Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.

Abstract:Based on the FEM,the performance characteristics of pavement with different layers are analyzed under static load.The plane stress?plane strain and axisymmetric models are adopted during the course of the analysis for pavements with single?double and four layers.It is obtained that the axisymmetric models can be used for quantitative analysis and the other models for qualitative analysis.The effect on the highway located on the soft clay ground is discussed under the static overload using the axisymmetric model when the thickness of the composite foundation is changing.It is given how the plastic zone develops in the composite foundation.Some conclusions may be taken as references to the design of pavement engineering on the soft clay ground.

Abstract:According to disease investigation of cement concrete overlay of some secondary road in Hunan province, analysis model is built by ABAQUS finite element software. Research shows that the mechanical properties of cement concrete overlay of scheme B, C, D is better than scheme A. And scheme C(3.5m+4m+3.5m) is the recommended scheme,with its vehicle load and temperature stress of cement concrete pavement the smallest, longer fatigue life. Reference is proposed for design of secondary highway cement concrete pavement overlay.

Abstract:Profile K0+850 was selected as a experimental site in Huzhou-Yaojia bridge section of Shen-Su-Zhe-Wan Highway.By burying essential observation instruments in it,settlements of ground surface,shallow layers and deep layer,horizontal movements of soils,pressure of water,soils and dry jet mixing piles were observed during the filling and preload on the foundation.Mechanism and effect of dry jet mixing piles in highway was studied,and some conclusion of import guidance for design and construction was drawn out.

Abstract:Overloaded traffic is one of the major effects that cause more early damage to asphalt pavement than regular traffic. Moving overloaded traffic not only needs to consider dynamic coefficient and axle load coefficient when carrying out pavement mechanics calculations, but also accelerates pavement failure and boosts the cost of construction and maintenance. Although asphalt pavement of a stabilized base with inorganic binder has a strong bearing capacity, the shortcoming of reflective cracking also seriously restricts its performance. This paper describes the mechanical response and crack propagation of asphalt pavement of stabilized base with inorganic binder which has a crack, under the coupling effect of moving overloaded traffic and temperature. Extended finite-element method (XFEM) was conducted to simulate reflective cracks propagating freely from a stabilized base with inorganic binder to asphalt overlay. Dynamic analysis was also carried out by varying the axle weight and tire pressure, which could help highway builders understand the stress distribution of pavement under design traffic and the crack propagation law of pavement structures. Results indicated that the mechanical response of asphalt pavement was comprehensively related to tire pressure, axial weight, and its active position and that overloaded traffic accelerates crack propagation more than regular traffic. This research achievement contributes to providing roadway engineers with a more profound perception to potentially advance pavement design practitioners for specific traffic characteristics.

Abstract:In order to study the applicability of basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture in middle surface layer of semi-rigid asphalt pavement structure,firstly, pavement design software is used to calculate the thickness of pavement structure of normal asphalt mixture, high modulus asphalt mixture,SBS modified asphalt mixture,basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture.Then,using software ABAQUS to analyze the stress of the pavement structure of the above 4 kinds of asphalt mixture, the middle surface layer thickness,the tensile stress and the vertical displacement of the different asphalt mixtures are obtained. The results showed that the basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture used in surface layer can effectively reduce the thickness of pavement structure, improve anti rut ability, and try to avoid the use of high modulus asphalt mixture which is easy to aggravate the reflection crack development.

Abstract:Basalt fiber reinforced asphalt concrete has better durability, crack resistance and temperature stability than traditional untreated asphalt concrete, being gradually used in pavement engineering in China over recent years. In 2014, basalt fiber reinforced asphalt concrete with high-viscosity asphalt modifier was utilized as the top layer of the deck pavement on Shangci Bridge, which was a 240m prestressed concrete continuous T-beam bridge, located in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. In this paper, a three-dimensional model was established to analyze the distribution law of internal stress and strain of the deck pavement when it was under traffic load. The results indicate that thickness, elastic modulus and interface bonding conditions of the deck overlays have different effects on its internal stress and strain distribution. In another two-dimensional model, the high-temperature viscoelasticity response induced by cycle load was obtained on the basis of laboratory creep tests. Under the effect of the cycle load, the largest horizontal creep strain at 60 is calculated to be 379, accounting for 85% of the total strain.

Abstract:The mechanical response of asphalt pavement under vehicular loading is an essential reference for crack-resistant pavement design. However, limited research focuses on the mechanical response measurement of asphalt pavement using a large-particle-size crushed stone base treated with fly ash and slag powder. Therefore, two types of asphalt pavements were constructed. The first type of asphalt pavement uses a large-particle-size crushed stone base treated with fly ash and slag powder, where the slag powder uses granulated blast furnace slag powder. The second type uses a conventional cement-stabilized crushed stone base and serves as a reference structure. Firstly, the strain gauges and temperature sensors were installed during the construction of asphalt pavements. Secondly, the mechanical response of the pavement was tested at different speeds and service time conditions. Then, sensitivity analysis and three-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) were carried out. Finally, the prediction equations were developed. The results show that the longitudinal strain pulse of the asphalt layer exhibited a “compression–tension–compression” characteristic. For the transverse strain pulse of the asphalt layer, the base layer’s transverse and longitudinal strain pulses were only shown as “tensile” characteristics. The vehicular speed significantly affected the strain values for the base and asphalt layers, showing a decreasing trend with increasing speed. For the asphalt layer, the strain values showed an increasing trend with increasing temperature; for the base layer, the strain values showed a decreasing trend with increasing service time. The type of base layer had a significant effect on the strain value. Compared with the conventional base layer, the large-particle-size crushed stone base treated with fly ash and slag powder had lower strain at the base layer and a lower position of the asphalt layer, which could better prevent bottom-up fatigue cracking. Finally, the strain prediction model of the pavement under the speed and temperature (service time) was fitted to obtain a model that can predict the mechanical response of the pavement under different operating conditions. The findings of this research can provide a reference for the design of asphalt pavement using a large-particle-size crushed stone base treated with fly ash and slag powder.

Abstract:Bitumen pavement design specification provides the design parameters of aggregate macadam,because the parameters are based on low-grade roads,the values are relatively lower,which restrict the development of pavement struc-tures in China.Stress characteristics of typical bitumen pavement structures with graded macadam base are analyzed,through triaxial tests?cyclicload tests and observation of the test roads in four provinces,resilient modulus of macadam in every layer is calculated.The design parameters of grade macadam base are recommended and compared with other countries.
A Design Method on Durable Asphalt Pavement of Flexible Base on Anti-Rutting Performance and Its Application

Abstract:To solve the durability of flexible base asphalt pavement, especially its anti-rutting problem, a design method on durable asphalt pavement of flexible base on anti-rutting performance was put forward in the paper, based on many experiments and calculations. Firstly, a method that asphalt could be selected according to penetration and the anti-rutting factor of its base asphalt was found, which solved the problem of the asphalt selection of the flexible base asphalt mixture design. Meanwhile, a method of skeleton-density structure gradation design was proposed based on the fractal void ratio of coarse aggregate, fractal volume of fine aggregate in coarse aggregate, penetration, fractal dimension of gradation particle size, and rutting tests, which effectively solved in advance the rutting and fatigue performance of flexible base asphalt mixtures. Then, on the basis of the fatigue damage, a calculation method of fatigue life was suggested, which solved the problem that the fatigue damage of asphalt mixtures rarely considered the combined effects of creep damage and fatigue damage. In addition, a calculation method of rutting was formulated based on vehicle dynamic load and ANSYS 16.0 software. Lastly, the feasibility of the design method on durable asphalt pavement of flexible base on anti-rutting performance was verified combining with the real engineering of a supporting project and several numerical calculations and tests.

Abstract:Semi-rigid base materials are used in all pavement grades and are shown to have excellent stability. Furthermore, semi-rigid bases are known for their stiffness and strong frost resistance. However, these semi-rigid base materials are starting to require significant levels of maintenance and repair due to wear and tear. Maintenance is performed primarily to add pavement and resurfacing material, with the hope that the resurfacing layer can withstand large tensile and shear forces at the cracks of the base, thus increasing the overall durability of the pavement. Furthermore, crushing technology used for cement panel maintenance can be used to eliminate cracks in the overlay layer thus improving overall service life expectancy. The studies below study the application of crushing technology to a semi-rigid base and the subsequent alternation to the structural design of the pavement. Furthermore, the mechanical index sensitivities of pavement structures post-rubblization were analyzed using finite elements. Mechanical indexes with high sensitivity were subsequently adopted as structural damage control indexes. These indexes were used to optimize overlay structure and provide a reference for structural design post-rubblization.

Abstract:This study investigates different on-site paving methods for the base course, establishing a model using the computational programme GAMES based on the elastic layered system theory. The impact of the number of paving layers, paving thickness and the bonding condition at interfaces between sub-layers on the fatigue characteristics of the asphalt pavement structure with the cement-stabilized steel slag (CSS) base course is investigated. Furthermore, this study explores the impact of factors such as forming method, curing time and cement content on the fatigue characteristics of the CSS mixtures through laboratory indirect tensile test. The results indicate that the impact of the bonding conditions at paving interfaces between sub-layers due to layered paving on the tensile stress at the bottom of the CSS base course is much greater than that of the asphalt surface course. The tensile stress at the bottom of the CSS base course increases first and then decreases as the paving interface moves from top to bottom, indicating the existence of the most unfavourable paving interface. It is recommended to use vibration compaction method for forming the CSS base course to reduce the paving interface, thereby enhancing the fatigue resistance of the pavement structure.

Abstract:This article studies the practical road performance of recycled materials from construction waste, relying on the paving test section of the supporting project for the Qingdao Cross-Sea Bridge. The research focuses on the construction technology and road performance of using recycled construction waste materials in urban road sub-base construction. Through indoor tests such as sieving and unconfined compressive strength tests, relevant technical indicators were obtained and analyzed. Additionally, periodic core sampling, compaction tests, and rebound deflection tests were conducted on-site according to relevant standards to thoroughly investigate the specific effects of using construction waste in practice and to analyze and evaluate the actual feasibility of the materials for road use. The results indicate that the particle gradation of the construction mix in the test section aligns well with the target gradation, and the dosage of the mixing agent meets the design requirements. The 7-day unconfined compressive strength already satisfied the technical requirements for heavy and extremely heavy traffic on highways as specified in the "Technical Specifications for Construction of Highway Pavement Subbase" (JTG/T F20-2015), with the 14-day strength generally reaching 7 MPa. Core sampling revealed good aggregate gradation, smooth and straight profiles, and the thickness and strength of all parts meet the specifications. The compaction levels met the testing requirements, the surface deflection values showed a decreasing trend, and the deformation resistance was good, consistent with the general development patterns of semi-rigid sub-bases.

Abstract:To meet the needs for higher-ranked roads and traffic loads, rigid slab pavements with cement-bound bedding material and joints were analysed instead of the traditionally used unbound construction method. Since the bearing capacity and drainage of the upper base course are essential, the results of recently introduced laboratory fatigue tests for permeable concrete were considered. Additionally, fatigue tests were also conducted on concrete and natural stone slabs. The structural response of the superstructure was determined by introducing an finite-element-model that considers bound behaviour in the joints and between the slab-bedding-interface. With the derived fatigue criterions and the structural primary response of the FE Model, the deterioration under traffic load can be evaluated. The main objective of this paper is the development of a design procedure for slab pavements with cement-bound joints and bedding on a pervious concrete base course to deduce suitable standard structures in accordance with Austrian directives.

Abstract:Premature deterioration in semi-rigid base asphalt pavement is still considered as one of the main distress related to Chinese highway pavements. There are several reasons for this premature damage and these include poor design and construction, a sudden increase in traffic loading and the dynamic loading of overloaded heavy truck. This paper investigated the effect of vehicle speed and traffic overload on the dynamic response as well as on service life of a semi-rigid base asphalt pavement with typical functional requirements. The study involved simulating the critical stress–strain response at the bottom of asphalt layer under different load weight level and vehicle speed. A large scale three-dimensional viscoelastic finite element model of transient dynamic analysis of the pavement was developed. The Sinotruck HOWO-A7 6×4 and HOWO-A7 8×4 were selected as a representative heavy truck and the associated contact stress effect of each isolated wheel load on the pavement structure was incorporated in the implicit dynamic analysis by a developed DLOAD subroutine. Field dynamic strain measurement from Fiber Bragg Grating strain sensors at the Rizhan-LanKao G1511 highway test section was successfully used to validate the developed model. The results of this study indicate that under heavy moving truck load the response time of the longitudinal, vertical and shearing stress–strain at the bottom of the asphalt layer has both a tensile and compressive component, while the response time history of the transversal stress–strain has only a tensile component. The result also indicated that a decrease in the vehicle speed not only induce a significant increase in the load duration on the structure but also amplified the shock effect induced by the wheel load. The damage caused by the overload is greatly influenced by the axle weight extra extent. The fatigue analysis results revealed that, factors such as overloading or low-speed traffic could result in adverse effect on the service life of pavement. However, as expected the tensile strain at the bottom of the asphalt layer of the proposed semi-rigid base asphalt pavement structure is less than the critical strain of a conventional pavement structure with an ordinary asphalt mix even under critical conditions such as overloading or low-speed traffic.
