Abstract:This paper describes the application of asphalt rapid detection technology in Hainan National Highway G360 project, and uses infrared spectrometer to control the quality of base asphalt raw materials and the quality of SBS modified asphalt and modification effect. The infrared spectra of asphalt before and after modification were compared, and the changes of main characteristic functional groups of SBS modified asphalt after aging were analyzed, and the aging performance of SBS modified asphalt was explored according to the changes of its main functional group index. This paper can promote the application of asphalt rapid detection technology in road engineering, and provide some help and inspiration to other colleagues who are faced with high demand for asphalt raw materials and are difficult to ensure the supply of high-quality asphalt.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.

Abstract:An unanticipated sideeffect of China’s developing economy was the increase in heavy road trafficvehicles utilizing high pressure tires on both new and old infrastructure.Today the extent of rutting has become one of the main forms of asphalt road surfacebreakage. To improve the robustness and high temperature properties of roadsurfacing asphalt, a new high-modulus material has been developed and used tomodify normal road petroleum asphalt. The results from laboratory experimentsconducted at the Jiangsu Baoli Asphalt Co., LTD and real road trials inPeople's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Shanghai, Shanxi and Jiangsu provincein China, indicate that the high-modulus asphalt performed significantly betterat higher-temperatures when compared to samples of more commonly used asphaltmixtures. The high-modulus additive (No. ZQ-1) was prepared in Jiangsu BaoliAsphalt Co. LTD, and the basic production process, the basic properties as wellas the effection to base bitumen was analysed in the paper. And the DynamicStability was evaluated using an automated rut-depth measuring system. Thewater stability and low temperature properties were also discussed. Themodified asphalt material has comparable storage and usage costs to existingutilized asphalts though with enhanced high-temperature properties.

Abstract:Thermal cracking has long been a major concern for airport bituminous pavements in cold regions since it is in close connection with the safe operation of aircraft. This study aims to develop a design method for low-temperature performance-oriented airport bituminous mixtures. The research work mainly includes selecting design parameter, establishing design procedure, and verifying design method. The test and analysis results showed that the destructive tensile strain (DTS) of low-temperature splitting test was sensitive to the change of bitumen content, and can accurately characterize the thermal cracking resistance of the bituminous mixtures. Therefore, DTS was suitable as the design parameter, and its critical values were proposed for different climatic conditions. Furthermore, a new design procedure was established by incorporating DTS into the designs of gradation and optimum bitumen content. Through tests under different low temperature environments, it was verified that the design method can significantly improve the anti-cracking ability of designed bituminous mixtures. This study provides a new idea for enhancing the thermal cracking resistance of airport bituminous pavements in cold regions in terms of bituminous mixture design.

Abstract:To solve the durability of flexible base asphalt pavement, especially its anti-rutting problem, a design method on durable asphalt pavement of flexible base on anti-rutting performance was put forward in the paper, based on many experiments and calculations. Firstly, a method that asphalt could be selected according to penetration and the anti-rutting factor of its base asphalt was found, which solved the problem of the asphalt selection of the flexible base asphalt mixture design. Meanwhile, a method of skeleton-density structure gradation design was proposed based on the fractal void ratio of coarse aggregate, fractal volume of fine aggregate in coarse aggregate, penetration, fractal dimension of gradation particle size, and rutting tests, which effectively solved in advance the rutting and fatigue performance of flexible base asphalt mixtures. Then, on the basis of the fatigue damage, a calculation method of fatigue life was suggested, which solved the problem that the fatigue damage of asphalt mixtures rarely considered the combined effects of creep damage and fatigue damage. In addition, a calculation method of rutting was formulated based on vehicle dynamic load and ANSYS 16.0 software. Lastly, the feasibility of the design method on durable asphalt pavement of flexible base on anti-rutting performance was verified combining with the real engineering of a supporting project and several numerical calculations and tests.
Design and implementation of a full-scale accelerated pavement testing facility for extreme regional climates in China

Abstract:A new full-scale accelerated pavement testing facility is being designed and implemented in Beijing, funded by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), People's Republic of China. This facility is designed as a loop consisting of two semi-circular and two straight test tracks, around which a pilotless vehicle with the maximum weight of 45,000 kg and maximum speed of 60 km/h moves repeatedly. The facility is enclosed, allowing control of environmental conditions including temperature, moisture and ultraviolet radiation. This facilitates testing under simulated extreme conditions experienced in different regional areas throughout China. A general description of components of this system, including the Auto-Vehicle Loading Subsystem, Environment Conditioning Subsystem, Data Collection, Central Controlling Subsystem, and the Testing Loop Subsystem, is summarized together with the proposed system capabilities or parameters.The factors considered during the design phase of this facility are discussed, including the pavement section geometries. A three-dimensional finite element asphalt pavement model subjected to the proposed moving automobile was established to obtain the dynamic response of the designed pavement section and evaluate its dimensions. The result shows that the proposed dimensions of the designed pavement section are appropriate according to the response variation along the pavement section. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.

Abstract:Permafrost in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) accounts for a total area of 1.05 × 10 6 km 2 . Many highway engineerings have been through the permafrost regions of the QTP, including the Qingkang Highway (QKH), Qinghai-Tibet Highway (QTH), and Gonghe-Yushu expressway (GYE), and the Qinghai-Tibet expressway (QTE) will be constructed in the future. Under the action of roadbed construction and global warming, permafrost under roadbed is degraded and causes serious pavement damage. Although many useful cooling measures have been applied to prevent permafrost degradation, their application presents significant challenges on account of the stronger endothermic action of asphalt pavement. This paper summarizes the working principle of existing cooling measures, and ascertains the relationship between pavement damage and ground temperature distribution of permafrost under roadbed. Based on the relationship, geotemperature distribution criteria and requirements for the cooling measures are proposed, and some suitable composite structures and measures are suggested. The results reported in this paper can provide a valuable guidance for the design and construction of the QTE in the future.

Abstract:The actual lifetimes of many highways are lower than that expected based on the initial pavement design, which brings increasingly prohibitive costs of pavement maintenance and repair. Although many works have been done, the real service lifetimes are still disappointing, and the researchers are also trying their best to increase the projects’ life span. In this study, to comprehensively predict the durability and lifetime of newly designed asphalt mixture structures, an asphalt pavement project consisting of three hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures were evaluated. The mixtures were constructed in the pavement project of the Weiwu expressway in Gansu Province. Pavement properties of the asphalt mixtures, rutting and temperature fatigue factors of the dynamic modulus are discussed. The fatigue resistance is supposed to improve on increasing the vehicles’ speed below the freezing point, which may be more suitable for applications in expressways. Meanwhile, the lifetime is measured according to the number of fatigue axle loads calculated, which were corrected between the specimens in the lab and the field core samples. Durability analysis prediction can be obtained based on the fatigue lifetime predictive model accordingly, which can provide more information about the fatigue lifetime and the rehabilitation planning of existing pavements in the future accordingly.

Abstract:The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) is the highest altitude plateau in the world, characterized by strong solar radiation and large diurnal temperature differences and so on, which brings a great negative impact on the temperature and thermal stress field of asphalt pavement. The purpose of this study is to analyze the temperature field and thermal stress status of asphalt pavement in the QTP to provide a reference for pavement design and maintenance in high-altitude areas. The finite element method was applied to establish the temperature field model to study the distribution and variation of pavement temperature. On this basis, the influence of cooling amplitude on pavement thermal stress was studied during cold waves. In addition to this, the key internal factors affecting the thermal stress of pavement, such as surface thickness, surface temperature shrinkage coefficient, surface modulus, and base modulus, were analyzed by an orthogonal test. It was found that temperature and solar radiation have a significant effect on the pavement temperature field. When the cold wave came, the cooling rate had a considerable impact on the thermal stress of the pavement, that is, every 5 °C increase in cooling rate would increase the thermal stress by more than 50%. The temperature shrinkage coefficient and surface modulus of the surface layer material had the greatest influence on the pavement thermal stress. The thermal stress could be reduced by more than 0.4 Mpa for every 5 × 10−6/°C reduction in the surface temperature shrinkage coefficient or every 1000 Mpa reduction in the surface modulus. This study can provide a reference for improving the temperature field and thermal stress field of asphalt pavement in the plateau area.

Abstract:The pavement of expressway service area is subjected to horizontal force from vehicles frequently.Moreover Ultra-thin whitetopping(UTW) can resist the horizontal force.However,special design must be made for UTW pavement in expressway service area.The traffic characteristics of expressway service area and mechanical performance of UTW pavement were analysed.Based on these,axle load equivalent conversion formula was amended.Ultra-fine fly-ash(UFA) was used to replace the same amount of cement of UTW cement concrete.The strength test result shows that UFA concrete's strength rarely decreased.Direct shear tests and pull-out tests were carried out to anlyse the effects of different interfacial combining methods.Based on testing results,the interfacial combining method that spraying modified bitumen firstly and then paving gravel was recommended to combine UTW concrete layer with asphalt concrete layer.The optimum dimension and dosage of gravel were also determined based on these results.The successful implementation of UTW experimental road in expressway service area shows that the new UTW pavement design method is feasible.

Abstract:Along with the rapid development of highways in China, the performance of road pavement is being increasingly challenged. Highways in seasonally frozen areas, widely distributed in northern China, tend to infect diseases as heaving/frost boiling attributed to recurrent freezing and defrosting of water in the soil as well as fatigue load exerted by overloading vehicles. This paper focuses on the performance evaluation of rock asphalt, modified asphalt in seasonally frozen areas. Buton Rock Asphalt (BRA) is chosen as a representative. Laboratory and field tests are conducted and the result manifests that BRA can: (1) upgrade the aggregate-binder cohesion and thus strengthen the high temperature stability significantly; (2) promote the low temperature cracking resistance to some extent; and (3) enhance the resistance to water damage. Additionally, a simplified analysis is made to verify the economic and environmental value of BRA modified asphalt.

Abstract:A new-type high performance cold-patch mixture was made from new-type cold-patch asphalt emulsion, which is able to promote the adhesive effect of asphalt and aggregate. This new mixture boasts advantages such as good workability and being free from bad weather like rain and low temperature. During the production, the evaluation method of cold-patch asphalt material was improved by the adoption of rotary viscosity test and paper trail test. Field tests were carried out on some sections of Linchang Expressway. When compared to existing repair materials, the new-type cold-patch mixture showed better repair effect as well as the potential for a wide range of promotion.

Abstract:Abstract Drainage base can effectively maintain the service performance of asphalt pavement structure in cold and humid areas, and improve its service durability. The void ratio of drainage base asphalt mixture shall be more than 20%, and the asphalt content is generally between 3.15% and 3.55%. Five kinds of open graded asphalt macadam mixtures were selected and tested for structural performance, water permeability, mechanical performance and water temperature stability. According to the test results, it is shown as follows. The water permeability coefficient of the five kinds of asphalt mixtures at 15°C was 0.10-0.19cm/s. The ratio of freeze-thaw splitting strength was 72.1%-92.3%. The compressive strength of uniaxial compression test was 4.53-8.91MPa. The compressive modulus of resilience was 794.79-1236.51MPa. The maximum bending tensile strain of beam was 3150-4977με. It has good structural strength, water stability and drainage performance. After 10-50 freeze-thaw cycles, the performance of structural performance index, tensile strain and mechanical index of asphalt mixture is well. The asphalt mixture can be used for drainage of asphalt pavement structure in high-latitude and low-altitude cold area. The recommended suitable layer is the upper base or lower layer of asphalt pavement structure.

Abstract:In order to study the applicability of basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture in middle surface layer of semi-rigid asphalt pavement structure,firstly, pavement design software is used to calculate the thickness of pavement structure of normal asphalt mixture, high modulus asphalt mixture,SBS modified asphalt mixture,basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture.Then,using software ABAQUS to analyze the stress of the pavement structure of the above 4 kinds of asphalt mixture, the middle surface layer thickness,the tensile stress and the vertical displacement of the different asphalt mixtures are obtained. The results showed that the basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture used in surface layer can effectively reduce the thickness of pavement structure, improve anti rut ability, and try to avoid the use of high modulus asphalt mixture which is easy to aggravate the reflection crack development.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the reliability of the control index APPDI under different base asphalt pavement structures, the research on the correlation analysis between the damage of asphalt pavement and the material strength under high temperature conditions is carried out. Relying on the Guangle Expressway as the project, the distribution of APPDI in the pavement structure was analyzed, and the parameters of the asphalt pavement material were optimized by adjusting the cohesion c and tensile strength ?t of the pavement material, and compared with the results of the Marshall test to determine the optimal parameters of the pavement material. Safety and rationality, comprehensive experimental analysis: It is suggested that the design parameters that should be used in pavement design are cohesion of 0.1630MPa, elastic modulus of 681.41MPa, and Poisson's ratio of 0.35. This research can provide a new idea for the design of structural materials for asphalt pavement.

Abstract:There are high mountains and steep roads in Guizhou Province. Affected by the relatively closed environment, high humidity and other factors, the skid resistance and durability of the highway in tunnels were obviously reduced, which affects the normal operation of the asphalt pavement. Based on the pavement maintenance project of the highway in the Yilaga Tunnel in Guizhou Province, a new kind of epoxy surface treatment maintenance technology for asphalt pavement has been introduced in this paper. Through the comparative analysis of friction coefficient, structural depth and other anti-sliding performance before and after construction, the results has shown that the technology can effectively solve the early diseases and significantly improve the anti-sliding performance of the pavement, and assist to reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the feasibility of using hard-grade asphalt concrete in China's highway construction, based on the accelerated loading test of the full-scale track of the Research Institute of Highway Ministry of Transport (RIOHTrack), the long-term service performance of hard-grade asphalt concrete base pavement was studied, and its actual service effect was evaluated. The study found that hard-grade asphalt concrete has higher strength, modulus and high-temperature stability. Although the low-temperature performance is generally not as good as that of asphalt, with a penetration grade (PG) of 60/80, it has equivalent or better cracking resistance in the area where the RIOHTrack is located. During the five-year observation period, the rutting deformation of the pavement structure showed an annual fluctuation increase. In comparison, the rutting resistance of a hard-grade asphalt concrete base structure can be increased by approximately 16%, and the deflection value is smaller, so the long-term performance of the anti-rutting effect and structural bearing capacity are better. The study shows that hard-grade asphalt concrete base pavement is suitable for highway construction in parts of China, where the climate is similar to that of the RIOHTrack location, or the temperature is higher or the latitude is lower.
