processing procedure (solution concentration, feeding rate and spinning voltage) of the electrospum fibers was also investigated. TGA and FT-IR experiments were employed to study the polymer-to-ceramic conversion and SEM was used to characterize the final materials. Combining the precursor derived ceramics route and electrospinning process enables to product SiBCN nanofibers for industrial applications.

Abstract:Polyborosilazanes with controllable B/N ratio were synthesized using high-boron-content m-carborane, dichloromethylsilane, and hexamethydisilazane. After high-temperature pyrolysis, Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics with SiC and B4C as the main phases were obtained. The B/N ratio in the precursors corresponded to the change in the feeding ratio of carborane and dichloromethylsilane. The effects of boron content and B/N ratio on the ceramic precursors and microphase structure in Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics were explored in detail through a series of analytical characterization methods. A high boron content results in a significant increase in the ceramic yield (up to 71 wt%) of polyborosilazanes, and at the same time, the B/N molar ratio was regulated from 28.4:1 to 1.62:1. The appearance of the B4C structure in the Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics through the regulation of the B/N ratio, has rarely been reported.

Abstract:Continuous SiC fibers with excellent mechanical properties and high‐temperature resistance possess immense potential as reinforcements for aeroengines. In this work, we prepared functionalized boron nitride nanosheet (F‐BNNS) composite SiC (F‐BNNS/SiC) fibers by polymer‐derived method. Due to the existence of F‐BNNS, the F‐BNNS/SiC fibers demonstrate an improved tensile strength up to 2300 MPa, representing a 25% increase compared to the original SiC fibers. Furthermore, owing to the chemical bonds established between the F‐BNNS and the SiCxOy network, the decomposition of the SiCxOy amorphous phase and the crystallization of SiC at high temperatures is effectively suppressed. The F‐BNNS/SiC fibers exhibit improved high‐temperature resistance, maintaining a tensile strength of 720 MPa up to 1500°C, while the SiC fibers completely degraded under the same conditions. The successful preparation of BNNS/SiC fibers may offer new insights into the performance enhancement of advanced ceramic fibers.

Abstract:The preparation of dense Si3N4-based ceramics has attracted great attention because of the achievable improvements in their mechanical properties and high-temperature oxidation resistance. In this work, advanced dense boron-containing α/β-Si3N4/Si monoliths were prepared via a high pressure‒high temperature technique in which polymer-derived amorphous SiBN powders were used as raw materials. The crystallization behavior and phase transformation of the polymer-derived amorphous samples were studied in the temperature range from 1400 to 1800 °C. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of boron in the Si3N4 matrix suppresses the phase transformation from α-Si3N4 to β-Si3N4. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the as-prepared samples were measured, and the maximum hardness and fracture toughness of boron-rich SiBN samples reached 14.8 GPa and 7.96 MPa·m1/2, respectively. The hardness of the obtained boron-rich SiBN samples is stable up to 300 °C. In addition, the oxidation behavior of the samples prepared at 1400 and 1600 °C was investigated at 1400 °C for 50 h. The results show that the incorporation of boron significantly improved the oxidation resistance of the samples because of the formation of borosilicate/cristobalite. This work provides guidance for the synthesis of boron-containing α/β-Si3N4-based ceramics with excellent mechanical properties and oxidation resistance.
Synthesis and characteristics of polycarbomethylsilane via a one-pot approach

Abstract:A one-pot approach was developed to synthesize polycarbomethylsilane by using dicholorodimethylsilane, titanocene dichloride, and sodium metal as the reactants. This approach was developed because polycarbomethylsilane is a well-known polymeric precursor for fabricating silicon carbide fibers. The as-synthesized product and the derived fibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray microscopy. The results revealed that the as-synthesized product was Ti-containing polycarbomethylsilane with a linear-chain structure and possessed an appropriate molecular weight and a narrow molecular distribution. It was found that the dicholorodimethylsilane-to-titanocene dichloride molar ratio affected the characteristics of the product, such as the product yield, molecular weight, and polydispersity. Based on the experimental results and referring to the catalytic polymerization of 1-olefin, a possible heterogeneous reaction mechanism is proposed. The as-synthesized product could be electrospun into green fibers. After curing at 180°C for 1 h in air and calcining at 1200°C for 2 h under a N2 atmosphere, the green fibers were transformed into ceramic fibers with a diameter less than 2 μm and an aspect ratio greater than 200. The fibers were composed of β-silicon carbide and titanium carbide.

So this research tries to introduce element B to increase this stability. SiBOC gel fabricated from single-source polyborosiloxanes which are synthesized from polymethylethoxysiloxane (PMES) and B(OH)3 by a sol–gel process, SiBOC ﬁbers have been obtained by electrospinning. And SiBOC creamic ﬁbers gotten with perfect thermo stability.

Abstract:Diversified SiCN fibers with gradient-SiC xN y phase in the interfacial regions between the major phases of carbon-rich SiC phase and Si3N4 phase were prepared via nanochannel diffusion-controlled nitridation of polycarbosilane fibers under different NH3 flow rates. The obtained fibers with excellent mechanical properties showed a different nanostructure and improved high-temperature behavior compared with polysilazane- and polysilylcarbodiimide-derived SiCN ceramics. The enhanced high-temperature properties could be contributed to the inhibition of carbothermal reduction of the Si3N4 phase by the gradient-SiC xN y phase in the interfacial region between the Si3N4 phase and carbon-rich SiC phase. Meanwhile, a suitable amount of interfacial SiC xN y phase as well as the fine distributed microstructure can be helpful to inhibit the high-temperature crystallization of both the SiC phase and Si3N4 phase. Additionally, a nanostructural model has been proposed to understand the effect of interfacial gradient-SiC xN y phase and compositional-dependent high-temperature behavior of obtained SiCN fibers. Our findings provide a novel strategy to prepare SiCN-based ceramic materials with excellent high-temperature stabilities, which we expect to possess great potential in structural and (multi)functional applications at high temperatures and under harsh environments.

Abstract:Boron-containing organosilicon polymers are widely used under harsh environments as preceramic polymers for advanced ceramics fabrication. However, harmful chemicals released during synthesis and the complex synthesis routes have limited their applications. To solve the problems, a two-component route was adopted to synthesize cross-linked boron-containing silicone polymer (CPBCS) via a solventless process. The boron content and CPBCSs’ polymeric structures could be readily tuned through controlling the ratio of multifunctional boron hybrid silazane monomers (BSZ12) and poly[imino(methylsilylene)]. The CPBCSs showed high thermal stability and good mechanical properties. The CPBCS with Si-H/C=C ratio of 10:1 showed 75 wt% char yields at 1000 °C in argon, and the heat release capacity (HRC) and total heat release (THR) are determined to be 37.9 J/g K and 6.2 KJ/g, demonstrating high thermal stability and flame retardancy. The reduced modulus and hardness of CPBCS are 0.30 GPa and 2.32 GPa, respectively. The novel polysilazanes can be potentially used under harsh environments, such as high temperatures or fire hazards.

Abstract:In this contribution we report an integrated method to obtain soluble boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) by combing ball-mill, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth, Lewis acid-base interaction, and ultrasonic exfoliation. This simple and inexpensive method can achieve a high yield of 40% few layer BNNSs. Based on the excellent dispersity in water and dimethylformamide (DMF), we introduced these nanosheets into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to fabricate composite films, which display good uniformity and high thermal conductivity. The high-yield can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the multi-steps processing, while the good dispersity may be derived from the chemical functionalization and the formation of nanohybrids. The present method can promote the practical applications of BNNSs in many fields, especially the polymer-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:Electrically insulating boron nitride (BN) nanosheets possess thermal conductivity similar to and thermal and chemical stabilities superior to those of electrically conductive graphenes. Currently the production and application of BN nanosheets are rather limited due to the complexity of the BN binary compound growth, as opposed to massive graphene production. Here we have developed the original strategy "biomass-directed on-site synthesis" toward mass production of high-crystal-quality BN nanosheets. The strikingly effective, reliable, and high-throughput (dozens of grams) synthesis is directed by diverse biomass sources through the carbothermal reduction of gaseous boron oxide species. The produced BN nanosheets are single crystalline, laterally large, and atomically thin. Additionally, they assemble themselves into the same macroscopic shapes peculiar to original biomasses. The nanosheets are further utilized for making thermoconductive and electrically insulating epoxy/BN composites with a 14-fold increase in thermal conductivity, which are envisaged to be particularly valuable for future high-performance electronic packaging materials.

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) ceramic fibers containing amounts of silicon nitride (Si3N4) were prepared using hybrid precursors of poly(tri(methylamino)borazine) (PBN) and polycarbosilane (PCS) via melt-spinning, curing, decarburization under NH3 to 1000 °C and pyrolysis up to 1600 °C under N2. The effect of Si3N4 contents on the microstructure of the BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics was investigated. Series of the BN/Si3N4 composite fibers containing various amounts of Si3N4 from 5 wt% to 25 wt% were fabricated. It was found that the crystallization of Si3N4 could be totally restrained when its content was below 25 wt% in the BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics at 1600 °C, and the amorphous BN/Si3N4 composite ceramic could be obtained with a certain ratio. The mean tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the composite fibers correlated positively with the Si3N4 mass content, while an obvious BN (shell)/Si3N4 (core) was formed only when the Si3N4 content reached 25 wt%.

Abstract:Synthesis of spinnable precursors with high ceramic yield is a crucial issue in BN fibers manufacturing by polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) route. Spinnability and high ceramic yield are the basis of precursor processability, formability, and mechanical properties. Herein, based on DFT simulation, we designed and synthesized a novel polymer precursor poly[2-propylamino-4,6-bis(methylamino) borazine-co-tri(methylamino) borazine] (PPMAB) via a facile one-pot copolymerization strategy. The random copolymerization model of condensations was obtained through DFT calculation. The molecular chain structure, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution were optimized by adjusting the synthesis conditions. The precursor PPMAB-1:1 with a high ceramic yield of 62.43% and concentrated molecular weight distribution (PDI<1.3) was obtained. Rheological performance research revealed the excellent and stable spinnability of PPMAB-1:1 by the tunable viscosity and low flow activation energy (23.61 kJ/mol). As a demonstration of spinnability, continuous BN fiber with a fine diameter (>10 km, 7.60±1.13 μm, 1.6 GPa) was obtained after melt spinning. The present work effectively improved the ceramic yield and spinnability of polyborazine precursors. Simultaneously, it can be used extensively as a universal method to prepare multifunctional copolymers with precise structure control.

Abstract:SiBCN ceramics have excellent high-temperature stability and anti-oxidation properties, and they are candidates for materials used at extreme conditions. In this paper, amorphous SiBCN(O) ceramics were obtained through pyrolysis of cross-linked polyborosilazanes. The element content could be readily tuned through adjusting the structures of polymer precursors. The cerminization process and microstructure evolution process were systematically investigated. The SiBCN(O) ceramics remain amorphous below 1400 °C. The carbothermal reduction was suppressed because of the presence of boron. The SiBCN(O) ceramics showed 95.7% and 99.2% carbon residual in argon and air at 1600 °C, indicating high-temperature stability and good anti-oxidation properties. These SiBCN(O) precursors/ceramics could be potentially used in composites or protective coatings for harsh environments.

Abstract:So far, most of the preparation methods for polymer/boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) composites are not suitable for mass production. Here, cost-effective and environmentally friendly water/ethanol were selected as the solvents to prepare BNNSs slurry on large scale by liquid exfoliation/solvent exchange. The slurry was then compounded with styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) to form the rubber/BNNSs composites via conventional two-roll milling. The sulfide-containing silane was introduced to modify the interface between BNNSs and the rubber. The silane modified BNNSs (Si-BNNSs) has been characterized by FTIR, XPS and TGA. It is found that, with in situ modification of the silane, the rubber/BNNSs composites exhibited significantly improved thermal conductivity. With 10.5 vol% Si-BNNSs incorporated, the thermal conductivity of the composites is increased by 253%, comparing to the neat SBR. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of the composites are simultaneously largely enhanced. The scalable yet environmentally-friendly slurry approach paves the way for industrial-scale utilization of BNNSs in thermally conductive polymer composites.

Organo-polymeric precursors prepared by polymer precursor method are used to produce ceramic nano-powders through pyrolysis. The ratio of the Si:B is 80:20. The nano-powders was anneal through the hot-pressing method to form the composite ceramics. The features and morphologies of the produced ceramics were investigated by means of mechanics analysis, XRD, FT-IR, SEM and TEM techniques. Experimental results: the density of SiBONC ceramics is between 1.95 g/cm(3) and 2.15 g/cm(3), the flex strength maximizing 150.50 MPa, the Vickers-hardness is 3.78 GPa, the fracture toughness is 2.10 MPa.m(1/2). SiBONC ceramics tan keep the amorphous state at 1700 degrees C, even at 1800 degrees C, the a-SiC can be crystallized from the matrix, the mean grain size is about 100 nm, which indicates that adulterates B, C, N at atom level can obvious increase the crystallize temperature and mechanical property of SiBONC ceramics. Therefore the thermal stability of SiBONC ceramics can, be extraordinary increased.
Novel SiOC nanocomposites for high-yield preparation of ultra-large-scale SiC nanowires.

Abstract:Novel SiOC nanocomposites were successfully synthesized from commercial silica sol and sucrose via a simply designed route. The formation of SiOC nanocomposites was studied using thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence spectrometer, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that the synthesized composites are amorphous in nature and homogeneous with the microstructure of close packed SiO2 and carbon at nanoscale. The SiOC nanocomposites exhibit very high reactivity and can be annealed to produce SiC nanocrystals at 1200 degrees C which is about 300 degrees C lower than the value obtained by thermodynamic calculation. Ultra-large-scale beta-SiC nanowires with high quality were prepared by directly annealing the synthesized SiOC nanocomposites at 1500 degrees C under Ar atmosphere, where the yield of SiC nanowires was up to 59%. The SiC nanowires grow along the [111] direction with highly uniform diameters of about 100 nm. Experimental results indicate that the close contact between SiO2 and carbon at nanoscale plays a vital role in the high yield of SiC nanowires. The present work provides an efficient strategy for the large scale production of high-quality SiC nanowires.
