Abstract:We present a spectral-theoretic approach to time-average statistical mechanics for general, non-equilibrium initial conditions. We consider the statistics of bounded, local additive functionals of reversible as well as irreversible ergodic stochastic dynamics with continuous or discrete state-space. We derive exact results for the mean, fluctuations and correlations of time average observables from the eigenspectrum of the underlying generator of Fokker-Planck or master equation dynamics, and discuss the results from a physical perspective. Feynman-Kac formulas are re-derived using Itô calculus and combined with non-Hermitian perturbation theory. The emergence of the universal central limit law in a spectral representation is shown explicitly on large deviation time-scales. For reversible dynamics with equilibrated initial conditions we derive a general upper bound to fluctuations of occupation measures in terms of an integral of the return probability. Simple, exactly solvable examples are analyzed to demonstrate how to apply the theory. As a biophysical example we revisit the Berg-Purcell problem on the precision of concentration measurements by a single receptor. Our results are directly applicable to a diverse range of phenomena underpinned by time-average observables and additive functionals in physical, chemical, biological, and economical systems.

Abstract:We develop a quenched thermodynamic formalism for open random dynamical systems generated by finitely branched, piecewise-monotone mappings of the interval. The openness refers to the presence of holes in the interval, which terminate trajectories once they enter. Our random driving is generated by an invertible, ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a probability space $(\Omega,\mathscr{F},m)$. For each $\omega$ we associate a piecewise-monotone, surjective map $T_\omega$ and a hole $H_\omega\subset [0,1]$; the map and the hole generate the corresponding open transfer operator. In the first chapter we prove, for a contracting potential, that there exists a unique random conformal measure $\nu_\omega$ supported on the survivor set. We also prove the existence of a unique random invariant density $\phi_\omega$. These provide an ergodic random invariant measure $\mu=\nu \phi$ supported on the global survivor set. Further, we prove quasi-compactness of the transfer operator cocycle and exponential decay of correlations for $\mu$. The escape rate of $\nu$ is given by the difference of the expected pressures for the closed and open random systems. Finally, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the surviving set is equal to the unique zero of the expected pressure function for almost every fiber. In the second chapter we consider quasi-compact linear operator cocycles and their small perturbations. We prove an abstract fiberwise first-order formula for the leading Lyapunov multipliers. Our new machinery is deployed to create a spectral approach for a quenched extreme value theory that considers random dynamics and random observations. Finally, we prove quenched statistical limit theorems for random equilibrium states arising from contracting potentials. We illustrate the above theory with a variety of examples.

Transition to anomalous dynamics in a simple random map

Abstract:The famous Bernoulli shift (or dyadic transformation) is perhaps the simplest deterministic dynamical system exhibiting chaotic dynamics. It is a piecewise linear time-discrete map on the unit interval with a uniform slope larger than one, hence expanding, with a positive Lyapunov exponent and a uniform invariant density. If the slope is less than one the map becomes contracting, the Lyapunov exponent is negative, and the density trivially collapses onto a fixed point. Sampling from these two different types of maps at each time step by randomly selecting the expanding one with probability $p$, and the contracting one with probability $1-p$, gives a prototype of a random dynamical system. Here we calculate the invariant density of this simple random map, as well as its position autocorrelation function, analytically and numerically under variation of $p$. We find that the map exhibits a non-trivial transition from fully chaotic to completely regular dynamics by generating a long-time anomalous dynamics at a critical sampling probability $p_c$, defined by a zero Lyapunov exponent. This anomalous dynamics is characterised by an infinite invariant density, weak ergodicity breaking and power law correlation decay.

Abstract:The established thermodynamic formalism of chaotic dynamics, valid at statistical equilibrium, is here generalized to systems out of equilibrium, that have yet to relax to a steady state. A relation between information, escape rate, and the phase-space average of an integrated observable (e.g. Lyapunov exponent, diffusion coefficient) is obtained for finite time. Most notably, the thermodynamic treatment may predict the phase-space profile of any finite-time integrated observable from the leading and subleading eigenfunctions of the Perron-Frobenius/Koopman transfer operator. Examples of that equivalence are shown, and the theory is tested analytically on the Bernoulli map, while numerically on the perturbed cat map, the Hénon map, and the Ikeda map, all paradigms of chaos.

A Note on the Uniform Ergodicity of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:We study the uniform ergodicity property for non-invertible topological and measure-preserving dynamical systems. It is shown that for topological dynamical systems uniform ergodicity is equivalent to eventually periodicity and that for measure preserving systems it is equivalent to periodicity. To obtain our results, we prove a result on the long-term behavior of lattice homomorphisms that have $1$ isolated in its spectrum.

On ergodic properties of stochastic PDEs

Abstract:In this note we review several situations in which stochastic PDEs exhibit ergodic properties. We begin with the basic dissipative conditions, as stated by Da Prato and Zabczyk in their classical monograph. Then we describe the singular case of SPDEs with reflection. Next we move to some degenerate (and thus more demanding) settings. Namely we recall some results obtained around 2006, concerning stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with a very degenerate noise. We finish the article by handling some cases with degenerate coefficients. This includes a new result about the parabolic Anderson model in dimension $d\ge 3$, driven by a general class of noises and fairly general initial conditions. In this context, a phase transition is observed, expressed in terms of the noise intensity.

Abstract:By examining the deterministic limit of a general ε-dependent generator for Markovian dynamics, which includes the continuous Fokker-Planck equations and discrete chemical master equations as two special cases, the intrinsic connections among mesoscopic stochastic dynamics, deterministic ordinary differential equations or partial differential equations, large deviation rate functions, and macroscopic thermodynamic potentials are established. Our result not only solves the long-lasting question of the origin of the entropy function in classical irreversible thermodynamics, but also reveals an emergent feature that arises automatically during the deterministic limit, through its large deviation rate function, with both time-reversible dynamics equipped with a Hamiltonian function and time-irreversible dynamics equipped with an entropy function.

Abstract:In this paper we study random walks on dynamical random environments in $1 + 1$ dimensions. Assuming that the environment is invariant under space-time shifts and fulfills a mild mixing hypothesis, we establish a law of large numbers and a concentration inequality around the asymptotic speed. The mixing hypothesis imposes a polynomial decay rate of covariances on the environment with sufficiently high exponent but does not impose uniform mixing. Examples of environments for which our methods apply include the contact process and Markovian environments with a positive spectral gap, such as the East model. For the East model we also obtain that the distinguished zero satisfies a Law of Large Numbers with strictly positive speed.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider random dynamical systems formed by concatenating maps acting on the unit interval in an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) fashion. Considered as a stationary Markov process, the random dynamical system possesses a unique stationary measure . We consider a class of non-square-integrable observables , mostly of form , where is a non-recurrent point (in particular a non-periodic point) satisfying some other genericity conditions and, more generally, regularly varying observables with index . The two types of maps we concatenate are a class of piecewise expanding maps and a class of intermittent maps possessing an indifferent fixed point at the origin. Under conditions on the dynamics and , we establish Poisson limit laws, convergence of scaled Birkhoff sums to a stable limit law, and functional stable limit laws in both the annealed and quenched case. The scaling constants for the limit laws for almost every quenched realization are the same as those of the annealed case and determined by . This is in contrast to the scalings in quenched central limit theorems where the centering constants depend in a critical way upon the realization and are not the same for almost every realization.

Abstract:We study statistical properties of a family of maps acting in the space of integer valued sequences, which model dynamics of simple deterministic traffic flows. We obtain asymptotic (as time goes to infinity) properties of trajectories of those maps corresponding to arbitrary initial configurations in terms of statistics of densities of various patterns and describe weak attractors of these systems and the rate of convergence to them. Previously only the so called regular initial configurations (having a density with only finite fluctuations of partial sums around it) in the case of a slow particles model (with the maximal velocity 1) have been studied rigorously. Applying ideas borrowed from substitution dynamics we are able to reduce the analysis of the traffic flow models corresponding to the multi-lane traffic and to the flow with fast particles (with velocities greater than 1) to the simplest case of the flow with the one-lane traffic and slow particles, where the crucial technical step is the derivation of the exact life-time for a given cluster of particles. Applications to the optimal redirection of the multi-lane traffic flow are discussed as well.

Abstract:We study a general class of random walks driven by a uniquely ergodic Markovian environment. Under a coupling condition on the environment we obtain strong ergodicity properties for the environment as seen from the position of the walker, that is, the environment process. We can transfer the rate of mixing in time of the environment to the rate of mixing of the environment process with a loss of at most polynomial order. Therefore the method is applicable to environments with sufficiently fast polynomial mixing. We obtain unique ergodicity of the environment process. Moreover, the unique invariant measure of the environment process depends continuously on the jump rates of the walker. As a consequence we obtain the law of large numbers and a central limit theorem with nondegenerate variance for the position of the walk.

Abstract:The accurate characterization of dynamics in an experimental time series is fundamental for understanding the observed behavior of any natural or arti cial system. While numerous methods are available for this task [1], their accuracy more or less depends on the availability of long data sets. This requirement often hinders productive research from experimental data, especially in elds where acquisition of long data sets is impossible due to intrinsic system properties or lack of non-invasive recording techniques that destroy the system's dynamics. Such instances are frequent in biology, especially at the cellular level [2], and can also be encountered in economics [3], astronomy [4], as well as man-made systems in general. Here we propose a new approach for analyzing short time series based on ergodicity of deterministic chaotic systems [5]. Abstract:An overview is given of recent advances in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics about the statistics of random paths and current fluctuations. Although statistics is carried out in space for equilibrium statistical mechanics, statistics is considered in time or spacetime for nonequilibrium systems. In this approach, relationships have been established between nonequilibrium properties such as the transport coefficients, the thermodynamic entropy production, or the affinities, and quantities characterizing the microscopic Hamiltonian dynamics and the chaos or fluctuations it may generate. This overview presents results for classical systems in the escape-rate formalism, stochastic processes, and open quantum systems.

Abstract:We utilize an ergodic theory framework to explore sublinear expectation theory. Specifically, we investigate the pointwise Birkhoff's ergodic theorem for invariant sublinear expectation systems. By further assuming that these sublinear expectation systems are ergodic, we derive stronger results. Furthermore, we relax the conditions for the law of large numbers and the strong law of large numbers under sublinear expectations from independent and identical distribution to $\alpha$-mixing. These results can be applied to a class of stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion (i.e., $G$-SDEs), such as $G$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. As byproducts, we also obtain a series of applications for classical ergodic theory and capacity theory.
