Abstract:Architectural energy-saving has become a hotspot in the world. Energy-saving for the existing public buildings could not only reduce energy consumption effectively, but also improve both outdoor environment and indoor healthy comfort to advance the quality of life and work, so it is a work of great significance. Combining with study process on energy-saving renovation for existing public buildings at home and abroad, this article analyzes the status of energy consumption in China and its significance to hope that the renovation work could be done smoothly through the cooperation of users, designers and government.

Abstract:Outlines current situation of building energy consumption in China. Makes new classification of buildings based on the energy performance. Points out the energy consumption features and the potentials of energy saving for each type of buildings. According to the potential savings, presents the key technologies to achieve these savings, including energy optimization in building design process, new technologies in building fabrics, ventilators and exhaust heat recovers, heat pumps, technologies to reduce energy consumption in distribution systems, temperature and humidity independent control system, energy saving optimizing control of building automatic systems, building combined power, heating & cooling system (BCHP), new type of configuration of district heating system as well as high efficiency lightings. Policies are also important to ensure these technologies to be accepted widely. Relative studies for policy making and for policy operation should also be carried on. Lists four projects, including building energy consumption model and the data collection system, energy label system for residential buildings, energy estimation for commercial buildings, and energy label system for home appliances.

Abstract:Based on the theory of Life-Cycle Energy Analysis, the energy consumption of macro-level buildings in China was analyzed, and the key factors in every Life-Cycle phase were pointed out. With the analysis of building life-cycle energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions related to buildings were calculated. It was indicated that the energy consumptions of building materials production and building operation account for largest share in building energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption on building operation and building materials were important to building energy saving and carbon dioxide mitigation.

Abstract:Two main energy performance benchmarking methods under the National Public Buildings Energy-efficiency Design Standards and the Evaluation Standard for Green Building are adopted for saving energy consumption in the public buildings in China. However, several existing barriers and weaknesses in current benchmarking systems prevent the overall energy conservation and carbon reduction from being achieved. This paper explores a new comprehensive energy performance based benchmarking method for addressing the energy saving from both technical and non-technical measures. The overlooked base load energy use is also highlighted in the new method. More importantly, the approach of establishing accurate and efficient data bases and forming sound baselines for assessing and monitoring the energy performance in different types of China's public buildings are recommended in the paper. Governments can play a vital role in improving current benchmarking systems for promote the comprehensive low carbon sustainable development in China's public building sector. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The energy consumption from the building sector accounts for more than 21% of the total in China, where the energy-use intensity of public buildings could reach 3 times that of residential buildings. Energy efficiency improvement (EEI) is considered to be one of the most rapid and cost-effective means for the building sector to achieve carbon neutrality. The Chinese government has carried out a series of policy tool exploration to promote the energy efficiency improvement efforts by public building owners since over a decade ago, but encountered various problems and obstacles. This paper investigated and compared the current status challenges, and problems in the implementation of EEI policy tools in China and developed countries through literature review, field investigations and interviews with experts and stakeholders, and finally also put forward some possible coping strategies for Chinese government. Results indicated that energy grading and labeling, energy benchmarking, carbon-emission trading and energy-consumption quota management were the main 4 EEI policy tools designed based on measured energy consumption data, where the first 3 ones had been widely used over the developed countries but the last one was unique to China. Difficulty in large-scale collection of building energy-consumption data, lack of scientific methods on building energy-use level evaluation, limited data application and feedback, undesirable association between stakeholders, etc., were the main obstacles for achieving the long-term effectiveness of the EEI policy tools. Cooperating with energy supply enterprises to collect data, establishing an effective energy grading system and a closed loop of policy implementation, exploring a new model of building carbon-emission trading and a differential pricing mechanism, combined with innovative financial supports, might be the solutions. The main contribution of this study is that a comprehensive investigation and analysis on the current development status, obstacles, and possible solutions of the public building EEI policy tools in China was carried out, which is expected to provide a reference for the government of China and even the world.

Managing carbon emissions in China through building energy efficiency

Abstract:This paper attempts to analyse the role of building energy efficiency (BEE) in China in addressing climate change mitigation. It provides an analysis of the current situation and future prospects for the adoption of BEE technologies in Chinese cities. It outlines the economic and institutional barriers to large-scale deployment of the sustainable, low-carbon, and even carbon-free construction techniques. Based on a comprehensive overview of energy demand characteristics and development trends driven by economic and demographic growth, different policy tools for cost-effective CO(2) emission reduction in the Chinese construction sector are described. We propose a comprehensive approach combining building design and construction, and the urban planning and building material industries, in order to drastically improve BEE during this period of rapid urban development. A coherent institutional framework needs to be established to ensure the implementation of efficiency policies. Regulatory and incentive options should be integrated into the policy portfolios of BEE to minimise the efficiency gap and to realise sizeable carbon emissions cuts in the next decades. We analyse in detail several policies and instruments, and formulate relevant policy proposals fostering low-carbon construction technology in China. Specifically, Our analysis shows that improving building energy efficiency can generate considerable carbon emissions reduction credits with competitive price under the CDM framework.

Abstract:Facility Management (FM) is well known for its interdisciplinary knowledge and along with the growing number of green buildings and low-carbon buildings, the FM system become increasingly complex. Many practitioners consider Building Information Modeling (BIM) as the most important technology to bring about improvements. The purpose of this paper is to develop a BIM-enabled FM system which integrates FM, BIM and building management system to improve information sharing and monitoring, FM system control, and equipment management. A case study is implemented to validate the feasibility of the BIM-enabled FM system. Four functionalities are demonstrated in detail: Equipment Information Monitoring (EIM), Dynamic Data Display and Warning (D3W), Energy-Saving Analysis (ESA), and Intelligent Fire Escape Route (IFER). The results show that BIM-enabled FM system facilitates the FM more accurate, timely, safe and efficient.

Abstract:Building energy modeling (BEM) has become increasingly used in building energy conservation research. Prototype building models are developed to represent the typical urban building characteristics of a specific building type, meteorological conditions, and construction year. This study included four residential buildings and 11 commercial buildings to represent nationwide building types in China. With consideration of five climate zones and different construction years corresponding to national standards, a total of 151 prototype building models were developed. The building envelope properties, occupancy and energy-related behaviors, and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system characteristics were defined according to the corresponding building energy efficiency design standards, HVAC design standards, and through other sources, such as questionnaire surveys, on-site measurements, and literature, which reflect the real situation of existing buildings in China. Based on the developed prototype buildings, a large database of 9225 models in 270 cities was further developed to facilitate users to simulate building energy in different cities. In conclusion, the developed prototype building models can represent realistic building characteristics and construction practices of the most common residential and commercial buildings in China, serving as an important foundation for BEM. The models can be used for analyses related to building energy conservation research on typical individual buildings, including energy-saving technologies, advanced controls, and new policies, and providing a reference for the development of building energy codes and standards.

Abstract:In response to the long-term instability of energy supply and demand and the challenges posed by climate change, there has been a recognition of the importance of utilizing renewable energy as a sustainable energy source to reduce primary energy consumption. Consequently, the building sector, a significant contributor to energy consumption, is currently exploring various energy-saving technologies that incorporate renewable energy. As the application of renewable energy sources becomes more widespread, there is a growing need for a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) capable of optimizing production and consumption through the efficient integration of operation and control. This paper presents the development and demonstration of a BEMS designed for the integrated operation and control of electrical energy and thermal energy in buildings. In addition, the developed BEMS was verified through empirical operation in two buildings to reduce the building’s average power usage, peak power usage, and energy purchase costs.

Abstract:Effectively controlling and reducing the energy consumption of buildings is the global focus. A considerable variety of research on building energy saving (BES) had been raised in the past. However, most of the previous reviews focus on a single topic within the area, and systematic review and objective analysis are lacking. This study comprehensively reviews 2569 papers on BES published between 1974 and 2020 through bibliometrics, network mapping analysis and in-depth content analysis to fill this research gap. This paper discusses the development evolution and research trends in the field based on the analysis results, and the following three major research themes are identified and discussed: (1) influence factors of building energy consumption (BEC), (2) implementation of BES and (3) barriers and drivers of BES. Lastly, the current study indicates the possible potential research direction in the future; for example, intelligent integration of energy management and control system, quantitative and qualitative analyses of the interaction of BESM and comprehensive summary and quantitative analysis of the driving and hindering factors of BES. The contribution of this study is that it can help scholars and practitioners to have a comprehensive cognition of the research status and trends in the field of BES.

Abstract:<p>The building sector is a critical sector to achieving China's energy conservation and emission reduction targets because it has contributed to more than 30% of the national energy consumption in the past decade. Green building construction has become a nationwide trend with the aim of energy conservation. The science research building of China State Construction Technical Center (CSCTC) has been labeled as the benchmark for energy conservation. Rendering the first-hand data, this study employs an ecological input-output model to analyze its life cycle energy and environmental performance. It further introduces scenario analysis and sensitivity analysis to study the critical factors that affect its energy consumption over its 50-year lifespan. This study has reached several conclusions. First, embodied energy and emissions dominate the life cycle energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a green building. Whilst higher replacement frequency dominates increasing energy consumption, it is indispensable to maintain the well-being of research buildings. Second, installing a rooftop solar photovoltaic system could triple the effect of reducing emissions than that of changing power mix. Moreover, it is imperative to take the functional and safety requirements of research buildings into account when formulating policies.</p>

Abstract:Building energy saving has attracted more and more attention around the world recently. However, there are many challenges and difficulties in optimization for building energy saving due to a large amount of rooms in the buildings. So in this paper, we provide a method to manage the building energy systems for energy saving. In particularly, the proposed method is effective that can be applied to the large-scale buildings. We make the following major contributions. First, an iterative and decentralized solution method is developed. Based on this framework, the optimization problem of building energy management is divided into three sub-optimization problems. This method iteratively solves the three sub-problems to obtain the solution of the building energy management problem. Second, the three sub-problems are converted into mixed integer programming problems, respectively, and they can be solved using CPLEX. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the performance of the method.

Abstract:China has a big population and all countryside are being urbanized recently, more and more buildings are being built with careful considerations of energy saving. Building integrated energy systems are thought to be of priority importance. There are extended energy storage researches and developments for buildings, such as building materials for stabilization of room temperature using the daily and night temperature difference in north China, desiccant materials integrated with buildings used for constant relative humidity control in south China. Solar thermal energy storage using specialized design of hot water tank, phase change materials (PCMs) or pebble stones have been well studied and demonstrated, whereas chemical energy storage capability had been also considered with potential applications. The development of electric battery storage for Photovoltaic (PV) is also highlighted as it is a good opportunity for smart grid development. In modern commercial building, uninterruptible power supplies using rechargeable battery packs and thermal energy storage are currently two of the most common applications for energy storage, while other storage technologies are still at the research stage. The above development of building integrated energy storage opportunities in China are described and analyzed, some demonstration projects are shown in this paper.

Abstract:Many existing and aging buildings were in urgent need of upgrades and renovations, but lack accurate geometric and energy consumption information. This study introduced an unmanned aerial vehicles-based (UAV-based) automated platform for building information modellings (BIM) to generate builidng energy modellings (BEM), which was called the UAV-BIM-BEM platform. The platform enabled the creation of energy models for existing buildings to estimate energy consumption and perform retrofit analysis. A four-story office building in Hong Kong, with dimensions of 52.3 m in length, 14.3 m in width, and 16.5 m in height, was selected as the case study building. Firstly, using UAV oblique photography techniques and path planning algorithms, the building images were transformed into a detailed 3D point cloud model. The point cloud model was provided to Revit to generate the BIM model in IFC format. The IFC file containing the geometric information of the building was then supplied to the AutoBPS-BIM tool, resulting in the generation of the BEM model in EnergyPlus to simulate detailed end-use energy consumption. The annual electricity use intensity (EUI) of the building was estimated to be 145.05 kWh/m 2 . Lastly, the generated energy model was used to evaluate the energy-saving potential of three different measures. The results showed that the electrical energy savings from cooling equipment, lighting systems, and window replacement are 17.22 %, 6.91 %, and 6.61 %, respectively. This research demonstrated that the UAV-BIM-BEM platform has great potential in BEM modeling for existing buildings and building energy retrofitting.

Abstract:Two different DC building energy management system (DC BEMS) integration schemes are investigated according to the respective features and application‐required functions of various system networking structures. Centralized and decentralized control strategies are presented and discussed as well both for buildings with AC–DC transformation and newly built LVDCBDUSs. The first multi‐scenario low‐carbon city‐based future building project "Shenzhen IBR Future Complex" is constructed. Facilitation routes for the new LVDCBDUS to meet economic and efficiency needs are discussed. The demand‐side DC electricity‐using equipment and newly integrated renewables are driving the transformation of power distribution and utilization mode. The building system based on DC technology is emerging as a promising option. In the low‐voltage DC building distribution and utilization system (LVDCBDUS), global energy optimization management and operational control arrangement are key components. To obtain exemplary achievements of those, two different DC building energy management system (DC BEMS) integration schemes are investigated according to the respective features and application‐required functions of various system networking structures. Centralized and decentralized control strategies are presented and discussed for buildings with AC–DC transformation and newly built LVDCBDUSs. On this basis, the centralized DC BEMS and operational control strategy are applied to the first multi‐scenario low‐carbon city‐based future building project—Shenzhen IBR Future Complex. The operation data are recorded and analysed. Problems encountered during the implementation are summarized, and requirements of converter equipment, new technologies and marketization are further discussed to promote the high‐quality development of the LVDCBDUS.

Abstract:Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) play a crucial role in enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability in buildings. This abstract provides a comprehensive review of BEMS, focusing on its components, benefits, challenges, and future trends. BEMS is a centralized system that monitors and controls building services, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, and other systems, to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort. The key components of BEMS include sensors, controllers, communication networks, and user interfaces. These components work together to collect data on building performance, analyze energy consumption patterns, and optimize system operation. One of the primary benefits of BEMS is its ability to reduce energy consumption and costs. By monitoring and controlling building systems based on occupancy schedules and environmental conditions, BEMS can significantly reduce energy waste. Additionally, BEMS can improve occupant comfort and productivity by maintaining optimal indoor environmental conditions. Despite its benefits, BEMS faces several challenges, including high upfront costs, complexity of installation, and integration issues with existing building systems. However, advancements in technology, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing, are addressing these challenges and making BEMS more accessible and cost-effective. Looking ahead, the future of BEMS is promising, with continued advancements in technology driving its adoption and integration into smart building systems. The integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms into BEMS is expected to further improve its energy-saving capabilities and enhance building performance. In conclusion, BEMS is a key technology for improving energy efficiency and sustainability in buildings. By leveraging its components and capabilities, BEMS can help reduce energy consumption, lower costs, and create healthier and more comfortable indoor environments.

Abstract:In the low-carbon construction target system, low-carbon buildings play a crucial role in achieving the goal of reducing carbon emissions. As China's urbanization development continues to deepen, communities have become the primary living environment for both urban and rural residents. Consequently, research on building carbon emissions has shifted from individual buildings to encompassing low-carbon community building facilities. Against the backdrop of digital intelligence and new quality productivity development, promoting the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology for low-carbon transformation in community buildings can effectively contribute to China's low-carbon goals. The utilization of BIM technology enhances planning and construction efficiency across various types of communities while minimizing rework and energy consumption. Furthermore, applying BIM technology to equipment and materials management enables better control over carbon emissions during building operation and maintenance stages, thereby fostering harmonious development between urban energy consumption and the community’s ecological environment.
