Abstract:In order to develop an efficient plasma drill, we experimentally researched rock breakdown under short high-voltage pulses in deionized water. Rocks were placed between a needle high-voltage electrode and a plate grounded electrode. The relationship .between breakdown probability and electrical strength was evaluated by applying various voltage levels to the rocks. The results show that the electrical breakdown strength of yellow sandstone with 7% porosity is 70 kV/cm, and for white marble with 0.8~ porosity it is 160 kV/cm. The porosity has a great influence on the breakdown strength. Moreover, experimental results show that the breakdown strength drops with increasing thickness of the rock.

Abstract:It is of great significance to study the direct current (DC) breakdown characteristics of the alternating current (AC) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) for converting AC XLPE cables into DC operation. The AC and DC breakdown experiments were carried out on 10 kV AC XLPE samples under three different dwell times (1 min, 5 min and 15 min). The characteristics between the breakdown electric field and the breakdown time under AC and DC voltage was obtained according to the date of breakdown experiments. The results show that the 1 h AC and DC breakdown electric field is 69.80 MV/m and 170.96 MV/m respectively, and the DC breakdown electric field is always higher than the AC breakdown electric field in the range of 1 h to 40 a.

Abstract:Concrete is here regarded as a kind of mesoscopic composite material composed by aggregates,cement mortar and interfacial transition zones(ITZ).A finite-element model involving zero-thickness cohesive elements is then established.The cohesive elements are embedded in the ITZ and the boundaries of cement mortar elements,along which the potential path of cracking evolution is formed.Using the proposed model,a uniaxial compressive numerical test is carried out to the generated two-dimensional numerical specimen.The stress-strain curve and the cracking patterns of the specimen at different stages from cracking generation and evolution to the final crushing are all presented.The obtained mechanical responses and cracking patterns are much realistic and match the corresponding physical test closely.
Breakdown Characteristics of Rod-Plate Electrode under Composite AC and DC Voltage

Abstract:With enhancement of voltage level, the parts such as fittings, shields and insulator of converter valve which is an important equipment in the high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems suffer from greater volume of composite AC and DC voltage and harmonic voltage. At present, the breakdown characteristics of air gap under composite voltage have been short of research. In this paper, based on the test platform with parallel circuit which means that AC and DC high voltage are applied to one electrode at the same time and the other electrode is grounded, the breakdown characteristics of the rod-plate electrode under the composite voltage are studied. The effects of different electrode distances and different DC components on breakdown voltage are compared and the following conclusions are obtained: when the electrode distance is 0.5 cm or 3 cm, the breakdown voltage basically has no change with DC component; when the electrode distance is from 1 cm to 2.5 cm, with the increase of DC component, the breakdown voltage is first maintained at the value of the AC breakdown voltage, then increases quickly to the DC breakdown voltage and finally basically stay at this value. By analyzing the voltage and current waveforms during breakdown, it can be concluded that the positive corona discharge pulses before breakdown is the key factor affecting the breakdown voltage. The research results of this paper can lay the foundation for the subsequent research on the breakdown mechanism under composite voltage and the prediction of composite breakdown voltage.
Breakdown voltage characteristics of combined air gaps under negative lightning impulse

Abstract:Long air gaps are the main external insulation medium of overhead transmission lines. When there are floating conductors in the air gap, the gap’s configuration changes, and the combined air gaps is formed. We built an experimental platform to obtain the breakdown characteristics of a 2 m rod–plane air gap with a rod floating conductor in different positions under negative lightning impulse. The results show that as the distance between the floating conductor and the high voltage conductor changes, the breakdown voltage (BV) and timing change. Moreover, the breakdown voltage increases with the length of sub-gap 1, showing a trend of first increasing, then decreasing, and then increasing, which is different from the trend under positive lightning impulse. The reason for this phenomenon is inferred from the analysis to be related to the polarity effect.

Abstract:High pulse discharge breakage has a vast prospect as a fresh crushing mechanism for it has the capability to enhance the comminuting effect, however, the breaking mechanism is not yet well studied. In this orthogonal designed research, 27 indoor tests of high voltage pulse discharge (HVPD) for breaking concrete together with the determination of dynamic elastic modulus of concrete based on three variables, i.e. applied voltage, pulse number, and discharge electrode gap, were carried out at three levels. The effects of these factors were studied by using significance and range analysis. The results showed that among these factors, the pulse number has the greatest impact on the dynamic elastic modulus loss (DEML) of concrete, while the applied voltage has the least influence. By changing the value of pulse number and applied voltage, the DEML can be increased to 12.9% and 26.7%, respectively. The impact of the factors' combination was experimentally proven, and the resulting DEML of concrete broken by HVPD was obtained as 219.73 ± 9.58 MPa, which was 25.19% higher than the maximum of the DEML of concrete broken by HVPD in the orthogonal experiment under various individual factors. These findings provide technical references for improving the crushing efficiency of concrete materials and the engineering application of HVPD crushing technology.

Abstract:A point-loading device was used to research the breakage characteristics of single particles and to study their crushing mechanism. A series of point-loading tests were completed on the basis of cement ellipsoid particles modeled in various sizes and strengths with cement pastes. A close-packing method of equal spheres with several close-packed assemblies was generated, and the corresponding numerical models for cement ellipsoid particles were established by the discrete-element method. Experimental and numerical tests show that the high-strength materials are brittle, whereas the low-strength materials are ductile, and vice versa. A comparison of the experimental and numerical results show reasonable, rational results, and indicate that the force-displacement relationship is approximately linear for this type of granular material. A measurement-sphere method was used to trace the energy and stress distribution in the particle samples. The accumulation of dilatant deformation causes the collapse of the local skeleton structures in the cement ellipsoid particles.
Air Breakdown Behavior of Two Series Gaps for Composite Switching Impulse/alternating Voltage

Abstract:More and more high voltage transmission lines make use of rubber housed ZnO arresters in series with another air gap (for example, the insulator gap) as lighting protection elements. Many test results of ZnO arresters protection performance show that this insulation arrangement is suitable for practical lines according to results based on only simple impulse voltage. This paper uses a composite voltage (switching impulse voltage/alternating voltage) to determine the air breakdown behavior of the conductor-rod gap in series with the sphere gap. In the test, the switching impulse voltage is applied to the conductor while the alternating voltage is applied to the rod and one sphere and the other sphere is grounded. The results show that in some cases, the value of the U50% sparkover voltage for the conductor-rod gap with the composite voltage is nearly only half of that for just the simple impulse voltage.

Abstract:Three potential contributing factors to the TSV leakage and breakdown are discussed and analyzed in this study. In addition, an in-line testing methodology is put forward so that leakage and breakdown data could be easily obtained. Finite element method simulation was used to illustrate the testing principle, and experimental test were carried out for validation. It was found that the most contributing factor to the TSV leakage and breakdown is the uniformity of the insulator layer thickness, while via-diameter and pitch between TSVs are factors of failure mechanism of the low-frequency characteristics.

Abstract:Partial discharge of soil occurs when a lightning current enters the ground, and the strength of partial discharge is closely related to the magnitude of its critical breakdown field strength. Therefore, how to accurately obtain the variation law of the typical soil critical breakdown field strength and residual resistivity is the key to realizing the safe operation of the grounding devices and cables in the ground. This paper first selects a variety of typical soils to study the influence of various factors on the morphology of the discharge channel, and then studies the calculation methods of the soil critical breakdown field strength and residual resistivity under the introduction of different discharge channel morphologies and structures, and further discusses the reason why typical soil media factors have a small impact on the critical breakdown field. The experimental results show that under the same conditions, the critical breakdown field strengths of different soils from small to large are sand soil, loam soil and Yellow cinnamon soil. The largest ratio of residual resistivity to initial resistivity of the three soils is sand soil.

Abstract:With the increase of operation voltage to 800 kV-1100 kV, the sphere-plane gaps with radius of 0.5-1 meter are widely used in the converter station of UHVDC power transmission system. In order to ensure the safety of UHVDC system and reduce the investment, it is necessary to investigate the breakdown characteristic of large radius sphere-plane gap. This paper implemented experiments on three different gap configurations: rod-plane, sphere (R= 0.55 m)-plane, and sphere (R= 0.75 m)-plane. The 50% breakdown voltages and the current injected into the high voltage electrode were measured. Besides, the discharge process was observed by a high speed CCD camera. Three types of current waveforms related to different streamer progression characteristics were found. With the increase of sphere radius, it can be found that the streamer gradually becomes dominant in the discharge process, which leads to higher average breakdown field, longer streamer length and much more injected charge of first streamer.

Abstract:As a novel rock-breaking technology, the high-voltage electro pulse rock-breaking boring (EPB) technology has a broad prospect for high efficiency and low energy consumption rock-breaking boring. But the mechanism of rock-breaking under the action of high voltage electro pulse is not clear. In this study, First, red sandstone is selected as the boring sample, the high-voltage electro pulse breaking experiment on red sandstone is carried out with an electrode bit with a diameter of 80 mm and the electrode spacing of 35 mm, the red sandstone is broken down by the shock wave from the electric blasting in plasma channels of the red sandstone, and the complete drilling in the red sandstone is realized. Second, the electric current is collected during the experiment, in addition, the parameter of the shock wave is obtained based on the discharge circuit model and the shock wave model developed in the previous study. The parameters of shock wave and discharge energy are obtained based on the electric discharge circuit model and the shock wave model established in the previous study. Finally, the breakdown process of red sandstone by the shock wave is simulated, and the high-voltage EPB mechanism is analyzed, the simulation result is consistent with the experiment result. Experimental and simulation results indicate that the breakdown process of red sandstone under the action of high-voltage electro pulse includes the electric blasting occurrence stage and the energy dissipating stage, the red sandstone is broken down by the resultant mechanisms of shear failure and tension failure, but the shear failure is dominant.

Abstract:The tensile strength is one of the main parameters in the design of concrete structures and has an important influence on the cracking performance and durability of concrete materials. As the weak region in concrete, the strength of the interface transition zone (ITZ) directly affects the dynamic mechanical response of concrete. Meanwhile, considering that the tensile performance of concrete is far weaker than its compressive performance, the study of the strength of ITZ is of great significance to the dynamic tensile fracture characteristics and mechanical properties of concrete. In this paper, a method combining 3D scanning technology and Clump-Cluster was proposed to generate a real geometry shape model of crushable aggregate. On this basis, the 3D discrete element model (DEM) of high-strength concrete was constructed using the Flat-Joint Model (FJM). The effects of the ITZ strength on the failure mode, number of microcracks, tensile strength and strain rate effect of high-strength concrete under strain rates from 0.01/s to 100/s were studied by splitting tensile test. The simulation results indicate that the number of microcracks generated decreases with the increase of ITZ strength, and the proportion of ITZ cracks decreases obviously. When the ITZ strength exceeds the critical value of 0.8 times that of mortar, the tensile strength is almost not affected by ITZ strength. In addition, based on the numerical simulation results, a modified formula that can reflect the functional relationship between the ITZ strength and the dynamic increasing factor of the concrete tensile strength (TDIF) is proposed, and the rationality of the TDIF modified formula is verified.

The Effect of Frequency on the Breakdown of XLPE Cable Insulation with Artificial Defects

Abstract:It is of great importance to assess the reliability of on-site testing for extruded insulation cables. In the present work, the effect of the applied field frequency on the breakdown performance of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation was investigated. An inserted needle was embedded into a 10 kV commercial XLPE cable along the radial direction to simulate the real defects. The shape of the artificial defects was precisely controlled by a designed mold with a micrometer. Breakdown tests were conducted in transformer oil at room temperature using a frequency-tuned resonant test system and damped AC voltage system in the frequency range from 20 to 300 Hz. After breakdown measurements, specimens were cut into thin layers to investigate microstructure of their breakdown paths by an optical microscope. We found that the breakdown voltage of specimens with inserted needle was sensitive to the applied field frequency and voltage waveforms. The maximum breakdown voltages under variable frequency AC voltage locate at 25Hz and 240 Hz, while that under damped AC voltage locates around 180 Hz. It was found that DC ramp breakdown voltage is higher than impulses breakdown voltage, while ac breakdown voltage is the lowest. It was interesting to note that, different kinds of tree-like sub-paths appear on the flank of the main breakdown path of the specimen with the inserted needle at different frequencies. Frequency dependence of breakdown performance of XLPE cable with inserted needle defect was discussed.
Relationship between the interfacial ramped DC breakdown voltage and the morphology of the XLPE/SiR interface

Abstract:Insulations enhanced with multilayer dielectrics are widely used in many applications. However, the interfaces between the dielectric layers are the weakest regions. Interfacial breakdown occurs frequently at the XLPE/SiR interfaces of DC cable joints or terminations. In this paper, an interface contact model is proposed to analyze the morphology of the XLPE/SiR interface, and the relationship between the interfacial ramped DC breakdown voltage and interface morphology is studied. Based on the interface contact model, the densities of real contact asperities and the percentages of the real contact area of XLPE/SiR interfaces under different levels of roughness and different interface pressures were calculated. Moreover, the interface contact model was verified by the results of an interface contact experiment. Interfacial DC breakdown tests were performed under different levels of roughness and different interface pressures. The interfacial ramped DC breakdown voltage increased from 20.37 to 36.05 kV with the grit number of the sandpaper used to sand the XLPE samples, i.e., 60, 150, 240, and 400. As the interface pressure increased from 0.1 to 0.5 MPa, the interfacial ramped DC breakdown voltage increased from 22.34 to 46.84 kV. The mechanism dictating the relationship between the interfacial ramped DC breakdown voltage and interface morphology was analyzed. The real contact area was considerably smaller than the nominal contact area, and many micro voids were present at the interfaces. These micro voids could be the main channel of interfacial breakdown, and the contact asperities could inhibit breakdown. A higher density and larger average area of real contact asperities results in more obstacles the breakdown encounters and causes the interfacial ramped DC breakdown voltage to be higher.

Abstract:Interfacial Transition Zones (ITZ) with high porosity are easier pathways for damage initiation and propagation. However, their mechanical performance has hardly been examined owing to the length scale of the microregions, as well as the heterogeneous and opaque constituent properties, which have been increasingly studied in recent years. This study presents a comprehensive review of the ITZ, determining strategies at the meso-micro level, quantitative characterization, and physical features. It focuses on the effects of various casting and material composition factors on the microstructural and mechanical properties of the ITZ, including porosity, thickness, volume, and elastic modulus. The correlations between the microstructures and the essential mechanical properties are discussed in detail. The weak bonding properties of the ITZ can be tailored by the material composition, which changes its internal microstructure, enhances the adhesion of the paste to aggregates, and fills micropores in cement. Several approaches can be employed to achieve this, such as adding minerals, increasing the curing age, and adjusting the water-cement ratio and sand fineness. The content of the weak ITZ can be reduced by optimizing the size distribution and volume fraction of the aggregates. Furthermore, modelling the gradient distribution of the ITZ thickness and elastic modulus is crucial in numerical simulations to enable an accurate investigation of the damage accumulation process in concrete. This study also identifies the challenges in the mechanical behavior of ITZ and serves as an engineering design guide for more advanced fracture-resistant concrete structures.

Crack Extension Resistance and Fracture Properties of Quasi-Brittle Softening Materials like Concrete Based on the Complete Process of Fracture

Abstract:The crack extension resistance and fracture properties are studied in detail for quasi-brittle materials like concrete with a softening traction-separation law by investigating the complete fracture process. The computed samples are the three-point bending notched beams of concrete with different sizes tested by other researchers. The softening traction-separation law which was proposed by Reinhardt et al. based on direct tension tests for normal concrete materials was chosen in the computations. Different distribution shapes of the cohesive force on the fictitious crack zone were considered for the corresponding loading states. The computations were mainly based on the analytic solutions for this problem using Gauss–Chebyshev quadrature to achieve the integration which is singular at the integral boundary. The crack extension resistance curves in terms of stress intensity (K R -curves) were determined by combining the crack initiation toughness K_ Ic^ini that is the inherent toughness of the material needed to resist the crack initiation in the case that is in the lack of an extension of the main crack with the contribution due to the cohesive force along the fictitious crack zone during the complete processes of fracture. The situation of crack propagation can be judged by comparing K R -curves of crack extension resistance with the stress intensity factor curves which were calculated using the lengths of the extending crack and the corresponding loads at each loading states, e.g., when the crack extension resistance curve(K R -curve) is lower than the stress intensity factor curve, the crack propagation is stable; otherwise, it is unstable. In the computation, the obtained relationship between the crack tip opening displacement CTOD and the amount of crack extension for the complete fracture process is in agreement with the testing results of other researchers.

Abstract:Electrical breakdown process of ceramics is a complex process related to electrical, thermal, and light effects. It has attracted lots of attentions. But the mechanism of dielectric breakdown is still under debate, especially for the solid ceramics. In this study, the ceramics with different grain size were sintered at different temperatures. A square pulsed voltage of 27 kV with the pulse width of 7 mu s was generated to breakdown the ZnO ceramics with a thickness of 2 mm. Electric breakdown process of these ceramics were investigated using a homemade high- time-resolution electric detection system with the resolution < 1 ns. Compared the electric behaviors of ZnO ceramics with different grain sizes during the breakdown process, it is clear that the whole electric breakdown process could be divided into three main steps, all of which can completed within 7 mu s. The first breakdown step is the pores break-down due to the electric field concentration, and the second step is the grain boundaries breakdown, and then the bulk grain is broken-down leading to form the whole electrical breakdown channel. The data shows that the breakdown process of the grains has the longest duration, the grain boundary is the second, and the pores breakdown is the shortest. For the ceramics with different grain sizes, the breakdown durations of the grain boundaries are different. The duration and electrical breakdown speed of the three step processes are directly affected by the resistance uniformity and carrier concentration of the materials.

Abstract:Different factors such as gas composition inside the low voltage circuit breaker (LVCB) chamber and the residual plasma in the post-arc stage affect the breakdown process, which in turn affects the breaking capacity of LVCBs. In this paper, the effects of non-parallel electrode structure, gas temperature and pressure, electrode temperature, and gap distance on gap breakdown of hot electrode under high temperature gas conditions were studied, for which a particle-in-cell/Monte-Carlo collision simulation model has been established, which takes into account the effects of high-temperature gas components, cathode electron thermal emission, electron collision ionization and other effects, and simulation studies have been conducted. The simulation results show that the increase in gap gas temperature, the decrease in air pressure, and the increase in electrode temperature will lead to the gap breakdown more easily. With the increase in the gap length, the breakdown voltage increases, but the average electric field intensity required for breakdown decreases. In the non-parallel electrode structure, the breakdown occurs first at the position with the shortest gap distance, then the cathode sheath forms and extends along the electrode surface to other areas, and finally, the entire gap breaks down.
