Abstract:The catalytic performance of Au/oxide catalysts can vary significantly upon the change of oxide species or under different catalyst preparation conditions. Due to its complex nature, the physical origin of this phenomenon remains largely unknown. By extensive density functional theory calculations on a model system, CO oxidation on Au/ZrO2, this work demonstrates that the oxidation reaction is very sensitive to the oxide structure. The surface structure variation due to the transformation of the oxide phase or the creation of structural defects (e.g., steps) can greatly enhance the activity. We show that CO oxidation on typical Au/ZrO2 catalysts could be dominated by minority sites, such as monoclinic steps and tetragonal surfaces, the concentration of which is closely related to the size of oxide particle. Importantly, this variation in activity is difficult to understand following the traditional rules based on the O-2 adsorption ability and the oxide reducibility. Instead, electronic structure analyses allow us to rationalize the results and point toward a general measure for CO + O-2 activity, namely the p-bandwidth of O-2, with important implications for Au/oxide catalysis.
Identification of Active Sites in Pt–Co Bimetallic Catalysts for CO Oxidation

Abstract:Identifying the active sites of catalysts under working conditions is crucial for precise understanding of reaction mechanisms and rational design of catalysts. However, the nature of active sites of bimetallic catalysts for CO oxidation is still a subject of debate. Herein, we employ in situ X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy to monitor the realistic structures of active centers in a bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalyst during CO oxidation. This catalyst brings 100% CO conversion at room temperature and 30-fold higher turnover frequency than monometallic Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The in situ studies reveal that under the CO oxidation condition, a fraction of Co atoms are segregated from the PtCo alloy into the surface CoO species that decorates the remaining PtCo nanoparticles through direct Pt-O-Co interfacial bonds. The bond-valence analysis unravels one dangling Co-O coordination per Co2+ in the surface CoO, which acts as the active sites for O-2 activation. The synergy between the CoO species and the PtCo alloy brings the superior catalytic activity. We also show that the directly connected Pt-O-Co interface is more beneficial to the catalytic performance than the unconnected Pt-CoO interface and provides a promising strategy toward the design of advanced catalysts for the redox reaction.
Synchrotron Radiation in Situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure and in Situ X-ray Diffraction Analysis of a High-Performance Cobalt Catalyst Towards the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Transition metal-based composites are one of the most important electrocatalysts because of their rich redox chemistry. The reaction kinetics of a redox couple is dependent on the chemical valence and is a key issue in electrocatalytic performance. In this study, a metallic Co catalyst was synthesized by pyrolyzing Co(OH)(2). The effect of the chemical valence of Co on the oxygen reduction reaction ( ORR) was investigated by comparing the electrocatalytic properties of three Co-based catalysts containing Co-0, Co2+, and Co3+. The electrocatalytic properties were evaluated mainly by linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) where the Co-based catalysts were used as cathodes. The LSV results show that the ORR peak current density increases with a decrease in chemical valence. The DBFC with the Co-0 cathode exhibits highest power density and good durability. In situ X-ray diffraction combined with in situ X-ray absorption fine structure tests was carried out to reveal the dynamic microstructure evolution of the Co-0 cathode during ORR. The in situ results clearly demonstrate the evolution of metallic Co to Co(OH) (2) and then to CoOOH during the ORR.
A High Throughput Optical Method for Studying Compositional Effects in Electrocatalysts for CO2 Reduction

Abstract:In the problem of electrochemical CO 2 reduction, the discovery of earth-abundant, efficient, and selective catalysts is essential to enabling technology that can contribute to a carbon-neutral energy cycle. In this study, we adapt an optical high throughput screening method to study multi-metallic catalysts for CO 2 electroreduction. We demonstrate the utility of the method by constructing catalytic activity maps of different alloyed elements and use X-ray scattering analysis by the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) method to gain insight into the structures of the most active compositions. Among combinations of four elements (Au, Ag, Cu, Zn), Au 6 Ag 2 Cu 2 and Au 4 Zn 3 Cu 3 were identified as the most active compositions in their respective ternaries. These ternary electrocatalysts were more active than any binary combination, and a ca. 5-fold increase in current density at potentials of −0.4 to −0.8 V vs. RHE was obtained for the best ternary catalysts relative to Au prepared by the same method. Tafel plots of electrochemical data for CO 2 reduction and hydrogen evolution indicate that the ternary catalysts, despite their higher surface area, are poorer catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction than pure Au. This results in high Faradaic efficiency for CO 2 reduction to CO.
CO Oxidation on Au/TiO2: Condition-Dependent Active Sites and Mechanistic Pathways

Abstract:We present results of ab initio electronic structure and molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD), as well as a microkinetic model of CO oxidation catalyzed by TiO2 supported Au nanocatalysts. A coverage-dependent microkinetic analysis, based on energetics obtained with density functional methods, shows that the dominant kinetic pathway, activated oxygen species, and catalytic active sites are all strongly depended on both temperature and oxygen partial pressure. Under oxidizing conditions and T < 400 K, the prevalent pathway involves a dynamic single atom catalytic mechanism. This reaction is catalyzed by a transient Au-CO species that migrates from the Au-cluster onto a surface oxygen adatom. It subsequently reacts with the TiO2 support via a Mars van Krevelen mechanism to form CO2 and finally the Au atom reintegrates back into the gold cluster to complete the catalytic cycle. At 300 ≤ T ≤ 600 K, oxygen-bound single Oad-Au(+)-CO sites and the perimeter Au-sites of the nanoparticle work in tandem to optimally catalyze the reaction. Above 600 K, a variety of alternate pathways associated with both single-atom and the perimeter sites of the Au nanoparticle are found to be active. Under low oxygen pressures, Oad-Au(+)-CO species can be a source of catalyst deactivation and the dominant pathway involves only Au-perimeter sites. A detailed comparison of the current model and the existing literature resolves many apparent inconsistencies in the mechanistic interpretations.
Dynamic Atom Clusters on AuCu Nanoparticle Surface During CO Oxidation.

Abstract:Supported alloy nanoparticles are prevailing alternative low-cost catalysts for both heterogeneous and electrochemical catalytic processes. Gas molecules selectively interacting with one metal element induces a dynamic structural change of alloy nanoparticles under reaction conditions and largely controls their catalytic properties. However, such a multicomponent dynamic-interaction-controlled evolution, both structural and chemical, remains far from clear. Herein, by using state-of-the-art environmental TEM, we directly visualize, in situ at the atomic scale, the evolution of a AuCu alloy nanoparticle supported on CeO2 during CO oxidation. We find that gas molecules can "free" metal atoms on the (010) surface and form highly mobile atom clusters. Remarkably, we discover that CO exposure induces Au segregation and activation on the nanoparticle surface, while O2 exposure leads to the segregation and oxidation of Cu on the particle surface. The as-formed Cu2O/AuCu interface may facilitate CO-O interaction corroborated by DFT calculations. These findings provide insights into the atomistic mechanisms on alloy nanoparticles during catalytic CO oxidation reaction and to a broad scope of rational design of alloy nanoparticle catalysts.
HRTEM and STEM-HAADF characterisation of Au-TiO2 and Au-Al2O3 catalysts for a better understanding of the parameters influencing their properties in CO oxidation

Abstract:Gold catalysts supported on titania (Au-TiO(2)) and alumina (Au-Al(2)O(3)) were prepared by deposition-precipitation with urea and then activated before characterisation and reaction in CO oxidation, either by calcination in air at 500 °C or reduction under H(2) at 300 °C. Gold nanoparticles with average size in the range 2-4 nm were obtained, with calcination leading to larger gold nanoparticles than reduction. For Au-TiO(2), high activity was observed in CO oxidation at room temperature, independent of the activation treatment. This high activity could not be correlated to the presence of sub-nanometer gold clusters as reported in the literature, since they could not be detected by atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning-transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). In the case of Au-Al(2)O(3), the performance in CO oxidation was found to strongly depend on the water content in the reaction gas feed and on the activation conditions, with calcination resulting in a poorly active catalyst whereas reduction gave activity of the same order as Au-TiO(2). A comparative study of Au-TiO(2) and Au-Al(2)O(3) by electron microscopy did not reveal distinct differences in the shapes of the Au nanoparticles, which are mostly flattened through interaction with the substrate in both samples, with side profile shapes varying from rounded hemispherical to well faceted truncated cubo-octahedra. More faceting is found for the samples calcined at 500 °C than reduced at 300 °C. Various possible parameters affecting the catalytic properties of gold in CO oxidation are discussed in the context of the relevant literature.
Elucidating the active phases of CoOx films on Au(111) in the CO Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:Using CoOx thin films supported on Au(111) single crystal surfaces as model catalysts for the CO oxidation reaction we show that three reaction regimes exist in response to chemical and topographic restructuring of the CoOx catalyst as a function of reactant gas phase CO/O2 stoichiometry a finding that highlights the versatility of catalysts and their evolution in response to reaction conditions. Under oxygen-lean conditions and moderate temperatures (below 150C degrees) partially oxidized films containing CoO were found to be efficient catalysts. In contrast, stoichiometric CoO films containing only Co2+ form carbonates in the presence of CO that poison the reaction below 300 C degrees. Under oxygen-rich conditions a more oxidized catalyst phase forms containing Co3+ species that is effective in a wide temperature range. Resonant photoemission spectroscopy (ResPES) revealed the unique role of Co3+ sites in catalyzing the CO oxidation. DFT calculations provided deeper insights into the pathway and free energy barriers for the reactions on these oxide phases.

Microscopic Insight into the Activation of O2 by Au Nanoparticles on ZnO(101) Support

Abstract:We carry out density functional theory calculations to cast insight on the microscopic mechanism of the activation of O-2 by Au-7 cluster on ZnO(101)-O support. The excellent catalytic activity of Au/ZnO catalyst was ascribed to the distribution of polarized surface charge associated with interface structure. It is found the stoichiometric ZnO(101)-O easily adsorbs and dissociates O-2 to form very stable oxygen-saturated surface. For Au-7 on stoichiometric ZnO(101)-O surface, the two Au atoms neighboring to O could accumulate positive charges, which then upshift the d-band centers toward the Fermi level. These favor the adsorption and dissociation of O-2, providing two Au activation sites. In contrast, for the Au-7 on the oxygen-saturated ZnO(101)-O, all Au atoms become neighboring to O and consequently provide seven activation sites. The workfunction difference between the Au7 and support induces effective polarized surface charges, substantially promoting 02 adsorption and dissociation both dynamically and thermodynamically. Further analysis on the effect of different Au positions demonstrates the polarized charge as the microscopic driving force for catalysis. These results would help design of better metal/oxide catalysts by providing important implications for the role of atomic and electronic structures.
Identification Of High-Performance Single-Atom Mxenes Catalysts For Low-Temperature Co Oxidation

Abstract:On the basis of first-principles calculations, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ru, Rh, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au decorated Mo2CO2-delta monolayers are investigated as potential single-atom catalyst (SAC) candidates for low-temperature CO oxidation reaction. From a first screening based on intuitive criteria concerning metal sintering, CO poisoning, and O-2 adsorption strength, the Zn/Mo2CO2-delta system is selected for further scrutiny by means of reactivity calculations for different CO concentrations. A lower barrier is found for Eley-Rideal reaction mechanism than for the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The low Eley-Rideal barrier (0.15 eV) is attributed to the fact that the Zn atom weakens the O-O bond considerably and the electrophilic attack of CO weakens it further. The main conclusion is that this system is a promising low-temperature SAC candidate with a lower energy barrier for CO oxidation than noble metal and other 2D SAC systems investigated.
Deciphering the Metal–Support Interaction of Au/ZnO Catalyst Induced by H2 and O2 Pretreatment

Abstract:Proper hydrogen treatment to Au/ZnO catalyst can induce both ZnOx overlayer and Au–Zn alloy. Under CO oxidation condition, the dealloying process occurs and large amount of Au–ZnO active interface forms. The ZnOx overlayer is dynamic stable and its interaction with Au can increase both activity and stability of the Au/ZnO catalyst. Metal–support interaction (MSI) provides great possibilities to tune the activity, selectivity, and stability of heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, the Au/ZnO catalyst is prepared by commercial ZnO and chloroauric acid, and the structure evolution of the catalyst pretreated by H2 and O2 gas at varied temperature is investigated to provide mechanistic insights of MSI. It is found that the H2 treatment at 300 °C and above can induce the formation of both the ZnOx overlayer and bulk Au–Zn alloy. In contrast, the O2 treatment can form the ZnOx overlayer at 500 °C and above without the formation of Au–Zn alloy. It is also revealed that the ZnOx overlayer is dynamically stable (permeable), which can provide access for reactant molecules during the reaction process. And, the Au–Zn alloy can recover to Au and ZnO under the CO oxidation reaction condition, which can be deemed as a re‐activation process that endows H2‐treated samples with the superior activity and stability.

Abstract:The synergetic effect in multicomponent catalysts is a topic of profound industrial importance and intense academic interest. On a newly identified multicomponent catalyst, Au/IrO(2)/TiO(2), first-principles density-functional theory is analyzed to clarify the outstanding catalytic activity of the system for oxidative reactions at high temperatures. By comparing CO oxidation on interfaces and single-component surfaces, it is revealed that a high dispersion of a more active oxide (IrO2), on a more inert oxide (TiO2) is the key. It preserves the sintering resistance of Au supported on less active oxides, while at the same time promoting oxidative reactions that occur at the Au/active-oxide interface.

Abstract:Identification of structures of active sites of catalysts under realistic conditions is key for understanding the structure–reactivity relationship and mechanism of catalytic reactions. Various in situ techniques and novel theoretical concepts (e.g. ab initio atomistic thermodynamics) have been developed. As an example, oxidation of stepped Pt(110) and Pt(332) surfaces has been studied using density functional theory, scanning tunneling microscopy and high resolution x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. It was found that ridge Pt atoms are highly reactive and one-dimensional (1D) oxide stripes form along the Pt ridge. Within the 1D oxide stripes, the reactivity is low, and reaction occurs only at the defect sites and/or boundaries of 1D PtO2 stripes. Furthermore, for stepped Pt(332) surfaces, a site highly active in promoting carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation was identified due to the formation of novel transition states at the boundary of the 1D oxide and chemisorption domains. Since the ratio of the ridge atoms increases with decrease of the particle sizes, the present study highlights the importance of the 1D oxide components for the reactivity of supported nanosize catalysts.

Abstract:Rotation during reaction Determining changes in heterogeneous catalysts under reaction conditions can provide insight into mechanisms. Under reaction conditions, not only can metal nanoparticles change shape but their interaction with the oxide support could also be affected. Yuan et al. used aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy to study gold nanoparticles on titanium surfaces at low electron beam doses. During carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation at total pressures of a few millibars and 500°C, they observed that gold nanoparticles rotated by about 10° but returned to their original position when CO was removed. Abstract:The highly dispersed metal (e.g. Au) nanoparticles have exhibited exceptional catalytic activity for several reactions, including CO oxidation. Their high catalytic activity has been attributed to nanoparticles nano-structural effects (including cluster thickness, shape, chemical information, and number of atoms of the cluster). The three dimensional exact structure and chemical bonding state of these supported nanoparticles is still challenging to be quantified by conventional methods due to their limitations in understanding size distribution of supported metal nanoparticles that are usually less than 1 nm (< 100 atoms). In this paper, the structure of Au heterogeneous catalysts has been successfully characterized by High Resolution Electron Microscopy (HREM), Z-contrast Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). The ligand protected Au 13 nanoparticles on TiO 2 support have been studied by ozone and thermal treatments to remove the ligands. The ozone removal method results in the truncated cuboctahedral structure while the thermal treatment results in the cuboctahedral structure. The ozone treatment yields less Au nanoparticles sintering than thermal treatment. Their FCC structure was confirmed by quantified Z-contrast STEM, HREM and its Fourier transformation.
A new approach to active supported Au catalysts

Abstract:In this article we attempted to review the key issues relevant to tremendous oxidation activity of supported Au catalysts. We described in detail newly developed Au catalysts, remarkably active for low-temperature CO oxidation, using Au phosphine complexes and clusters as precursors for gold metal particles and as-precipitated wet metal hydroxides as precursors for oxide supports. Particular attention was placed on chemical interaction of the Au complexes and clusters with the oxide surfaces and its critical role in preparation of tremendously active supported Au. Simultaneous transformations of both the gold and support precursors during temperature-programmed calcination provoked the formation of Au catalysts highly active for the low-temperature CO oxidation. Abstract:Atomically dispersed supported metal catalysts offer new properties and the benefits of maximized metal accessibility and utilization. The characterization of these materials, however, remains challenging. Using atomically-dispersed Pt supported on crystalline MgO (chosen for its well-defined bonding sites for Pt) as a prototypical example, in this work, we demonstrate how systematic density functional theory calculations (for assessing all the potentially stable Pt sites) combined with automated EXAFS analysis can lead to unbiased identification of isolated, surface-enveloped platinum cations as the catalytic species for CO oxidation. The catalyst has been characterized by atomic-resolution imaging, EXAFS, and HERFD-XANES spectroscopies; the proposed Pt site are in full agreement with experiment. This theory-guided workflow leads to rigorously determined structural models and provides a more detailed picture of the structure of the catalytically active sites than what is currently possible with conventional EXAFS analysis. As this approach is efficient and agnostic to the metal, support, and catalytic reaction, we posit that it will be of broad interest to the materials characterization and catalysis communities.

Abstract:Au/α-Fe2O3 catalysts for CO oxidation were prepared by chemical coprecipitation at different pH values, and the as-prepared samples were calcined or UV (λ=254 nm) irradiated, respectively. The structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2 adsorption and desorption analysis (BET) and temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and the active Au species on the catalysts was investigated. The results show that Au3+, Auδ+ (0=δ=1) and Au0 coexist on the surface of Au/α-Fe2O3 catalysts treated at 110 °C, and their activity order is Au3+> Auδ+> Au0. The sample prepared at pH=8 shows the best catalytic performance since it has more Au3+ species and high specific surface area. High temperature calcination can cause serious deactivation due to the reduction of Au3+ and Auδ+ species, together with the decrease of the specific surface area of α-Fe2O3. UV irradiation can also cause the reduction of oxidative Au species and the growth of Au particle.
Operando Insights into CO Oxidation on Cobalt Oxide Catalysts by NAP-XPS, FTIR, and XRD

Abstract:Cobalt oxide Co3O4 has recently emerged as promising, noble metal-free catalyst for oxidation reactions but a better understanding of the active catalyst under working conditions is required for further development and potential commercialization. An operando approach has been applied, combining near ambient (atmospheric) pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), or X-ray diffraction (XRD) with simultaneous catalytic tests of CO oxidation on Co3O4, enabling one to monitor surface and bulk states under various reaction conditions (steady-state and dynamic conditions switching between CO and O2). On the basis of the surface-specific chemical information a complex network of different reaction pathways unfolded: Mars-van-Krevelen (MvK), CO dissociation followed by carbon oxidation, and formation of carbonates. A possible Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) pathway cannot be excluded because of the good activity when no oxygen vacancies were detected. The combined NAP-XPS/FTIR results are in line with a MvK mechanism above 100 °C, involving the Co3+/Co2+ redox couple and oxygen vacancy formation. Under steady state, the Co3O4 surface appeared oxidized and the amount of reduced Co2+ species at/near the surface remained low up to 200 °C. Only in pure CO, about 15% of surface reduction were detected, suggesting that the active sites are a minority species. The operando spectroscopic studies also revealed additional reaction pathways: CO dissociation followed by carbon reoxidation and carbonate formation and its decomposition. However, due to their thermal stability in various atmospheres, the carbonates are rather spectators and also CO dissociation seems a minor route. This study thus highlights the benefits of combining operando surface sensitive techniques to gain insight into catalytically active surfaces.

Abstract:We present a High-Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HP-XPS) and first-principles kinetic Monte Carlo study addressing the nature of the active surface in CO oxidation over Pd(100). Simultaneously measuring the chemical composition at the surface and in the near-surface gas-phase, we reveal both O-covered pristine Pd(100) and a surface oxide as stable, highly active phases in the near-ambient regime accessible to HP-XPS. Surprisingly, no adsorbed CO can be detected during high CO2 production rates, which can be explained by a combination of a remarkably short residence time of the CO molecule on the surface and mass-transfer limitations in the present set-up.
