Abstract:An exact and complete solution of the problem of a half-plane crack in an infinite transversely isotropic piezoelectric body is presented. The upper and lower crack faces are assumed to be loaded antisymmetrically by a couple of tangential point forces in opposite directions. The solution is derived through a limiting procedure from that of a penny-shaped crack. The expressions for the electroelastic field are given in terms of elementary functions. Finally, the numerical results of the second and third mode stress intensity factors k(2) and k(3) of piezoelectric materials and elastic materials are compared in figures.

Abstract:In this study, Fabrikant (1989, 1991)'s new results in potential theory were used to obtain the exact and complete solution for the problem of a penny-shaped crack in an infinite transversely isotropic piezoelectric body subjected to antisymmetric point loads (point charges and normal point forces); then the complete solution for the problem of one-sided loading of a penny-shaped crack was obtained by the superposition of the symmetric loading solution in Chen and Shioya (1999) and the antisymmetric one presented here; and then the reciprocity theorem of piezoelectric media was used to deal with the problem of interaction between arbitrarily located point forces and a point charge with a penny-shaped crack and obtained the exact expressions of the crack faces' normal displacement in terms of elementary functions and some non-singular integrals; and finally obtained the normal displacement of the positive and negative faces of the crack under many loading cases as shown in figures for an infinite PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic body weakened by a penny-shaped crack.

Abstract:The semi-elliptical surface crack growth of structural components with uncertain material resistance under random loading is studied by using the stochastic averaging principle. The FPK equation governing the transition probability density function of crack lengths is derived. The analytical solution of the FPK equation for the case of that the equations for the crack growth in the surface and depth directions are uncoupled is obtained. The effects of the parameters of the stress process and of the material property on the behavior of semi-elliptical fatigue crack growth of the components with deterministic resistance to crack growth in the stationary Gaussian stress process are examined. The comparison of the analytical result with digital simulation shows the effectiveness of the present method. ? 1995 HUST.

Abstract:The problem of a penny-shaped crack subjected to anti-symmetric uniform heat flux in an infinite transversely isotropic magneto-electro-thermo-elastic medium is investigated. Although we start our derivations in magneto-electro-thermo-elastic medium, the solution presented in this paper is also applicable for linear transversely isotropic thermopiezoelectric, thermopiezomagnetic, thermoelastic materials. Previous researchers obtained the closed-form solution to the similar problem in crack plane. In regards to full-space solution, they expressed it in multiple integration or line integrals involving Bessel functions. In this article, the authors find that the full-space solution could be in terms of the explicit elementary functions via potential theory method developed by Fabrikant. What's more, the closed form solutions in all kinds of linear transversely isotropic medium can serve as benchmarks for future numerical studies of multiphase composites.

Abstract:This paper aims to analytically study the three-dimensional steady-state thermo-elastic field in an infinite space containing a penny-shaped crack subjected to a set of temperature loadings. The material is assumed to be isotropic and the loadings are symmetrically applied on the crack surfaces. In view of the symmetry with respect to the cracked plane, the present crack problem is formulated as a mixed boundary-value problem. The corresponding boundary integral and integro-differential equations are solved by virtue of the potential theory method in conjunction with the newly developed general solution. For the crack subjected to point or uniform temperature loadings, the thermo-elastic field variables are explicitly and exactly obtained in terms of elementary functions, in a complete manner. In both non-axisymmetric and axisymmetric cases, some important parameters in fracture mechanics, e.g., the crack surface displacement, the normal stress in the intact subregion of the crack plane and the stress intensity factor are explicitly derived as well. The validity of the present solutions is discussed analytically and by virtue of finite element simulation. The obtained analytical results can be combined with experimental investigations by the infrared-thermography technique. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This work treats the case of a Dugdale–Barenblatt crack within an infinite strip through the resolution of a hyper singular integral equation. The crack is perpendicular to the strip boundaries and located at its center. The solution approach is based on second order Chebyshev polynomials and requires meticulous treatment of the jump discontinuities within the loading distribution along the crack faces. The relationship between the width of the strip and the length of the cohesive zone has been established. The variation in applied load with the increase in crack length, considering different ratios of the initial crack length to the strip width is illustrated. Furthermore, the crack propagation is simulated. Validation of our approach is achieved through comparison with both the infinite medium case and the work of H. Tada et al. "The Stress Analysis of Cracks Handbook, Del Research Corporation, Hellertown, Pennsylvania. 1973" .

Due to the interaction between the crack and the free surface, the crack tip fields are generally of I-II mixed mode. The solutions for two typical configurations, a Griffith crack and a circular crack beneath the free surface of a semi-infinite solid, are derived.

Abstract:The article contains the solution of a semi-infinite crack present at the interface of two dissimilar orthotropic strips sandwiched between dissimilar orthotropic strips. The crack is moving with a constant velocity, and the surface is under shear wave disturbance. Using the Fourier integral transform, the standard form for the Wiener–Hopf (W–H) equation is obtained for the proposed mathematical model, which is solved using the W–H method. The approximate analytic expressions for stress intensity factor, normalised stress intensity factor (NSIF) and the crack energy have been obtained for the considered crack problem. The behaviour of NSIF and normalised crack energy has been graphically presented for different crack propagation velocities and various ratios of depths of the strips of the composite material for different particular cases. The novelty of the article lies in finding the approximate analytic solutions of the proposed mathematical model using the W–H method, finding the expression for the length of the contact region near the crack tip and the pictorial presentations of the impact of exterior strips on the two dissimilar bonded strips containing the crack through finding the stress magnification factor.

Abstract:In this paper,element-free Galerkin method is adopted.The transmission rules are used to solve the problem of crack discontinuance.J-integral method and the contour integral method are employed in calculating stress intensity factors individually.As a result,the displacement and stress fields of the finit plates with single edge cracks and single inclined edge crack as well as the crack tip stress intensity factors have been successfully derived,and also,the track of crack propagation has been realized.

Abstract:The dynamic propagation problem of semi-infinite mode Ⅲ crack in an orthotropic infinite body is investigated. The stresses and displacements near the crack tip are expressed as analytical complex functions, which can be represented in power series. The constant coefficients of the series are determined with boundary conditions. Simple approximate expressions for the stresses and displacements near the crack tip are developed. The expressions can be degenerated for static problems in isotropic materials. Finally, the crack propagation characteristics are represented with the mechanical properties of the orthotropic material and crack speeds. The faster the crack velocity, the greater the maximum values of the stresses and displacements near the crack tip.

Abstract:This paper examines the problem of a penny-shaped crack in a thermoporoelastic body. On the basis of the recently developed general solutions for thermoporoelasticity, appropriate potentials are suggested and the governing equations are solved in view of the similarity to those for pure elasticity. Exact and closed form fundamental solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. The singularity behavior is then discussed. The present solutions are compared with those in literature and an excellent agreement is achieved. Numerical calculations are performed to show the influence of the material parameters upon the distribution of the thermoporoelastic field. Due to its ideal property, the present solution is a natural benchmark to various numerical codes and simplified analyses.

Abstract:The present paper provides an analytical solution for a periodic array of two collinear and symmetric cracks (P-TCSC) under remote tension. This is achieved by representing the multiple collinear cracks problem as the contact problem with discrete ligament regions, and the governing equations are obtained as integral equations with Cauchy-type kernel. Closed-form expressions are derived for the crack opening profile, normal stress distribution and mode I stress intensity factors (SIFs), which can reduce to the classical solutions of two collinear and symmetric cracks (TCSC) or a periodic row of collinear cracks with equal length and equal spacing (PCEE) under special conditions. Finite element analysis is also performed to validate the analytical solutions obtained. Different from the TCSC case, results show that crack initiation for P-TCSC seems more complicated depending on a combination of two nondimensional parameters, and a SIFs map for P-TCSC is further constructed to give a more precise evaluation. The proposed method relies solely on solving the integral equations with Cauchy-type kernel combined with the corresponding boundary conditions without a prior knowledge of the complex potential function in traditional complex variable method of plane elasticity, and it may find application in plastic zone evaluation and fracture criteria of collinear cracks.

Abstract:This study deals with the propagation of a semi-infinite crack influenced by SH-wave propagation in an initially stressed dry sandy (ISDS) strip. The Fourier integral transforms (FIT) and Wiener–Hopf (WH) approach are used to solve the model analytically. For the cases of concentrated force of constant intensity (CF) and constant load (CL), the stress intensity factor (SIF) is calculated. The effects of sandiness, crack speed/length, and initial stress on the SIF in ISDS strip are numerically elucidated and graphically demonstrated. Comparison of the SIF analysed for differently configured strips influenced by distinct cases of initial stresses is one of the novel features of this study.

Abstract:Recent molecular dynamics simulations of dynamic crack propagation have shown that a shear crack propagating at a sub-Rayleigh speed may have a finite crack opening, but the crack opening vanishes once the crack tip velocity exceeds the shear wave speed. This observation is at odds with classical linear elastic solutions which indicate that a pure shear crack should have zero opening. To understand this discrepancy, we develop in this paper a finite deformation continuum theory incorporating the linear harmonic potential to describe the deformation of a crack in a solid with triangular lattice structure. Using the asymptotic method of Knowles [Eng. Fract. Mech. 15 (1981) 469], we show that there is indeed a finite crack opening for a dynamic, sub-Rayleigh shear crack. This opening is on the order of the lattice constant, and is attributable to the geometric nonlinearity of finite deformation near the crack tip. We also show in another paper that, once the crack tip velocity exceeds the shear wave speed, Knowles’ asymptotic method gives a vanishing crack opening. These conclusions based on the continuum analysis for sub-Rayleigh and super-shear cracks agree well with the molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:A static, semi-infinite plane problem with an internal oblique crack, in which surfaces are subject to continuous distributed forces, was discussed. The research was based on the principle of fracture mechanics, complex variable function method and the generalized Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problem theory. By means of the model coupling method proposed, the original problem can be transformed into the superposition of an infinite plane problem with a single finite length crack and a semi-infinite plane problem without any crack. By comparison with the results in the literatures,this method manifests some merits, such as high accuracy and easy realization, etc. Finally, the semi-analytical solution of the internal crack problem and the stress intensity factor at the crack tips are provided.

Abstract:The solution of a Volterra type screw dislocation problem in an orthotropic rectangular plane with finite length and width and various boundary conditions is obtained by means of a separation of variables technique. A distributed dislocation method is employed to obtain integral equations of the plane with cracks and cavities under an anti-plane traction. The ensuing equations are of the Cauchy singular type and have been solved numerically. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed solution.

Abstract:The plane strain problems of semi-infinite cracks in an infinite functionally graded orthotropic material are studied. Two uniform impact loading modes are considered, i.e. opening and in-plane shear. Laplace and Fourier transforms along with the Winner–Hopf technique are employed to solve the displacement formulation of the equations of motion. Closed-form solutions of the dynamic stress intensity factors are obtained. It is observed that the stress intensity factors are not all proportional to the square root of time as expected. The results can be reduced to the known solutions derived independently for orthotropic or isotropic materials.

Abstract:We model and derive the solution for the problem of a Mode I semi-infinite crack propagating in a discrete triangular lattice with bonds having a contrast in stiffness in the principal lattice directions. The corresponding Green's kernel is found and from this wave dispersion dependencies are obtained in explicit form. An equation of the Wiener-Hopf type is also derived and solved along the crack face, in order to compute the stress intensity factor for the semi-infinite crack. The crack stability is analysed via the evaluation of the energy release rate for different contrasts in stiffness of the bonds.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. This paper contains the solution to the problem of a semi-infinite moving crack situated in an orthotropic strip bonded between two identical strips. The crack moves with a constant velocity, and the surface is under shear wave disturbance. We first examine the equations of elasticity, which include equilibrium equations and stress and displacement constitutive relations with the model-specific continuity and boundary conditions. Using the Fourier integral transform, the standard form for the Wiener–Hopf (W-H) equation is obtained, which is solved using the W-H method. The analytical expressions for the considered crack problem have been obtained for stress intensity factor (SIF), normalized stress intensity factor (NSIF), and stress magnification factor (SMF). The behavior of NSIF has been graphically presented for particular cases of composite materials for different crack propagation velocities and various depth ratios of the strips. The novelty of this paper lies in the analytic solutions using the W-H method for the semi-infinite moving crack problem under the influence of anti-plane shear waves. The pictorial presentations of normalized SIF clearly show their dependency on strip depths, crack propagation velocities and elastic constants.
