Abstract:With undergraduate subjects, two experiments were designed with different construal levels to explore the effects of construal level on the temporal distance of activity enactment, separately for future vs. past events and for positive vs. negative past events, and to validate the CLT and its inference. The results showed that in both time direction of past and future, there were significant effects of construal levels on temporal distance of activity enactment. The activities represented with higher-level of construal were perceived as occurring at more distant temporal distance. In Experiment 2, there exists a significant interaction between the effects of event value and construal level. That is, events with higher-level of construal and negative value were perceived as occurring at more distant-past and the discrepancies between temporal distances of activity enactment of different construal levels were greater for negative-value events.
