Abstract:In this paper, a new ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor was synthesized simply and economically and applied for Cu2+ detection in water samples. This nanosensor was a type of dual-emission quantum dots which was composed silica coated red CdTe quantum dots and glutathione modified green CdTe quantum dots. The probe exhibits a dynamic response range for Cu2+ from 6.7 x 10(-8) to 8 x 10(-7) mol L-1 with a detection limit of 2.5 x 10(-8) mol L-1. Other alkali, alkaline earth and transitional metal ions including K+, Na+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ had no significant interferences on Cu2+ determination. Binding Cu2+ to the nanosensor make the colour of the solution change from green to orange under UV light irradiation, which illustrates that this new sensor can realize visually detection of Cu2+.

Abstract:It is well known that the conventional electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor rely on the heterogeneous assay formats that involves the immobilization of biorecognition probe on the electrode surface before signal collection, which inevitably cause the efficiency of bio-recognition reactions to be limited owing to the existence of local steric hindrance. Herein, a robust, magnetic, and self-accelerated ECL nanosensor based on the multifunctionalized cobalt ferrite magnetite nanoparticles (CoFe2O4 MNPs) was firstly designed for copper ion (Cu2+) detection in quasi-homogeneous system. The prepared nanosensor has its unique advantages compared to the iron oxide (Fe3O4) MNPs-based nanosensor for which magnetic nanoparticle just provide the reaction interface and magnetic enrichment. Specifically, the prepared CoFe2O4 MNPs-based biosensing platform could bridge the gap between aqueous phase and solid materials in homogeneous solution, achieving the expansion of reaction area and the reduction of local steric hindrance with high biorecognition efficiency. Furthermore, compared with the common magnetite nanosensors, the prepared CoFe2O4 MNPs achieved a set of magnetic collection, biorecognition probes immobilization, rapid separation and signal amplification in an ECL measurement system because it could act as a new co-reaction accelerator in ECL ternary (PTC-NH2 + S2O82- + CoFe2O4) system, achieving a self-accelerated biosensing platform with significant enhancement of the detection sensitivity. As expected, the prepared CoFe2O4 MNPs-based ECL nanosensors were successfully applied for ultrasensitive detection of Cu2+ via click reaction with a linear range from 10−13 M to 1.0 × 10−7 M, which exhibited high sensitivity, excellent selectivity and good reproducibility.

Abstract:A novel colorimetric copper(II) biosensor has been developed based on the high specificity of alkyne–azide click reaction to the catalysis of copper ions and unmodified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the signal reporter. The clickable DNA probe consists of two parts: an azide group-modified double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) hybrid with an elongated tail and a short alkyne-modified single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). Because of low melting temperature of the short ssDNA, these two parts are separated in the absence of Cu2+. Copper ion-induced azide–alkyne click ligation caused a structural change of probe from the separated form to entire dsDNA form. This structural change of probe can be monitored by the unmodified AuNPs via mediating their aggregation with a red-to-blue colorimetric read-out because of the differential ability of ssDNA and dsDNA to protect AuNPs against salt-induced aggregation. Under the optimum conditions, this biosensor can sensitively and specifically detect Cu2+ with a low detection limit of 250nM and a linear range of 0.5–10μM. The method is simple and economic without dual-labeling DNA and AuNPs modification. It is also highly selective for Cu2+ in the presence of high concentrations of other environmentally relevant metal ions because of the great specificity of the copper-caused alkyne–azide click reaction, which potentially meets the requirement of the detection in real samples.

Abstract:A novel, highly sensitive and selective colorimetric method for copper(II) detection through copper(I) catalyzed alkyne–azide cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC) has been developed. Copper(I) is produced by the electrochemical reduction of copper(II) via Bulk Electrolysis (BE) with coulometry. The azide- and alkyne-functionalized Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) can aggregate quickly (10 min) through CuAAC reaction, resulting in the color of the solution changing from red to purple. Furthermore, the change of color is closely related to the concentration of copper(II), and 1 nM copper(II) could be detected by the naked eye. Additionally, the proposed method has good selectivity to copper(II) in the presence of other common metal ions.

Abstract:Excessive copper ions (Cu2+) cause serious environmental pollution and even endanger the health of organisms. Fluorescence chemosensing materials are widely used in the detection of metal ions due to their simple operation and high sensitivity. In this study, SiO2-encapsulated single perovskite quantum dot (PQD@SiO2) core-shell nanostructures which show strong, stable, and green fluorescence are synthesized and composited with gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) which show Cu2+-sensitive and red light-emitting fluorescence to obtain a visualized ratiometric fluorescence sensor (AuNCs/PQD@SiO2) for the detection of Cu2+. In the visualized detection of Cu2+, the green fluorescence emitted from the ion-insensitive PQD@SiO2 component is used as a reference signal and the red fluorescence emitted by ion-sensitive AuNC component is adopted as a sensing signal. In the presence of Cu2+, the red fluorescence is quenched whereas the green fluorescence remains stable, which results in a visualized fluorescence color change from orange-red to yellow and finally to green with increasing Cu2+ concentration. The significant change in the fluorescence color of AuNCs/PQD@SiO2 in response to Cu2+ enables a rapid, sensitive, and visualized detection of Cu2+. Further accurate and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence analysis of Cu2+ can be accomplished by measuring the ratio of fluorescence intensities at 643 and 520 nm (I643/I520) at a certain Cu2+ level. The developed AuNCs/PQD@SiO2-based sensor has been validated by its satisfactory application in the detection of Cu2+ in human serum and environmental water samples.

Abstract:A simple and effective ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor for the selective detection of Cu(2+) has been developed by covalently connecting the carboxyl-modified red fluorescent cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) to the amino-functionalized blue fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs). The sensor exhibits the dual-emissions peaked at 437 and 654 nm, under a single excitation wavelength of 340 nm. The red fluorescence can be selectively quenched by Cu(2+), while the blue fluorescence is a internal reference, resulting in a distinguishable fluorescence color change from pink to blue under a UV lamp. The detection limit of this highly sensitive ratiometric probe is as low as 0.36 nM, which is lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defined limit (20 μM). Moreover, a paper-based sensor has been prepared by printing the hybrid carbon dots-quantum dots probe on a microporous membrane, which provides a convenient and simple approach for the visual detection of Cu(2+). Therefore, the as-synthesized probe shows great potential application for the determination of Cu(2+) in real samples.

Abstract:Copper is a transition metal essential for life. At elevated concentrations, however, it is highly toxic to organisms such as algae, fungi and many bacteria, and in humans, may adversely affect the gastrointestinal, hepatic and renal systems.[1, 2] As such, the detection and measurement of copper ions in water has become increasingly important, especially in point-of-use formats. Several methods exist for the detection of Cu2+ ions, including those based on organic dyes,[3–6] semiconductor nanocrystals,[7] and spectroscopy.[8–10] The read out mechanisms for these methods, however, often require sophisticated instrumentation. In contrast, colorimetric methods are extremely attractive for point-of-use applications, since they can be easily interpreted with the naked eye or low-cost portable instruments.

Abstract:The commercially available glucometer has been the most successful point-of-care (POC) sensor up to date. However, the glucometer only responds to glucose rather than other species. Extending the use of the glucometer for monitoring different types of targets would potentially revolutionize the applicability of the glucometer. Here we report a new sensing strategy for sensitive and selective detection of Cu(2+) based on multi-invertase conjugated magnetic bead signal amplification labels and a glucometer transducer. The Cu(2+) is in situ reduced to Cu(+) by sodium ascorbate, which catalyzes the click linking between the alkynyl-DNA immobilized on a disposable screen printed carbon electrode and the azido-DNA attached to the invertase/magnetic bead conjugates. The numerous invertase on the magnetic bead labels through Cu(+)-catalyzed click chemistry reaction convert sucrose to glucose, which is monitored by the glucometer and offers amplified digital readings for Cu(2+) detection. By employing the multi-invertase signal amplification, as low as 10nM Cu(2+) can be detected. Our method also shows high selectivity for Cu(2+) against other metal ions owing to the highly specific Cu(+)-catalyzed click chemistry reaction, and is applicable for monitoring Cu(2+) in real river samples. Our strategy can be easily expanded for the monitoring of a wide range of targets when coupled with various recognition events.

Abstract:Copper is one of the extensively utilized heavy metals in modern industry and can be easily released into the environment due to high solubility of copper ions (Cu2+). Its percolation in water and accumulation along the food chain pose a serious threat to human health. Hence, it is of great significance to explore a novel, facile, and sensitive detection method for Cu2+. Based on the intriguing photo-to-electricity conversion process of CdS QDs, as well as desirable electrochromic property of WO3 NFs, a dual-modal photoelectrochemical (PEC) and visualized detection platform for Cu2+ is fabricated. The electrochromic WO3 NFs act as a display for the Cu2+ concentration, of which the color change could be observed directly by the naked eye, while the PEC signal provides accurate data for further analysis. In this work, a sensitive detection of Cu2+ in the range of 1 × 10-5 to 5 × 10-4 M is achieved, with a detection limit of 3.2 × 10-6 M. The dual-modal analysis gives more choices for signal readouts with enhanced quantification reliability, which is adaptive for diverse application scenarios, especially for on-site investigation. This protocol offers a prototype for quick and reliable detection of the Cu2+ concentrations, and is promising for other environmental pollutants.

Abstract:This work presented a photocurrent response mechanism of quantum dots (QDs) under illumination with the concept of a quantum photoelectric effect. Upon irradiation, the photoelectron could directly escape from QDs. By using nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to capture the photoelectron, a new visual system was proposed due to the formation of an insoluble reduction product, purple formazan, which could be used to visualize the quantum photoelectric effect. The interaction of copper(II) with QDs could form trapping sites to interfere with the quantum confinement and thus blocked the escape of photoelectron, leading to a "signal off" visual method for sensitive copper(II) detection. Meanwhile, by using QDs as a signal tag to label antibody, a "signal on" visual method was also proposed for immunoassay of corresponding protein. With meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic-capped CdTe QDs and carcino-embryonic antigen as models, the proposed visual detection methods showed high sensitivity, low detection limit, and wide detectable concentration ranges. The visualization of quantum photoelectric effect could be simply extended for the detection of other targets. This work opens a new visual detection way and provides a highly efficient tool for bioanalysis.

Abstract:A colorimetric sensor for Cu(II) ions has been developed based on mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs were modified with mixed SAMs consisting of mercaptosuccinic acid and the product of electrochemically triggered Michael addition reaction of 4-thiouracil and catechol. In the presence of Cu(II) ions, the coordination of Cu(2+) to catechol-terminated AuNPs leads to aggregation-induced changes of surface plasmon resonance. The cost-effective chemical sensor allows rapid, sensitive and selective detection of Cu(2+) ions, indicating its potential application in environmental field.
