Abstract:We aim to verify the equivalence between the paper and electronic version of Chinese SF-36 administered using the Quality-of-Life-Recorder. A crossover trial of the electronic and paper versions of the Chinese SF-36 was performed as follows: the interviewees were asked to fill out either an electronic version or a paper version firstly according to their own willingness. After at least 30 min interval, interviewees were required to complete the other version. This study used a convenience sample of medical college freshman participating in courses at the College of Medicine of Zhejiang University (China). About 100 subjects were eventually recruited and the response rate was 90.9%. The mean difference of completion time between the two versions was caused by an impact of order sequence and advantages of the electronic version over the paper version were eventually verified. At both the level of eight subscales and the level of 36 items, score equivalence was achieved between two versions. Thereby this study provided an empirical basis for the identification of the equivalence between the paper version and electronic version of the Chinese SF-36 and can be regarded as a pilot towards further investigations on how to facilitate widespread deployment of the Quality-of-Life-Recorder in Asian populations.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To develop and evaluate scaling and scoring assumptions, and the reliability and the validity of a Chinese version of the SF-36 scales.METHODS:A multi-stage mixed sampling procedure was used to select a representative sample of the general population. The sample size was 1 000 households. All family members of a selected household, aged 18 and older, completed a survey by self-administration. Formal psychometric methods for testing assumptions underlying item scoring and scale construction were used according to the standard procedure of the IQOLA Project.RESULTS:Of the 1 985 collected questionnaires, 1 972 were qualified. Of them, 1 688 (85.6%) were respondents. 1 316 respondents answered all 36 items, while the remaining (372 respondents) answered with one or several missing responses. Among the non-respondents, 65.5% were illiteracy or quasi-illiteracy. The assumption of equal intervals was violated for the VT and MH scales. The recoded item values were used to calculate scale scores. The clustering and ordering of the item means were approximately the same as that of the source version and other two Chinese versions. The items in each scale had similar standard deviations except those in the PF, BP, SF scales. The correlations between an item and its hypothesized scale were identical for all except the SF and VT scales. The scaling success rates of convergent validity were 0% for the SF scale, 75% for the VT scale, and 100% for the other six scales. The scaling success rates of discriminat validity ranged from 87.5% to 100% for all scales except for the SF scale. The Cronbach' alpha coefficients of internal consistency reliability ranged from 0.72 to 0.88, which were satisfactory for group comparison except 0.39 for the SF scale and 0.66 for the VT scale. The two-weeks test-retest reliability coefficient ranged from 0.66 to 0.94. Factor analysis identified two principal components: a "physical" factor and a "mental" factor. Taken together, these two factors could be used to explain 56.3% of the total variance.CONCLUSION:The Chinese version of the SF-36 Health Survey Scale has achieved conceptual equivalence and satisfied the psychometric scaling assumptions well enough to warrant wide use in China. Known-groups validity will give more meaningful evidences of the validity of the Chinese SF-36 scales.
[Reliability and Validity of a Short-Form Health Survey Scale (SF-36), Chinese Version Used in an Elderly Population of Zhejiang Province in China].

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo evaluate the validity and reliability of a Chinese version on the Short-Form Health Survey Scale (SF-36) among elderly population.METHODSQuestionnaire including SF-36 Chinese version was administered in a cross-sectional study from October to December 2007. 4241 elderly people over 60 years old from rural and urban area in Zhejiang province were face-to-face interviewed by well-trained investigators, and then analyses on correlation, reliability, factors, t-test and one-way ANOVA were made to evaluate on reliability and validity of the scale.RESULTSThe SF-36 Chinese version had good split-half reliability (r = 0.91, P < 0.001) and all the internal consistency Cronbach's alpha coefficients exceeded 0.8 except for VT (alpha = 0.65), SF (alpha = 0.65) and MH (alpha = 0.40). The correlative coefficients between each item and its domain were all greater than the 0.4 thresholds except item 9 - 2, and they were greater than the correlation between the item and other domains for all but item 9 - 8. These results demonstrated that the SF-36 Chinese version had good convergent validity and discriminant validity. The distribution of 35 items in 6 public factors (the cumulative variance = 67.04%) extracted from them was consistent with the basic conceived concept. All domains except MH had good validity to discriminate different categories.CONCLUSIONThe SF-36 Chinese version had good reliability and validity. It was acceptable for the evaluation on quality of life in elderly population, but the reliability and validity of MH were relative low and the items such as 9 - 2, 9 - 8 in MH and 3 - 1 in PF were not suitable for Chinese elderly population.

Abstract:Background: The Burn Specific Health Scale (BSHS) is designed to measure burn-specific, health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the abbreviated BSHS (BSHS-A).Methods: The English version of the BSHS-A was translated into Chinese using a standardised procedure. The participants were 457 patients classified into three severity groups (mild, moderate and severe). All patients completed the Chinese BSHS-A questionnaire, the Short Form-36 (SF-36) and the EuroQol 5-Dimensions (EQ-5D). To evaluate clinical utility of the BSHS-A, we used Cronbach's alpha (internal consistency), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs; test-retest reliability) and construct validity (using the SF-36 and EQ-5D).Results: Cronbach's alpha for all subscales was >0.80, demonstrating high internal consistency of the BSHS-A (Chinese version). The ICC was >0.70 for each patient group. Strong correlations were observed between the BSHS-A and SF-36 and EQ-5D scales. Neither floor nor ceiling effects were found.Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the BSHS-A (Chinese version) has good psychometric properties, showing suitable internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The BSHS-A may, thus, be useful for assessing HRQoL in Chinese burn victims. However, adaptations may be required to reduce its length. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd and ISBI. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To translate, cross-culturally adapt and preliminarily test the Simplified Chinese version of SF-6Dv2 among the Chinese general population. The translation followed the international guidelines. Face-to-face cognitive debriefing was carried out in a small sample of the Chinese general population, using both think-aloud and retrospective probing methods. Preliminary psychometric properties (including acceptability, ceiling/floor effect and known-group validity) were investigated using a cross-sectional survey which was conducted in a representative sample of the general population in Tianjin, China. Translation was conducted by forward- and back-translation, followed by harmonization and expert review. Two minor modifications were made during cognitive debriefing. Five hundred and nine respondents (54.4% males, aged 18–86 years) participated in the psychometric testing survey. The mean (standard deviation) duration of finishing SF-6Dv2 was 96.9 s (58.5 s). No respondents claimed difficulties on understanding/answering, and no ceiling/floor effect was found in the total summary score. Known-group validity verified that the questionnaire was able to distinguish between subgroups in terms of whether having chronic conditions. The Simplified Chinese version of SF-6Dv2 is demonstrated to be conceptually equivalent with the original English version, which is also understandable and easy to finish among the Chinese general population.
Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of simplified Chinese version of the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire.

Abstract:Study Design. The Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) was translated and then adapted and validated. Objective. Translation of the RMDQ into simplified Chinese characters (SCRMDQ), and its cross-cultural adaptation and validation in patients with low back pain with or without radicular leg pain. Summary of Background Data. The RMDQ is used worldwide and versions in traditional Chinese characters are available in Hong Kong and Taiwan. But there is no version in simplified Chinese characters for use in Mainland China. Methods. The original version of the RMDQ was translated and back-translated, and then cross-cultural adaptation of the simplified Chinese version was performed following published guidelines. The SCRMDQ was validated in 150 patients, 30 of whom finished the prefinal SCRMDQ and helped determine the final version. The remaining 120 patients were asked to complete the final SCRMDQ, simplified Chinese Oswestry Disability Index (SCODI), and visual analogue scale. Reliability was assessed with the final version using internal consistency by the Cronbach alpha coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient; structural validity was evaluated by correspondence analysis. Then comparison of SCRMDQ and SCODI was performed. Results. A total of 116 patients in the final validation study finished the questionnaires completely. Their mean age was 52.17 +/- 11.95 years (range, 22-78 yr) and the mean low back pain duration was 42.04 +/- 60.94 months (range, 2-480 mo). The average time taken was 4.11 +/- 1.48 minutes (range, 2-9 min) on SCRMDQ and 7.37 +/- 3.98 minutes (range, 3-30 min) on SCODI. The mean SCRMDQ, SCODI, and visual analogue scale scores were 14.07 +/- 4.79 (range, 2-24), 23.98 +/- 10.38 (range, 2-47), and 57.17 +/- 20.72 (range, 0-95), respectively. In the final test, the Cronbach a for internal consistency was 0.826 and intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.947; both showed adequate acceptance. Positive and statistically significant correlations were found between SCRMDQ and SCODI (r = 0.791, P < 0.01) and visual analogue scale (r = 0.493, P < 0.01), indicating sufficient structural validation. Most patients preferred SCRMDQ to SCODI, because it was simpler to understand and easier to finish. Conclusion. The SCRMDQ was reliable and valid as a low back pain measurement tool in patients with or without radicular leg pain in Mainland China. The further use and research with the questionnaire were recommended.

Abstract:Background Health related quality of life (HRQL) is a research topic that has attracted increasing interests around the world over the past two decades. The 36-item Short Form (SF-36) is a commonly used instrument for measuring HRQL. However, the information on Chinese adults' quality of life is limited. This paper reports on the feasibility of using the Mandarin version of SF-36 to evaluate HRQL in the population of Shanghai, China. Methods A total of 1034 subjects were randomly sampled using a stratified multiple-stage sampling method in Shanghai. Demographic information was collected, and SF-36 was used to measure HRQL. Results Internal reliability coefficients were greater than 0.7 in six of the eight SF-36 dimensions, except social function and mental health. Intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.689 to 0.972. Split-half reliability coefficients were higher than 0.9 in five SF-36 dimensions. Validity was assessed by factor analysis and correlation analysis. Our results were basically in accordance with the theoretical construction of SF-36. The average scores of most SF-36 dimensions were higher than 80. The primary influencing risk factors of HRQL included chronic diseases, age, frequency of activities, and geographical region, which were identified using multivariate stepwise regression. Conclusion Overall, HRQL in the population of Shanghai is quite good. The Mandarin version of SF-36 is a valid and reliable tool for assessing HRQL.

Abstract:BackgroundChronic heart failure (CHF), a major public health problem worldwide, seriously limits health-related quality of life (HRQOL). How to evaluate HRQOL in older patients with CHF remains a problem.AimTo evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form version 2 (SF-36v2) in CHF patients.MethodsFrom September 2012 to June 2014, we assessed QOL using the SF-36v2 in 171 aging participants with CHF in four cardiology departments. Convergent and discriminant validity, factorial validity, sensitivity among different NYHA classes and between different age groups, and reliability were determined using standard measurement methods.ResultsA total of 150 participants completed a structured questionnaire including general information and the Chinese SF-36v2; 132 questionnaires were considered valid, while 21 patients refused to take part. 25 of the 50 participants invited to complete the 2-week test–retest questionnaires returned completed questionnaires. The internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s α) of the total SF-36v2 was 0.92 (range 0.74–0.93). All hypothesized item–subscale correlations showed satisfactory convergent and discriminant validity. Sensitivity was measured in different NYHA classes and age groups. Comparison of different NYHA classes showed statistical significance, but there was no significant difference between age groups.DiscussionWe confirmed the SF-36v2 as a valid instrument for evaluating HRQOL Chinese CHF patients. Both reliability and validity were strongly satisfactory, but there was divergence in understanding subscales such as “social functioning” because of differing cultural background.ConclusionsThe reliability, validity, and sensitivity of SF-36v2 in aging patients with CHF were acceptable.

Abstract:Background: The SF-36 is widely used as a significant health outcome or quality of life indicator and validated in many languages versions including Chinese. But the Chinese version of the SF-36 (CSF-36) is rarely used for those patients with hypertension, coronary heart diseases, chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer in China. Therefore, the CSF-36 needs to be validated in patients with chronic diseases. Objectives: This paper is aimed to validate the CSF-36 using an in-patient sample of four chronic diseases from mainland China, with focusing on psychometric properties. Methods: The CSF-36 was used in a longitudinal study consisting of 534 patients in these four chronic disease groups. The psychometric properties of the scale were evaluated by indicators such as validity and reliability coefficients Cronbach a, Pearson r, standardized response mean employing correlational analyses, multi-trait scaling analysis, t-tests, factor analyses and structural equation models. Results: Testretest reliability coefficients for all domains were higher than 0.80 with a range of 0.83 to 0.96; the internal consistency (a) for most domains was higher than 0.70. Five of the eight domains as well as the Physical and Mental Health subscale summaries all had statistically significant changes after treatment with the SRM ranging from 0.18 to 0.28. Conclusion: The CSF-36 showed good validity and reliability but small responsiveness when used in patients. It is a good and useful instrument for patients with chronic disease at some situations.
Health-related quality of life in Chinese people: a population-based survey of five cities in China.

Abstract:Aims: The current study aimed at undertaking an investigation to describe health-related quality of life (HRQL) in Chinese people, with a Mandarin version of the 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36) validated. Methods: A total of 3,219 respondents were successfully interviewed under a randomized stratified multi-stage sampling design from April 2007 to January 2008 in five cities of mainland China. Self-finished interview method was applied and the Mandarin version of SF-36 was used for assessing HRQL. Results: As a result, the reliability and validity of SF-36 were acceptable, although some deviations from the hypothesized model still existed. The Chinese population scored higher than other populations in five of the eight SF-36 scales and Chinese men scored higher than women in six of the eight SF-36 scales. Conclusions: Basically, the Mandarin version of SF-36 is a reliable instrument, although minor modifications are needed. The health-related quality of life in Chinese people were quite high based on the sample of five cities in China; further research is needed to establish the countrywide norm of health-related quality of life in mainland China.

Abstract:Background Breast cancer remains the most common neoplasm diagnosed among women in China and globally. Health-related questionnaire assessments in research and clinical oncology settings have gained prominence. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network–Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–Breast Cancer Symptom Index (NFBSI-16) is a rapid and powerful tool to help evaluate disease- or treatment-related symptoms, both physical and emotional, in patients with breast cancer for clinical and research purposes. Prevalence of individual smartphones provides a potential web-based approach to administrating the questionnaire; however, the reliability of the NFBSI-16 in electronic format has not been assessed. Objective This study aimed to assess the reliability of a web-based NFBSI-16 questionnaire in breast cancer patients undergoing systematic treatment with a prospective open-label randomized crossover study design. Methods We recruited random patients with breast cancer under systematic treatment from the central hospital registry to complete both paper- and web-based versions of the questionnaires. Both versions of the questionnaires were self-assessed. Patients were randomly assigned to group A (paper-based first and web-based second) or group B (web-based first and paper-based second). A total of 354 patients were included in the analysis (group A: n=177, group B: n=177). Descriptive sociodemographic characteristics, reliability and agreement rates for single items, subscales, and total score were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The Lin concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) and Spearman and Kendall τ rank correlations were used to assess test-retest reliability. Results Test-retest reliability measured with CCCs was 0.94 for the total NFBSI-16 score. Significant correlations (Spearman ρ) were documented for all 4 subscales—Disease-Related Symptoms Subscale–Physical (ρ=0.93), Disease-Related Symptoms Subscale–Emotional (ρ=0.85), Treatment Side Effects Subscale (ρ=0.95), and Function and Well-Being Subscale (ρ=0.91)—and total NFBSI-16 score (ρ=0.94). Mean differences of the test and retest were all close to zero (≤0.06). The parallel test-retest reliability of subscales with the Wilcoxon test comparing individual items found GP3 (item 5) to be significantly different (P=.02). A majority of the participants in this study (255/354, 72.0%) preferred the web-based over the paper-based version. Conclusions The web-based version of the NFBSI-16 questionnaire is an excellent tool for monitoring individual breast cancer patients under treatment, with the majority of participants preferring it over the paper-based version.

Abstract:This study was designed to assess the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) assessed with opiate addicts in China. The sample was composed of 442 questionnaires from three regions in China, in 2004. The reliability of Chinese-version SF-36 was obtained using Cronbach's α and split-half coefficients and the validity was calculated using correlation analysis and confirmatory factor analysis method. The results of reliability and validity provide the first evidence that Chinese-version SF-36 is validated for Chinese addicts. The study's limitations are noted.

Abstract:Background The rapid proliferation of web-based information on health and health care has profoundly changed individuals’ health-seeking behaviors, with individuals choosing the internet as their first source of information on their health conditions before seeking professional advice. However, barriers to the evaluation of people’s eHealth literacy present some difficulties for decision makers with respect to encouraging and empowering patients to use web-based resources. Objective This study aims to examine the psychometric properties of a simplified Chinese version of the eHealth Literacy Scale (SC-eHEALS). Methods Data used for analysis were obtained from a cross-sectional multicenter survey. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to examine the structure of the SC-eHEALS. Correlations between the SC-eHEALS and ICEpop capability measure for adults (ICECAP-A) items and overall health status were estimated to assess the convergent validity. Internal consistency reliability was confirmed using Cronbach alpha (α), McDonald omega (ω), and split-half reliability (λ). A general partial credit model was used to perform the item response theory (IRT) analysis. Item difficulty, discrimination, and fit were reported. Item-category characteristic curves (ICCs) and item and test information curves were used to graphically assess the validity and reliability based on the IRT analysis. Differential item functioning (DIF) was used to check for possible item bias on gender and age. Results A total of 574 respondents from 5 cities in China completed the SC-eHEALS. CFA confirmed that the one-factor model was acceptable. The internal consistency reliability was good, with α=0.96, ω=0.92, and λ=0.96. The item-total correlation coefficients ranged between 0.86 and 0.91. Items 8 and 4 showed the lowest and highest mean scores, respectively. The correlation coefficients between the SC-eHEALS and ICECAP-A items and overall health status were significant, but the strength was mild. The discrimination of SC-eHEALS items ranged between 2.63 and 5.42. ICCs indicated that the order of categories’ thresholds for all items was as expected. In total, 70% of the information provided by SC-eHEALS was below the average level of the latent trait. DIF was found for item 6 on age. Conclusions The SC-eHEALS has been demonstrated to have good psychometric properties and can therefore be used to evaluate people’s eHealth literacy in China.

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of concise health status questionnaire (SF-36 scale) in evaluating the quality of life of patients with chronic Keshan disease, and to provide a scientific basis for studying the quality of life and the evaluation of treatment and rehabilitation of this population.Methods:In the August 2017, using cluster random sampling method, 175 patients with chronic Keshan disease treated by self-management of family beds in Pingliang City, Gansu Province in 2017 were selected as survey subjects, and demographic and disease data were collected. The Chinese version of SF-36 scale was used to investigate the quality of life. Split-half reliability and Cronbach's α coefficient were used to evaluate the reliability of the SF-36 scale; the factor analysis, correlation and differences between groups were used to evaluate the validity of the SF-36 scale.Results:The split-half reliability value of SF-36 scale was 0.916, and the Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.869. Factor analysis extracted 3 common factors from 8 dimensions of SF-36 scale, and the cumulative contribution rate of the 3 common factors to the total variance was 72.08%. In addition to the correlation coefficient ( r) between Role-Emotional and Bodily Pain dimension, the r value between total score and the scores of each dimension, and the scores of each dimension of SF-36 scale were 0.140 - 0.769. Except for the Bodily Pain dimension, there were statistically significant differences in the scores of Physiological Functioning, Role-Physical, General Health, Vitality, Social Functioning, Role-Emotional, and Mental Health dimension of the quality of life of patients with different grades of cardiac function ( F = 4.66, 10.73, 6.77, 14.61, 5.58, 9.57, 7.10, P < 0.05). Conclusion:The Chinese version of SF-36 scale has good reliability and validity in evaluating the quality of life of patients with chronic Keshan disease, and can be used to evaluate the quality of life of the patients.

Abstract:Objective The study was conducted to assess the application value of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey(SF-36) on the evaluation of the psychological characteristics of Chinese elderly. Methods 1 128 community-dwelling elderly(60 years of age or older) were face-to-face surveyed by using a SF-36. Reliability and validity of the scale in assessing the sample population were determined. Results The split-half reliability of SF-36 in evaluating the quality of life of the elderly was 0.919(split-half reliability of the sub-dimensions ranged between 0.664 and 0.916), and the Cronbach's α coefficient of the overall scale was 0.914(coefficient of the sub-dimensions ranged between 0.738 and 0.943). In addition, correlation analysis indicated that the correlation coefficients between each item and its sub-dimension were significantly higher than those between other dimensions. Conclusion SF-36 exhibits good reliability and validity in evaluating the samples, suggesting that the scale is suitable for assessing the health conditions of Chinese elderly.

Abstract:Background: The Pediatric Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measures were developed using modern measurement theory and tested in a variety of settings to assess the quality of life, function, and symptoms of children and adolescents experiencing a chronic illness and its treatment. Developed in English, this set of measures had not been translated into Chinese. Objective: The objective of this study was to develop the Chinese version of the Pediatric PROMIS measures (C-Ped-PROMIS), specifically 8 short forms, and to pretest the translated measures in children and adolescents through cognitive interviewing methodology. Methods: The C-Ped-PROMIS was developed following the standard Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Translation Methodology. Bilingual teams from the United States and China reviewed the translation to develop a provisional version, which was then pretested with cognitive interview by probing 10 native Chinese-speaking children aged 8 to 17 years in China. Results: The translation was finalized by the bilingual teams. Most items, response options, and instructions were well understood by the children, and some revisions were made to address patient's comments during the cognitive interview. Conclusions: The results indicated that the C-Ped-PROMIS items were semantically and conceptually equivalent to the original. Children aged 8 to 17 years in China were able to comprehend these measures and express their experience and feelings about illness or their life. Implications for practice: The C-Ped-PROMIS is available for psychometric validation. Future work will be directed at translating the rest of the item banks, calibrating them and creating a Chinese final version of the short forms.

Abstract:The incidence rate of chronic heart failure has increased significantly in China and has a large impact on patients' lives. The purpose of the study was to validate the Chronic Heart Failure Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (CHFQOLQ-20) cross-culturally and test its reliability and validity in patients with chronic heart failure. This study was conducted by investigating 622 patients with chronic heart failure from August 2023 to January 2024, and the data were tested for validity using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 23.0. The final psychometric validation of the CHFQOLQ-20 was performed. The Chinese version of the CHFQOLQ-20 had a Cronbach's α of 0.908, a split-half reliability of 0.870, and a retest reliability of 0.892. An exploratory factor analysis yielded four common factors with a cumulative ANOVA of 59.355%, and the validated factor analysis with one correction resulted in a better-fitting model (χ2/df = 2.020, RMSEA = 0.057, CFI = 0.920, TLI = 0.907). The scale is a reliable assessment tool that can be used in future clinical practice.
