The Analysis of Peak Population of Hui People in Shanxi-Gansu in the Qing Dynasty

Abstract:Before the years of Tong-zhi,Hui population occupied considerable proportion in certain counties of Shanxi-Gansu area,for example,the proportion of Hui population was close to or over 3 percent of all in certain counties of the cross-strait part of the Weihe River,and the proportion of Hui was even more than half in He state. However,on the whole region,the proportion of Hui population was low. Studies have shown that before the Tongzhi years,Shanxi Hui people accounted for about 1.5 percent of total population of the province,and Gansu Hui population was olny about 3 percent of the whole,so Hui people only accounted for 2.5 percent of the total population of the two provinces which was estimated to be no more than 8 million. This result was far from the generally agreed saying that there was a large Hui population in Shaanxi and Gansu provinces,especially Hui population was lager than Han in Gansu. The fact that the Hui population of Shanxi-Gansu area in Qing dynasty has been seriously exaggerated had a direct relationship with the northwest war in Tongzhi years.
