Abstract:As an extension of our previous rigorous investigation on the spin correlations in the ground states of the half-filled Hubbard model and the periodic Anderson model [G. S. Tian, Phys. Rev. B 50, 6246 (1994)], in the present paper we study the behavior of these correlation functions at finite temperature. We show rigorously that, at any $T\ensuremath{\ne}0,$ the predominant spin correlations in these systems are antiferromagnetic. Furthermore, based on this result, we also show that a quasi-one (or two)-dimensional itinerant electron ferrimagnet must have a gapless branch of ferromagnetic excitations. This conclusion is consistent with the previous results derived by the spin-wave theory.

In this paper, we use some rigorous results of Lieb and show that the above conclusion still holds for the Hubbard model at half-filling, which is an itinerant electron system.

Abstract:We extend a previous result of ours [G.S. Tian, Phys. Rev. B63 (2001) 224413] on the antiferromagnetic spin correlations in the half-filled Hubbard model at finite temperature to the double-exchange model. To overcome the mathematical difficulty caused by the localized spin freedom in this model, we apply both Zener's argument and the finite-temperature spin-reflection-positivity method to show rigorously that, at any temperature , the spin correlations in the half-filled double-exchange model are predominantly antiferromagnetic. This conclusion is completely consistent with the experimental observations and the previous theoretical results by approximate methods.

Abstract:The periodic Anderson model (PAM) is a fundamental model describing heavy fermion systems. In this paper, we examine the PAM with electron-phonon interactions. Introducing a new analytical method based on operator inequalities, we prove that the ground state at half-filling is unique and a singlet. We also prove that the ground state exhibits short-range antiferromagnetism.

Abstract:In this paper, we show rigorously that there exists the ferrimagnetic long-range order in the ground state of the positive-U Hubbard model at half filling on some bipartite lattices. When N-A > N-B (N-A and N-B are the total site numbers of two sublattices A and B), except for the ferromagnetism which was found by Lieb [Phys. Rev, Lett. 62, 1201 (1989)], there also exists the antiferromagnetic long-range order in the ground state. This result only requires U > O and is independent of the dimension of the lattices.

Abstract:By exploiting the particle-hole symmetries of the Hubbard model, the periodic Anderson model, and the Kondo lattice model at half-filling and by applying a generalized version of Lieb's spin-reflection positivity method, we show that the char,oed gaps of these models are always larger than their spin-excitation gaps. Abstract:The concept of ferrimagnetism was first proposed by Neel to explain why some materials have a macroscopic magnetization but no ferromagnetic long-range order, when the temperature T is lower than a phase transition temperature T(c). In this article, based on a theorem of Lieb and Mattis, we show in a mathematically rigorous way that the global ground states of the generalized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a bipartite lattice with unequal sublattice points have both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic long-range orders with the latter being predominant. Our rigorous results conform to Neel's theory.

Abstract:We study the antiferromagnetic phase transition in the quasi-two-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling for a wide range of the Coulomb interaction U. By using the fluctuation-exchange approximation, we calculate the Neel transition temperature of the system as a function of the Coulomb interaction U. For weak-to-intermediate Coulomb interactions, the present calculation provides a reasonable result for the Neel temperature.
Emergent Properties of the Periodic Anderson Model: a High-Resolution, Real-Frequency Study of Heavy-Fermion Quantum Criticality

Abstract:We study paramagnetic quantum criticality in the periodic Anderson model (PAM) using cellular dynamical mean-field theory, with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) as an impurity solver. The PAM describes an itinerant $c$ band hybridizing with a localized $f$ band. At $T=0$, it exhibits a hybridization tuned Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (KB-QCP) from a Kondo to an RKKY phase. At the KB-QCP, the $f$ band changes character from itinerant to mainly localized, while the $c$ band remains itinerant. We elucidate its nature in detail by performing a high-resolution, real-frequency study of dynamical quantities. NRG allows us to study the quantum critical non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) regime located between $T_{FL}<T_{NFL}$. Surprisingly, self-consistency is essential to stabilize the NFL and the QCP. The Fermi-liquid (FL) scale $T_{FL}$ decreases towards and vanishes at the QCP. At $T=0$, we find the following properties. The $f$ quasiparticle (QP) weight $Z_f$ decreases continuously as the QCP is approached from either side, vanishing only at the QCP. Therefore, $Z_f$ is nonzero in both the Kondo and the RKKY phase; hence, the FL QP comprise $c$ and $f$ electrons in both phases. The Fermi surface (FS) volumes in the two phases differ. Whereas the large-FS Kondo phase has a usual two-band structure, the small-FS RKKY phase has an unexpected three-band structure. We provide a detailed analysis of quasiparticle properties of both the Kondo and the RKKY phase. The FS reconstruction is accompanied by the appearance of a Luttinger surface (LS) on which the $f$ self-energy diverges. The FS and LS volumes are related to the density by a generalized Luttinger sum rule. We interpret the small FS volume and the emergent LS as evidence for $f$-electron fractionalization in the RKKY phase. Our Hall coefficient and specific heat are in good qualitative agreement with experiment.

Abstract:The relationship between charged and spin-excitation gaps of the half-filled Hubbard model, the symmetric periodic Anderson model, and the Kondo lattice model is considered for a general d-dimensional bipartite lattice. In a previous paper [G. S. Tian, Phys. Rev. B 58, 7612 (1998)], it was shown that the quasiparticle gaps of these models at half filling are always larger than their spin excitation gaps. In the present paper, we establish a theorem, which states that the charged gap is also greater than the corresponding spin gap in these models. This conclusion, which has been reached previously for one-dimensional systems based on variational and the density-matrix renormalization-group numerical calculations, is thus put on a rigorous and more general footing. Abstract:The periodic Anderson Hamiltonian of the bulk samarium hexaboride is investigated in this article assuming the presence of ferromagnetic impurities (FM). The problem of large on-site electron-electron repulsion is reformulated in terms of a holonomic constraint using slave-boson technique. The model analysis yields the effective mass of electron and the possibility of the quantum anomalous Hall phase with integer value of the Chern number. Upon using the Fu-Kane-Mele formalism, it is indicated that the surface Hamiltonian without FM may correspond to a strong topological insulator.

Abstract:Heavy fermion materials are compounds in which localized $f$-orbitals hybridize with delocalized $d$ ones, leading to quasiparticles with large renormalized masses. The presence of strongly correlated $f$-electrons at the Fermi level may also lead to long-range order, such as magnetism, or unconventional superconductivity. From a theoretical point of view, the ``standard model'' for heavy fermion compounds is the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM). Despite being extensively scrutinized, its thermodynamic properties in three-dimensional lattices have not been carefully addressed by unbiased methodologies. Here we investigate the 3D PAM employing state-of-the-art finite temperature auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present the behavior of the kinetic energy, the entropy, the specific heat, and the double occupancy as functions of the temperature and the hybridization strength. From these quantities, and by the analysis of the spin-spin correlation functions, we investigate the occurrence of magnetic phase transitions at finite temperatures, and determine the phase diagram of the model, including the behavior of the Néel temperature as a function of the external parameters.

Abstract:In a half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice, the next-nearest-neighbor hopping causes spin frustration, and the collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) state appears as the ground state with suitable parameters. We find that there is a metal-insulator transition in the CAF state at a critical on-site repulsion. When the repulsion is small, the CAF state is metallic, and a van Hove singularity can be close to the Fermi surface, resulting in either a kink or a discontinuity in the magnetic moment. When the on-site repulsion is large, the CAF state is a Mott insulator. A first-order transition from the CAF phase to the antiferromagnetic phase and a second-order phase transition from the CAF phase to the paramagnetic phase are obtained in the phase diagram at zero temperature.

Abstract:The magnetic ground state phase diagram of the disordered Hubbard model at half-filling is computed in dynamical mean-field theory supplemented with the spin resolved, typical local density of states. The competition between many-body correlations and disorder is found to stabilize paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic metallic phases at weak interactions. Strong disorder leads to Anderson localization of the electrons and suppresses the antiferromagnetic long-range order. Slater and Heisenberg antiferromagnets respond characteristically differently to disorder. The results can be tested with cold fermionic atoms loaded into optical lattices.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a generalized anisotropic mixed-spin ferrimagnetic Heisenberg model on an arbitrary bipartite lattice. We prove rigorously that, under some very general conditions, this model has a unique ground state with S z =0 in the XY regime and two degenerate ground states with nonzero magnetization in the Ising regime, respectively. Therefore, the isotropic point of this model is a bifurcation point for its ground states. Furthermore, we also show that, if magnetization of the ground states in the Ising regime is a macroscopic quantity in the thermodynamic limit, then these states have both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic long-range order. In other words, they are ferrimagnetically ordered. These conclusions confirm the previous results derived by numerical calculations on small one-dimensional mixed-spin chains.

Abstract:Using the exact diagonalization and constrained path Monte Carlo methods, we investigate the effects of impurity f-band dispersion on the magnetic properties of Periodic Anderson lattice model in one and two dimensions (square lattice). The model is defined by the Hamiltonian:H=t(di,j,sigma)Sigma(d(isigma)(dagger)d(jsigma)+H.c.)+t(fi,j,sigma)Sigma(f(isigma)(dagger)f(jsigma)+H.c.)+V(i,sigma)Sigma(d(isigma)(dagger)f(isigma)+H.c.)+U(i)Sigman(iup arrow)(f)n(idown arrow)(f)+mu(fi,sigma)Sigman(isigma)(f).We fix t(d)=-1 be the energy scale. When t(f)=0, previous studies [Phy. Rev. B 63, 184 428 (2001)] showed that the system could be in partially saturated ferromagnet phase for low concentrations of conduction electrons. In the noninteracting limit, a nonzero t(f) changes the f-band from being flat to dispersive. By calculating the ground state energy as a function of total spin S we demonstrate that the inclusion of f-band dispersion (t(f)not equal0) could destabilize the ferromagnetic phase depending on values of t(f) and mu(f). Both t(f) and mu(f) have profound effects on the shape of the fermi surface and hence on the magnetic properties of the system, exemplified by the calculation of the fourier transform of the spin-spin correlation functions. Antiferromagnetic correlation is induced by the f-band dispersion. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:We study Fermi gases in a three-dimensional optical lattice with fivefermions per site, i.e. the s-band is completely filled and the p-band withthree-fold degeneracy is half filled. We show that, for repulsive interactionbetween fermions, the system will exhibit spin-3/2 antiferromagnetic order atlow temperature. This conclusion is obtained in strong interaction regime bystrong coupling expansion which yields an isotropic spin-3/2 Heisenberg model,and also in weak interaction regime by Hatree-Fock mean-field theory andanalysis of Fermi surface nesting. Abstract:The fermionic Hubbard model (FHM)1 describes a wide range of physical phenomena resulting from strong electron-electron correlations, including conjectured mechanisms for unconventional superconductivity. Resolving its low-temperature physics is, however, challenging theoretically or numerically. Ultracold fermions in optical lattices2,3 provide a clean and well-controlled platform offering a path to simulate the FHM. Doping the antiferromagnetic ground state of a FHM simulator at half-filling is expected to yield various exotic phases, including stripe order4, pseudogap5, and d-wave superfluid6, offering valuable insights into high-temperature superconductivity7-9. Although the observation of antiferromagnetic correlations over short10 and extended distances11 has been obtained, the antiferromagnetic phase has yet to be realized as it requires sufficiently low temperatures in a large and uniform quantum simulator. Here we report the observation of the antiferromagnetic phase transition in a three-dimensional fermionic Hubbard system comprising lithium-6 atoms in a uniform optical lattice with approximately 800,000 sites. When the interaction strength, temperature and doping concentration are finely tuned to approach their respective critical values, a sharp increase in the spin structure factor is observed. These observations can be well described by a power-law divergence, with a critical exponent of 1.396 from the Heisenberg universality class12. At half-filling and with optimal interaction strength, the measured spin structure factor reaches 123(8), signifying the establishment of an antiferromagnetic phase. Our results provide opportunities for exploring the low-temperature phase diagram of the FHM. Antiferromagnetic phase transition is observed in a three-dimensional fermionic Hubbard system comprising lithium-6 atoms in a uniform optical lattice with approximately 800,000 sites.
