Abstract:This experiment was conducted to study the effects of zinc and calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP) on feed intake and its regulation mechanism of piglets.Thirty crossed-bred(Duroc×Landrace×Large White) pigs with an average body weight of 9.57 kg were randomly assigned to five groups(control group Ⅰ,trial group Ⅰ,trial groupⅡ,control group Ⅱ and trial group Ⅲ) with 6 piglets per group.Piglets in all the groups were fed with the same basal diet.The feeding trial lasted for 14 days.After 24-hour fasting(free access to water),piglets in control group Ⅰ,trial group Ⅰ and trial group Ⅱ were injected 0,2 and 4 mg/kg BW zinc,and then slaughtered at 24-hour after injection.Piglets in control group Ⅱ and trial group Ⅲ were injected 0 and 0.05 mg/kg BW CGRP,and then slaughtered at 2-hour after injection.The results showed as follows: 1) compared with the control group Ⅰ,feed intake of trial group Ⅰ and trial group Ⅱ were significantly increased(P0.05) and decreased(P0.05),respectively.Compared with the control group Ⅱ,feed intake in trial group Ⅲ were significantly decreased(P0.05).2) There were no significant differences on serum glucose and leptin levels by injection of zinc(P0.05),but the triglyceride(TG),insulin and glucagon levels were significantly decreased(P0.05).Injection of CGRP significantly decreased serum glucose,TG and insulin levels(P0.05) and increased glucagon levels(P0.05),but had no effect on leptin levels(P0.05).3) Compared with the control group Ⅰ,the expression levels of NPY mRNA in trial group Ⅰ and trial group Ⅱ were significantly increased(P0.05),but the CGRP and CCK mRNA expression levels were significantly decreased(P0.05).Compared with the control group Ⅱ,the CGRP and CCK mRNA expression level were significantly increased(P0.05),while NPY mRNA expression levels was decreased significantly(P0.05) in trial group Ⅲ.These results indicate that zinc can stimulate intake of piglets through inducing NPY mRNA expression and inhibiting CGRP and CCK mRNA expression.However,CGRP can compromise feed intake of piglets by inhibiting NPY mRNA expression and inducing CGRP as well as CCK mRNA expression.
Research on Application of DL-RSM and Compound Enzymes in Fattening Pigs Diet

Abstract:Thirty-six healthy fattening pigs(Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire)were chosen to be randomly divided into three groups by sex, with 3 replicated in each group and 4 pigs in each replicate.The control group was fed the corn-soybean mea(lSBM)diet; test group 1 (double-low rapeseed meal, DL-RSM group) used 13% double-low rapeseed meal instead replacement of 11% soybean of the control group diet; test group 2 (DL-RSM+Enzymes group) 0.03% compound enzymes were supplemented on the basis of DL-RSM group diet.The feeding experiment lasted for 51 days, after 7 days of adaptation period.The results showed that different treatment diets had no significant effect on the growth performance and feed utilization of the fattening pigs(P0.05); compared with the control group, the daily weight gain and feed conversion efficiency of fattening pigs in test group 1 had a decreasing trend, adding enzyme increased the DM and total phosphorus apparent digestibility of the fattening pigs diet by 3.49% (P0.05) and 32.53% (P0.05) respectively.

Abstract:Over the last 27 years (1990-2017), based on the revolutionary progresses of basic nutrition research, novel methods and techniques have been developed which bring a profound technological revolution to pig production from free-range system to intensive farming all over the world. Basic theoretical innovations and feed production studies have provided vital advancements in pig nutrition by developing formula feed, utilizing balanced diets, determining feed energy value, dividing pig physiological stages, enhancing gut health, and improving feed processing technique. Formula feed is the primary contributor of the rise of the mechanized farming industry, and meets comprehensive nutritional needs of the pig. The focuses of the development of a balanced diet by optimizing nutrient levels are the amino acids balance, the balance between amino acids and energy, the balance between calcium and phosphorus. Multiple-site-production and targeted feeding program have been applied extensively. Early weaning of piglets improves production efficiency, but piglets that have not yet fully developed their intestine are prone to diarrhea. Therefore, intestinal health has received special attention in recent years. Feed processing technologies, such as granulation, puffing, fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis, can improve the utilization of feed nutrients and reduce production cost. However, increasing a sow's potential for production, seeking alternatives to antibiotics, reducing drug treatment in piglets, developing functional additives and improving meat quality remain future challenges. Herein, we outline the important progresses of pig nutrition in the past 27 years, which will shed light on the basic nutrition rules of pig production, and help to push forward its future development. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Metabolic Characteristics and Nutrient Utilization in High-Feed-efficiency Pigs Selected Using Different Feed Conversion Ratio Models.

Abstract:An understanding of the nutrient utilization characteristics of pigs with different feed efficiencies (FEs) will help us to develop new strategies to reduce the costs of pig production. In this study, we selected pigs with a range of FEs according to two feed conversion ratio models: the feed intake (FI) model, where pigs had the same average daily gains (ADGs) but different FIs, and the ADG model, where pigs had the same FIs but different ADGs. High-FE pigs had a higher abundance of short chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria (Lachnospiraceae, Clostridiaceae_1, and Coriobacteriaceae) in their caecum in the FI model, and low-FE pigs had a higher abundance of two families (Bacteroidales_S24_7_group and Peptococcaceae) and two genera (Anaerotruncus and Candidatus_Soleaferrea) in both models. By contrast, high-FE pigs had more goblet cells and higher mRNA expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in the FI model, and higher mRNA expression of occludin but lower expressions of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-α2 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC1α) in the ADG model. These findings suggest that the presence of SCFA-producing bacteria in the caecum and increased muscular growth may contribute to the high FE of low-FI pigs, while improved intestinal functions and decreased mitochondrial activity in the skeletal muscle are related to the high FE of high-ADG pigs.

Abstract:The physiological controls of feeding behavior in pigs are reviewed. Feeding patterns, central nervous system integration of the control systems and the influence of taste and olfaction are briefly considered, but the emphasis of the review is on the specific control systems that determine meal size. The glucostatic mechanism of stimulation of eating operates in the pig, but is probably an emergency control in response to a severe deficiency of glucose available to the central nervous system. The effective controls determining meal size are predominantly inhibitory signals initiated within or near the gastrointestinal tract by the presence of food. There is evidence that a rise in osmoconcentration caused by the arrival of foodstuffs in the duodenum during a meal can inhibit feeding behavior to a degree proportional to the hypertonicity of the duodenal content. Arrival of chyme in the duodenum will also trigger the release of cholecystokinin (CCK). Exogenous CCK injected by various routes inhibits feeding, suggesting that endogenous CCK acts as a satiety or inhibitory signal during meals. Gastrointestinal distention during meals probably also acts as an inhibitory signal, but only preliminary studies have been made to delineate the role of this factor in feeding behavior. It is concluded that although considerable research has been conducted to reveal what control mechanisms operate in pigs, even the mechanisms already investigated are not firmly established as operating in normal meals. The osmoreceptive, CCK and gastrointestinal distention control systems are promising hypotheses worthy of further study, and the search for other control systems that may also participate continues.

Abstract:Increasing feed efficiency is a major goal of breeders as it can reduce production cost and energy consumption. However, the genetic architecture of feeding behavior and feed efficiency traits remains elusive. To investigate the genetic architecture of feed efficiency in pigs, three feeding behavior traits (daily feed intake, number of daily visits to feeder, and duration of each visit) and two feed efficiency traits (feed conversion ratio and residual feed intake) were considered. We performed genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of the five traits using a population of 1,008 Duroc pigs genotyped with an Illumina Porcine SNP50K BeadChip. A total of 9 genome-wide (P < 1.54E-06) and 35 suggestive (P < 3.08E-05) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected. Two pleiotropic quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on SSC 1 and SSC 7 were found to affect more than one trait. Markers WU_10.2_7_18377044 and DRGA0001676 are two key SNPs for these two pleiotropic QTLs. Marker WU_10.2_7_18377044 on SSC 7 contributed 2.16 and 2.37% of the observed phenotypic variance for DFI and RFI, respectively. The other SNP DRGA0001676 on SSC 1 explained 3.22 and 5.46% of the observed phenotypic variance for FCR and RFI, respectively. Finally, functions of candidate genes and gene set enrichment analysis indicate that most of the significant pathways are associated with hormonal and digestive gland secretion during feeding. This study advances our understanding of the genetic mechanisms of feeding behavior and feed efficiency traits and provide an opportunity for increasing feeding efficiency using marker-assisted selection or genomic selection in pigs.

Abstract:The maternal nutrition is the only nutrient source of embryo of pigs and newborn piglet as well as suckling pigs.Maternal nutrition and body condition not only affect reproduction and lactation performance but also determine the growth rate of piglets.The fiber diet in gestation can increase volatile fatty acids concentrations in blood of sows,especially increase blood acetic acid content which can immediately synthesize milk fat,and hence improve the energy level of milk.Change in ingredients of diets for sows in late gestation and lactation may enhance milk production and improve milk composition,and further improve the growth performance of piglets.In this paper,authors reviewed the effect of dietary ingredient especially fiber and fat on reproduction,lactation,growth of pigs and involved molecular mechanism.
Effects of Interactions between Feeding Patterns and the Gut Microbiota on Pig Reproductive Performance

Abstract:The feeding mode is an important factor affecting the reproductive performance of pigs. The composition and expression of the intestinal microbiota are closely related to the physiological and biochemical indicators of animals. Therefore, to explore the impact of different feeding patterns on the reproductive performance of pigs, this study collected reproductive performance data from 1607 Yorkshire pigs raised under different feeding patterns and conducted a fixed-effect variance analysis. Among them, 731 were in the artificial feeding (AM) group and 876 were in the feeding station feeding (SM) group. Additionally, 40 Yorkshire sows in the late gestation period were randomly selected from each feeding mode for intestinal microbiota analysis. The results of the analysis showed that, in the AM group, both the number of birth deformities (NBD) and the number of stillbirths (NSB) were significantly greater than they were in the SM group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the total number born (TNB) in the AM group was significantly lower than that in the SM group (p < 0.05). The results of the intestinal microbiota analysis revealed that at the phylum level, there were significant differences in nine bacterial taxa between the AM and SM groups (p < 0.05). At the genus level, the abundance of a variety of beneficial bacteria related to reproductive performance in the SM group was significantly greater than that in the AM group. Finally, fecal metabolomic analysis revealed that the contents of butyric acid, isovaleric acid, valeric acid, and isobutyric acid, which are associated with reproductive performance, in the feces of sows in the SM group were significantly higher than those in the AM group (p < 0.05). These results indicate that different feeding methods can affect the gut microbiota composition of Yorkshire pigs and further influence the reproductive performance of pigs through the gut microbiota-metabolic product pathway. The results of this study provide valuable insights for further exploring the relationships between feeding modes, intestinal microbial composition, and host phenotypes.

Abstract:Dietary fiber (DF), divided into soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), has attracted increasing attention in the field of pig nutrition. Although DF reduces nutrient digestibility and inhibits energy deposition in most cases, fiber-rich feeds have been widely used in pig diets. This is not only because of lower feed costs, but also from the continuous discovery about the nutritional value of DF, mainly including the improvement of piglet intestinal health and sow reproductive performance. The addition timing has also been further considered, which potentially enables the nutritional value of DF to be accurately used in applicable pig models. Furthermore, fiber degrading enzymes have been shown to alleviate the anti-nutritional effects of DF and have ensured the improvement effect of fiber on intestinal health in young piglet models. However, the regulatory effect of fiber on pork quality is still unclear, which requires consideration of the wide range of fiber sources and the complexity of the basic diet composition, as well as the impact of pig breeds. Taken together, future research needs to gain more insight into the combined effects of SDF and IDF, processing methods, and addition timing to improve the nutritional value of DF, and further explore the physiological functions and regulatory mechanisms of DF fermentation products short-chain fatty acids in pigs.

Abstract:Abstract This chapter summarizes current research on the efficacy, possible mechanisms, and feasibility in the application of phytogenic compounds as feed additives in pig diets. Phytogenic compounds are defined as plant-derived natural bioactive compounds with positive effects on animal growth and health, and are often applied to essential oils (EOs), botanicals, and herbal extracts. Some phytogenic compounds have a variety of functions, including antimicrobial, antioxidative, antiinflammatory, and immunoregulatory effects. The commercial phytochemicals applied in pig production including oregano EO and cinnamaldeyde have been shown to improve growth performance and intestinal health in weaned piglets, reproductive performance in sows, and semen quality in boars. Therefore, several phytochemicals are regarded as potential alternatives to antibiotics in pig production. However, there has been a lack of consistency in laboratory results due to the varied composition of products, dosages, and duration of treatment. The integration of multi-omics information may help to understand the mechanisms underlying phytogenic compounds' functions and subsequently guide their effective use.

Abstract:As one kind of high-quality feed with rich nutrients, including high quality protein and amino acids, dietary fiber, enriched vitamins and mineral elements and bioactive molecules, alfalfa has been widely used in the production of ruminant livestock. As the understanding of alfalfa becomes more and more comprehensive, it is found that the high-quality nutrients in alfalfa could have positive effects on pigs. An increasing number of researches have shown that supplementing dietary alfalfa to the diet of gestating sows reduced constipation, alleviated abnormal behavior, improved satiety and reproductive performance; supplementing dietary alfalfa to the diet of piglets improved growth performance and intestinal barrier function, reduced intestinal inflammatory response and diarrhea; supplementing dietary alfalfa to the diet of growing-fattening pigs improved production performance and pork quality. Moreover, the mechanisms by which various nutrients of alfalfa exert their beneficial effects on pigs mainly including dietary fiber stimulating intestinal peristalsis, enhancing the activity of digestive enzymes, and promoting the colonization of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract through fermentation in the intestine, producing short-chain fatty acids and thus improving intestinal health; high quality protein and amino acids are beneficial to improve animal health condition; rich vitamins and mineral elements play an important role in various physiological functions and growth and development of the body; and bioactive molecules can improve the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory level. Therefore, alfalfa could be used as pig feed ingredient to alleviate various problems in the pig industry and to improve pig production performance. In this review, we detail the current application of alfalfa in pigs and discuss the potential mechanisms involved in how alfalfa improves growth and reproductive performance, pork quality, and intestinal health of the animals, thus laying the foundation for the increased application of high-quality forage in pig production.

Abstract:The importance of dietary fiber (DF) in animal diets is increasing with the advancement of nutritional research. DF is fermented by gut microbiota to produce metabolites, which are important in improving intestinal health. This review is a systematic review of DF in pig nutrition using in vitro and in vivo models. The fermentation characteristics of DF and the metabolic mechanisms of its metabolites were summarized in an in vitro model, and it was pointed out that SCFAs and gases are the important metabolites connecting DF, gut microbiota, and intestinal health, and they play a key role in intestinal health. At the same time, some information about host-microbe interactions could have been improved through traditional animal in vivo models, and the most direct feedback on nutrients was generated, confirming the beneficial effects of DF on sow reproductive performance, piglet intestinal health, and growing pork quality. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of different fermentation models were compared. In future studies, it is necessary to flexibly combine in vivo and in vitro fermentation models to profoundly investigate the mechanism of DF on the organism in order to promote the development of precision nutrition tools and to provide a scientific basis for the in-depth and rational utilization of DF in animal husbandry.

Abstract:Feed efficiency is a trait of interest in pigs as it contributes to lowering the ecological and economical costs of pig production. A divergent genetic selection experiment from a Large White pig population was performed for 10 generations, leading to pig lines with relative low- (LRFI) and high- (HRFI) residual feed intake (RFI). Feeding behavior and metabolic differences have been previously reported between the two lines. We hypothesized that part of these differences could be related to differential sensing and absorption of nutrients in the proximal intestine. We investigated the duodenum transcriptome and DNA methylation profiles comparing overnight fasting with ad libitum feeding in LRFI and HRFI pigs (n=24). We identified 1,106 differentially expressed genes between the two lines, notably affecting pathways of the transmembrane transport activity and related to mitosis or chromosome separation. The LRFI line showed a greater transcriptomic response to feed intake than the HRFI line. Feed intake affected genes from both anabolic and catabolic pathways in the pig duodenum, such as rRNA production and autophagy. Several nutrient transporter and tight junction genes were differentially expressed between lines and/or by short term feed intake. We also identified 409 differentially methylated regions in the duodenum mucosa between the two lines, while this epigenetic mark was less affected by feeding. Our findings highlighted that the genetic selection for feed efficiency in pigs changed the transcriptome profiles of the duodenum, and notably its response to feed intake, suggesting key roles for this proximal gut segment in mechanisms underlying feed efficiency.

Abstract:In this manuscript, several effective feeding and management systems to reduce environmental pollution in swine production have been briefly introduced. It is logical that reducing the excretion of nutrients in manure should be the first step to reduce the environmental impact of pig production. it is evident that the excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus can be reduced when more digestible or available feedstuffs are used. Also, it is well known that proper feed processing can reduce anti nutritional factors (ANF) and improve nutrient digestibilities. Supplementation of effective feed additives can reduce excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus due to efficient feed utilization. These include enzymes (e.g., phytase), antibiotics, probiotics, organic acids and growth hormones (beta -agonists and porcine somatotropin). One of the most effective ways to reduce pollutants from swine manure is to use synthetic amino acids in feed manufacturing. Many studies showed that reduction of 2 to 4% unit (U) of dietary protein with supplemental amino acid (AA) could dramatically reduce (15 to 20%) nitrogen excretion. Regarding feeding strategies, it has been recognized that phase feeding regimen could be used to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous excretion by feeding pigs in better agreement with age and physiological state. Feeding barrows and gilts separately, known as split sex feeding, can also decrease excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus. With the increasing concerns on the negative impact of animal production systems on the environment, animal nutritionists and producers should be aware that sustainability of animal agriculture is as important as high production performance. Therefore, some feeding and management strategies described in this manuscript will help to reduce environmental pollution in swine production. Proper combination of feeding regimen and environment-friendly diet formulation through nutritional approach will be more effective to reduce nutrient excretion in swine production system compared to single approach to do so.
