Abstract:This paper reviews research on the sociology of religion in China since the beginning of the new century. In terms of theoretical research, there are three main themes: first, research focusing on C. K. Yang's sociological study on religion, especially the theories of diffused religion and institutional religion; second, the dialogue with forefront issues such as the application of and controversies related to the rational choice theory of religion in China; and third, indigenous theoretical constructs, including “religious ecology theory” and the theory of the “Sinicization of religion”. In terms of quantitative research, this article reviews progress in the measurement of Chinese religiosity.

Abstract:The revival of folk (popular) religion in China in the last three decades has been noted in many publications and documented in ethnographic studies. However, until now there has been no quantitative study that provides an overall picture of Chinese folk-religion practices. This article is a first attempt to draw the contours of Chinese folk religion based on three recent surveys conducted in mainland China and Taiwan. Three types of folk religion are conceptualized: communal, sectarian, and individual. Different types of folk religion may have different social functions and divergent trajectories of change in the modernization process. At present, in spite of the dramatic social, political, and cultural changes in modern times, the adherents of folk religion still substantially outnumber the believers of institutional religions in Chinese societies.

Abstract:This article systematically reviews the sociological-anthropological traditions in the studies of Chinese folk religion and proposes three future developmental trends.In particular,this work summarizes four distinctive stages in the Anthropological studies of folk religion and discusses the sociological research on communal folk religion in the studies of C.K.Yang as well as later scholars.Then,this article discusses the three possible trajectories in the sociological research of Chinese folk religion from the perspectives of the expanded definition of folk religion,the integration of folk religion in the framework of mainline sociological theories,and the potential cross-regional and cross-cultural comparative analysis.

Abstract:Folk religion, as the basis of the religious landscape in traditional China, is a highly syncretic system which includes elements from Buddhism, Daoism, and other traditional religious beliefs. Due to the shortcomings of denomination-based measurement, most previous social surveys have documented a very low percentage of folk religion adherents in China, and found almost no overlapping among religious beliefs. This study offers a quantitative portrait of the popularity, the diffuseness, and the diversity of Chinese folk religion. With the improved instruments in the 2018 China Family Panel Studies, we first observe that nearly 50% of respondents claim to have multiple (two or even more than three) religious beliefs and the believers of folk religion account for about 70% of the population. By using latent class analysis, this article explores the pattern of inter-belief mixing and identifies four typical classes of religious believers: "non-believers and single-belief believers", "believers of geomancy", "believers of diffused Buddhism and Daoism", and "believers embracing all beliefs". Finally, we find that the degree of commitment varies across these religious classes. Believers of folk religion are found to be less committed than believers of Western institutional religions, but as committed as believers of Eastern institutional religions.

Since the School of History and Culture of Shandong University have undertaken the subject “Studies of Folk Faith and the Chinese Society”, one of the key subjects in the National Ministry of Education, they have proceeded with the relation between folk faith and religion, made deep inquiry into the theory and method of the studies of folk faith and the Chinese society, and have achieved considerable progress. The comments provided by domestic and international scholars are part of the achievements.

Abstract:The past thirty-five years have been the most exciting time for Chinese folklore studies since the inception of the discipline a century ago. Chinese folklore studies has gradually broken away from the grip of the extreme leftist political ideology of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and recovered disciplinary traditions established before the 1949 founding of the People's Republic of China. The field of Chinese folklore studies has theoretically and methodologically enriched not only itself but also other disciplines in humanities and social sciences, as well as arenas of public life. It has participated in and promoted the nationwide project titled "Three Collections of Chinese Folk Literature" and the movement to protect intangible cultural heritage. However, many questions have also surfaced in terms of its theoretical discussions, disciplinary practices, and disciplinary orientation.

Abstract:It is a common phenomenon in China that believers of a popular religion compare some kinship to the relationship between gods and believers.The pilgrims heading for Miaofeng Mount be-lieve that the efficacy of the goddess varies,depending on the hierarchic relationship between the god-dess and the believers.The believers try to establish an intimate kinship with the goddess by address-ing her with the terms of kinship as well as a connection to some religious practice like relatives'com-munication.They expect to use the moral obligation between relatives to ensure the goddess'efficacy. The pattern of difference sequence of Chinese society shapes the logic of the Chinese popular religious practices,and helps the formation of beliefs and ritual practices.In this sense,the Chinese popular religion based on the pattern of difference sequence has the significance of a basic point for the compar-ative study of religion.

Abstract:With the mushrooming of Confucian schools around the world,Chinese traditional culture has been receiving increasing attention from researchers.Since traditional culture is dominated by Confucianism,study of Confucius and Confucianism is an indispensable element to the study of Chinese traditional culture.Thus,Confucian temple,which is the site for people to worship Confucius,is worth studying for better understanding of Chinese traditional culture.This paper reviews the achievements and deficiencies in the studies of the last 20 years and provides some suggestions for further study.

Abstract:Since 2004, Sino-US-European Summer Institute for the Scientific Study of Religions is held by Renmin University of China (RUC) every year. The institute invites the best international scholars to teach Chinese young sociologists and has 191 graduates at the moment. At the same time, RUC established the annual Symposium of Social Scientific Study of Religion in Mainland China to promote empirical study of Chinese religions. The Symposium had been held for three times. Social Science of Religion is becoming a new hot subject in religious studies.

Abstract:Drawing on representative survey data collected in Taiwan, this study examines the effects on volunteering of Chinese folk religion. We find (1) practicing ancestor worship lowers people's likelihood of donating to secular groups while local deity worshippers are more likely to donate money to religious organizations. (2) Sectarian group membership can significantly promote members’ odds of volunteering in religious groups. (3) Individual folk religion is positively associated with the odds of religious giving and volunteering. (4) Individual folk religion adherents mainly donate to Buddhism, Taoism, and Folk Religion, but on an occasional basis.

Abstract:Using the 2007 Empirical Survey of Values in China ESVIC, the authors conducted an empirical study on the paranormal beliefs in contemporary China. The authors find that the types of paranormal beliefs in China are various, but not prevailing. Chinese paranormal beliefs are statistically significant correlated with variables such as age, marital status, education level, and health condition. Those who are older, married, less educated, and have self-rating bad health are more likely to practice paranormal beliefs, but the social correlations are complicated. They are different among types of paranormal beliefs. In the relationship between paranormal beliefs and religious beliefs, the analysis shows that religious believers are more likely to have some paranormal beliefs than non-believers. At the end, the authors explored how to define Chinese Religions.

Abstract:Drawing on pooled cross-sectional data collected in Taiwan, this research examines the age, period, and cohort effects on the trajectories of folk religions. We detect a temporal growth in Taiwanese folk religion from the early 1990s to the mid-1990s, followed by a downward trend in the 2000s. A slight decline of individual folk religion is confirmed across the life course among Taiwanese residents. The cohorts that experienced the martial law era in their formative stage are more likely to practice individual folk religion but less likely to get involved in communal folk religion. Finally, communal folk religion within Buddhism is falling, but individual folk religion has become increasingly popular within institutional religions. This research betters our understanding of Chinese folk religion and sheds light on the classic Weberian disenchantment thesis in the context of Chinese society.

Abstract:The rapid growth of Chinese religion and the related studies will potentially reshape the boundary of sociology of religion. While sociology of religion focuses mainly on exclusive religions, so much so that it was once labeled "sociology of Christianity," it meets challenges and opportunities in China where non-exclusive religions dominate the society. At the micro-level, the prevalence of non-exclusive religion poses challenges to some key concepts rooted in Western society, such as conversion and commitment. At the organizational level, it challenges sect-to-church theory, reminding us to study non-bureaucratic religious organizations. At the market level, Chinese religions are a laboratory for sociologists to examine factors leading to the prevalence of non-exclusive religions.

Abstract:Abstract The paper argues that the distinction between religious and secular realms of society is not as clear-cut in modern societies as it appears in theories of functional and institutional differentiation. The data used are mainly from China with a short excursion to the United States. The starting point is ancestor worship, which is a central element of traditional Chinese religion. The significance of ancestor worship in Chinese history and culture is briefly explained to illustrate on the one hand its central importance as a ritual practice and on the other hand the ambiguities of interpretation. On this basis, some theoretical considerations about the existence of ancestors are presented. This is followed by a report on contemporary temple festivals focusing on the worship of Fuxi, a mythic figure considered to be the first ancestor of the Chinese people. The next step is the description of official state rituals devoted to the worship of the very same mythological hero in contemporary China. Against this backdrop, the last part of the paper discusses the theoretical questions of classification and distinguishing between the religious and the secular.
