Abstract:Composite cathodes were made by blending the LiMn2O4 spinel with 40–60% (wt) LiNi0.8Co0.2O2. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) response gives three pairs of separated redox peaks when a sweep rate of 0.05 mV/s was used over the potential range from 3.0 to 4.5 V vs. Li. These results indicate that the electrochemical lithium extraction/insertion reaction in these composite cathode materials take place in at least three stages during cycling. The oxidation peak 3.75 V, that is seen after the first cycle, is attributed to the extraction of lithium ions from LiNi0.8Co0.2O2, which occurs prior to the extraction of lithium ions from LiMn2O4 at 4.05 and 4.20 V during the charge process. There is also evidence for a further charging process in the LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 at the end of charge. The first peak on the first anodic sweep is higher than that seen on subsequent sweeps. This may be due to the presence of decomposition products on the surface of Ni-based cathode materials. The cycling performance of lithium cells, with LiMn2O4 cathodes, is improved by blending the spinel with LiNi0.8Co0.2O2. The electrochemical activity of LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 at both the beginning and end of charge may prevent overcharge and overdischarge of LiMn2O4 on the 4.1–4.2 V plateaus and increase its stability.
