Analysis on the Involvement of Protestantism in Politics of South Korea and Its Characteristics

Abstract:Religons play an important role in South Korean politics.Since independence,Protestantism has taken an advantageous political position,being relatively intact politically and structurally.The anti-communism and special support by the U.S.and South Korean authoriteis blured the division between religion and politics.Since the 1960s,religions began to distance itself from politics and there were contradictions and competitions within religions.The political involvement of religions was shown in different forms.In the era of democratization,the most prominent characteristic of the political involvement of religions was the counter-attack by the conservative forces.In other words,conservatization was the trend in religious circles.Another direction of this conservatization was the politicalization of religions.Political organizations or political parties were formed among various branches of religions,so as to gather maximum political forces.
