Abstract:We propose an opto-electronic THz vector imaging system based on a self-mixing detection receiver, which can be used to measure thickness of samples. In the proposed system architecture, a THz signal is generated by microwave photonics technology and received by a Schottky barrier diode detector. In the THz free space transmission link, four parabolic mirrors are used to collimate the THz signals, and the sample under test is placed at the focal point of a parabolic mirror. At the receiver side, the transmission signal is down-converted by Schottky barrier diode detector, and the phase information is acquired by a lock-in amplifier, which is used for sample imaging and thickness detection. In the experiment demonstration, a Mach-Zehnder modulator with carrier-suppression is used to generate a two-tone optical signal, and coupled with an external cavity laser for photomixing generation of a two-tone THz signal in the 300GHz frequency band at an uni-traveling carrier photodiode. Several samples with different thicknesses are imaged and compared in the experiment, and the measured thickness error is estimated to be about 3.84%.

Abstract:Over the past few years, numerous photonic-wireless transmission demonstrations with high data rates in the terahertz (THz) band have been reported, aiming to supporting the explosive growth of data traffic in next-generation communication networks. Usually, real-time analysis of THz signals is implemented in the intermediate frequency domain by using electronic down-converters with limited bandwidth, which brings inconvenience to the monitoring of very large THz bandwidth. In this work, an equivalent-time sampling (ETS) system based on a conventional photoconductive antenna (PCA) for capturing and monitoring high-speed THz signals is proposed, theoretically analyzed, and experimentally demonstrated. The PCA, excited by optical pulses from a mode-locked laser (similar to 100 MHz) and biased by the THz fields, enables the equivalent optical sampling of THz signals into low-frequency regions. In our proof-of-concept experiment, a single-frequency signal at 125 GHz and 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals at a baud rate of 15 Gbaud at 125 GHz are successfully sampled, monitored, and evaluated with a similar to 100 MHz sampling rate. In this way, the high-speed THz signals can be easily accessible with no need of additional high-frequency components. The waveform distortion values for single-frequency and high-speed communication signal are 0.11%, 2.96% (in-phase) and 2.56% (quadrature). Our proposed ETS system is expected to provide a simple, convenient, and straightforward approach to capture and monitor broadband THz signals.

Abstract:A novel CCD high speed videography system with brand-new concepts and techniques is developed by Zhejiang University recently. The system can send a series of short flash pulses to the moving object. All of the parameters, such as flash numbers, flash durations, flash intervals, flash intensities and flash colors, can be controlled according to needs by the computer. A series of moving object images frozen by flash pulses, carried information of moving object, are recorded by a CCD video camera, and result images are sent to a computer to be frozen, recognized and processed with special hardwares and softwares. Obtained parameters can be displayed, output as remote controlling signals or written into CD. The highest videography frequency is 30,000 images per second. The shortest image freezing time is several microseconds.The system has been applied to wide fields of energy,chemistry,medicine, biological engineering, aero-dynamics, explosion, multi-phase flow, mechanics,vibration,athletic training,weapon development and national defence engineering. It can also be used in production streamline to carry out the online, real-time monitoring and controlling.

Abstract:In recent years, remarkable achievements have been witnessed in developing terahertz (THz) communication systems with high data rates. However, the analyzers/receivers of most THz communication systems still heavily rely on electronic circuits with limited bandwidth, obstructing the further exploration of THz resource. In this work, an equivalent-time sampling (ETS) system based on a conventional photoconductive antenna (PCA) is proposed for capturing high-speed THz signals. The PCA is excited by ultrashort optical pulses from a low repetition-rate mode-locked laser (MLL) and hence alternates the sampling of high-speed THz signals into low-frequency domain. The proposed ETS system for THz signals is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proof-of-concept experiment, an on-off keying (OOK) signal with a baud rate of 15 Gbaud are successfully sampled and evaluated. The proposed THz ETS system can be easily accessible by low-speed electronics, which is expected to bring new opportunities for high-speed THz time-domain analyzer.

Abstract:Terahertz wave can penetrate many materials and has a very strong complementary characteristic compared with visible light and X-ray,whose photon has very low energy,and does not have ionization characteristic of X-ray,so Terahertz imaging technology has a broad application prospect.The system referred in the paper consists of Terahertz radiation source FIRL100 laser,Terahertz detecting instrument golay cell detector,stepper motor controller and translation stage,lock-in amplifier SR830 and chopper and so on.In Terahertz imaging system,it plays a crucial role for the imaging results which we properly choose the parameters of system and appropriately control the software.Inappropriate handling,such as improperly choosing the parameters of chopper and lock-in amplifier,will lead to dislocation between two rows and get low signal-to-noise,so that the images produce distortion,even can not be recognized.In this paper,the reasons for dislocation phenomenon occurring is analyzed,then the control,compensation and elimination of systematic deviation which led to the phenomenon appear are performed.The results of scanning and imaging show that the system has good imaging results by experiment and test,after having set up a stable and proper optical path,the appropriate instrument parameters are selected and the deviation by software is controlled.

The system can switch between large beam THz imaging and tight-focusing THz imaging, which provides a method for implementing the integrated application of the system. Since the imaging is based on the traditional THz time-domain spectroscopy method, the spectral amplitude and phase information of the sample can be obtained simultaneously. The spectral resolution is about 15 GHz. A series of micromachining samples is measured and studied by using the system, and the performance of the imaging system is analyzed by using the micron structure. The results show the superiority of the real-time high-resolution terahertz spectral imaging system in terms of spatial resolution and imaging speed. The real-time imaging frame rate is up to 20 f/s (1200 frames/min) at 1024 pixel × 512 pixel. In the large-field THz imaging, the optimal spatial resolution reaches

Abstract:There are numerous applications of terahertz (THz) imaging in many fields. However, current THz imaging is generally based on scanning technique due to the limited intensity of the THz sources. Thus, it takes a long time to obtain a frame image of the target and cannot meet the requirement of fast THz imaging. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot direct THz imaging strategy based on a broadband intense THz source with a frequency range of 0.1~23 THz and a THz camera with a frequency response range of 1~7 THz. This THz source was generated from the laser‒plasma interaction, with its central frequency at ~12 THz. The frame rate of this imaging system was 8.5 frames per second. The imaging resolution reached 146.2 μm. With this imaging system, a single-shot THz image for a target object with a size of more than 7 cm was routinely obtained, showing a potential application for fast THz imaging. Furthermore, we proposed and tested an image enhancement algorithm based on an improved dark channel prior (DCP) theory and multi-scale retinex (MSR) theory to optimize the image brightness, contrast, entropy and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

Abstract:Due to the presence of solar radiation, each object emits electromagnetic waves at different temperatures. Thermal infrared imaging is to image an object through a thermal infrared CCD, which can reflect the temperature field of the object. The image information is obtained by infrared radiation intensity distribution, and the infrared light invisible to the human eye is converted into a visible image. Thermal infrared has a wide range of applications in military, industrial, automotive, medical, and other fields. This technology is still a research hotspot at present, and it has high research value for any region. This paper designs a communication device architecture for an infrared thermal imaging target recognition and tracking system and optimizes and compares different target recognition and tracking algorithms. The test results show that the device system can reduce the system software frame processing time from 120 ms to an average of 28 ms, and the processing speed is increased by about 4.3 times.

Abstract:The reflection‐mode terahertz active imaging system with a Cassegrain reflector has been constructed .A commercial Schottky diode is utilized in the system to detect the reflected terahertz signal and realize rapid imaging at room temperature .The system adopts 2‐D rotating scanning .Compared with the raster scanning ,the scheme can substantially increase the scanning speed of the system .It is found from the experiment that the system can get clear images only when the objects are copper sticks .However ,for the other objects ,the system is not effective enough so that sometimes the clear images cannot be obtained .In this paper ,the possible reasons for its poor image quality is analyzed .Firstly ,the method of the mathematical modeling on the basis of the theory of optical reflection is employed to reconstruct a scanning trajectory .The method can solve the deformation of the terahertz images ,because the calculated trajectory is much more consistent with the actual one compared with reported method .Secondly ,in order to optimize the quality of the images without the sacrifice of scanning time ,the Delaunay triangle algorithm is proposed to demodulate data and thus improve image quality .Our experiments show that a higher image quality can be achieved from the improved imaging system .Specifically ,the terahertz images have little deformation for the copper sticks .Even for the objects with complex structures ,acceptable image quality can be obtained .Moreover ,it is meaningful to apply the improved terahertz active imaging system to practical fields ,including the security checking , nondestructive evaluation ,etc .

Abstract:Abstract Many exciting terahertz imaging applications, such as non-destructive evaluation, biomedical diagnosis, and security screening, have been historically limited in practical usage due to the raster-scanning requirement of imaging systems, which impose very low imaging speeds. However, recent advancements in terahertz imaging systems have greatly increased the imaging throughput and brought the promising potential of terahertz radiation from research laboratories closer to real-world applications. Here, we review the development of terahertz imaging technologies from both hardware and computational imaging perspectives. We introduce and compare different types of hardware enabling frequency-domain and time-domain imaging using various thermal, photon, and field image sensor arrays. We discuss how different imaging hardware and computational imaging algorithms provide opportunities for capturing time-of-flight, spectroscopic, phase, and intensity image data at high throughputs. Furthermore, the new prospects and challenges for the development of future high-throughput terahertz imaging systems are briefly introduced.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a continuous-wave (CW) terahertz (THz) imaging system based on microwave photonic signal generation scheme. Compared to the traditional opto-electronic THz imaging by using unmodulated lasers, our proposed system obtains the amplitude information by using microwave photonic optical double sideband modulation (DSB). As a result, the phase noise and frequency drift of the free-running laser sources are negligible. We experimentally demonstrate a THz imaging system for measuring various 3D-printed samples by using a 300 GHz DSB signal. In the experiment, the optical DSB modulation is realized with an in-phase and quadrature Mach-Zehnder modulator, and THz signals are generated by photo-mixing at a uni-traveling-carrier photodiode. The THz signals passing through the sample is received by a self-mixing-based Schottky barrier diode. The experimental results show signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) a similar to 25 dB . In addition, we verify that the optical DSB system operating in the linear regime is superior to the carrier-suppressed scheme, which is attributed to higher THz power and higher SNR. Therefore, the proposed scheme based on microwave photonic double sideband modulation is potentially promising in high-resolution object recognition.
A Passive Video-Rate Terahertz Human Body Imager with Real-Time Calibration for Security Applications

Abstract:Real-time video-rate passive terahertz imaging systems are highly demanded for practical applications, especially in security checking. Here, we demonstrate a passive video-rate terahertz human body imaging system, which was mainly consisted of a scanning module, a quasi-optical lens, a calibration module and a one-dimensional terahertz detector array. The terahertz waves radiated from human bodies in front of the imager can transmit through a terahertz window into the imager, and were reflected by the scanning module, and then focused on the detector array by the quasi-optical lens. A calibration module was also designed to calibrate the terahertz detectors in real-time without disturbing the imaging process. In combination of the scanning module with the detector array, the imager can obtain a full image of a human body standing at a distance of 1.5 m in front of the imager with a resolution of 1.5 cm and a frame rate of 10 fps. The imaging system can discover suspected dangerous items carried on the human body such as metals, ceramics, powders and liquids. Furthermore, an intelligent terahertz imaging algorithm employing convolutional neural network was also successfully realized based on the terahertz images produced by this system to improve the image quality and mark the detected items automatically. We believe our real-time video-rate terahertz imaging techniques and systems not only have great values for further inspiring developing terahertz imaging systems but also can accelerate the terahertz technology towards more practical applications.

Abstract:The application of terahertz wave holographic imaging technique in the study of the disease detection has attracted great interest. In this paper, a high-resolution terahertz coaxial digital holographic imaging transmission system operating at 3THz is presented. This design is used in the THz imaging system for the study of the disease detection. The physical optical propagation analysis method (POP) and an advanced three dimensional numerical calculation software MATLAB are used to analyze the results. The simulation results indicate that the design meet the requirement of the proposed system.

Abstract:Abstract Terahertz (THz) radiation is poised to have an essential role in many imaging applications, from industrial inspections to medical diagnosis. However, commercialization is prevented by impractical and expensive THz instrumentation. Single-pixel cameras have emerged as alternatives to multi-pixel cameras due to reduced costs and superior durability. Here, by optimizing the modulation geometry and post-processing algorithms, we demonstrate the acquisition of a THz-video (32 × 32 pixels at 6 frames-per-second), shown in real-time, using a single-pixel fiber-coupled photoconductive THz detector. A laser diode with a digital micromirror device shining visible light onto silicon acts as the spatial THz modulator. We mathematically account for the temporal response of the system, reduce noise with a lock-in free carrier-wave modulation and realize quick, noise-robust image undersampling. Since our modifications do not impose intricate manufacturing, require long post-processing, nor sacrifice the time-resolving capabilities of THz-spectrometers, their greatest asset, this work has the potential to serve as a foundation for all future single-pixel THz imaging systems.
