Abstract:We investigate the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a 3$\times$3 checkerboard lattice structure in a longitudinal magnetic field. By using the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo (SSE-QMC) method, we obtain the properties of the non-plateau XY phase, 1/9, 3/9, 5/9, 7/9 magnetization plateau phases, and fully polarized phase. Then, we determine the precise phase transition critical points belonging to the 3D XY universality class through finite-size scaling. Moreover, we study the longitudinal and transverse dynamic spin structure factors of this model in different phases. For the non-plateau XY phase, the energy spectra present a gap between the low-energy gapless branch and the high-energy part under the competition of magnetic field and interaction. The gapless branch can be described by the spin wave theory in the canted antiferromagnetic phase of the effective "block spin" model. In the magnetization plateau phase, we identify that the excitation arises from localized disturbances within the sublattice, which are capable of spreading in momentum space. This study offers theoretical insights and interpretations for the characteristics of the ground state and the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum in two-dimensional quantum magnetic materials. Specifically, it focuses on materials with a checkerboard unit cell structure and odd-spin configurations under the influence of a longitudinal magnetic field.

Ground states of quantum antiferromagnets in two dimensions

Abstract:We explore the ground states and quantum phase transitions of two-dimensional, spin S=1/2, antiferromagnets by generalizing lattice models and duality transforms introduced by Sachdev and Jalabert (Mod. Phys. Lett. B 4, 1043 (1990), <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://onsager.physics.yale.edu/p32.pdf" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>). The `minimal' model for square lattice antiferromagnets is a lattice discretization of the quantum non-linear sigma model, along with Berry phases which impose quantization of spin. With full SU(2) spin rotation invariance, we find a magnetically ordered ground state with Neel order at weak coupling, and a confining paramagnetic ground state with bond charge (e.g. spin Peierls) order at strong coupling. We study the mechanisms by which these two states are connected in intermediate coupling. We extend the minimal model to study different routes to fractionalization and deconfinement in the ground state, and also generalize it to cases with a uniaxial anisotropy (the spin symmetry group is then U(1)). For the latter systems, fractionalization can appear by the pairing of vortices in the staggered spin order in the easy-plane; however, we argue that this route does not survive the restoration of SU(2) spin symmetry. For SU(2) invariant systems we study a separate route to fractionalization associated with the Higgs phase of a complex boson measuring non-collinear, spiral spin correlations: we present phase diagrams displaying competition between magnetic order, bond charge order, and fractionalization, and discuss the nature of the quantum transitions between the various states. A strong check on our methods is provided by their application to S=1/2 frustrated antiferromagnets in one dimension: here, our results are in complete accord with those obtained by bosonization and by the solution of integrable models.

Magnetic plateaus and jumps in a spin-1/2 ladder with alternate Ising-Heisenberg rungs: a field dependent study

Abstract:We study a frustrated two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with alternate Ising and isotropic Heisenberg rung exchange interactions, whereas, interactions along legs and diagonals are Ising type. The ground-state (GS) of this model has four exotic phases: (i) the stripe rung ferromagnet (SRFM), (ii) the anisotropic anti-ferromagnet (AAFM), (iii) the Dimer, and (iv) the stripe leg ferromagnet (SLFM) in absence of any external magnetic field. In this work, we study the effect of externally applied longitudinal and transverse fields on GS phases and note that there are two plateaus with per-site magnetization $1/4$ and $1/2$. There is another plateau at zero magnetization due to a finite spin gap in the presence of a longitudinal field. The exact diagonalization (ED) and the transfer matrix (TM) methods are used to solve the model Hamiltonian and the mechanism of plateau formation is analyzed using spin density, quantum fidelity, and quantum concurrence. In the (i) SRFM phase, Ising exchanges are dominant for all spins but the Heisenberg rungs are weak, and therefore, the magnetization shows a continuous transition as a function of the transverse field. In the other three phases [(ii)-(iv)], the Ising dimer rungs are weak and those are broken first to reach a plateau with per-site magnetization $1/4$, having a large gap which is closed by further application of the transverse field.

Abstract:Magnetization plateaus in quantum spin systems emerges in two-dimensional frustrated systems such as kagome lattice. The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on square-kagome lattice is also appropriate for the study of magnetization plateau. Motivated by recent experimental finding of such a square-kagome lattice with nonequivalent three bonds, we investigate the phase diagrams and magnetization plateaus of the lattice by the exact diagonalization method. In addition to previously reported the 1/3 and 2/3 plateaus in the model with two equivalent bonds, we find a new 2/3 plateau whose magnetic structure is characterized by spontaneously broken four-fold rotational symmetry. The plateau appears only in the case of three nonequivalent bonds. We propose the possibility of finding plateaus including the new one.

Finite-temperature phase transitions in $S=1/2$ three-dimensional Heisenberg magnets from high-temperature series expansions

Abstract:Many frustrated spin models on three-dimensional (3D) lattices are currently being investigated, both experimentally and theoretically, and develop new types of long-range orders in their respective phase diagrams. They present finite-temperature phase transitions, most likely in the Heisenberg 3D universality class. However, the combination between the 3D character and frustration makes them hard to study. We present here several methods derived from high-temperature series expansions (HTSEs), which give exact coefficients directly in the thermodynamic limit up to a certain order; for several 3D lattices, supplementary orders than in previous literature are reported for the HTSEs. We introduce an interpolation method able to describe thermodynamic quantities at $T > T_c$, which we use here to reconstruct the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat and to extract universal and non-universal quantities (for example critical exponents, temperature, energy, entropy, and other parameters related to the phase transition). While the susceptibility associated with the order parameter is not usually known for more exotic long-range orders, the specific heat is indicative of a phase transition for any kind of symmetry breaking. We present examples of applications on ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic models on various 3D lattices and benchmark our results whenever possible.

Abstract:By the simple updated infinite Lime-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) algorithm, the magnetization process and phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin-1 Ising model with single-ion anisotropy on he Z=3 Bettie lattice have been investigated. For the antiferromagnetic case, three magnetization plateaus, i.e., M-z=0, 1/2, and 1, are observed. The novel 1/2 plateau state, which was reported on the 1D spin chain previously, is shown to exist on the Z=3 Bethe lattice. For this classical model without any quantum fluctuations, the 1/2 magnetization plateau is suggested to be caused by the stability of spatially modulated spin structures. Furthermore, in the M-z = 0 plateau, two different phases (an ideal Neel phase and an ideal large-D phase) are distinguished. The phase boundaries are determined exactly, and a rich phase diagram including four phases is obtained. In addition, the magnetization process of the ferromagnetic case is also discussed, but a relatively simple phase diagram without 1/2 plateau phase is determined. Phase diagram for a class of spin-half Heisenberg models interpolating between the square-lattice, the triangular-lattice and the linear chain limits

Abstract:We study the spin-half Heisenberg models on an anisotropic two-dimensional lattice which interpolates between the square-lattice at one end, a set of decoupled spin-chains on the other end, and the triangular-lattice Heisenberg model in between. By series expansions around two different dimer ground states and around various commensurate and incommensurate magnetically ordered states, we establish the phase diagram for this model of a frustrated antiferromagnet. We find a particularly rich phase diagram due to the interplay of magnetic frustration, quantum fluctuations and varying dimensionality. There is a large region of the usual 2-sublattice Neél phase, a 3-sublattice phase for the triangular-lattice model, a region of incommensurate magnetic order around the triangular-lattice model, and regions in parameter space where there is no magnetic order. We find that the incommensurate ordering wavevector is in general altered from its classical value by quantum fluctuations. The regime of weakly coupled chains is particularly interesting and appears to be nearly critical.

Abstract:We look into the quantum phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnet on the square lattice with degenerate Shastry-Sutherland ground states, for which only a schematic phase diagram is known so far. Many exotic phases were proposed in the schematic phase diagram by the use of exact diagonalization on very small system sizes. In our present work, an important extension of this antiferromagnet is introduced and investigated in the thermodynamic limit using triplon mean-field theory. Remarkably, this antiferromagnet shows a stable plaquette spin-gapped phase like the original Shastry-Sutherland antiferromagnet, although both of these antiferromagnets differ in the Hamiltonian construction and ground state degeneracy. We propose a sublattice columnar dimer phase which is stabilized by the second and third neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange interactions. There are also some commensurate and incommensurate magnetically ordered phases, and other spin-gapped phases which find their places in the quantum phase diagram. Mean-field results suggest that there is always a level-crossing phase transition between two spin gapped phases, whereas in other situations, either a level-crossing or a continuous phase transition happens.

Abstract:Motivated by very recent experimental observations of the 1/9 magnetization plateaus in YCu$_3$(OH)$_{6+x}$Br$_{3-x}$ and YCu$_3$(OD)$_{6+x}$Br$_{3-x}$, our study delves into the magnetic field-induced phase transitions in the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice using the variational Monte Carlo technique. We uncover a phase transition from a zero-field Dirac spin liquid to a field-induced magnetically disordered phase that exhibits the 1/9 magnetization plateau. Through a comprehensive analysis encompassing the magnetization distribution, spin correlations, chiral order parameter, topological entanglement entropy, ground-state degeneracy, Chern number and excitation spectrum, we pinpoint the phase associated with this magnetization plateau as a chiral $\mathbb{Z}_3$ topological quantum spin liquid and elucidate its diverse physical properties.

Abstract:Motivated by recent progress on field-induced phase transitions in quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets, we study the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with Ising anisotropic interchain couplings under a longitudinal magnetic field via large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The interchain interaction is shown to enhance longitudinal spin correlations and stabilize an incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave order at intermediate fields. With increasing field, the ground state changes to a canted antiferromagnetic order and the magnetization fully saturates above a quantum critical point, which is shown to fall into the (3 + 2)D XY universality. In the quantum critical regime, the system experiences a fascinating dimensional crossover to a universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) as demonstrated by the continuous change of the critical exponent of the specific heat. The TLL behavior extends to a broad field and temperature regime, as characterized by the calculated NMR relaxation rate 1/T-1. Our results not only explain a number of puzzling observations in a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet YbAlO3 but also lay down a concrete ground to the study on these materials in general.

Abstract:The ground state phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of a spin-1 bond-alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with a single-ion anisotropy in longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are investigated jointly by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation, the linearized tensor renormalization group and the density matrix renormalization group methods. It is found that in the magnetic field-bond alternating ratio plane six phases such as singlet dimer, Haldane, two Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, 1/2 magnetization plateau and spin polarized phases are identified in a longitudinal field, while in a transverse field there are fives phases including singlet dimer, Haldane, Z_2 symmetry breaking, quasi-1/2 magnetization plateau and quasi spin polarized phases. A reentrant behavior of the staggered magnetization in a transverse field is observed. The quantum critical behaviors in longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are disclosed to fall into different universality classes with corresponding conformal field central charge c=1 and 1/2, respectively. The experimental data of the compound NTENP under both longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are nicely fitted, and the Luttinger liquid behavior of low temperature specific heat experimentally observed is also confirmed.

Abstract:The mixed spin-1 and spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with regularly alternating monomeric spin-1 sites and square-plaquette spin-1/2 sites is investigated using variational technique, localized-magnon approach, exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The investigated model has in a magnetic field an extraordinarily rich ground-state phase diagram, which includes the uniform and cluster-based Haldane phases, two ferrimagnetic phases of Lieb-Mattis type, two quantum spin liquids and two bound magnon crystals in addition to the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. The lowest-energy eigenstates in a highly-frustrated parameter region belong to flat bands and hence, low-temperature thermodynamics above the bound magnon-crystal ground states can be satisfactorily described within the localized-magnon approach. The variational method provides an exact evidence for the magnon-crystal phase with a character of the monomer-tetramer ground state at zero field, while another magnon-crystal phase with a single bound magnon at each square plaquette is found in a high-field region. A diversity of quantum ground states gives rise to manifold zero-temperature magnetization curves, which may involve up to four wide intermediate plateaus at zero, one-sixth, one-third and two-thirds of the saturation magnetization, two quantum spin-liquid regions and two tiny plateaus at one-ninth and one-twelfth of the saturation magnetization corresponding to the fragmentized cluster-based Haldane phases.

Phase Transition Of The Spin-One Square-Lattice Anisotropic Heisenberg Model

Abstract:The coupled cluster method (CCM) is applied to the spin-one anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) on the square lattice at zero temperature using a new high-order CCM ground-state formalism for general quantum spin number ($s \ge 1/2$). The results presented constitute the first such application of this new formalism, and they are shown to be among the most accurate results for the ground-state energy and sublattice magnetisation of this model as yet determined. We ``track'' the solution to the CCM equations at a given level of approximation with respect to the anisotropy parameter, $\Delta$, from the trivial Ising limit ($\Delta \to \infty$) down to a critical value $\Delta_c$, at which point this solution terminates. This behaviour is associated with a phase transition in the system, and hence a primary result of these high-order CCM calculations is that they provide an accurate and unbiased (i.e., {\it ab initio}) estimation of the position of the quantum phase transition point as a function of the anisotropy parameter. Our result is, namely, that this point occurs at (or slightly below) the isotropic Heisenberg point at $\Delta=1$, for this model.

Abstract:By utilizing tensor-network-based methods, we investigate the zero- and finite-temperature properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAF) model on an infinite Husimi lattice that contains 3/2 sites per triangle. The ground state of this model is found to possess vanishing local magnetization and is featureless; the spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions are verified to decay exponentially; and its ground-state energy per site is determined to be $e_0=-0.4343(1)$, which is very close to that [$e_0=-0.4386(5)$] of the intriguing kagome HAF model. The magnetization curve shows the absence of a zero-magnetization plateau, implying a gapless excitation. A $1/3$-magnetization plateau with spin up-up-down state is observed, which is selected and stabilized by quantum fluctuations. A ground state phase diagram under magnetic fields is presented. Moreover, both magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat are studied, whose low-temperature behaviors reinforce the conclusion that the HAF model on the infinite Husimi lattice owns a gapless and featureless spin liquid ground state.

Abstract:Magnetic properties of spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic three-leg Heisenberg ladders, where antiferromagnetic interactions in legs are J1, J2 and J1 respectively and in the rungs are J⊥, have been investigated by bond-mean field method. As J⊥ changes, magnetization curves show different behavior. For J⊥=0.5, there are cusps in magnetization curves, while for J⊥=3.0, the 1/3 magnetization plateau appears, which can be explained by energy spectra. Furthermore, for J⊥=3.0 the 1/3 magnetization plateaus will become wider or narrow down with J2 changing. In addition, the mean-field bond parameters and the concurrences, which confirm the phase transitions, are also studied.
Exact staggered dimer ground state and its stability in a two-dimensional magnet

Abstract:Finding an exact solution for a realistic interacting quantum many-body problem is often challenging. There are only a few problems where an exact solution can be found, usually in a narrow parameter space. Here, we propose a spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice with spatial anisotropy and bond depletion for the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions but not for the next-nearest-neighbor interactions. This model has an \emph{exact} and \emph{unique} dimer ground state at $J_2/J_1=1/2$; a dimer state is a product state of spin-singlets on dimers (here, staggered nearest-neighbor bonds). We examine this model by employing the bond-operator mean-field theory and exact diagonalization. These analytical and numerical methods precisely affirm the correctness of the dimer ground state at the exact point ($J_2/J_1=1/2$). As one moves away from the exact point, the dimer order melts and vanishes when the spin gap becomes zero. The mean-field theory with harmonic approximation indicates that the dimer order persists for $-0.35\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim 1.35$. However, in non-harmonic approximation, the upper critical point lowers by $0.28$ to $1.07$, but the lower critical point remains intact. The exact diagonalization results suggest that the latter approximation fares better. The model reveals Néel order below the lower critical point and stripe magnetic order above the upper critical point. It has a topologically equivalent model on a honeycomb lattice where the nearest-neighbor interactions are still spatial anisotropic, but the bond depletion shifts into the isotropic next-neighbor interactions. Moreover, these models can also be generalized in the three dimensions.

The magnetization process of classical Heisenberg magnets with non-coplanar cuboc ground states

Abstract:We consider a classical Heisenberg model on the kagomé and the square kagomé lattice, where at zero magnetic field non-coplanar cuboctahedral ground states with twelve sublattices exist if suitable exchange couplings are introduced between the other neighbors. Such 'cuboc ground states' are remarkable because they allow for chiral ordering. For these models, we discuss the magnetization process in an applied magnetic field $H$ by both numerical and analytical methods. We find some universal properties that are present in all models. The magnetization curve $M(H)$ usually contains only non-linear components and there is at least one magnetic field driven phase transition. Details of the $M(H)$ curve such as the number and characteristics (continuous or discontinuous) of the phase transitions depend on the lattice and the details of the exchange between the further neighbors. Typical features of these magnetization processes can already be derived for a paradigmatic 12 spin model that we define in this work.

It is known that, in both cases of weak and strong next-nearest-neighbor interactions, this system reveals a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturated magnetization. We examine the stability of this magnetization plateau when the amplitude of next-nearest-neighbor interactions is varied. We find that a nonplateau region appears between the plateau phases in the cases of weak and strong next-nearest-neighbor interactions.

Abstract:The ground state, the entropy and the magnetic Grüneisen parameter of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on a double sawtooth ladder are rigorously investigated using the classical transfer-matrix technique. The model includes the XXZ interaction between the interstitial Heisenberg dimers, the Ising coupling between nearest-neighbor spins of the legs and rungs, and additional cyclic four-spin Ising term in each square plaquette. For a particular value of the cyclic four-spin exchange we found in the ground-state phase diagram of the Ising Heisenberg ladder a quadruple point, at which four different ground states coexist together. During an adiabatic demagnetization process a fast cooling accompanied with an enhanced magnetocaloric effect can be detected nearby this quadruple point. The ground-state phase diagram of the Ising-Heisenberg ladder is confronted with the zero-temperature magnetization process of the purely quantum Heisenberg ladder, which is calculated by using exact diagonalization (ED) based on the Lanczos algorithm for a finite-size ladder of 24 spins and the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations for a finite-size ladder with up to 96 spins. Some indications of existence of intermediate magnetization plateaus in the magnetization process of the full Heisenberg model for a small but non-zero four-spin Ising coupling were found. The DMRG results reveal that the quantum Heisenberg double sawtooth ladder exhibits a quantum Luttinger spin-liquid phase that is absent in the Ising-Heisenberg counterpart model. Except this difference the magnetic behavior of the full Heisenberg model is quite analogous to its simplified Ising-Heisenberg counterpart and hence, one may bring insight into the fully quantum Heisenberg model from rigorous results for the Ising-Heisenberg model.
