Abstract:The great concerns and deep misunderstandings the western public shows towards Tibet have a profound historical and mental origin,that is,the "myth of Shangri-La" about old Tibet. The expedition of German explorers in Tibet,whose travel writings and memoirs created a German "myth of Tibet" and gave a highly colored account of China's "negative image",was the major way through which the Germans kept contact with Tibet before the Second World War. It deeply affected the Germans’ mental structure concerning the Tibet issue. In view of this we should pay more attention to the "foundational" work,thus smashing the "myth of Shangri-La" by effective ways and telling the western public a true Tibet.

Abstract:How did Tibet become part of the modern Chinese state? Even today, as Tibet is an internationally recognized part of the People’s Republic of China, the evasive meaning of ‘Chinese suzerainty over Tibet’ is a reverberant point of contention in nationalist debates. The question of whether ‘suzerainty’ more strongly implicates Tibetan independence or Chinese sovereignty is a false controversy that has impeded progress in understanding China’s transition from empire to nation-state. This article examines Anglo–Chinese diplomatic negotiations following the 1904 British invasion of Tibet using newly uncovered Chinese archival documents to demonstrate the central role played by the appropriation and manipulation of international legal discourse in determining Tibet’s status in the international system and offers a generalizable theory of the mechanics of international order transformation.

Abstract:The Macartney Embassy, the first official British diplomatic mission to China, contributed to the visual record and understanding of China in Britain. The embassy artists were ambitious in their mission to deliver authentic visual knowledge of China to the British at the same time that they were subconsciously influenced by both the old chinoiserie tradition, and the nascent British Enlightenment thought process. In contrast to contemporary Britain's scientific and humanitarian advancements, the embassy's portrayal of China was pastoral, barbaric, and autocratic, allowing the British to revel in the humanism and progressivism of their own values and social system.

Abstract:Preceded by Renaissance, followed by Enlightenment, the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, as an important cultural and intellectual event in European minds, has not received the attention it deserves. The Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns which happened in 1690s England, also known as the Battle of the Books. In the battle about the superiority of ancient culture or modern culture in the West, China as an exotic country of the East was repeatedly mentioned, and in the polemical writings between Sir William Temple and William Wotton, China was given two entirely different faces: "Politically Prominent China" and "Pagan China". By analyzing the state of Chinese knowledge and the mechanism of image production in the polemical writings of British intellectuals, this paper discusses the role and ideological function played by the image of China in Enlightenment Britain, and then deliberates the construction of the British state, religious consciousness, and reflexive subject in the Early Modern period.

Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism

Abstract:The article offers an analysis of the creation of the image of the PRC in the context of the One Belt — One Road initiative in the Western mass media (on the example of the British news channel BBC News). The author of the study proceeds from the thesis about their important role in shaping and promoting the image of the country. In the context of information globalization, the role that the media play in international relations is multiplied many times over. A special place in such processes is occupied by global news channels, which are often of decisive importance in constructing world public opinion, setting the agenda and assessing the importance of ongoing or planned events. The Belt and Road Initiative is not only an example of global cooperation, but also a reflection of a new approach to development in the modern world as a whole, which has a serious impact on China's international prestige and image. In the course of the study, we find out that the Western mass media more often perceive the One Belt, One Road initiative in a negative aspect, ignoring the real achievements and successes of this global project. On the example of the analysis of news releases of the British television channel BBC News, it was revealed that, despite external neutrality, its editorial staff uses different methods and technologies to form a negative image of China. The preference of the editors of the TV channel to economic and political topics, specific events and positions of states as an information occasion was revealed. With the external prevailing neutral position of the TV channel towards One Belt, One Road, its real achievements and successes are ignored, the negative assessment of the Western expert community is covered, and lexemes with a negative meaning are often used.

Abstract:The Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet serves as an important religious symbol and an embodiment of Tibetan culture. Ever since Chinese troops invaded Tibet in the 1950s, the Chinese government has attempted to control Tibet, including converting the Potala Palace and its rich material culture into a secular institution on display for tourists. Now void of the Dalai Lama and most of its contents, the Potala has become a façade for public consumption of Chinese state-led narratives and a symbol of cultural oppression. Through their approaches to heritage management and tourism, and with the aid of the Potala’s listing as a UNESCO World Heritage site, China is capitalizing on Tibet’s cultural heritage, undermining the Tibetan people and their culture, and controlling the narrative of Tibetan history to alter the collective memory of Tibetans.

Abstract:Abstract This article chronicles the British Indian state’s attempt, and eventual failure, to break the Chinese monopoly on trading tea in Tibet at the very time Britain replaced Qing China as the largest exporter of tea on the global stage. I explore this short history by analysing the trade marts established in Tibet and the eastern Himalayas between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, not simply as centres of imperial trade between two powerful empires, but as occupied territories meant to form key nodes on land networks throughout the Tibetan plateau and highlands. Following its failure to push Indian tea into Tibetan markets, the British government in India experimented with the sale of opium in British-controlled marts in Tibet, thus marking important continuities in commodity trade competition with China across market spheres. The competition between Chinese and Indian tea has been richly documented as a narrative of ascendancy and industrial modernisation that rapidly reshaped global imperial hierarchies as well as local socio-cultural relationships (including those of labour accumulation). By contrast, the British failure in Tibet highlights how militarised frontier-making alone advanced market capitalism throughout the trans-Himalayan theatre. This article demonstrates how the exigencies of war propaganda and imperial frontier-making shaped not only the spatial and cultural frames of tea consumption in Tibet, but the territorial entities of the Himalayan “borderlands”, and indeed, “Tibet” itself.

Abstract:The article reveals the mechanisms of the East Turkestan’s image representation which represented in British press during Kashgaria’s expedition of sir D. Forsythe - an official of the Anglo-Indian administration and the political Adviser on Central Asian Affairs. The theme fits into the problems of the image of the colonial "Other". The process of its formation is shown through the investigation of the textual and visual components of the East Turkestan’s image which represented in British press during the period. It is the analysis of the novation and continuity of metropolitan citizens’ perception of their colonies that is in the focus of our attention in the first mass illustrated magazine “The Illustrated London News” and such conservative press as “The Daily Telegraph”, “The Morning Post”, “The Standard”, “The Manchester Courier”, “The Leeds Intelligencer”. It is the analysis of specific stylistic means that helps to construct the image of the colonial "Other" on the pages of the British press. The author analyzes the peculiarities of the Victorians ' perception of the political titulature of East Turkestan, local residents, their appearance and personal qualities, natural conditions, cities, settlements, and features of everyday life.

Lamas, Empresses and Tea: Early Twentieth-Century Sino-British Encounters in Eastern Tibet

Abstract:At the turn of the twentieth century, the Tibetan plateau was a zone of intense imperial contact—and competition—between British India and Qing China. Even before the 1904 Younghusband Expedition to Lhasa, Indian rupees had become the primary currency of commercial exchange across the plateau, and British explorers had gathered detailed knowledge of both the presumed natural resource bounty of eastern Tibet and the lucrative border tea trade traversing it. This article explores models manifested by these interactions between British and Qing officials, merchants and explorers in the Kham region of ethnographic Tibet and the role empires played in the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century global spread of Euro-American norms. Although Sichuan officials directly engaged with administering Kham shared a common perception of Khampa society with their British counterparts, they also recognised the encroachment of Indian rupees and British explorers as challenges to Qing authority, if not a prologue to territorial expansion paralleling the contemporaneous scramble for concessions in coastal China. Beginning with the establishment of the Zongli Yamen in 1861, close Sino-British interaction along two tracks, British ‘lessons’ in statecraft and diplomacy in the imperial capital Beijing and commercial and political actions in the imperial borderland of Kham, provided models for Qing assertion of exclusive authority on the plateau. Two globalising norms inflected in these British models—territoriality and sovereignty—fostered transformative policies in the borderland during the first decade of the twentieth century. Implemented by Sichuan officials, these policies sought to undermine Lhasa's local challenge to Chinese authority via monasteries, thereby legitimising appeal to international law to repel regional challenges from both British India and Russia. This article analyses in depth two examples of these policies in action: a silver coin modelled on the Empress Victoria Indian rupee and a monopoly tea company partly modelled on British Indian tea firms and the Indian Tea Association. Both contributed to weakening the political, social and economic power projected into Kham by British India and Lhasa. The adaptation of these models in Qing policies fostered by the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Sino-British encounter in Kham reveals the conduits through which Euro-American norms of authority were shared, and demonstrates their power to transform relations in the interstices of global power, where empires met empires and states met states.

The Evolution of the Image of China in the United States during the Cold War

Abstract:This article describes the evolution of the image of China in the United States (US) during the Cold War. Aware that China–US bilateral relations have been influenced by periods of conflict and animosity, harmony and détente, the article argues that the image of China has always been embedded in a network of events—birth of the PRC (People’s Republic of China [PRC], Korean War, Sino-Soviet alliance) that prevented American public opinion from developing an objective and unbiased picture of the PRC. Since 1950s, China has always been linked to the idea of the ‘Yellow Peril’. Moreover, the lack of a direct contact between China and America further thwarted the opportunity of shaping a fair picture of the PRC. Although recognising that during the Cold War American political parties played a significant role in conveying a negative image of China, this article shows how media helped in strengthening Chinese stereotypes among the American public. Analysing all articles published by Time, National Geographic and Readers’ Digest from 1949 to 1972, the article highlights both similarities and differences of the way in which these magazines introduced China to their readers.
The Looking Glass -Spillover Effects of Image Constructs:Transcultural Studies of National Images and Its Epistemological Principles

Abstract:Transcultural studies of national images discusses in focus the constructive representation and communication of national images in alien lands,a thesis that this article summarises,from the perspective of espistemology,as the "looking glass-spillover"effects of image constructs.Of these,the"looking-glass"effect refers to representation,with "pollution by imaginary motivation","non-relevance to facticity","contextual contingencies"and"subjective berredung" as its four pillar principles in analyses and explications of China images in the West.By way of comparison,the"spillover" effect points in the direction of communication,containing the four principles of"hegemony","image approximation / distanciation","collusion"and"plurality exclusion"that characterise the description of the transborder flow of China images as Western constructs around the world.These principles,which should be regarded as a device of exposition,are derived from Kantian categories of Verstand,with a progressive relation from one to another.They aim to provide a coherent system of logically-related categories to interpret theorising of transcultural representation of national images,the "looking-glass" effect,the"spillover"effect.

Abstract:Drawing on an examination of Chinese language textbooks for Tibetan ethnic students in the Tibet Autonomous Region of mainland China, this study scrutinises the representation of Tibetan images and the official attitude towards Tibet embedded in the textbooks. Using multimodal discourse analysis (MDA), the paper investigates how government perceptions of Tibet are constructed through the co-deployment of visual and textual semiotic resources in Chinese language textbooks. This study suggests an overall positive attitude towards Tibet shown in the textbooks. However, the references to Tibet or Tibetans are usually situated as topics of the ‘past’, which indicates a sense of their being uncivilised or backwards. The positive yet stereotyped portrayal of Tibet is in line with national identity construction to ensure a unified nation-state. This study examines both text and image in textbooks in order to understand state ideologies and official attitudes towards a minority group.

Abstract:As a global power, China is a provocative case study for nation branding practitioners and scholars. It is mired in a contested process of global image-making animated by Western media headlines, often negative ones, which draw the ire of the country's Foreign Ministry and its ripostes. Into the fray are also self-representations, or nation branding moments, that disseminate idealized visions of the country. This paper dissects two such promotional events: an art exhibit and a science fiction blockbuster through visual and narrative analysis. It considers how cultural diplomacy, political ideology, and visuality coalesce to engender images of the nation, punctuated by the country's prized cultural values and global political yearnings. Rather than examining official branding campaigns, this study is grounded in the liminal space of popular culture where there is state oversight, and yet, also some creative freedom. The findings point to two time-related themes and visual strategies that showcase the country through its distinct dynastic past and through anticipatory spectacles of its hoped-for future. These serve as a harbinger of nationalistic visions to come. An understanding of this time-sensibility and visuality of Brand China yields a keener sense of how the country reinforces itself as a global leader.
On the Innate Tensions In the Western Rationalist Culture:A Way to Understand the Secret Behind the Image of China Constructed by the Western Mass Medias

Abstract:As for the image of China constructed presently by the western mass medias,this paper points out that this image has resulted from the innate tensions within the western rationalist culture.Starting from the critique of religions,this rationalist culture has successfully constructed human beings as the subject of life at the dimension of individuals,nations and the history. However,at the same time,the development and enrichment of this rationalist culture is always accompanied by the romantic critique of modernity. The latter has finally been embodied in the correspondence between Karl Marx's critique of the private property and other contemporary philosophers' (like John Dewey's ) critique of the belief in rationality.These two critiques are then integrated into one in those western Marxist's(Like George Lukacs') critiques of the capitalist society.In this way,the innate tensions within the rationalist culture have been made clear and pushed to the surface.What is most noteworthy about this is that these innate tensions have not naturally resulted in the dissolution of the rationalist culture,but rather have strengthened its ideological language,since the critiques have stopped at the theoretical and negative critiques.The image of China constructed by the western mass media recently is just the direct product of this strengthened language of rationalism.

Abstract:This study analyses two authoritative texts and a map from the Ming and Qing eras to examine the political relationship between China and Tibet in the Ming period. It finds that in these documents Tibet was not classified as being a part of the realm governed by the Ming Empire. This casts doubt on the claim advanced by the People’s Republic of China that Tibet has been a part of China ‘since antiquity’. An important conclusion of this study is that, when taking recourse to historical texts to justify or refute territorial claims, the structure and content of the text as a whole, and not just isolated phrases or formulations, should be taken into account.
Translation as Representation: Western Imagination of China from the Eighteenth Century to the Present

Abstract:This article explores how China has been imagined in Western literature and culture from the eighteenth century to the contemporary era, using a series of emblematic figures to examine practices of appropriation and troping. It seeks to reveal how the historical construction and representation of China is refashioned in our time, against the background of China’s rise to global power and a concomitant growing sense of doubt, fear and hostility in Europe and North America surrounding its ascendency. Two case studies are employed to elaborate on what this article considers to be exemplifications of Orientalism in Sino-Western cultural history: Daniel Defoe and Voltaire in Enlightenment Europe, and Western popular culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In doing so this article addresses how China has incrementally come to be translated and represented as a principal Other for Euro-America, and how their perceptions of, and writings about, China today echo and reinforce its translations and representations produced by the Defoe-Voltaire axis: the binary schema of demonization and romanticization. It concludes that this mechanics at work in framing China for reception and consumption by the Anglophone readership provide effective means of translating and representing China as an ideologically menacing Other, thereby begetting self-perpetuating representations.

Abstract:This article takes a look at Chinese state policies toward the predominantly Buddhist community in Tibet from the 1950s till the year 2008 and analyzes to what extent these policies have changed, if at all. After providing some background information in relation to state ideology, the article looks at the decades of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and gives an overview of state policies. Many of these policies show that the Chinese state has followed a policy of high handedness toward this region, which has broader implications in relation to human rights issues and security. “Reforms” introduced in Tibet have had more to do with tightening state control over Tibet rather than raising the material standards of the indigenous people. Ultimately, to understand the complex situation in Tibet, one needs to examine at the interaction between religion, nationalism and state reform in the region. The article argues that state reform needs to be more balanced, taking into consideration the religious sentiments of the local people.
