Abstract:A simple reduction/oxidation chemical solution approach at room temperature has been developed to synthesize ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals, in which NaBH4 is used as a reducing agent instead of mineralizers such as sodium hydroxide, ammonia, and alcohol. The morphology, structure, and optical property of the ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals have been characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis (DSC-TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It is indicated that the uniform tetragonal ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals with the size below 2 nm have been fabricated at room temperature. The band gap of the ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals is about 4.1 eV, exhibiting 0.5 eV blue shift from that of the bulk SnO2 (3.6 eV). Furthermore, the mechanism for the reduction/oxidation chemical reaction synthesis of the ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals has been preliminary presented. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In the present study the intestine-like binary SnO2/TiO2 hollow nanostructures are one-pot synthesized in aqueous phase at room temperature via a colloid seeded deposition process in which the intestine-like hollow SnO2 spheres and Ti(SO4)2 are used as colloid seeds and Ti-source, respectively. The novel core (SnO2 hollow sphere)-shell (TiO2) nanostructures possess a large surface area of 122m2/g (calcined at 350°C) and a high exposure of TiO2 surface. The structural change of TiO2 shell at different temperatures was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. It was observed that the rutile TiO2 could form even at room temperature due to the presence of SnO2 core and the unique core-shell interaction.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) nanowires have been synthesized in bulk quantities at lower temperature (680 °C) by thermal evaporation of SnO powder. These as-synthesized SnO2 nanowires are single crystals with [301] growth axis, with diameters ranging from 10 to 190 nm and lengths extending to tens of micrometers. The growth of SnO2 nanowires synthesized by lower-temperature evaporation is dominated by a self-catalytic vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism. The self-catalytic effect in VLS process has been described.

Abstract:In this work, a facile, solution phase route using Co(OH)(x)(CO3)(y) nanowires as precursors was developed to fabricate SnO2/Co(OH)(x+2 epsilon)(CO3)(y-epsilon), and then they were transformed into SnO2/Co3O4 composite nanotubes by a simple thermal treatment process, which had great advantages in controlling their elemental ratios and the size of inner diameters. The mechanism is systematically discussed, which offers a clue that "diffusion" could be used as a driving force for the formation of nanotubes with different components, and single-component nanowires with replaceable negative ions may serve as good building blocks. TiO2/Co3O4 nanotubes were also successfully achieved to demonstrate the generality of the methodology, which is helpful for scientists to exploit novel functional materials with new properties and applications.

Abstract:The facile synthesis of one-dimensional II–VI semiconductor hollow nanostructures with sharp tips is of particular interest for their applications in novel nanodevices. In this study, by employing ZnO nanoneedles with lower symmetry structures as self-sacrificed templates, ZnS hollow nanoneedles with homogeneous thickness have been synthesized by a low temperature hydrothermal route through in situ chemical conversion manner and the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. The hollow needlelike structures obtained in the present study can be used as starting materials to create fantastic nanoarchitectures and may have important applications in optoelectronic nanodevices.

Abstract:A new method has been successfully developed to synthesize SnO2 nanoribbons in a large scale by direct oxidation of tin powders. The lengths of the nanoribbons were up to several hundreds of micrometers, and the width and thickness were in the range of 20-150nm and 10-50nm. respectively. The assynthesized SnO2 nanoribbons had preferred [001] growth direction.

Abstract:A new simple low-temperature hydrothermal process without addition of any surfactant or complexing agent was put forward to synthesize uniform ZnO nanorods, in which hydrazine hydrate instead of NaOH was used as mineralizer. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy were used to characterize the product, the results of which reveal that uniform ZnO nanorods approximately 70 nm in width and 2 μm in length were formed at 150°C within 8 h. Prior to the hydrothermal process hydrazine hydrate reacted with ZnCl2 solution to form a complex, and the complex slowly decomposed in the hydrothermal process. All these characteristics were favorable to this additive-free hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanorods.

Abstract:Herein, we report the synthesis of novel worm like structured SnO2 nanoparticles photocatalysts by chemical precipitation route from sodium stannate in the absence of a precipitating agent. The physico-chemical characteristics of the synthesized SnO2 were studied using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS), Photoluminescence (PL), and High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) studies. PXRD and HRTEM analysis reveals the formation of amorphous SnO2 in the tetragonal crystal structure. XPS and PL characterization affirmed the presence of oxygen defects in SnO2, which could be due to Sn2+ present in the lattices. The optical band gap calculated using Kubelka-Munk method to be 3.8 eV. Photocatalytic studies of the prepared SnO2 catalyst showed 92% of Rhodamine-B (RhB) degradation in 120 min under UV irradiation. The enhanced dye degradation activity is attributed to oxygen defects in the SnO2 catalyst, which are responsible for the enhanced charge separation and inhibition of electron-hole pair recombination by trapping photogenerated electrons.

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO2) nanobelts have been successfully synthesized in bulk quantity by a simple and low-cost process based on the thermal evaporation of tin powders at 800 °C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations reveal that the nanobelts are uniform, with lengths from several-hundred micrometers to a few millimeters, widths of 60 to 250 nm and thicknesses of 10 to 30 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and selected-area electron diffraction analysis (SAED) indicate that the nanobelts are tetragonal rutile structure of SnO2. The SnO2 nanobelts grow via a vapor–solid (VS) process.

Abstract:A new one-step solid-state reaction synthesis of tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles has been developed. The process is a convenient, inexpensive and efficient preparation for SnO2 nanomaterial with adjustable grain sizes in the range of 3–15nm in high yield. They can be dispersed into EtOH or distilled water. The prepared SnO2 nanoparticles have high sensitivities towards reducing gases.

Abstract:One-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures have demonstrated significant advantages for electrochemical electrode due to their remarkable size-dependent and structure-related properties. In this work, large-scale single-crystalline SnO2 nanowires have been successfully synthesized by thermal evaporation of a SnO2 and C powder under atmospheric conditions without any carrier gas or noble metal catalysts-coated substrate. The as-prepared samples exhibit uniform morphology with a thin diameter of 100-200 nm and length up to several tens of micrometers. The SnO2 nanowires directly grown on the initially deposition layer are found to grow along [301] direction, which is possibly dominated by a vapor solid (VS) mechanism. The SnO2 nanowires synthesized by this simple and cheap method deliver a very high lithium storage capacity with good cycle stability and high rate capability, allowing for the achievement of high energy density and long cycle life for the next-generation energy conversion and storage devices. Abstract:Uniform SnO2 nanorods with diameters of similar to 8-15 nm and lengths of similar to 150-200 nm have been successfully fabricated by a one-step reverse micro-mediated hydrothermal process. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that the as-prepared SnO2 nanorods are of high crystallinity. The Figure shows a TEM image of SnO2 nanorods synthesized at 200 degreesC for 18 h.

Abstract:SnO2 nanorods with rutile crystal structure are synthesized by the reaction of SnO vapor with oxygen. The crystallinity and structure features of the nanorods were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and Raman spectrum. The results verify that the formation and growth processes of SnO2 nanorods are mainly determined by vapor–solid (VS) mechanism in low saturation situation.

Abstract:V-type SnO2 nanowires in large amount have been prepared by the thermal decomposition of SnO and vapor transport method at 1223K. The arms of V- , W- or Z-type nanowires pose the same angle of 68° and are monolithically single crystalline SnO2 with the growth facet indexed to be {101}, characterized by SEM, TEM, HRTEM and EDS. The formation of these zigzag SnO2 nanowires is attributed to the growth-facet change between (101) and (1¯01) in an energy-equally way, following the gas–solid growth mode. The formation of these structures is significantly enhanced by the turbulent gas flow, in the presence of a ceramic column in the reactor.

Abstract:SnO2 nanowires have been prepared using the active carbon reaction with the fine SnO2 powder at low temperature (700 °C). These nanowires show rectangular cross-section, with their widths ranging from 10 to 50 nm. Branched nanowires with definite included angle are also observed in these products. The morphology and microstructure of the single crystalline SnO2 nanowires and the branched nanowires are characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selective area electron diffraction (SAED) and Raman spectrum. Abstract:Despite significant advances in the synthesis of nanostructures, our understanding of the growth mechanisms of nanowires and nanotubes grown from catalyst particles remains limited. In this study we demonstrate a straightforward route to grow coaxial amorphous B/BOx nanowires and BOx nanotubes using gold catalyst particles inside a transmission electron microscope at room temperature without the need of any specialized or expensive accessories. Exceedingly high growth rates (over 7 μm/min) are found for the coaxial nanowires, and this is attributed to the highly efficient diffusion of B species along the surface of a nanowire by electrostatic repulsion. On the other hand the O species are shown to be relevant to activate the gold catalysts, and this can occur through volatile O species. The technique could be further developed to study the growth of other nanostructures and holds promise for the room temperature growth of nanostructures as a whole.

Abstract:Using Sn powders as source material, different SnO2 nanostructures, such as nanowires and nanorods, nanoflowers were synthesized successfully by simple chemical vapor deposition in a low temperature. SnO2 submicron rings were obtained by reducing the oxygen gas concentration in carrier gas and the effect of oxygen gas on controlling the morphology of products was demonstrated by adjusting the quantity of Sn powders and the rate of heating. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The growth mechanism of the products was further discussed.

Abstract:In this communication, we successfully synthesized a new SnO(2) nanoarchitecture: extremely thin sheets, with minimum thicknesses of 1.5-3.0 nm. The products were prepared through a facile hydrothermal treatment using tin dichloride as the precursor. Planar or scrolled SnO(2) sheets were carefully examined by transmission electron microscopy. The assemblies of these sheets have a high BET surface area of 180.3 m(2)/g and extraordinarily large pore volume of 1.028 cm(3)/g. They also exhibit a high lithium storage capacity and excellent cyclability due to its nanometer-sized frame and breathable characteristic.
