Abstract:The concept of ferrimagnetism was first proposed by Neel to explain why some materials have a macroscopic magnetization but no ferromagnetic long-range order, when the temperature T is lower than a phase transition temperature T(c). In this article, based on a theorem of Lieb and Mattis, we show in a mathematically rigorous way that the global ground states of the generalized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a bipartite lattice with unequal sublattice points have both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic long-range orders with the latter being predominant. Our rigorous results conform to Neel's theory.
Bifurcation of Ground States and Ferrimagnetic Long-Range Order in Anisotropic Mixed-Spin Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we study a generalized anisotropic mixed-spin ferrimagnetic Heisenberg model on an arbitrary bipartite lattice. We prove rigorously that, under some very general conditions, this model has a unique ground state with S z =0 in the XY regime and two degenerate ground states with nonzero magnetization in the Ising regime, respectively. Therefore, the isotropic point of this model is a bifurcation point for its ground states. Furthermore, we also show that, if magnetization of the ground states in the Ising regime is a macroscopic quantity in the thermodynamic limit, then these states have both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic long-range order. In other words, they are ferrimagnetically ordered. These conclusions confirm the previous results derived by numerical calculations on small one-dimensional mixed-spin chains.

Abstract:In the present paper, we study the quantum phase transition in the mixed-spin Heisenberg model with the single-ion anisotropy on a bipartite lattice. We prove rigorously that, when the single-ion anisotropy energy $D$ is positive, the model has a unique ground state with the total spin-$z$ component ${S}_{z}=0$. On the other hand, when the single-ion anisotropy energy is negative and favors the longitudinal spin direction, the global ground state of the system becomes doubly degenerate. Therefore, $D=0$ is the bifurcation point for the global ground state of the system. Furthermore, we show also that, in the latter case, the global ground state of the mixed-spin Heisenberg chain has the ferrimagnetic long-range order. Our conclusions confirm and generalize the previous results derived by numerical calculations on small size samples.

Abstract:As an extension of our previous rigorous investigation on the spin correlations in the ground states of the half-filled Hubbard model and the periodic Anderson model [G. S. Tian, Phys. Rev. B 50, 6246 (1994)], in the present paper we study the behavior of these correlation functions at finite temperature. We show rigorously that, at any $T\ensuremath{\ne}0,$ the predominant spin correlations in these systems are antiferromagnetic. Furthermore, based on this result, we also show that a quasi-one (or two)-dimensional itinerant electron ferrimagnet must have a gapless branch of ferromagnetic excitations. This conclusion is consistent with the previous results derived by the spin-wave theory.

Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of a one-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic system with random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds. In the dilute impurity limit, we generalize the modified spin-wave theory for random spin chains, where local chemical potentials for spin waves in ferromagnetic spin segments are introduced to ensure zero magnetization at finite temperature. This approach successfully describes the crossover from the behavior of a pure one-dimensional ferromagnet at high temperatures to a distinct Curie behavior due to randomness at low temperatures. We discuss the effects of impurity bond strength and concentration on the crossover and low-temperature behavior.

Abstract:To clarify the instability of the ferrimagnetism which is the fundamental magnetism of ferrite, numerical-diagonalization study is carried out for the two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with frustration. We find that the ferrimagnetic ground state has the spontaneous magnetization in small frustration; due to a frustrating interaction above a specific strength, the spontaneous magnetization discontinuously vanishes so that the ferrimagnetic state appears only under some magnetic fields. We also find that, when the interaction is increased further, the ferrimagnetism disappears even under magnetic field.

Abstract:In this paper, we show rigorously that there exists the ferrimagnetic long-range order in the ground state of the positive-U Hubbard model at half filling on some bipartite lattices. When N-A > N-B (N-A and N-B are the total site numbers of two sublattices A and B), except for the ferromagnetism which was found by Lieb [Phys. Rev, Lett. 62, 1201 (1989)], there also exists the antiferromagnetic long-range order in the ground state. This result only requires U > O and is independent of the dimension of the lattices.

In this paper, we use some rigorous results of Lieb and show that the above conclusion still holds for the Hubbard model at half-filling, which is an itinerant electron system.

Abstract:We explore the ground states and quantum phase transitions of two-dimensional, spin S=1/2, antiferromagnets by generalizing lattice models and duality transforms introduced by Sachdev and Jalabert (Mod. Phys. Lett. B 4, 1043 (1990), <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://onsager.physics.yale.edu/p32.pdf" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>). The `minimal' model for square lattice antiferromagnets is a lattice discretization of the quantum non-linear sigma model, along with Berry phases which impose quantization of spin. With full SU(2) spin rotation invariance, we find a magnetically ordered ground state with Neel order at weak coupling, and a confining paramagnetic ground state with bond charge (e.g. spin Peierls) order at strong coupling. We study the mechanisms by which these two states are connected in intermediate coupling. We extend the minimal model to study different routes to fractionalization and deconfinement in the ground state, and also generalize it to cases with a uniaxial anisotropy (the spin symmetry group is then U(1)). For the latter systems, fractionalization can appear by the pairing of vortices in the staggered spin order in the easy-plane; however, we argue that this route does not survive the restoration of SU(2) spin symmetry. For SU(2) invariant systems we study a separate route to fractionalization associated with the Higgs phase of a complex boson measuring non-collinear, spiral spin correlations: we present phase diagrams displaying competition between magnetic order, bond charge order, and fractionalization, and discuss the nature of the quantum transitions between the various states. A strong check on our methods is provided by their application to S=1/2 frustrated antiferromagnets in one dimension: here, our results are in complete accord with those obtained by bosonization and by the solution of integrable models.

Abstract:We propose a novel two-dimensional (2D) frustrated quantum spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg model with alternating ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic magnetic chains along one direction and antiferromagnetic interactions along the other. The (mean-field) ground state is ferrimagnetic in certain range of the interaction space. Spin-wave theory analysis of the reduction of ordered moments at inequivalent spin sites and the instability of the spin waves suggest a quantum phase transition which has the characteristics of both the frustrated 2D antiferromagneticS= 1/2 (J1,J2) model and 1DS1= 1,S2= 1/2 quantum ferrimagnetic model.

Abstract:Magnetic impurities coupled antiferromagnetically to a one-dimensional Heisenberg model are studied by numerical diagonalization of chains of finite clusters. By calculating the binding energy and the correlation function, it is shown that a local singlet develops around each impurity. This holds true for systems with a single impurity, with two impurities, and for impurities forming a lattice. The local character of the singlet is found to be little affected by the presence of other impurity spins. A small effective interaction is found between a pair of impurity spins, which oscillates depending on impurity distances. For impurity lattices, the energy spectrum shows a gap which is found to be much smaller than the binding energy per impurity if the coupling constants are small. For larger coupling constants, it increases to the same order of magnitude as the binding energy, indicating that a local singlet is broken to create excited states. Impurity lattices with ferromagnetic couplings are also studied and their connection to the Haldane problem is discussed.

Abstract:The ground-state properties of the spin-(1/2, 1) mixed-spin XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy (D) are investigated by the infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) method. A ground-state phase diagram including three phases, i.e., a fully polarized phase, an XY phase and a ferrimagnetic phase, is obtained. The ferrimagnetic phase is found to extend to the regions with (Δ > 1, D > 0) and (Δ < 1, D < 0), where Δ denotes the coupling anisotropy between the localized spins. By the discontinuous behavior of bipartite entanglement, quantum phase transitions (QPTs) between the XY phase and the other two phases are verified to be of the first-order. Furthermore, two constant spontaneous magnetization values (Mz = 3/2 and 1/2) are observed in the fully polarized and the ferrimagnetic phases, respectively. In both cases of Δ → +∞ and D → -∞, the ground state tends to the Ising limit. In addition, both the long-range ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders are found to coexist in the whole ferrimagnetic phase.
Thermodynamics of Heisenberg ferromagnets with arbitrary spin in a magnetic field

Abstract:The thermodynamic properties (magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, transverse and longitudinal correlation lengths, specific heat) of one- and two-dimensional ferromagnets with arbitrary spin S in a magnetic field are investigated by a second-order Green-function theory. In addition, quantum Monte Carlo simulations for S= 1/2 and S=1 are performed using the stochastic series expansion method. A good agreement between the results of both approaches is found. The field dependence of the position of the maximum in the temperature dependence of the susceptibility fits well to a power law at low fields and to a linear increase at high fields. The maximum height decreases according to a power law in the whole field region. The longitudinal correlation length may show an anomalous temperature dependence: a minimum followed by a maximum with increasing temperature. Considering the specific heat in one dimension and at low magnetic fields, two maxima in its temperature dependence for both the S= 1/2 and S = 1 ferromagnets are found. For S>1 only one maximum occurs, as in the two-dimensional ferromagnets. Relating the theory to experiments on the S= 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional copper salt TMCuC [(CH_3)_4NCuCl_3], a fit to the magnetization as a function of the magnetic field yields the value of the exchange energy which is used to make predictions for the occurrence of two maxima in the temperature dependence of the specific heat.

Ferrimagnetism of ultracold fermions in a multi-band Hubbard system

Abstract:Strongly correlated materials feature multiple electronic orbitals which are crucial to accurately understand their many-body properties, from cuprate materials to twisted bilayer graphene. In such multi-band models, quantum interference can lead to dispersionless bands whose large degeneracy gives rise to itinerant magnetism even with weak interactions. Here, we report on signatures of a ferrimagnetic state realized in a Lieb lattice at half-filling, characterized by antialigned magnetic moments with antiferromagnetic correlations, concomitant with a finite spin polarization. We demonstrate its robustness when increasing repulsive interactions from the non-interacting to the Heisenberg regime, and study its emergence when continuously tuning the lattice unit cell from a square to a Lieb geometry. Our work paves the way towards exploring exotic phases in related multi-orbital models such as quantum spin liquids in kagome lattices and heavy fermion behavior in Kondo models.

Magnetic and quantum disordered phases in triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Abstract:We study, within the Schwinger-boson approach, the ground-state structure of two Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice: the J1-J2 model, which includes a next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2, and the spatially-anisotropic J1-J'1 model, in which the nearest-neighbor coupling takes a different value J'1 along one of the bond directions. The motivations for the study of these systems range from general theoretical questions concerning frustrated quantum spin models to the concrete description of the insulating phase of some layered molecular crystals. For both models, the inclusion of one-loop corrections to saddle-point results leads to the prediction of nonmagnetic phases for particular values of the parameters J1/J2 and J'1/J1. In the case of the J1-J2 model we shed light on the existence of such disordered quantum state, a question which is controversial in the literature. For the J1-J'1 model our results for the ground-state energy, quantum renormalization of the pitch in the spiral phase, and the location of the nonmagnetic phases, nicely agree with series expansions predictions.

Abstract:We present a systematic study of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in staggered magnetic fields in two dimensions. To mimic real materials, we consider a system of coupled, antiferromagnetic chains, whose interchain interaction can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic. When the staggered field is commensurate with the magnetic interactions, an energy gap opens immediately and follows a power law as a function of the applied field, similar to the situation in one dimension. When the field competes with the interactions, a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs from a gapless, magnetically ordered phase at low fields to a gapped, disordered regime. We use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method to compute the staggered moment of the ordered phases and the spin gap of the disordered phases. We deduce the phase diagrams as functions of the anisotropy ratio and the applied field, and calculate the scaling behavior of the models in both quantities. We show that in the competitive case, the staggered field acts to maintain a regime of quasi-1D behavior around the QPT, and we discuss as a consequence the nature of the crossover from one-dimensional (1D) to 2D physics.
The Effect of an External Magnetic-Field on the Mlro in the Global Ground-States of Some Antiferromagnetic Models

Abstract:We study the effect of an external magnetic field on magnetic long-range order (MLRO) in the global ground states of the quantum XY model and the isotropic Heisenberg model on the simple cubic lattices. We shall rigorously prove that, while an external magnetic field (staggered in the antiferromagnetic case) which favours MLRO in a specific spin direction, say the x-direction, is turned on, it completely suppresses the MLRO in the perpendicular spin directions in the global ground states of these models.

Abstract:Using supersymmetric quantum mechanics we construct the quasi-exactly solvable (QES) potentials with arbitrary two known eigenstates. The QES potential and the wave functions of the two energy levels are expressed by some generating function the properties of which determine the state numbers of these levels. Choosing different generating functions we present a few explicit examples of the QES potentials.

Magnetic Impurity in a Tonks Gas of Fermions

Abstract: In this letter we consider a magnetic impurity in a one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Fermi gas with infinitely strong repulsive interaction between fermions. We rigorously prove that, independent of whether the magnetic coupling between impurity and fermions is ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic, the ground state is always a fully polarized ferromagnetic state for the itinerant fermions. This ferromagnetism can be understood as a cooperative effect of avoiding frustration of magnetic coupling during fermion hopping and the large spin degeneracy of a fermion Tonks gas. By numerically diagonalizing a finite size system, we show that the spin gap first increases linearly with magnetic coupling strength in the weak coupling regime, while decreases in the strong coupling regime. Our results show that a magnetic impurity in a strongly correlated gas can exhibit effect different from the Kondo effect as in a weakly correlated Fermi liquid.
