Abstract:The dilemma of contemporary historical writing by a contemporary is mainly represented in the paradox between the universal wholeness and our limited experience,the past reality and present context, interpreting history and predicting future.Due to the temporal limitations,even for the specific fact which he has experienced in person,the historian has to immerse it in the long river of history for examination, which is represented in the process of historical accumulation and reflection.The contemporary history studies the events that we experienced not long ago,and records the experiences that happened in the near past.Even though Hobsbawra lived in the 20th century.As a historian of profound practical concern and strong social obligations,Hobsbawm integrated role of historical participant,an individual and a scholarly individual.He represented his particular understanding of the 20th century just elapsing from the perspec- tive and standing of a witness and a contemporary.For him,the dilemma remains the relationship between individual experiences and collective experiences.Yet another dilemma for contemporary historical writing is for the historian to integrate history and reality in the historical studies from the historical standpoint of view.There has been a gap between the understanding of reality and the predicting of future in the rela- tionship between the contemporary historical research and the historical significance,and how to bridge the gap becomes once more the dilemma for contemporary historical studies.It exemplifies the mandatory rep- etition of the past for the historians to predict the future trends with regard to older situation.
