Abstract:A newly developed route for the synthesis of hollow carbon nanospheres without introducing template under hydrothermal conditions was reported. Hollow carbon nanospheres with the diameter of about 100 nm were synthesized using alginate as reagent only. Many instruments were applied to characterize the morphologies and structures of carbon hollow nanospheres, such as XRD, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The possible formation and growth mechanism of carbon hollow spheres were discussed on the basis of the investigation of reaction influence factors, such as temperature, time, and content. The findings would be useful for the synthesis of more materials with hollow structure and for the potential use in many aspects. The loading of SnO2on the surface of carbon hollow spheres was processed, and its PL property was also characterized.

Abstract:A simple reduction/oxidation chemical solution approach at room temperature has been developed to synthesize ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals, in which NaBH4 is used as a reducing agent instead of mineralizers such as sodium hydroxide, ammonia, and alcohol. The morphology, structure, and optical property of the ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals have been characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis (DSC-TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It is indicated that the uniform tetragonal ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals with the size below 2 nm have been fabricated at room temperature. The band gap of the ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals is about 4.1 eV, exhibiting 0.5 eV blue shift from that of the bulk SnO2 (3.6 eV). Furthermore, the mechanism for the reduction/oxidation chemical reaction synthesis of the ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals has been preliminary presented. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A facile solution-phase method has been developed to synthesize specially hollow and solid ZnS nanospheres. High-resolution TEM images on the nanospheres suggest their formation via the oriented aggregation of the primary ZnS nanocrystals. The morphology and size of the ZnS nanospheres can also be tuned easily by controlling the experimental conditions. These special spherical structures are very easily encapsulated within a uniform silica layer without any surface modification, suggesting potential applications in biochemistry and biodiagnostics.

Abstract:Hollow ZnO microspheres with nanowires grown on the inner and outer surfaces (HZMSnws) have been successfully synthesized by a simple two-step thermal process approach, where pre-deposited Zn powder particles on Si substrates act as temporary templates to form hollow ZnO sphere shells, while additional Zn powder acts as a Zn source to grow single crystal nanowires on the surfaces of spherical shells. SEM, XRD, TEM and HRTEM were used to characterize the morphology and crystalline structure of the samples. Photoluminescence (PL) measurement shows strong UV emission (380 nm) of HZMSnws samples. Lacking the need for the additional template removal is an important advantage of this approach over others and it therefore can be used to prepare hollow ZnO nano/microsphere shells (HZMSs) and HZMSnws at low cost and at large scale. These kinds of special high surface area hollow spherical structures may find potential applications in photocatalysis, light-weight composite fillers, acoustic insulation, UV nano/micro-optoemission devices and photoanodes of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:We report an interesting approach for efficient synthesis of SnO2 hollow spheres inside mesoporous silica "nanoreactors". The as-prepared products are shown to have a uniform size distribution and good structural stability. When evaluated for their lithium storage properties, these SnO2 hollow spheres manifest improved capacity retention.

Abstract:Hollow cadmium molybdate microspheres have been successfully prepared via a template-free aqueous solution method with the assistance of NaCl at room temperature. The structure and morphology of the CdMoO(4) hollow microspheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The microspheres have diameters of 3-6 microm and hollow interiors of 2-3 microm. The shell is composed of numerous single-crystalline nanorods with diameters of 30-120 nm and lengths of 1-2 microm which are radially oriented to the center. A certain concentration of NaCl plays a key important role in the formation process of hollow microspheres, which might provide a suitable chemical environment to favor the formation of hollow CdMoO(4) microspheres. A possible NaCl-induced Ostwald ripening process is proposed for the formation of hollow CdMoO(4) microspheres on the basis of scanning electron microscopy observation of intermediate products at different precipitation stages.

Abstract:This paper reviews the solution-phase synthesis of nanoparticles via some routes at low temperatures, such as room temperature route, wave-assisted synthesis (γ-irradiation route and sonochemical route), directly heating at low temperatures, and hydrothermal/solvothermal methods. A number of strategies were developed to control the shape, the size, as well as the dispersion of nanostructures. Using diethylamine or n-butylamine as solvent, semiconductor nanorods were yielded. By the hydrothermal treatment of amorphous colloids, Bi2S3 nanorods and Se nanowires were obtained. CdS nanowires were prepared in the presence of polyacrylamide. ZnS nanowires were obtained using liquid crystal. The polymer poly (vinyl acetate) tubule acted as both nanoreactor and template for the CdSe nanowire growth. Assisted by the surfactant of sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS), nickel nanobelts were synthesized. In addition, Ag nanowires, Te nanotubes and ZnO nanorod arrays could be prepared without adding any additives or templates.

Abstract:Monodispersed semiconducting SnTe nanocrystallites was successfully prepared via a solution synthesis route at room temperature. It was found that solvent (ethylenediamine), reductant (KBH4), and tin source (liquid SnCl4) were crucial factors in the preparation of the titled nanocrystals. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the product. Raman spectrum of the as-prepared sample had a red shift by five or six wavenumbers in comparison with that of the SnTe single crystals.

Abstract:In this letter, the formation of the hierarchical SnO2 hollow octahedra was achieved by thermal treatment of ZnSn(OH)6 precursors in ammonia solution. The synthesized SnO2 was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The XRD pattern indicated the formation of well crystallized SnO2. The FE-SEM and HR-TEM images showed that the hollow octahedra were built by SnO2 nanorod arrays. A possible formation mechanism for this kind of hollow octahedron structure was proposed. Room temperature photoluminescence shows that hierarchical SnO2 hollow octahedra have two prominent emission bands at 575 and 625nm.

Abstract:Monodispersed SnO2 microspheres with diameter about 1μm were successfully synthesized by solvothermal method at 180 OC for 12h, using PEG as template, SnCl4•5H2O and urea as raw materials. Effects of concentration and molecular weight of PEG, hydrothermal temperature on the morphology of SnO2 microspheres were studied. The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD and SEM and the formation mechanism of microspheres was discussed. Furthermore, the room temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) was investigated. The results indicate that the SnO2 microspheres are self-assembled by nanocrystals. PEG has a great influence on the morphology and diameter of microspheres while hydrothermal temperature and time influence the dispersity and uniformity. In the PL spectra, a broad band (320-450nm) is exhibited and the stronger peak at about 406nm reveals the existence of defects in the samples.

Abstract:A novel solution-controlled self-assembly process has been developed to fabricate nanorod assembled ZnO hollow spheres without adding any structure-directing agents and templates, and as-prepared hollow samples with size about 5 mu m are constructed by the radially oriented single-crystalline nanorods with length and diameter of about 1.5 mu n and 80 nm, respectively. The investigation on the evolution formation reveals that water was critical to control the assembly of the fresh formed nanocrystallites, and hollowing formation was proved to be the Ostwald ripening process by tracking the structures of the products at different reaction stages. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the structure of synthesized products, and gas-sensing properties investigation shows that the nanorod-assembled hollow spheres exhibit high gas response to formaldehyde at the optimum working temperature of 400 degrees C.

Abstract:Hollow SnO2 microspheres were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. C/SnO2 composite microspheres were hydrothermally prepared using the glucose as a carbon source, and citric acid was employed as the chelating agent in order to stabilize Sn2+ ions in aqueous solution. Then the C/SnO2 composite microspheres were annealed at 550°C in static air to obtain hollow SnO2 microspheres with diameters of 1–2μm. Such novel hollow SnO2 microstructures possess high surface area (95m2/g), thus enhancing their photocatalytic property. The RhB solution degrades 80% with irradiation of 60min.

Abstract:Hollow zinc oxide microspheres have been synthesized from a micro ZnBr(2)(.)2H(2)O precursor obtained by an autoclave process in bromoform steam at 220 degrees C/2.5 MPa. Field-emission scanning electron microscropy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the products are about 1.0 mu m single crystal spherical particles with hollow interiors, partly open surfaces and walls self-assembled by ZnO nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the as-prepared ZnO hollow spheres are of a hexagonal phase structure. A possible formation mechanism is suggested on the basis of the shape evolution of ZnO nanostructures observed by SEM and TEM. The room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectrum shows UV emission around 386 nm and weak green emission peaks indicating that there are few defects in the single crystal grains of the ZnO microspheres.

Abstract:SnO2 hollow nanospheres were prepared by loading SnCl4 on the surface of carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres used as template. During the loading process, different kinds of solvent (ethonal or dimethylfomamide) were used to disperse the carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres and SnCl4. Carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres were synthesized from glucose solution by hydrothermal method at different temperature (190 or 180 degrees C) for 8 h. Pd-doped SnO2 hollow nanospheres were also prepared by similar method for comparison. The surface morphology of SnO2 hollow nanosphere was characterized by scanning electronic microscopy. The sensing properties of the sensor devices using the as-prepared SnO2 hollow nanospheres to H-2 were investigated at the optimal working temperature. The difference of the sensing properties could be attributed to the difference of the particle size for the synthesized SnO2 hollow spheres. The doping of Pd into the SnO2 hollow spheres could not only lower the working temperature, but also improve the response to the target gas.

Abstract:Hollow ZnO microspheres assembled by nanoparticles have been prepared by a sonochemical synthesis at room temperature using carbon spheres as template. The growth process of the precursor was investigated. The prepared hollow spheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The diameter of the obtained hollow spheres is about 500nm, and the walls are composed of numerous ZnO aggregate nanocrystallines with diameters of 90nm. A possible growth mechanism for the formation of ZnO microspheres has been proposed, in which carbon spheres play a crucial role in the formation of the wurtzite hollow ZnO microspheres. The specific structure of the hollow spheres may find applications in nanoelectronics, nanophotonics and nanomedicine.

Abstract:Heterostructures of SnO2 nanoparticles (NP)/CdS nanowires (NW) were successfully fabricated by a two-step chemical solution method. In the first step, CdS nanowires were synthesized by a simple solvothermal route. In the second step, SnO2 nanoparticles were grown on the surface of the CdS nanowires in a chemical solution of SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O and anhydrous ethanol at 200 degrees C. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were adopted to characterize the as-prepared products. The possible formation mechanism of the SnO2 NP/CdS NW heterostructures has been phenomenologically discussed. The effects of reaction conditions, such as deposition reaction time, reaction temperature, and solvent were also studied.

Abstract:In this work, SnO2 hierarchical nanostructures were successfully prepared via a simple and surfactant-free hydrothermal process starting from stannous sulfate (SnSO4) and trisodium citrate dihydrate (Na3C6H5O7·2H2O) in a suitable ethanol–water system. TEM and HRTEM images showed that the obtained SnO2 products are uniform, well-dispersed, and have spherical architectures, composed of tiny primary nanocrystals, and the diameters are about 50 nm. It was found that the amount of Na3C6H5O7·2H2O and the volume ratio of ethanol and water played important roles in determining the final morphologies of the products. The gas sensing results indicated that the sensor made from porous SnO2 nanostructures calcined at 400 °C exhibited excellent gas sensing performance to butanol at the low temperature compared with those under higher calcination temperature and commercial SnO2. The SnO2 hierarchical nanostructures possess uniform size and large surface areas, making them ideal candidates for more potential applications such as battery electrodes and as opto-electronic devices.
