Construal Level Theory: A Review of the Literature

Abstract:Construal level theory proposes that psychological distance,conceptualized as the subjective experiences of time,place,people and hypothetical alternatives to reality,influences an individual's responses to events by changing the way people mentally represent these events.Specifically,high-level construals are more likely to be used in the representation of distal events and low-level construals to be used in the representation of proximal events.The differences in representations bring about significant psychological consequences:the value associated with high-level construal was more influential in choices for distal events,whereas the value associated with low-level construal was more crucial for proximal events.
