Abstract:Novel cyanine dyes (Sqb and Cyb3) with carboxylbenzyl group and different methine chains as solar cell sensitizers were synthesized and the photoelectrochemical behaviors of the TiO2 nanocrystalline electrode sensitized by them were investigated. The results show that Isc (2.76mA/cm2), monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) (46%) and η (1.7%) of TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cell sensitized by Sqb were higher than that of TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cell sensitized by Cyb3 when TiO2 nanostructured porous film was 6.5μm thick and was sensitized for 6h and 4h, respectively. The excited state level of these dyes matches the conductive band edge of TiO2 nanoparticles. Therefore, the sensitization of the dyes can increase the photocurrent density of TiO2 nanocrystalline electrode.

Abstract:Three organic dyes 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridines [2,6-(2,6-R2C6H2N=CMe)(2)]C5H3N (R = methyl, ethyl, isopropyl) (named DM, DE and DP, respectively) were synthesized and assembled onto nanocrystalline TiO2 film to prepare 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridine/N719 co-sensitized photoelectrodes for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs) applications, and their photoelectrochemical performances were studied. In each of the three composite electrodes, the aggregation of N719 was alleviated and its spectra response was enhanced by the 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl) pyridines in region of 400 to 750 nm, and the total resistance of DSSCs was decreased after co-sensitizing with 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl) pyridine, all of which facilitate to improve efficiency of DSSCs. The optimized cell which was co-sensitized with DM gave a short circuit current density of 16.57 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage of 0.72 V and a fill factor of 0.59 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 7.00% under standard global AM1.5 solar irradiation conditions, which is 28.91% higher than that for DSSCs only sensitized by N719 (5.43%). The incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, surface photovoltage spectroscopy and UV-visible adsorption spectra were used to analyze their photoelectrochemical performances, and X-ray single-crystal structural analysis was used to analyze the structures of 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridines.

Abstract:A pyridine-anchor co-adsorbent N,N'-bis((pyridin-2-yl)methylene)-p-phenyl- lenediimine (named L1) and its derivatives N,N'-bis((6-methoxylpyridin-2-yl)methylene)- p-phenylenediimine (named L2) and N,N'-bis((pyridin-2-y1) (methyl)methylene)-p-phenyl- enediimine (named 13) are synthesized and employed in combination with a ruthenium complex N719 in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The prepared co-adsorbent can overcome the deficiency of N719 absorption in the low wavelength region of visible spectrum, offset competitive visible light absorption of I-3(-), suppress the charge recombination and prolong the electron lifetime. The introduction of methyl or methoxyl substituent also has some effect on the performance of DSSCs. A short circuit current density of 14.60 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage of 0.75 V and a fill factor of 0.63 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 6.92% under AM 1.5G solar irradiation are achieved when L2 is used as co-adsorbent, which is 30% higher than that for DSSCs only sensitized by N719 (5.31%) under the same condition. Abstract:A notable organic semiconductor of rubrene with better charge-transport property and wide adsorption spectra is firstly employed as a co-adsorbent into N719 sensitized dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). After co-sensitized the TiO2 photoanode with rubrene, a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 18.69mAcm−2, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.73V and a fill factor (FF) of 0.56 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency (η) of 7.64% under AM 1.5G solar irradiation are achieved, which is 40% higher than that for DSSCs without rubrene (η=5.46%, Jsc=14.29mAcm−2, Voc=0.67V, and FF=0.57) under the same condition. The higher η value of co-sensitized solar cells is attributed to the enhanced photovoltaic parameters Jsc and Voc. The combined light harvesting of N719 and rubrene in the region of 300–750nm and the better charge-transport property of rubrene which promote the electron transfer together lead to the high Jsc, while Voc is enhanced owing to the retarded charge recombination and the prolonged electron lifetime due to the formation of a compact molecular layer composed of rubrene and N719 molecular. Mechanistic investigations are carried out by various electrochemical and spectral characterizations.

Abstract:Two lanthanide complexes, Ln(HPDA)(3)·4EtOH (Ln = Tb, Dy) (H(2)PDA = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, EtOH = ethanol), have been successfully synthesized using hydrothermal or solvothermal methods, and their crystal structures were analyzed by single crystal XRD. Both crystals have orthorhombic symmetry with space group Pbcn, exhibiting three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture through hydrogen bonding interactions. The metal center was coordinated to nine atoms by three pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid ligands. The nine-coordinated lanthanide metal complexes were assembled onto a nanocrystalline TiO(2) film to form co-sensitized photoelectrodes with N719 for dye-sensitized solar cells, and their photoelectrochemical performance was studied. In the tandem structure of composite electrodes, the energy levels of lanthanide metal complexes are reorganized in their single-crystal form, as verified by ab initio calculations. The co-sensitized systems are far superior for electron-injection and hole-recovery compared with single N719-sensitized systems. Luminescence properties were measured and electrochemical analysis was also performed on these complexes.

Abstract:Nanoporous TiO2 electrodes were sensitized by different porphyrin derivatives, tera-hydroxyphenyl porphyrin (THPP) and tera-carboxylphenyl porphyrin (TCPP). Both kinds of sensitized electrodes were characterized by UV-vis, XRD and XPS. The results showed that the interaction between TiO2 and TCPP was stronger than that between TiO2 and THPP. Both kinds of the sensitized electrodes were assembled to photoelectrochemical cells. The photocurrent responses of the photoelectrochemical cell under different incident illumination directions were different significantly. The overall light-to-electric energy conversion yield (η) of TCPP-sensitized cell was 0.11%, while the conversion efficiency of THPP-sensitized cell was 0.06%.

Abstract:Six organic dyes with different conjugated linkers such as furan, bifuran, thiophene, bithiophene, selenophene, and biselenophene have been prepared in combination with the dihexyloxy-substituted triphenylamine donor and the cyanoacrylic acid acceptor. In conjunction with an acetonitrile-based electrolyte and a solvent-free ionic liquid electrolyte, these dyes exhibit 6.88-7.77% and 6.39-7.00% efficiencies, respectively. We have demonstrated that furan and selenophene can be employed as building blocks of sensitizers in stable solar cells for the first time. We have also studied the influence of heteroatoms on photocurrents and photovoltages with the aid of quantum calculations and transient photoelectrical decay measurements. Temperature-dependent electrical impedance experiments have shown that a relatively low external quantum efficiency of the dye with biselenophene linker is not related to the charge collection yield in the case of an acetonitrile electrolyte.
Co-sensitization of porphyrin and metal-free dye for panchromatic dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Porphyrin dyes are outstanding photosensitizers. However, one of the limitations of using porphyrin dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) is their weak absorption in the 500–600 nm region. Co-sensitization approach with two complementary dyes is an approach to solve this problem. So, to enhance the DSSC performance by improving harvesting solar light, we have studied porphyrin dye (LD12) and an organic dye (D149) as the co-sensitizer. This co-sensitized LD12 + D149 device with complementary in their spectral responses shows the power conversion efficiency about 6.8%, which is higher compared with the individual LD12 and D149 solar cells. The obtained photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) by using this co-sensitized solar cell demonstrates a strong and broad spectral response. This improvement is due to increment of the dyes loading amounts, the fine-matched molecular structures and absorptions of both dyes as the co-sensitization system.Graphic abstractThe co-sensitized LD12 + D149-based DSSC with complementary in their spectral responses, increment of the dyes loading amounts and fine-matched molecular structures exhibited a significant enhancement in the short circuit current (Jsc) and finally the power conversion efficiency (6.8%) relative to the individual single-dye-based DSSC.

Abstract:Co-sensitization of two or more sensitizers with complementary absorption profiles had been utilized as an imperative tool to achieve panchromatic sensitization in dye-sensitized solar cells. The highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells consist of a co-sensitization system comprising of a mixture of porphyrin and organic dye. We have prepared four novel free-base and zinc porphyrins in minimum steps and examined their individual as well as co-sensitized performance in dye-sensitized solar cells. The UV-visible spectrum suggests that upon zinc insertion the absorption wavelength is red-shifted by 10 nm in both Soret and Q-band region. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the presence of an electron withdrawing cyanoacrylic acid as the anchoring group has pronounced effect on the charge distribution. IPCE spectra suggest that the co-sensitization of a free-base porphyrin with a zinc porphyrin resulted in panchromatic absorption in whole visible region. The device made with Mix-2, which is composed from the free-base porphyrin N4CN and the zinc porphyrin N4ZnCN gave the best performance with an overall photon-to-current conversion efficiency of 4.18%, with Jsc of 10.4 mA.cm -2 , Voc of 0.56 V and fill factor of 72%.

Abstract:Developing dyes with high open-circuit photovoltage (Voc) is a vital strategy to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of co-sensitized solar cells (co-DSSCs). Herein, three organic fluorine-containing dyes [YY-ThP(3F), YY-ThP(2F), and YY-ThP(26F)] are designed and synthesized for investigating the fluorine-induced effect on photophysical and photovoltaic performances. Consequently, this effect can significantly broaden the UV–vis absorption spectra of dyes but fail to improve the light-harvesting capability of DSSCs. Strikingly, YY-ThP(3F), featuring 3-position fluorine substitution to cyanoacrylic acid, yields a relatively high Voc compared to the corresponding fluorine-free dye (YY-ThP). Furthermore, the co-sensitization of YY-ThP+YY-ThP(3F) achieves a remarkably high PCE and long-term stability. This work implies that the combination of judicious molecular engineering and co-sensitization is a promising strategy for highly efficient and stable DSSCs.

Abstract:To fabricate highly efficient porphyrin dyes, we designed and synthesized two dyes with different numbers of fluorine atoms, dyes ZnF1 and ZnF2, respectively. These dyes were then connected to TiO2 electrode surface to build dye sensitized solar cells, and we studied the relationship between porphyrins dyes with different numbers of fluorine atoms and the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells. Our results indicate that solar cells with fewer fluorine atoms show higher photocurrent conversion efficiency (PCE). In particular, the ZnF1 solar cell containing one fluorine atom exhibits relatively high short-circuit current density ([Formula: see text] due to its low band gap and remarkable light collection capability. ZnF1 solar cells showed relatively higher short circuit current density ([Formula: see text] due to their low energy band gap and significant light collection ability. With the purpose to further improve the efficiencies, cosensitized with chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) dyes approaches were employed. As a result, the efficiencies have been successfully elevated to 2.71%. Additionally, the UV-vis absorption, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps are used to further verify the test results of the sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:A novel near-infrared (NIR) organic sensitizer FNE53 with a strong electron-withdrawing unit, dithieno[2,3-a:3',2'-c]phenazine, has been designed and synthesized for quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). By simply fusing the two thiophene rings on quinoxaline unit in sensitizer FNE48, the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) band bathochromically shifts from 542 nm for FNE48 to 629 nm for FNE53 in toluene solution. The absorption spectrum of sensitizer FNE53 covers the whole visible region and extends to the NIR region, which exhibits complementary absorption profile to another organic dye FNE46 based on quinoxaline. When FNE46 and FNE53 are used as cosensitizers for metal-free cocktail-type quasi-solid-state DSSCs, sensitizer FNE53 not only extends the photoresponse range but also suppresses the intermolecular interactions among the dye molecules. Therefore, the cocktail-type quasi-solid-state DSSC displays much higher IPCE value compared with that for the DSSC sensitizer based on FNE53 and a broader IPCE response in comparison to that for the DSSC sensitizers based on FNE46, respectively. After the molar ratio between the two cocktail dyes is optimized, the highest energy conversion efficiency of 8.04% is achieved in a metal-free quasi-solid-state DSSC cosensitized with FNE46 and FNE53, which exhibits good long-term stability after continuous light soaking for 1000 h.
Molecular Engineering of Quinoxaline-Based Organic Sensitizers for Highly Efficient and Stable Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A series of quinoxaline based metal-free organic sensitizers has been designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The absorption, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for all sensitizers have been systematically investigated. It is found that the incorporation of quinoxaline unit instead of thienopyrazine unit results in a negative shift of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels for FNE44, FNE45, FNE46, and FNE47, in comparison to FNE32, which induces a remarkable enhancement of the electron injection driving force from the excited organic sensitizers to the TiO2 semiconductor. Moreover, when the alkyl substituents are removed from the spacer part in FNE44 to the donor part in FNE45 and FNE46, a more conjugated system and a bathochromically shifted maximum absorption band can be realized, which consequently results in an increased light harvesting efficiency and photogenerated current. In addition, the length of the alkyl substituents on the donor part has a certain influence on the DSSC performance. Combining the three contributions, FNE46,based DSSC with liquid electrolyte displays the highest power conversion efficiency (eta) of 8.27%. Most importantly, a eta of 7.14% has been achieved for FNE46 based quasi-solid-state DSSC and remained at 100% of the initial value after continuous light soaking for 1000 h, which indicates that FNE46 is appropriate for promising commercial application. Our findings will facilitate the understanding of the crucial importance of molecular engineering and pave a new path to design novel metal-free organic dyes for highly efficient and stable DSSCs.
X-Shaped Organic Dyes with A Quinoxaline Bridge for Use in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Two novel X-shaped organic sensitizers (FNE48 and FNE49) with a quinoxaline bridge have been designed and synthesized. The structural difference between the two sensitizers is the number of anchoring groups. The relationship between the chemical structures and their optoelectronic properties has been systematically investigated. It is found that a broader and more intense charge transfer band is observed for sensitizer FNE48, with a single anchoring group, in comparison to sensitizer FNE49, which contains twin anchoring groups. Consequently, a high power conversion efficiency (eta) of 6.2% is achieved for a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) based on sensitizer FNE48 using a liquid electrolyte. Moreover, a eta of 5.2% is obtained for a quasi-solid-state DSSC based on sensitizer FNE48 and this remains at 100% of the initial value after continuous light irradiation for 1500 h.

Abstract:An electron-deficient group, 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline (DPQ), is incorporated as an auxiliary acceptor into the different positions of the porphyrin (Por) based donor-π bridge-acceptor (D-π-A) dye (FNE57) to construct D-A′-Por-π-A (FNE58) and D-Por-A′-π-A (FNE59) configurations. The incorporation of DPQ unit between the donor and porphyrin unit has negligible influence on the absorption property, whereas the DPQ unit located between the porphyrin unit and acceptor significantly increases the absorbance for the Soret band and the valley between the Soret and Q bands. Theoretical calculation reveals that incorporating the DPQ unit adjacent to the acceptor is more advantageous to delocalize the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and enhance the electronic asymmetry, which facilitates the intramolecular charge transfer. The effect of DPQ unit and its linkage position on the performance of related quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is systematically investigated. The quasi-solid-state DSSC with sensitizer FNE59 displays a power conversion efficiency of 6.02%, which is 23% and 51% higher than those for FNE57 and FNE58 based DSSCs. Our studies facilitate the understanding of the crucial importance of molecular engineering and pave a new path to design novel porphyrin based sensitizers for highly efficient DSSCs.

Abstract:Co-sensitization is an attractive approach to enhance the light-harvesting efficiency of a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC), whereby two or more dyes having complementary absorption spectra are co-adsorbed within a DSSC. A new method of co-sensitizing simultaneously pyridyl- and carboxylic acid-based dyes was performed and proved to be a successful approach for increasing the photoconversion efficiency (PCE%) of a DSSC. Yellow and red pyridyl-based dyes (T181 and T202) were co-sensitized with a blue carboxylic acid-based dye (Dyenamo Blue, DB). The co-sensitized DSSCs showed profound performance enhancements with a cobalt tris(bipyridine) electrolyte system. Increases in the total cell efficiency of 45% and 16% were seen in the co-sensitized T181-DB and T202-DB cells when compared to the single dye-sensitized DB cell, respectively. Remarkable increases in photocurrent (J sc) and photovoltage (V oc) were seen in both co-sensitized cells. The higher V oc values were mainly due to the decrease in the electron recombination processes at the TiO2/cobalt electrolyte interface. The increase in dye coverage in the co-sensitized cells resulted in a blocking behavior at the TiO2/electrolyte interface and had positive effects on electron lifetime. In addition the higher J sc values were associated with the complementary absorption responses of T181 and T202 with DB as mirrored in the IPCE% spectra.

Abstract:Thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione-based organic sensitizers with triphenylamine (FNE38 and FNE40) or julolidine (FNE39 and FNE41) as electron-donating unit have been designed and synthesized. A linear hexyl group or a branched alkyl chain, the 2-ethylhexyl group, is incorporated into molecular skeleton of the dyes to minimize intermolecular interactions. The absorption, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for these sensitizers were then systematically investigated. It is found that the sensitizers have similar photophysical and electrochemical properties, such as absorption spectra and energy levels, owing to their close chemical structures. However, the quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on the two types of sensitizers exhibit very different performance parameters. Upon the incorporation of the short ethyl group on the hexyl moiety, enhancements in both open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) and short-circuit current (J(sc)) are achieved for the quasi-solid-state DSSCs. The V(oc) gains originating from the suppression of charge recombination were quantitatively investigated and are in good agreement with the experimentally observed V(oc) enhancements. Therefore, an enhanced solar energy conversion efficiency (η) of 6.16%, constituting an increase by 23%, is achieved under standard AM 1.5 sunlight without the use of coadsorbant agents for the quasi-solid-state DSSC based on sensitizer FNE40, which bears the branched alkyl group, in comparison with that based on FNE38 carrying the linear alkyl group. This work presents a design concept for considering the crucial importance of the branched alkyl substituent in novel metal-free organic sensitizers.
Optoelectronic performance and co-sensitized excited states characteristics of organic dyes with naphthobisthiadiazole and benzothiadiazole

Abstract:Photosensitizer systems play a crucial role in light absorption and charge transfer processes. Designing and selecting dye molecules with exceptional photoelectric features remains a significant scientific challenge in the realm of solar cell research. The paper explores the photovoltaic properties of two D-A'-π-A dyes (CS-70 and CS-72) both individually and after co-sensitization with chlorophyll derivatives, utilizing density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. The monomeric dye molecules share the same donor and conjugated bridge but differ in their auxiliary receptors (benzothiadiazole and naphthobisthiadiazole). Firstly, the study investigates the impact of various auxiliary acceptors on the properties of the dye molecules by analyzing their geometrical structure, frontier molecular orbitals, spectral properties, chemical reaction parameters, intramolecular charge transfer, electron injection, density of projected states, and dye regeneration. A detailed explanation for the superior performance of CS-72 is provided. Furthermore, a solar cell evaluation model was developed for the short circuit current density ( Jsc ), open circuit voltage ( Voc ), and photoelectric conversion efficiency ( PCE ) of the single dye molecule. Subsequently, simulations of the co-sensitized molecules with chlorophyll are performed, focusing on structure, excited state properties and charge transfer, suggesting that co-sensitization enhances spectral properties, light-trapping, and regeneration abilities, and long-range charge transfer between the dye molecules and chlorophyll can be found. The results also demonstrate that the Jsc of the co-sensitized molecules were improved, which facilitates the realization of a higher PCE . This study provides theoretical support for the potential of co-sensitizing dye molecules with chlorophyll to enhance solar cell efficiency, offering valuable insights for the future development of green, cost-effective, and efficient solar cells.

Effect of small-size co-sensitizer on acid-base co-sensitization system of dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Inhibition of electron recombination and dye aggregation is a crucial strategy to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of co-sensitized solar cells. Here, large-size organic dyes TA , TP containing triphenylamine donor, cyanoacetic acid and pyridine acceptor are prepared. Different molar ratios are used to explore the optimal acid-base co-sensitization systems, different concentrations of small-size co-sensitizer (coded EA ) are added to the optimal acid-base co-sensitization system non-competitive adsorption, and the effect of EA on acid-base co-sensitization system was studied. The results show that the addition of EA greatly improves the molar absorbance of dye molecules, and the introduction of oxyalkyl chains in the triphenylamine donor effectively inhibits the interfacial charge recombination and dye aggregation, so that the short-circuit current density ( J sc ) of ternary co-sensitization system increased from 10.81 mA cm –2 to 13.70 mA cm –2 . At the same time, PCE based on (3:2)@EA(100%) devices improved by 30.61% (from 4.9% to 6.4%). The electron-rich EDOT of EA fills the adsorption gap of acid-base dye on the TiO 2 surface, increases the overall dye load and photogenerated electron density, and thus increases the open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) and J sc of the devices. This ternary co-sensitization provides more options for improving the PCE of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
