Abstract:Novel cyanine dyes (Sqb and Cyb3) with carboxylbenzyl group and different methine chains as solar cell sensitizers were synthesized and the photoelectrochemical behaviors of the TiO2 nanocrystalline electrode sensitized by them were investigated. The results show that Isc (2.76mA/cm2), monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) (46%) and η (1.7%) of TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cell sensitized by Sqb were higher than that of TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cell sensitized by Cyb3 when TiO2 nanostructured porous film was 6.5μm thick and was sensitized for 6h and 4h, respectively. The excited state level of these dyes matches the conductive band edge of TiO2 nanoparticles. Therefore, the sensitization of the dyes can increase the photocurrent density of TiO2 nanocrystalline electrode.

Abstract:Dye sensitizer is one of the most important components in dye-sensitized solar cell(DSC).The classification of dye sensitizers and the requirements to achieve high light-to-energy conversion efficiency for DSC are introduced.According to the classification of the natural dye,the development of natural dye sensitizers used in DSC is introduced,such as chlorophyll,anthocyan,carotene and tannic acid respectively,and the difference between them.Research progress in natural dyes should benefit the development of commercial production of DSC due to their low cost and environment benign.

Abstract:This work deals with the fabrication and evaluation of color-changing dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) that include N-propanoic acid-functionalized spiropyrans and spirooxazines as sensitizing dyes. We investigated the photophysical properties of these compounds in various solvents and pH conditions using UV-Vis spectroscopy, and their behavior on TiO2 photoanode surfaces using a combination of UV-Vis and FT-IR. Their performance as sensitizing dyes for DSSCs was also analyzed. This study revealed a number of unique properties for this class of compounds that affect their performance as both photochromic compounds and DSSC sensitizers, which allow for future creation of efficient photochromic DSSCs.

Abstract:Twenty-one natural dyes,which were extracted from natural plant materials such as dragon fruit pericarp,ginger,black fungus,camphor leaf and chestnut shell,were used as sensitizers for dye sensitized solar cells(DSCs).The photoelectrical properties of DSCs based on these natural dyes are evident differences: the short-circuit current density varies from 0.245-1.441 mA/cm2,the open-circuit voltage ranges from 0.327-0.546 V,the fill factor changes from 0.362-0.585,and the efficiency varies from 0.029%-0.46%.The efficiency and short-circuit current density data from these DSCs shows a linear relation with a slope of 0.32 in value,which means efficiency has a very close connection with short-circuit current density.Among these natural dyes based DSCs,mangosteen pericarp extract based DSCs has the best photoelectrical property parameters whereas black sesame extract based DSCs has the worst.The higher efficiency of the former is mainly contributed to strong sunlight absorption and stable bonding between dye molecule and TiO2 particles.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are the most promising low-cost photovoltaic devices. Whereas, the absorption bands of most organic sensitizers, the most vital component in DSSCs, are limited to a relatively narrow visible range. To obtain efficient sensitizer, a series of D-A-pi-A metal-free dyes have been designed based on one of the best sensitizers WS-9 by modifying auxiliary acceptor and characterized theoretically. The results illustrate that introduction of auxiliary heterocycle acceptor is revealed to very narrow band gap (HOMO-LUMO), leading to an obvious red-shifted broad near-infrared absorption band in the range of 750-1950 nm compared to WS-9 (536 nm). The critical parameters in close connection with the short-circuit current density (J(sc)), open circuit voltage (V-oc), including singlet excited state lifetime (tau), total dipole moments (mu(normal)), the conduction band of edge of the semiconductor substrate (Delta E-CB), and regeneration driving forces (Delta G(reg)) are superior to those of WS-9. Therefore, these novel sensitizers would be a promising candidate for improving the performance of the DSSCs.

Abstract:A series of quinoxaline based metal-free organic sensitizers has been designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The absorption, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for all sensitizers have been systematically investigated. It is found that the incorporation of quinoxaline unit instead of thienopyrazine unit results in a negative shift of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels for FNE44, FNE45, FNE46, and FNE47, in comparison to FNE32, which induces a remarkable enhancement of the electron injection driving force from the excited organic sensitizers to the TiO2 semiconductor. Moreover, when the alkyl substituents are removed from the spacer part in FNE44 to the donor part in FNE45 and FNE46, a more conjugated system and a bathochromically shifted maximum absorption band can be realized, which consequently results in an increased light harvesting efficiency and photogenerated current. In addition, the length of the alkyl substituents on the donor part has a certain influence on the DSSC performance. Combining the three contributions, FNE46,based DSSC with liquid electrolyte displays the highest power conversion efficiency (eta) of 8.27%. Most importantly, a eta of 7.14% has been achieved for FNE46 based quasi-solid-state DSSC and remained at 100% of the initial value after continuous light soaking for 1000 h, which indicates that FNE46 is appropriate for promising commercial application. Our findings will facilitate the understanding of the crucial importance of molecular engineering and pave a new path to design novel metal-free organic dyes for highly efficient and stable DSSCs.

Abstract:Solar cells are pivotal in harnessing renewable energy for a greener and more sustainable energy landscape. Nonetheless, eco-friendly materials for solar cells have not been as extensive as conventional counterparts, highlighting a significant area for further investigation in advancing sustainable energy technologies. This study investigated natural dyes from cost-effective and environmentally friendly blueberries and mulberries. These dyes were utilized as alternative sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Alongside the natural dyes, a green approach was adopted for the DSSC design, encompassing TiO2 photoanodes, eco-friendly electrolytes, and green counter-electrodes created from graphite pencils and candle soot. Consequently, the best-optimized dye sensitizer was mulberry, with an output power of 13.79 µW and 0.122 µW for outdoor and indoor environments, respectively. This study underscored the feasibility of integrating DSSCs with sensitizers derived from readily available food ingredients, potentially expanding their applications in educational kits and technology development initiatives.

Abstract:Anthocyanin and Chlorophyll extracted from Troll flower and Cypress leaf respectively are used as natural sensitizers in dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs), with their optical and electrochemical properties investigated. UV-Vis absorption measurement showed that the mixture of two dyes enabled an enhanced and wider absorption in the wavelength range of 300 nm-700 nm compared to each single dye. FTIR results proved that anthocyanin is chemically adsorbed onto the TiO2 film, while it is physical adsorption for chlorophyll. The energy level offsets on the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface for each dye and the dye mixture with different ratios were calculated from the electrochemical analysis, which affect the electron injection and dye regeneration efficiencies. The optimized ratio of the two dyes in the mixture was found to be similar to 2:5, inducing both sufficient charge transfer driving force and minimal energy loss. By incorporating this mixture into the solar cell as co-adsorbing sensitizer, the photovoltaic performance was prominently improved compared with the single dye sensitization system. Abstract:Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated with four naturally occurring anthocyanin dyes extracted from naturally found fruits/juices (viz., Indian jamun, plum, black currant, and berries) as sensitizers. Extraction of anthocyanin was done using acidified ethanol. The highest power conversion efficiencies (η) of 0.55% and 0.53% were achieved for the DSSCs fabricated using anthocyanin extracts of blackcurrant and mixed berry juice. Widespread availability of these fruits and juices, high concentration of anthocyanins in them, and ease of extraction of anthocyanin dyes from these commonly available fruits render them novel and inexpensive candidates for solar cell fabrication. Anthocyanins are naturally occurring biodegradable and nontoxic molecules that are extracted using techniques that involve negligible low cost to the environment and therefore can provide ecofriendly alternatives to synthetic dyes for DSSC production.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are a cost-effective and environmentally benign third-generation photovoltaic technology that is gaining prominence in the changing renewable energy sector. Our study presents the concept of co-sensitization, which involves the combination of TiO2QD with MWCNT/TiO2, in order to improve the efficiency of solar energy conversion greatly. The efficiency of these solar cells is highly dependent on the efficacy of the dye as a photosensitizer. The results indicate that DSSCs employing the co-sensitized approach with TiO2QD achieved an efficiency (η) of 0.331, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.539 (V), a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 0.095 (mA/cm2), and a fill factor (FF) of 37 %. On the other hand, DSSCs utilizing the MWCNT/TiO2 photoanode demonstrated an efficiency (η) of 0.213 %, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.509 (V), a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 0.076 (mA/cm2), and a fill factor (FF) of 17 %. In the ever-changing world of renewable energy, cutting-edge methods like co-sensitization could boost solar energy conversion technology efficiency and sustainability. Innovative methods like employing plant leaf dye as photosensitizers for DSSCs are eco-friendly and could cut production costs. Using natural dyes supports sustainable practices and makes solar energy production more affordable and accessible.

Abstract:This paper reports the optical and photovoltaic traits of a new type of natural organic dye sensitizer derived from the Malaysian Areca catechu (Pinang) fruit. The photovoltaic potential of this dye was determined by fabricating a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). In this work, the effects of various concentrations of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and solvent types on the photovoltaic efficiency of this dye were evaluated. Methanol was the best solvent, obtaining the highest absorbance from natural dye. The absorption analyses showed the excellent dye-stabilizing capacity of CDCA. The Fourier-transform infrared spectra revealed the presence of hydroxyl and carboxylic functional groups in the extracted natural dye, which were shown to be responsible for imparting the stronger electronic coupling and rapid electron transfer upon interaction with the TiO2 surface. The photoluminescence spectral analyses of the dye showed that the inclusion of CDCA as a co-adsorbent can produce a large photocurrent through the narrowing of the band gap. Device performance was measured as a function of co-adsorbent content at the loading times of 0 and 30 min. The efficiency measured after adding CDCA and 30 min of loading time was 0.118%, with short-circuit current density (Jsc) = 0.3 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage (Voc) = 0.536 V, and fill factor (FF) = 73.5%. This short disclosure may contribute towards the development of a natural dye-based efficient DSSC.

Abstract:In this study, a natural dye from the flowers of Mussaenda erythrophylla extracted separately in ethanol and de-ionized water was employed as a photosensitizer in DSSCs. The quantitative phytochemical analyses were performed on both extracts. The existence of flavonoids (anthocyanin) and chlorophyll a pigments in the ethanol extract of the dye was confirmed by the UV-Visible spectroscopy. The stability study performed on the said ethanol extract confirmed that the dye extracted in ethanol was stable in the dark and did not degrade for nearly 50 days. The presence of the dye molecules and uniform adsorption of them on the P25-TiO2 surface were confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, respectively. Moreover, the influence of dye concentration and pH on the optical properties of the dye was also studied. The natural dye extracted in ethanol was employed in DSSCs, fabricated by utilizing the said dye sensitized P25-TiO2 photoanodes, [Formula: see text]/[Formula: see text] electrolyte, and Pt counter electrode. Photovoltaic performances of the fabricated devices were determined under simulated irradiation with the intensity of 100 mWcm-2 using AM 1.5 filter. The device fabricated with the P25-TiO2 photoanode sensitized by the dye extracted in ethanol at pH = 5 exhibited the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.41% with the JSC of 0.98 mAcm-2 which could be attributed to the optimum light absorption in the visible region of solar spectrum by the chlorophyll a and anthocyanin molecules in the extracted natural dye.

Abstract:Bio-inspired dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) from natural plant-based dyes gained importance due to their low cost of manufacturing and environmental friendliness. Not all plants are candidates for DSCCs; they should contain certain pigments such as chlorophyll, anthocyanin, and betalains. Titanium oxide nanoparticles play an important role as electron transporter in the DSSCs. The efficiency is still low in comparison with traditional silicon-based solar cells. There are several challenges to improve the efficiency such as the photodegradation of the dye, the stability of the electrolyte over time, and adhesion of dye with titanium oxide nanoparticles. We reviewed methods for fabricating DSSCs, and the science behind the working principle. Various microscopic and spectroscopic analysis methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and confocal microscopy were presented, for investigating optical properties, surface chemistry of the dyes, and in structural characterization of the plant cells. The photoelectrochemical properties such as conversion efficiency measure the performance of the DSSCs. They are usually in the range of 0.05–3.9% depending on the plant dye used, including plant dyes modified. A critical feature in the design of dye-sensitized solar cells is the attachment of the photosensitizing dye to the titanium oxide surface. We reviewed and summarized the design of binding elements that enhance the binding of the sensitizing dye to the titanium dioxide surface. The efficiencies of covalent linkage of the dye to the titanium surface versus non-covalent binding were discussed, including a survey of functional groups and geometries, to determine the most effective reported.
Optoelectronic performance and co-sensitized excited states characteristics of organic dyes with naphthobisthiadiazole and benzothiadiazole

Abstract:Photosensitizer systems play a crucial role in light absorption and charge transfer processes. Designing and selecting dye molecules with exceptional photoelectric features remains a significant scientific challenge in the realm of solar cell research. The paper explores the photovoltaic properties of two D-A'-π-A dyes (CS-70 and CS-72) both individually and after co-sensitization with chlorophyll derivatives, utilizing density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. The monomeric dye molecules share the same donor and conjugated bridge but differ in their auxiliary receptors (benzothiadiazole and naphthobisthiadiazole). Firstly, the study investigates the impact of various auxiliary acceptors on the properties of the dye molecules by analyzing their geometrical structure, frontier molecular orbitals, spectral properties, chemical reaction parameters, intramolecular charge transfer, electron injection, density of projected states, and dye regeneration. A detailed explanation for the superior performance of CS-72 is provided. Furthermore, a solar cell evaluation model was developed for the short circuit current density ( Jsc ), open circuit voltage ( Voc ), and photoelectric conversion efficiency ( PCE ) of the single dye molecule. Subsequently, simulations of the co-sensitized molecules with chlorophyll are performed, focusing on structure, excited state properties and charge transfer, suggesting that co-sensitization enhances spectral properties, light-trapping, and regeneration abilities, and long-range charge transfer between the dye molecules and chlorophyll can be found. The results also demonstrate that the Jsc of the co-sensitized molecules were improved, which facilitates the realization of a higher PCE . This study provides theoretical support for the potential of co-sensitizing dye molecules with chlorophyll to enhance solar cell efficiency, offering valuable insights for the future development of green, cost-effective, and efficient solar cells.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have emerged as a promising third-generation photovoltaic technology due to their low-cost fabrication, flexibility, reduced energy payback time, and better performance under diffuse light conditions. Natural pigments offer an environmentally and economically superior alternative to traditional synthetic dyes, which often require a complex synthesis and can be toxic. In this study, we assessed the potential of natural dyes extracted from Syzygium cumini and Malva verticillata at two different pH levels as individual and cosensitizers in DSSCs. The characteristic properties such as absorption, size distribution, and emission of the pigments were studied by using various analytical techniques, including UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), zeta potential measurement, and dynamic light scattering. This technique helped deposit a thin TiO2 layer uniformly on the substrate. Additionally, theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT were performed to investigate the electronic and optical properties of dyes. Following validation with experimental UV and FTIR data, the model was employed to predict other cell properties of chlorophyll b, anthocyanidin, and their cocktail and compared with experimental observations. The results indicated that mostly acidified dyes and their combinations exhibited improved light absorption capabilities, enhanced intramolecular charge transfer properties, a reduced energy gap, and increased J SC. Antho/Chl at pH 3 and Chl at pH 3 led to improved photovoltaic performance, as experimentally demonstrated. However, power conversion efficiencies of dyes were theoretically up to 60–63% greater than experimental results. Predictively, antho/Chl pH 3 displayed a higher power conversion efficiency of 4.22%, which is achieved with a V OC and a J SC of over 0.991 eV and 1.536 mA/cm2, respectively.

Synthesis of Zinc Porphyrin with Fluorophenyl Group and Applications in Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:To fabricate highly efficient porphyrin dyes, we designed and synthesized two dyes with different numbers of fluorine atoms, dyes ZnF1 and ZnF2, respectively. These dyes were then connected to TiO2 electrode surface to build dye sensitized solar cells, and we studied the relationship between porphyrins dyes with different numbers of fluorine atoms and the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells. Our results indicate that solar cells with fewer fluorine atoms show higher photocurrent conversion efficiency (PCE). In particular, the ZnF1 solar cell containing one fluorine atom exhibits relatively high short-circuit current density ([Formula: see text] due to its low band gap and remarkable light collection capability. ZnF1 solar cells showed relatively higher short circuit current density ([Formula: see text] due to their low energy band gap and significant light collection ability. With the purpose to further improve the efficiencies, cosensitized with chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) dyes approaches were employed. As a result, the efficiencies have been successfully elevated to 2.71%. Additionally, the UV-vis absorption, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps are used to further verify the test results of the sensitized solar cells.
