Abstract:The Schelling model of segregation was introduced in economics to show how micro-motives can influence macro-behavior. Agents on a lattice have two colors and try to move to a different location if the number of their neighbors with a different color exceeds some threshold. Simulations reveal that even such mild local color preferences, or homophily, are sufficient to cause segregation. In this work, we propose a stochastic generalization of the Schelling model, based on both race and wealth, to understand how carefully architected placement of incentives, such as urban infrastructure, might affect segregation. In our model, each agent is assigned one of two colors along with a label, rich or poor. Further, we designate certain vertices on the lattice as "urban sites," providing civic infrastructure that most benefits the poorer population, thus incentivizing the occupation of such vertices by poor agents of either color. We look at the stationary distribution of a Markov process reflecting these preferences to understand the long-term effects. We prove that when incentives are large enough, we will have "urbanization of poverty," an observed effect whereby poor people tend to congregate on urban sites. Moreover, even when homophily preferences are very small, if the incentives are large and there is income inequality in the two-color classes, we can get racial segregation on urban sites but integration on non-urban sites. In contrast, we find overall mitigation of segregation when the urban sites are distributed throughout the lattice and the incentives for urban sites exceed the homophily biases. We prove that in this case, no matter how strong homophily preferences are, it will be exponentially unlikely that a configuration chosen from stationarity will have large, homogeneous clusters of agents of either color, suggesting we will have racial integration with high probability.

Abstract:This paper first offers a tribute to Samuel Stouffer (1900–1960), a major contributor to social psychology. He helped to establish probability surveys as a useful method for social science, led three major studies at midcentury, and introduced important new concepts and statistical methods. Thus, both conceptually and methodologically, he shaped modern social psychology. Second, the paper revitalizes Stouffer’s most famous concept—relative deprivation. A new meta-analysis demonstrates that relative deprivation predicts a wide range of important outcomes, so long as it measures resentment with data from individuals and is paired with dependent variables of similar scope. Unfortunately, sociology largely abandoned the concept because it failed to meet the overstated early claims made for it in the collective protest domain. The history of this use and disuse of relative deprivation is summarized and critiqued.

Abstract:We extend our model of wealth segregation to incorporate migration and study the tendencies towards dual segregation - segregation due to identity (migrants vs. residents) and segregation due to wealth. We find a sharp, non-linear transformation between segregated and mixed-wealth states as neighborhood wealth thresholds become less stringent, allowing agents to move into neighborhoods they cannot afford. The number of such moves required for the onset of this transformation varies inversely with the likelihood of agents willing to move into less wealthy neighborhoods. We also find that this sharp transformation from segregated to mixed wealth states is simultaneously accompanied by a corresponding non-linear transformation from a less identity-segregated to a highly identity-segregated state. We argue that the decrease in wealth segregation does not merely accompany, but in fact drives the increase in identity-based segregation. This implies that lowering wealth segregation necessarily exacerbates identity segregation and that therefore, this trade-off could to be an important consideration in designing urban policy. Additionally, we find that the time taken for the tolerance levels of residents to be breached is significantly lesser under rapid migration. This rapidity of breach of tolerance could potentially underpin the intensity of resident responses to sharp bursts of migration.

Relative Deprivation in Context: How Contextual Status Homogeneity Shapes the Relationship Between Disadvantaged Social Status and Health

Abstract:We examine the relationship between disadvantaged social status and adverse health outcomes within a context-contingent thesis of relative deprivation. We argue that the health effect of low relative status depends on contextual status homogeneity, which is measured as income inequality and group diversity. Applying mixed-effect modeling to the pooled 2011-2013 Chinese General Social Survey and exploring the cross-level interactions, we found that 1) people in the bottom socioeconomic quartile report significantly better health when contextual income inequality is lower; 2) racial-ethnic minorities report significantly better health when contextual ethnic diversity is higher; and 3) religious minorities also report significantly better health when contextual religious diversity is higher. Ethnic minorities and Muslims even report better health than the majorities in highly diverse contexts. Thus, contextual status homogeneity can modify or even eliminate the health disparities caused by relative deprivation. The context-level moderation of relative deprivation may be explained by the processes of social comparison, institutional resources, and social capital formation. Our findings suggest that health disparities are an interactive product of contextual homogeneity and individual's relative deprivation, and underscore the importance of the nature of the social environment where relative deprivation occurs. In this way, we contribute to knowledge about reducing health disparities along the social gradient.

Abstract:Social segregation is a ubiquitous feature of human life. People segregate along the lines of income, religion, ethnicity, language, and other characteristics. This study provides the first experimental examination of decentralized matching with search frictions and institutionalized segregation. The findings indicate that, without a segregation institution, high types over-segregate relative to the equilibrium prediction. We observe segregation attempts even when equilibrium suggests that everyone should accept everyone else. In the presence of a segregation institution, we find that, while the symmetric segregation institution increases matching success rate and efficiency in one environment, it has weak or no effect in a steep-incentive environment. By adding an entry cost to a flat-incentive market, however, the asymmetric segregation institution leads to an increased matching success rate and efficiency in both environments, which underscores the importance of a coordination device.
The social context of assimilation: testing implications of segmented assimilation theory.

Abstract:Segmented assimilation theory has been a popular explanation for the diverse experiences of assimilation among new waves of immigrants and their children. While the theory has been interpreted in many different ways, we emphasize its implications for the important role of social context: both processes and consequences of assimilation should depend on the local social context in which immigrants are embedded. We derive empirically falsifiable hypotheses about the interaction effects between social context and assimilation on immigrant children’s well-being. We then test the hypotheses using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Our empirical analyses yield two main findings. First, for immigrant adolescents living in non-poverty neighborhoods, we find assimilation to be positively associated with educational achievement and psychological well-being but also positively associated with at-risk behavior. Second, there is little empirical evidence supporting our hypotheses derived from segmented assimilation theory. We interpret these results to mean that future research would be more fruitful focusing on differential processes of assimilation rather than differential consequences of assimilation.

Abstract:The Schelling model of segregation between two groups of residential agents (Schelling 1971; Schelling 1978) reflects the most abstract view of the non-economic forces of residential migrations: be close to people of 'your own'. The model assumes that the residential agent, located in the neighborhood where the fraction of 'friends' is less than a predefined threshold value F, tries to relocate to a neighborhood for which this fraction is above F. It is well known that for the equal groups, depending on F, Schelling's residential pattern converges either to complete integration (random pattern) or segregation. We investigate Schelling model pattern dynamics as dependent on F, the ratio of the group numbers and the size of the neighborhood and demonstrate that the traditional integrate-segregate dichotomy is incomplete. In case of unequal groups, there exists the wide interval of the F-values that entails the third persistent residential pattern, in which part of the majority population segregates, while the rest remains integrated with the minority. We also demonstrate that Schelling model dynamics essentially depends on the description of agents' residential behavior. To obtain sociologically meaningful results, the agents should be satisficers, and the fraction of the agents who relocate irrespective of the neighborhood state should be non-zero.

Abstract:In Schelling's segregation model agents of two ethnic groups reside in a regular grid and aim to live in a neighborhood that matches the minimum desired fraction of members of the same ethnicity. The model shows that observed segregation can be the emergent result of people interacting under spatial constraints in pursuit of such homophily preferences. Even mild homophily preferences can generate high degrees of segregation at the macro level. In modern, ethnically diverse societies people might not define similarity based on ethnicity. Instead, shared tolerance towards ethnic diversity might play a more significant role, impacting segregation and integration patterns in societies. Bearing this consideration in mind, we extend Schelling's model by dividing the population of agents into value-oriented and ethnicity-oriented agents. Using parameter sweeping, we explore the consequences that the mutual adaptation of these two types of agents has on ethnic segregation, value segregation, and population density in the neighborhood. Such consequences are examined for equally sized ethnic groups and for majority-minority conditions. The introduction of value-oriented agents reduces total ethnic segregation when compared to Schelling's original model, but the new phenomenon of value segregation appears to be more pronounced than ethnic segregation. Furthermore, due to cross-contagion, stronger ethnic homophily preferences lead not only to greater ethnic segregation but also to more value segregation. Stronger value-orientation of the tolerant agents similarly leads to increased ethnic segregation of the ethnicity-oriented agents. Also, value-oriented agents tend to live in neighborhoods with more agents than ethnicity-oriented agents. In majority-minority settings, such effects appear to be more drastic for the minority than the majority ethnicity.

Abstract:Segregation models often focus on private racial preference but overlook the institutional context. This paper represents an effort to move beyond the preference centricity. In this paper, an ideal Pigovian regulatory intervention is emulated and added into Schelling's (1971) classic spatial proximity model of racial segregation, with an aim to preserve collective welfare against the negative externalities induced by the changing local racial compositions after individual relocations. A key discovery from a large number of cellular automata is that the Pigovian regulation tends to result in less segregated but also less efficient (in terms of aggregate utility) residential patterns than laissez faire. This finding, albeit from a highly stylized model, bears intellectual relations to an important practical question: What are the potential racial effects of Pigovian local planning interventions, such as financially motivated anti-density zoning or the collection of a development impact fee? On top of its modest policy implications, this paper demonstrates a bottom-up computational modelling approach to reconcile the preference-based and institution-orientated academic perspectives regarding racial residential segregation. Behavioral and Topological Heterogeneities in Network Versions of Schelling's Segregation Model

Abstract:Agent-based models of residential segregation have been of persistent interest to various research communities since their origin with James Sakoda and popularization by Thomas Schelling. Frequently, these models have sought to elucidate the extent to which the collective dynamics of individual preferences may cause segregation to emerge. This open question has sustained relevance in U.S. jurisprudence. Previous investigation of heterogeneity of behaviors (preferences) by Xie & Zhou has shown reductions in segregation. Meanwhile, previous investigation of heterogeneity of social network topologies by Gandica, Gargiulo, and Carletti has shown no significant impact to observed segregation levels. In the present study, we examined effects of the concurrent presence of both behavioral and topological heterogeneities in network segregation models. Simulations were conducted using both Schelling's and Xie & Zhou's preference models on 2D lattices with varied levels of densification to create topological heterogeneities (i.e., clusters, hubs). Results show a richer variety of outcomes, including novel differences in resultant segregation levels and hub composition. Notably, with concurrent increased representations of heterogeneous preferences and heterogenous topologies, reduced levels of segregation emerge. Simultaneously, we observe a novel dynamic of segregation between tolerance levels as highly tolerant nodes take residence in dense areas and push intolerant nodes to sparse areas mimicking the urban-rural divide.

Size Matters: The Structural Effect on Social Relations

Abstract:This paper follows the literature on separating out the structural effects of social contexts from individuals’ own preferences in determining social relationship formations. While prior work has almost exclusively focused on compositional measures of social context, we posit that, net of the effect of group composition, total size has a distinct effect on the level of segregation in a population. In this paper, we first formalize a theoretical framework for the analysis of the size effect. Under the assumptions of (1) maximization of preference in choosing a friend, (2) multidimensionality of preference, and (3) racial homophily, we conducted analyses using agent-based modeling techniques and yielded three main findings. First, increasing total population size decreases the likelihood of forming intergroup relations. Second, the size effect increases with the number of preference dimensions. Third, the size effect decreases with the strength of preference. In addition, we empirically tested our theory using friendship nomination data from Add Health and found results consistent with our prediction that increasing total school size reduces the share of interracial friends in a school. Socio-economic Segregation in a Population-Scale Social Network

Abstract:We propose a social network-aware approach to studying socio-economic segregation. The key question that we address is whether patterns of segregation are more pronounced in social networks than the common spatial neighborhood-focused manifestations of segregation. We, therefore, conduct a population-scale social network analysis to study socio-economic segregation at a comprehensive and highly granular social network level: 17.2 million registered residents of the Netherlands that are connected through around 1.3 billion ties distributed over four distinct tie types. We take income assortativity as a measure of socio-economic segregation, compare a social network and spatial neighborhood approach, and find that the social network structure exhibits two times as much segregation. As such, this work challenges the dominance of the spatial perspective on segregation in both literature and policymaking. While at a particular scale of spatial aggregation (e.g., the geographical neighborhood), patterns of socio-economic segregation may appear relatively minimal, they may in fact persist in the underlying social network structure. Furthermore, we discover higher socio-economic segregation in larger cities, shedding a different light on the common view of cities as hubs for diverse socio-economic mixing. A population-scale social network perspective hence offers a way to uncover hitherto 'hidden' segregation that extends beyond spatial neighborhoods and infiltrates multiple aspects of human life.

Abstract:We propose a dynamic model where the real estate market generates wealth segregation within a town. The model develops on the Schelling's checkerboard dynamics with one main difference: Agents are fully characterized by their wealth, which changes with the progress of the model dynamics. The driver of the segregation is a positive neighborhood externality such that households' utility is increasing in the average wealth of the neighbors. The identification of a potential function enables prediction of the long-run limiting behavior of the dynamics: Wealth segregation is an endemic result, unless a perturbation at the individual level is introduced. Public policies that mimic the perturbation can reduce wealth segregation.

Abstract:De facto school segregation, stemming from structural racism, has myriad consequences for children's development. Extant research documents the implications of segregated schools for children's academic resources and opportunities, but there is less attention on the social processes that unfold as a result of school segregation, particularly in early and middle childhood. Social processes–including ethnic-racial socialization, stereotyping and prejudice, and intergroup contact–are important mechanisms wherein school segregation affects academic and social development, thereby upholding a recursive cycle of structural racism. We synthesize cross-disciplinary theoretical and empirical research to propose a conceptual framework for how school segregation relates to social processes that shape early and middle childhood development. We conclude with reflections and future directions including prioritizing the social benefits and costs of desegregation for minoritized children, expanding research within an intersectional framework, accounting for structural inequities and injustice in child development research more broadly, and implications for education and learning.

The emergence of segregation: from observable markers to group specific norms

Abstract:Observable social traits determine how we interact in society and remain pervasive even in our globalized world. While a popular hypothesis states that they may help promote cooperation, the alternative explanation that they facilitate coordination has gained ground in recent years. Here we explore this framework and present a model that investigates the role of ethnic markers in coordination games. We consider fixed markers characterizing agents that use reinforcement learning to update their strategies in the game. For a wide range of parameters, we observe the emergence of a collective equilibrium in which markers play an assorting role. However, if individuals are too conformists or greedy, markers fail to shape social interactions. These results extend and complement previous work focused on agent imitation and show that reinforcement learning is a good candidate to explain many instances of ethnic markers.

Abstract:Empirical distributions of wealth and income can be reproduced using simplified agent-based models of economic interactions, analogous to microscopic collisions of gas particles. Building upon these models of freely interacting agents, we explore the effect of a segregated economic network in which interactions are restricted to those between agents of similar wealth. Agents on a 2D lattice undergo kinetic exchanges with their nearest neighbours, while continuously switching places to minimize local wealth differences. A spatial concentration of wealth leads to a steady state with increased global inequality and a magnified distinction between local and global measures of combatting poverty. Individual saving propensity proves ineffective in the segregated economy, while redistributive taxation transcends the spatial inhomogeneity and greatly reduces inequality. Adding fluctuations to the segregation dynamics, we observe a sharp phase transition to lower inequality at a critical temperature, accompanied by a sudden change in the distribution of the wealthy elite.
Counterfactual Slopes and Their Applications in Social Stratification

Abstract:This paper addresses two prominent theses in social stratification research, the great equalizer thesis and Mare's (1980) school transition thesis. Both theses describe the role of an intermediate educational transition in the association between socioeconomic status and an outcome variable. However, the descriptive regularities of the two theses may be driven by differential selection into the intermediate transition, which prevents the two theses from having substantive interpretations. We propose a set of novel counterfactual slope estimands, which capture these theses under hypothetical interventions that eliminate the differential selection. We thereby construct selection-free tests for these theses. Compared with the existing literature, we are the first to explicitly provide nonparametric causal estimands, which enable us to conduct more principled analysis. We are also the first to develop flexible, efficient, and robust estimators for the two theses based on efficient influence functions. We apply our framework to a nationally representative dataset in the United States and re-evaluate the two theses. Findings from our selection-free tests suggest that the descriptive regularities are misleading for the substantive interpretation of the great equalizer thesis, but not for that of the school transition thesis. Additionally, the counterfactual slopes also provide a new framework for evaluating the inequality impacts of policy interventions.
