Abstract:This paper deals with the bending and vibration analyses of moderately thick plates strengthened by a bonded thin composite plate. In the analytical formulation, the two adherends and the adhesive layer are all modeled as shear deformable plates using the first-order shear deformation plate theory. A set of beam eigenfunctions, which satisfies different kinds of geometric boundary conditions, is adopted for a strengthened plate and Rayleigh–Ritz method is employed with this set of admissible functions to determine the deflections and stresses in the case of bending analysis, and natural frequencies in the case of linear eigenvalue problems of vibration. Several test problems are examined to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. Numerical results are presented that relate to the performance of reinforced concrete slabs bonded with a thin composite plate under various boundary conditions, in which a reinforced concrete slab strengthened by a thin steel plate is treated as a limiting case. The effects of the bonded plate on the bending and vibration characteristics of reinforced concrete slabs are also studied.
