Abstract:A facile method for constructing superhydrophobic, conductive, and transparent/translucent coatings is presented. Pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are first noncovalently (wrapped) modified by an organic inorganic hybrid of an amphiphilic copolymer of styrene and malcic anhydride and silica with the existence of gamma-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (a silane coupling agent). The modified MWNTs were mixed with tetraethyl orthosilicate in ethanol, air sprayed, coated with a fluoroalkylsilane, and then heat treated to obtain the superhydrophobic, conductive, and transparent/translucent coatings. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the coatings have a micrometer- and nanometer-scale hierarchical structure similar to that flows leaves; therefore, they show both high water contact angles (>160 degrees) and low sliding angles (<2 degrees). The coatings also exhibit good transmittance and greatly improved conductivities. This method is convenient, inexpensive, and easy to scale up. Moreover, it does not require any chemical modification of the MWNTs or use any harsh chemicals.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes coated with SnO2 layers of different thickness were prepared by a simple wet-chemical method. The samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The thickness of the coatings can be easily controlled by changing the synthesis conditions, such as pH value of the solution and hydrolysis time. The smoothness and uniformity of the SnO2 layers were greatly influenced by the addition of thioglycolic acid, which was used as connecter. The samples prepared by using thioglycolic acid showed very smooth and uniform coating layers, without cracks and broken segments. The growth behavior of the coating layer is also discussed.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been successfully modified with ZnO nanostructures by zinc–ammonitum complex ion covalently attached to the MWNTs through the C–N bonds. Flower-like ZnO on the tips of MWNTs and ZnO nanoparticles on the surface of MWNTs have been obtained, respectively, via adjusting the reaction time. The modified MWNTs have been characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. A growth mechanism has been proposed in which the soaking time plays a key role in controlling the size, morphology, and site of ZnO nanostructures. Photoluminescence properties of the as-synthesized products have also been investigated.

Abstract:An atmospheric‐pressure plasma system is developed and is used to treat carbon nanotube assemblies, producing a hybrid carbon‐zinc structure. This system is integrated into a floating‐catalyst chemical vapor deposition furnace used for the synthesis of macroscopic assemblies of carbon nanotubes to allow for the in‐line, continuous, and single‐step production of nano‐composite materials. Material is deposited from a sacrificial zinc wire in the form of nanoparticles and can coat the surface of the individual carbon nanotubes as they form. Additionally, it is found that the deposited materials penetrate further into the carbon nanotube matrix than a comparable post‐synthesis deposition, improving the uniformity of the material through the thickness. Thus, a single‐step metal‐based coating and carbon nanotube synthesis process which can form the basis of production scale manufacturing of metal‐carbon nanotube composite materials with an atmospheric‐pressure plasma system are demonstrated.

Abstract:A layer-by-layer (LBL) approach has been developed to synthesize uniform CNT-metal nanocomposites at room temperature. As the representative examples. CNT-Pt, CNT-Pd, and CNT-Sn nanocomposites have been fabricated to illustrate the basic idea presented here. The morphology, structure, and composition of the as-synthesized products have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. The effects of the charge density oil the CNTs, the reduction rate, and the sonication process oil the formation of Uniform CNT-metal nanocomposites have been investigated.

Abstract:A thiol-functionalized poly (phenylacetylene) has been synthesized and characterized. The disappearance of the characteristic vibrations at 3312 and 776 cm(-1) (C=C-H) and 2106 cm(-1) (C=C), together with the vanishing of the chemical shifts at 3.0 (C=C-H) and the appearance of the chemical shifts at 6.4 (C=C-H) indicate the polymerization of the thiol-containing monomer. The hybrid of thiol-functionalized poly(phenylacetylene) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) showed good solubility in organic solvents. Meanwhile,the wrapping of the polymer chains on MWNTs led to the surface functionalization. By aid of the interactions between thiol groups and zinc cations, ZnO nanoparticles were assembled onto out-shells of the hybrids. These results suggested a novel route to the fabrication of multi-component nanostructures.

Abstract:Background: This research indicated that such abstract are more informative and more readable, in field of preparation of nanocomposite materials. Aim: The purpose of this work represented by decoration of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) with nanoparticles using co-precipitation method and exhibit different physical properties from those of CNTs alone and its appropriate for this particular journal. Methods: Preparation MWCNTs surface by Ag/ZnO nanoparticles using two steps represented by acid treatment of MWCNTs in a mixture acid of sulfuric acid (95% H2SO4) and nitric acid (65% HNO3) at 3:1 ratio and second step represented by decoration of Ag/ZnO nanoparticles on FMWCNTs using co-precipitation method to prepare ZnO/Ag nanoparticles decorated on F-MWCNTs as nanocomposite material. Results: The results of this work reveal the decoration of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles on the FMWCNTs was achieved without any impurities as shown in XRD, Raman spectra and FTIR and FESEM observations reveal that Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles have spherical morphologies and adhered on the functionalized MWCNTs, with diameters are about 22-30 nm. Also it is clear that there were no any other materials on the surface of F-MWCNTs except ZnO and Ag which verifies the results obtained from XRD and EDS analysis. Conclusion: In this article, Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles have been successfully decorated on to modified MWCNTs by an in-situ co-precipitation method. From XRD results, it can be seen that the (002) peak of MWCNTs slightly increased after the addition of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles. Raman spectra and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of Zn-C or Zn-O-C bonds between acid-treated MWCNTs and Ag-doped zinc oxide. The FESEM and EDS analysis revealed that the decoration of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles on the F-MWCNTs was achieved without any impurities. Finally, the small sizes Agdoped ZnO NPs deposited on F-MWCNTs make it very promising for biomedicine applications.

Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize magnetic nanoparticle and carbon nanotube (CNT) core-shell nanostructures, such as CoO/CNTs and Mn3O4/CNTs, by the nonaqueous solvothermal treatment of metal carbonyl on CNT templates using hexane as the solvent. The morphological and structural characterizations indicate that numerous cubic CoO or tetragonal Mn3O4 nanoparticles are deposited on the surfaces of the CNTs to form CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. It is revealed that the hydrophobic interaction between nanoparticles and CNTs in hexane plays the critical role for the formation of CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. A physical property measurement system (PPMS-9, Quantum Design) analysis indicates that the CoO/CNT core-shell nanostructures show weak ferromagnetic performance at 300 K due to the ferromagnetic Co clusters and the uncompensated surface spin states, while the Mn3O4/CNT core-shell nanostructures display ferromagnetic behavior at low temperature (34.5 K), which transforms into paramagnetic behavior with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes coated with crystalline tin oxide by a simple chemical-solution route are reported. The room-temperature chemical treatment results in a nominally complete and uniform coating over the entire outer surface of singular nanotubes, nanotube bundles, and also fullerene-like nanoparticles. The samples have been characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction. The coating is composed of interconnected SnO2 nanoparticles of sizes between 1-6 nm. Typically, the coatings have a total thickness on the order of the constituent nanoparticle size.

Abstract:This study focuses on in situ synthesis of CdS nanoparticles on the surfaces of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. By chemical reaction of cadmium chloride and thioacetamide in the solution with carbon nanotubes, which were pretreated by air oxidization and acid modification, cadmium sulfide nanoparticles densely supported on carbon nanotubes with 10nm size and homogeneous distribution were prepared. The composite material with the composite structure of CdS decorating the nanotube surfaces was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction pattern. The CdS nanoparticles are of cubic crystal structure, show good adhesion to the nanotubes. This method can be extended to prepare other inorganic nanoparticle–carbon nanotube composites.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/CdS core/shell heterostructures have been successfully synthesized via a simple solution-phase method. The thickness of CdS shells can be facilely tuned by either the reaction temperature or time. The CdS nanoparticles are first formed directly on the surface of MWCNT, and then a uniform CdS sheath is yielded via orientated aggregation processes. The present work provides a simple route to obtain MWCNT-based core/shell heterostructures and thus is of wide interest for the studies of nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:The surfactant-capped ZnS nanoparticulate multilayer film has been fabricated by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. ZnS LB firm was investigated by the small-angle x-ray diffraction(XRD), atomic force microscopy(AFM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The results indicate that ZnS nanoparticulate LB film is one-dimensional superlattice.

Abstract:A facile and general method was described to coat six types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, functionalized by either noncovalent or covalent way, with smooth silica shells. 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) and pH value play important roles in the coating process and the thickness of silica shell could be controlled by the added amount of silicon alkoxides. After the removal of multi-walled carbon nanotubes by calcination, the silica nanotubes were successfully prepared.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) encapsulated with Co/Pd magnetic and nonmagnetic multi-metal nanowires using Co and Pd thin-layers deposited on Si substrate by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using a bias-enhanced growth method. Detailed structural and compositional investigations of these metal nanowires inside MWCNTs were carried out by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to elucidate the growth mechanisms. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that MWCNTs were encapsulated with Co and Pd nanowires, separately, at the tube top and the bottom of Co nanowire, respectively. The face-centered-cubic (fcc) structure of Co nanowires was confirmed by a selected area diffraction pattern. We proposed a fruitful description for the encapsulating mechanisms of both Co and Pd multi-metal nanowires. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Single and double layered MoS2-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNs) were successfully prepared by pyrolyzing (NH4)(2)MoS4-Coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes in an H-2 atmosphere at 900degreesC. Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) coated with a smooth and uniform tin oxide (SnO2) layers of different thickness were prepared by a novel thioglycolic acid assisted one-step wet chemical method. The coatings were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thickness of the SnO2 coatings can be easily controlled by changing the synthesis conditions, such as pH value of the solution and hydrolysis time. The electrochemical properties of the SnO2/MWCNTs composites as anode materials for lithium batteries were studied by galvanostatic method. The composites showed high charge capacities and good durability against decay. This could be ascribed to the good dispersion, thin layer and small particle size of SnO2 on MWCNTs.

Abstract:Close-packed bundles of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized in two-stage horizontal floating catalyst system. The MWNTs were assembled into bundles by controlling appropriate parameters in floating catalyst system. Common amorphous carbon layers, which resulted from the pyro-carbon deposition on small diameter carbon nanotubes, were found to be the key reason for the formation of close-packed MWNT bundles after small-diameter MWNTs were attracted together by weak van der Waals attraction.

Abstract:The covalent functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by layer-by-layer (LbL) click chemistry is reported. The clickable polymers of poly(2-azidoethyl methacrylate) and poly(propargyl methacrylate) were synthesized at first by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-azidoethyl methacrylate and reverse addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of propargyl methacrylate, respectively. The two polymers were then alternately coated on alkyne-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes using Cu(I)-catalyzed click reaction of Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between azides and alkynes. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements confirm that the quantity and thickness of the clicked polymer shell on MWNTs can be well controlled by adjusting the cycles or numbers of click reaction and the polymer shell is uniform and even. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier tranform infrared (FTIR) measurements showed that there were still a great amount of residual azido groups on the surfaces of the functionalized MWNTs after clicking three layers of polymers. Furthermore, alkyne-modified rhodamine B and monoalkyne-terminated polystyrene were subsequently used to functionalize the clickable polymer grafted MWNTs, giving rise to fluorescent carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and CNT-based polystyrene brushes, respectively. It demonstrates that the residual azido groups on the surfaces of MWNTs are available for further click reaction with various functional molecules.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated with MoS2 were produced by hydrothermal reaction using Na2MoO4 as the Mo source and CS(NH2)2 as the reducing agent and S source, with CNTs present. The product was characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, Raman and x-ray diffraction methods. The effects of CNTs on the formation of the tubular MoS2 layers were discussed. It was found that CNTs provide a topological and structural template favouring nucleation and growth of tubular MoS2 layers on the surface of CNTs. The tubular MoS2 layers had a high crystallinity. Heteronanostructural MoS2/CNTs composite nanotubes could be obtained in this facile way.
